No, you can't upgrade from Panther 10.3 to 10.4 Tiger. Both are separate systems that you have to purchase. You get free updates for 10.3 & free updates for 10.4.
You can get 10.4 Tiger at the Apple Store, at most computer stores & at Mac web stores. Here's one good web source - Apple Rescue http://www.applerescue.com

10.4 is Tiger, & 10.4.11 is as high as Tiger goes.
10.5.x is Leopard
10.6.x is Snow Leopard
10.7 is Lion
The highest OS your Core Duo can run is 10.6.x, you cannot install or run 10.7 on it...

Most of the time a perception of general slow performance is the result of installing third party junk alleged to speed up, "clean" or "optimize" your Mac, or to look for viruses that don't exist. Ideally you would know what you installed so you can uninstall it, but if you don't know or aren't sure there are techniques such as Safe Mode and creating a temporary user account to confirm that suspicion.
If you open Activity Monitor it may show a process, or processes, that occupy a lot of your system's time.
Slowness confined solely to web browser activity is often the result of an inexorable progress toward websites that demand ever more processor-intensive tasks. If your slow performance is strictly limited to web browsing, you might try disabling Flash by either uninstalling it, or use utilities such as ClickToFlash that allow you to control what Flash content gets loaded. Flash in itself is not inherently evil, but there is nothing to stop websites or the advertisers who pay for them from writing horrible Flash code that can do everything from hogging 100% of your CPU's time to causing random crashes. You can watch Activity Monitor as in the above to correlate these troublesome web pages with performance degradation.
You are correct; if your computer shipped with Tiger you may certainly revert to it. I forgot that Tiger was shipping on new Macs as recently as five years ago. To downgrade it would be necessary to completely erase your hard disk and boot with the Tiger installation DVD, followed by installing it anew. Such drastic measures are not necessary and you are unlikely to be satisfied with the results anyway.
Assuming your system is free of third party parasitic junk attached to OS X in an ill-conceived attempt to improve upon it, that your hard disk drive is sound and the boot volume has enough free space to work with, by far the best performance-enhancing improvement would be to add more memory. Buy as much as your computer can use and that you can afford. 2 GB is not that much any more.

Upgrading G4 Powerbook from 10.3.9 to Tiger.

I haven't posted for a while, but I'm looking to upgrade my Powerbook for the last time, from 10.3.9 to Tiger.
I can't afford a new machine at the moment, so I upgraded my HD and Superdrive, to the best spec I could get at the time.
I don't want to go straight to Leopard, as I don't think it would run very well on my old Powerbook (plus I don't want to have to update all my software!), so I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice on upgrading to the last version of Tiger (10.4.11)?
The main thing that worries me is the old "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" thing.
I remember the logic board/lower RAM slot problem that seemed to raise it's ugly head some where around the 10.4.4 update. Although there was no particular evidence that it was this particular update that caused the problem on the G4 Power PC Powerbooks,I'm still a bit worried as I'd rather not lose the lower RAM slot, if there is any chance that Tiger might have caused it!
My machine was made in Jan 2004, and aside from a few minor problems, it's been fine. I was wondering if anyone out there with the 1.25Ghz model could give me some idea of their experiences, using Tiger on this particular model?
I like to try and keep up with the technology, and I've heard that upgrading the OS can make the computer seem "snappier" (not so much of the "spinning beachball of death"). Plus, I know I can't use a new ipod with anything less than 10.4.

I have Kingston RAM in both slots, 2 512MB chips. I tried cheaper RAM, but the 1.25 machine is extremely "picky" about RAM since my model supports "bus slewing" (which I believe means it cycles between full, and half power when in the "automatic" mode).
I had problems with other RAM, and my machine didn't like having one of the original Hynix 256MB chips, and one of the Kingston ones in the machine at the same time. Since I upgraded to the Kingston PBG433 type of RAM (which I believe Apple often use), I've had no problems.
I assume that Tiger would have no issues with this type of RAM, so I should be OK. Thanks for your advice.

Update from OS 10.1.5 Tiger?

My new iPod shuffle doesn't work, and I assume it's because my iMac still uses OS 10.1.5. I've been told that if I simply buy the $69 Tiger kit and follow the instructions on the kit, the installation is a simple procedure and the iPod shuffle will then work. I've also been told by another technician that it's not possible to upgrade directly from 10.1.5 to Tiger without losing all document and music files stored on the hard drive, so I'll need to back up everything and reinstall the files on Tiger, and that the procedure should be done by a knowledgeable technician or user to avoid problems. 1 some older iMacs need a firmware update.
2 OS X 10.4 needs a whole lot more RAM than 10.1. If you don't have at least 256MB installed, the system's gonna barf. And if you don't have at least 384 installed, while the system will work, you may not like the speed at which it works.
3 Tiger likes lots of hard drive space in which to roam. Early iMacs don't do FireWire, and the internal hard drives fitted to them at the factory are... puny. If you don't have at least 10GB free, you're gonna be sorry.
4 iMacs don't do USB 2.0. Be warned that connecting an iPod, even a Shuffle, by USB 1.1 is a S--L--O--W experience.

