Movies won't play on DVD player

I am using idvd 5.0. I have made several movies with the internal optical writer using Maxell dvd +R discs which played fine in my dvd players (regular, tv type). My internal writer broke and I have since used two different external writers, both of which support dvd+r, and movies from neither will work in my dvd players - they won't play at all. The movie will play on a PC. I did try writing the movies to a disk file and when I try to bring up the mac DVD Player it says "A Valid DVD drive could not be found".. That may be a totally separate problem or maybe that means the file idvd is creating is bad.. I have 153 gb of free disk space and 689 mb of free memory so I think I am ok there. Any ideas?
Thanks!

Hi
Most often this is due to
• Brand of DVD used
• Type of DVD
• Burn Speed
I only use Verbatim DVDs (would like to try Taiyo Yuden - but can't find them)
I only use DVD-R (can't burn +R on my old Macs) - Never +/-RW
I set down burn speed to x4 (or even x1) - This can't be done in all versions of iDVD
But since iDVD 5 one can save as a DiskImage - then burn this with Disk Util tool
and here set down burn speed to x4.
Just burn to DVD via DeskTop - Do not deliver a Video-DVD but a Data-DVD which can not
playback on DVD-players.
I use Roxio Toast™ to do the burn - simpler than Disk Util tool - but costs a bit.

  • IDVD autoplay movie won't play in DVD player

My IDVD movie won't play in a DVD player when created in autoplay mode. It plays fine on my computer both in preview and on my computer's DVD player program and it works fine if I create a menu and button, just not if I create it in autoplay mode. I've tried it on my work compter and three DVD players and it won't play in any of them. Can anyone help, please?

    Hi Sue
    Thanks for responding.
I used a 16x Maxwell DVD-R. The same kind of disc worked fine with the movie when I had a menu.
    I'm afraid I don't know what a Patchburn is.

    Hi JosefK:
    Welcome to discussions.
Did you use a Data DVD by chance?
It needs to be a DVD-R with iMovie 4.
Are you using an external with Patchburn?

  • Help - my DVD won't play on DVD player or pc

I have a new macbook pro, and have created a large photo album on iDVD. I have tried 3 times to burn it to a DVD to play it on my TV. The first 2 times the program said it only had less than a minute to complete, but went for more than an hour. The DVD's were burned, but would not play on DVD or PC, but would work on my Mac.
The 3rd time, it went through whole process and it actually completed and ejected the DVD, but when I put it in our player I got a "disk error" message.
I am using DVD-R discs. Can someone please help? Or other ideas on how to get a slide show burned to DVD to play on TV?
    Thanks

Did you create a slideshow on iDVD, or create one in iPhoto and put that into iDVD or create a slideshow in iMovie? How many photos are in your slideshow? Some DVD players will not play more than 99 photos, and other players will stutter/skip/pause for a few seconds and then resume playing.
Did you do it like this?
    From iDVD Help:
    +Creating a slideshow in iDVD+
+Using the slideshow editor in iDVD you can create slideshows from images in iPhoto or from images stored in other places on your hard disk or a connected server. You can also include movies in your slideshow.+
    +To create a slideshow in iDVD:+
+Make sure the menu that the slideshow will be accessible from is showing in the iDVD window.+
+If you want the slideshow to link from the main menu, for example, the main menu should be showing in the iDVD window.+
+You can proceed in one of two ways:+

+Click the Add button in the lower left of the iDVD window, and select Add Slideshow from the pop-up menu. A button labeled My Slideshow appears on the menu.+

+Drag an album to the DVD menu. This automatically creates a button that links to the slideshow. The button has the name of your iPhoto album and, if the button is an image button, it automatically displays the first slide in the slideshow.+
+Double-click the button to open the slideshow editor.+
+The iDVD window changes to show the Photos pane if it is not already selected.+
+If you started by adding a My Slideshow button to your menu, the slideshow editor is empty, so you need to drag images to it from the Photos pane, described below.+
+If you started by dragging an album to your menu, the slideshow editor shows thumbnails of the photos in the slideshow. To view photos as a list instead, click the list icon in the upper right of the iDVD window.+
+Add, arrange, or delete photos or movie clips from the slideshow to create the sequence you want.+

+To add images, drag individual photos or folders from the Photos pane or from elsewhere on your hard disk or a connected server to the slideshow editor.+

+To add movies, drag individual movies from the Media pane or from elsewhere on your hard disk or a connected server to the slideshow editor.+

+To reorder the images or movies, select the ones you want to move, and drag them to a different position.+
+If you add a photo album and do not reorder the images, the slideshow displays your photos in the order they are organized in the photo album.+

+To delete an image or movie, select it and choose Edit > Delete, or press the Delete key.+
+Click the Settings button (shown below) and select the settings you want for the slideshow:+

+“Loop slideshow” makes the slideshow repeat continuously until the viewer moves to a different part of the DVD.+

+“Display navigation arrows” shows navigation arrows on the screen. It’s most helpful to display arrows when you set the slideshow to progress manually, which means the viewer controls movement from slide to slide. These arrows are simply a visual cue; the viewer must use the remote control to advance the slideshow.+

+“Add image files to DVD-ROM” adds copies of the photos and movies to the DVD disc so viewers can download them to their computers.+

+“Show titles and comments” lets you add titles and comments to the photos and movies. These are visible in the slideshow.+

+“Duck audio while playing movies” silences any soundtrack you have added to the slideshow while the movie in your slideshow play. This ensures that the slideshow soundtrack and movie audio do not play at the same time.+
+Click the Transition pop-up menu and choose a transition to smoothly move from one image to the next. Only one transition can be applied to a slideshow.+
+To preview a transition, click the Preview button (shown below). The iDVD remote control appears. Use your pointer to click the arrows in the remote control, which highlights buttons on your menu. Highlight the button to which you have added a transition and click Enter on the remote control. Click Exit to return to the slideshow editor.+
+Click the Slide Duration pop-up menu and choose the length of time you want each slide to stay on the screen. (You cannot set a custom duration time, and the duration you select applies to all slides in the slideshow.) Be sure to allow enough time for the transition you selected.+
+To let the viewer advance through the slideshow manually using a remote control, choose Manual. If you want to add a soundtrack to your slideshow, you don’t need to set the slide duration.+
+The slide duration you set does not apply to movies you add to the sideshow. Movies in a slideshow play in their entirety before the next slide appears.+
+Click the Return button to exit the slideshow editor.+
+The duration of your slideshow, in minutes, appears at the top center of the slideshow editor. As you add and remove images, transitions, and so on, you can keep track of how long the slideshow is.+
+When you add RAW images from iPhoto, the RAW files appear in the slideshow as JPEG images. If you choose to save the photos to the DVD-ROM portion of the disc, so that viewers can download them to their own computer, iDVD saves the RAW files, not JPEG images, there.+
+To learn how to add a soundtrack to your slideshow, see Related Topics below.+
+NOTE: A slideshow that you create in iDVD does not show up in the Media pane and is therefore not accessible for use in other iDVD projects.+
Did you create a disk image with your iDVD project? That can often help pinpoint burning issues.
    From iDVD Help:
+You can test your project before you burn it by saving it as a disc image. The disc image of your project is a fully encoded version of the project that you can play in DVD Player (which comes on your Mac) or burn to a disc later. You can preview the disc image to make sure your project plays correctly and then make changes, if necessary, before burning a disc.+
+To create a disc image of your project:+
    +Choose File > “Save as Disc Image.”+
    +Type a name for the disc image.+
+Choose where you want to store the disc image.+
    +Click Save.+
+Double-click the disc image icon when the disc image is ready.+
+Launch DVD Player, in your Applications folder.+
+Your DVD project begins playing on your computer. Use the controller to navigate to and view all the content on your DVD. If everything works, the DVD you burn will work in most newer consumer DVD players and computers with a DVD drive.+

  • Windows Movie Maker won't play on DVD player

    I have the OS7 now
The instruction say that a burned MASTER disc will play on DVD players and most computers???
I have used Mp4 and WMV formats with Windows Movie Maker, but none will play on DVD players but play well on computers???
I had formally use the Windows DVD Maker and the final file was UBF which seemed to work on all players and computers. My DVD Maker will not allow completion of Movie, it  notes, " I need the proper codes to make it work"??
I have looked on the Microsoft site for these support codes but cannot find them??? Windows Movie worked well on my Vista OS. What has MS done to screw up this software???
    WGC_BAC

You need to read the owner's manual for your DVD player to find out exactly what video formats it will play.  Then you must ensure you record your video to DVD in a format that is recognized by your DVD player.  The Windows 7 Windows Movie Maker
may have a different default video format output that what you were using in Vista.  You have the option to specify the format of the video you record to DVD.

    Hi Patti,
    welcome to this forum
there's no such thing as "DVDVCPRO"-video-dvd.... that is just an export option in iM for.... you're short in time, forget it...
in Toast 6.1.1. (you need the latest update), choose "video" and simply drag'n drop your whole iM project (NO export needded!) into it - boom, done...
post here progress of your project, the European dayshift is awake ;-))

  • Burned DVD won't play on DVD player

I have downloaded a 22 minute video that I would like to burn to a DVD to play in my DVD player.  I have attempted on both DVD-R and DVD+R.  They burn to the disc but will not play on the DVD player.  The error message states that playback may not be available on this disk.  I have used the windows support search to problem solve on my own but have had no success.  I have ensured that I am selecting the CD/DVD player option to utilize the Mastered format.  I have gone into my option and have no filters on.  I have the video format on NTSC since I am from Pennsylvania/US.  I have not tried to burn it on slow or medium speed because it does burn to the DVD without problem it just won't playback on the DVD player.  What do you recommend as my next course of action for troubleshooting.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

I would suspect that the video is not DVD Mpeg2 compliant.  Depending on the DVD player, some will play other formats, also.  If there are no video authoring programs on the computer, try Windows Movie Maker (free) to see if the video needs too be converted to DVD Mpeg2 standards.

  • DVD from DVDSP won't play in dvd player?

    Hi.
I shot some HDV footage on a Sony-Z1, edtied it in FCP 5.1, exported a Quicktime movie (HDV 1080i50) from FCP, took this QT file to Compressor 2.1 and made a H.264 6.75Mbps.mov. In DVDSP I have made both a HDDVD and also tried to make a new project and a DVD as a SP (the exported files used were a MPEG-2 6.2Mbps 2-pass 16:9.m2v, both 1080i (HVD res) and 1080i (std. res)). Have tried to burn all of the different DVDSP projects on DVD -R and +R's . Also tried to change the settings for Red laser and Blue laser. All of the DVD's works on various computers, but none of them works on a HD DVD player. Have tried several different dvd players.
Does anybody know what might be the problem???
    Best regards,
    Martin Thaulow

If you look through these forums you will notice that no one has come up with any answers for compatability PlayBack problems.
I have looked for years and read the entire manual but still Im making great DVDs for my Macs but watch out if you give them to any one else,
Im about to figure out how I can get the most out of DVD burning in Toast, at least I know the DVDs will play anywhere!

  • DVD from iDVD won't play on DVD player

I have made a movie in iMovie with pictures and videos from a vacation. When I was finished in iMovie, I exported the movie to iDVD.
In iDVD I made a menu for my DVD.
I used a Memorex DVD-R disc to burn my DVD on, but I now have a problem. The burned DVD will only play on computers (Macs and Windows), not on regular DVD players. When I try to play the DVD on a regular DVD player, the TV just displays an error message.
    Does somebody know what's wrong?

It sounds like a burn error-rate problem. Unfortunately, iDVD doesn't directly give you the option to burn a disc at a low burn rate to greatly reduce such errors.
What you must do is a two step process:
Step one. 'Burn' a disk image of the completed project to your hard drive - it's an option under FILE. After the disk image is complete, double-click on the disk image icon to mount it on your Desktop and use Apple's DVD Player application to view the image to make sure it plays correctly (File>Open DVD media).
Step two. Use Apple's Disk Utility application or Roxio's Toast Titanium to burn the disk image to writable media. Use a low burn rate - no higher than 4x, but I like to use 2x. See Burning a disk image file on a CD or DVD in Mac OS X at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93006
Also, Memorex may not be the best media choice. Verbatum seems to have a good reputation and I like Maxell.

  • I made a slide show with music and random transitions in iPhoto.  I can't burn it to a DVD.  The burn button in iPhoto is not highlighted, and when I exported the slide show to iDVD, it lost the random transistions, and the disk won't play in DVD player.

Two problems:  1. My iphoto slide show loses its random transitions when I export it to iDVD.
    2. When I then burn it to a disk, the disk will not play in a DVD player, but only on my MAC.
    Any ideas?

The random transitions can only be random when played in iPhoto.
If you are in the slideshow mode and use the Share ➙ iDVD menu option a quictime movie will be created of the slideshow with the first random set of transitions and imported into iDVD.  The transitions, however,  will be fixed permanently and will not be changed again.
There is no way to get any sort of random behavior in an iDVD.  When it's burned to disk it's locked permanently.

  • DVD created with Encore won't play on DVD player

    Hello everyone,
I didn't reply to the other topic I posted here, but that problem (I think) is fixed.  It turned out to be a size problem.  I just reencoded the main movie at a lower bitrate and that problem should be resolved.
The final disc image now comes out at about 6.8-7gb out of an 8.5gb dual layer disc.  So I should have plenty of room with no space issues.
However, I am having a new problem that I didn't have before.  I really am feeling a time crunch to finish this project in the next day or two.  Everything is finished.  It looks great.  I built an iso with Adobe Encore and mounted it and tested it in PowerDVD.
Everything was completely flawless.  All the menus, the videos, the animation, everything.
So I go to burn the disc with Imgburn.  I burn it at 2.4x (the slowest my drive will write at).  Anyway, when it is finished it will NOT play on my dvd player.  Actually, I am using a PS3 to test it out but it is the only dvd player I have to use right now.  I have burned many discs with Encore before and they all worked great on my PS3.
So, I have traded one problem for another.  When I posted my previous topic, that disc I burned played on my PS3.  Part of the video was cut off but it played at least.  I can get the disc to play on my computer though.  I don't know if it is reading it as a folder or what.
I have tried redoing the project from scratch twice.  I removed all the assets, started a new project and carefully imported all the menus, videos and subtitles one at a time to be sure I didn't do anything wrong.  I looked for any settings that could be screwing things up but I couldn't find any.  I think I burned three or four discs that have all turned out the same.
Are there any specific settings that I might be missing?  Why would my disc not be playing in my PS3?
Please help me finish this project.

    I am using a PC, Windows 7 64bit.
The burner is an LG WH08LS20.
The media is Verbatim DataLifePlus Inkjet Printable DVD+R DL discs.
The problem is I have created many, many discs using Encore that have played perfectly fine on my PS3.  In fact, just a couple days ago when I created the last topic I created a dvd that played fine on my PS3.  It had problems with cutting off parts of the video like I said, but at least it played.
I don't think I am doing anything different in the creation of these discs now.  I am completely stumped.
When I put the disc in my ps3 nothing happens.  The dvd doesn't load automatically.  And there is no option under "video" to select it.
Do you have any ideas that could help me fix this problem?

  • Encore DVD Writing Cancels won't play on DVD player issue

So I have a very confusing issue with encore.
When I press build everything works fine. Then writing begins. The moment the writing reaches the end of the progress bar (the exact moment)  the progress bar goes to empty and the bottom bar says canceling and ejects the DVD. Usually (not every time) a pop up menu saying "end of file" appears next. When I press ok for end of file message the pop up disappears and suddenly the DVD progress bar is filled and the DVD says completed (as if nothing just happened). So I'm confused whether it worked or not!
I reinsert the DVD that just ejected into my Mac and it works! Then I put it into a DVD player and it won't play, it won't play on my old Xbox 360 either, but it WILL play in a Bluray player?!
Everytime I rewrite the files I get different results. They all work on my Mac and blu ray but only 1 of 4 works in the Xbox. The one that does work in the Xbox will read in the DVD player but plays choppy and  skips  around as if the DVD is scratched or damaged?
! Other differences involve the write speed, sometimes the options are 8x or 4x. Other times its 3x,2x, and 1x. When the latter write speed options occur I cannot press "test before writing" it's greyed out. When 8x and 4x are the speed options I can check it.  I used different DVDs and it didn't help.
I work for a company that needs to copy the DVDs but they can't be copied. Don't know why?
    Here are my settings
    Mpeg 2-DVD exported from Pr.
    720x480

    Check build is good.
I really need help with this weird issue quickly thanks.

Just an Update, I've tried many things to no avail still have a few others to try. Being a Large file it takes a while to try things.
I went ahead and got Toast, but considering that the Image Iso and the DVD Folder both gave me the End of File Error and the Disc "Failed Completed" Error I figured it a no go and it was. It did however give me something that Opened everywhere (Mac,Xbox,Dvd) , but it did not play on the Dvd correctly.
I've done numerous things in the Mac permissions end Like trying as a different user and running as the Root User, but it was also unsuccessful.
I've Re- Exported the file many different ways, but finally had a breakthrough using a version of M2v.  It's definitely an error with Finalizing. My disc previously began to mess up and give "END of File" after it finished writing, it never even made it to the "Writing Lead Out" stage. I beleive this is why it plays it certain places fine, but probably not as well in systems (like Dvd players) that require those last few steps like writing Lead Out.
The only issue I have now is that when I put it into the DVD player it say "No title"!?!? AY CARAMBA!!!
Now I'm working on trying to figure this NEW problem! I have all my menus and links in place, but no go. I think it may be related to the previous problem in that something beneath the surface is wrong with my computer. Being a used Mac with a restored Hard Drive there are probably endless possibilities, but I hesitate to think that way because it may also have absolutely nothing to do with it.
So any help is greatly appreciated
whether it be a specific issue you know of dealing with used Macs and issue similar to mine
or just on the "NO Title" error as a separate issue. I'm hoping this "No Title" is something simple and unrelated,  I've already burned through about 13 discs and even more pain pills for the headaches!!

  • Burned DVD won't play in DVD player?

I burned a video I purchased on itunes to a DVD using Finder (dragging and dropping onto disk). It burned fine, but won't play in my DVD player. It will play on my computer though.
Are there different formats you can burn it in? Am I not using the correct format?
    I am using a DVD-RW disk.
    Any help is appreciated! Thanks.

In iTunes you create a Playlist from the tracks you want and then select it and 'Burn Playlist to disc', just dragging the files in the Finder is just copying the files across and not making a playable CD.

  • Idvd won't play in DVD player

I created an Imovie and shared it with Idvd to burn. I choose a theme and burned the DVD with no troubles. The movie will play in my computer (without showing the theme from Idvd but playing the movie) but will not play in my home DVD player hooked to the TV.

Also follow this workflow to help ensure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