He's right that you must reformat; Tiger likes HFS+ with journalling. It can live without the journalling, but it doesn't like it. (Let me rephrase that: it DOESN'T LIKE IT. Really.)
You can probably back up your drive yourself, except that connections to an older iMac are likely to be scarce. Newer iMacs, with FireWire, work much better. Playing with the internal drive is best left to pros.
Does your machine have FireWire? If so, life's easy.
1 get a cloner, such as either SuperDUper! or Carbon Copy Cloner. (I've used both. I currently use SD! as my standard backup utility.)
2 get an external FireWire drive. (I'd go with a 160 or 200 GB drive.)
3 use the cloner to clone over your stuff.
4 install Tiger on the FireWire drive.
5 boot from the FireWire drive.
You're golden.
Things are a lot more difficult if you don't have FireWire.

Your Tiger iPhoto library may need upgrading with a Apple Library updater tool before you can use it with iPhoto '11. Reference. More iPhoto help just in case.
Make sure that that SD card is an SDHC card, and not just an SD card, or it may not be readable in your new iMac.
Here is the layout of the iTunes 11.0.1 Music folder on OS X 10.8.2. It may vary from what you have on Tiger.

Updating from 10.2.8, ejects Tiger DVD

I am trying to update my OS from 10.2.8 to Tiger. I have an emac G4 with its original DVD CD-RW/DVD-ROM (vendor: HL-DT-ST). When I click restart to run the installation, before the computer shuts down, it shows "you have inserted a disk containing no volume that mac OSX can read" with buttons ignore or eject. Even if I click ignore, the computer ejects Tiger when it restarts and boots up my originial operating system. I can play DVDs w/ no problem. I tried downloading superdrive but I received a message saying my computer didn't need it. I restarted holding the "C" key. I see a file folder with a question mark and the OS logo and then it boots up the OS. I also switched to system 9.0 and that said it didn't recognize the Tiger DVD. Eekk!
I have 640 mb in memory, 700mhz power pc G4 processor. 16+GB of harddrive space.

in this case the boot-rom cannot detect a bootable system on the DVD. There might be different reasons for this behaviour:
1. Bad burn (this happens once in a while)
2. scratches on the DVD
3. hardware problems wwith the DVD-drive
For the cases 1 and 2 you might get a replacement disk from Apple. Contact the Apple Store or go to one.

If you haven't already set up a Mail account in ML, you can copy the Mail folder from Tiger to ML on the same position
~/Library/Mail
Please note that in ML Library folder is hidden from the Finder. To access it select Go from the Finder menu, press alt/option key and hold it. You'll see Library popping up inside the Go menu.

What is the best way to migrate mail from OSX 10.4.11 (Tiger) to OSX 10.7 (Lion)

Does anyone have experience migrating mail boxes from OSX 10.4 to OSX 10.7?
I have an old 1.5 Ghz PowerPC G4 laptop with a lot of email (about 8 years worth). I just purchased a new Mac Mini with OSX 10.7 Lion and I'd like to migrate 2 groups of files, mail and photos. I figure the mail might be the most difficult, hence this request for information.
I have read where you can run a migration assistant for OS 10.5 and 10.6 to OSX 10.7 but there are only a few articles about the earlier OS.
Also, I would like to migrate ONLY the mail box into an existing user account. I would rather not migrate older files and applications that I have on the older PC.
Can anyone point me to articles about doing this?

Upgrade from 10.3.9 to tiger and can no longer restart or shutdown

I upgraded my powerbook G4 with 1 gb of ram with tiger recently and ever since, I can not reboot or shutdown without holding down the powerbutton. The system shuts down all programs and then hangs on the desktop with no applications running... just a blank screen.
If I press the powerbutton, the window that prompts you what you want to do (shutdown, restart) comes up, but does not do anything.
I use file vault.
Any ideas? I can not find anything on this on any support site. I can not reinstall the OS again... as I can not restart into the CD or boot from a CD by holding down C.

Since you can't boot from the Tiger install disc to run Disk First Aid repair, you can run FSCK instead with instructions for doing so provided per this link.

Error message when trying to upgrade from 10.3.9 to Tiger 10.4.5

Hope somebody can help. I'm fairly recent to macs as have always built and used pcs. Am having trouble upgrading from current pantherOS to Tiger. Bought emac with upgrade disc provided by seller. Disc was gray labelled emac. Installation went fine and everything was proceeding to point it finished writing files, configuring installation, and running installer scripts and then it quit with message: error installing software. Try reinstalling.
Tried reinstallation and same thing occurred. then Tried complete erase and new installation. Same error message.
Came to discussion group searching for something I might be doing wrong. Decided maybe disc was wrong even though it specified emac which is what I am using. Bought generic install disc that would install on any G3/4/5 with minimum specs per hardware which system met.Installation proceeded as it was going to install same as emac disc. This is normal full install disc for generic installation.
All installations screens came up and installation proceeded to same point as before and then quit with same message: error installing software/ Try reinstalling.
Have removed ram to original 256MB and tried. No luck. I am using external DVD for installation of DVD and wonder if this is problem but in the forums external DVD seems to work alright. Can reinstall old Panther OS without any problem
Ran hardware test and everything checked okay.
Should I just forget about upgrading and use 10.3.9 but would really like to know what is wrong. thanks. Rick

Do I have to upgrade my software when updating from 10.3.9 to Tiger?

I have pretty much the latest versions of all my software, as far as 10.3.9, anyhow. Mostly, I used Adobe and Macromedia programs, and I use Eudora (I have the latest one- 6.2 - I know they've stopped updating it.)
Also, I still use my Classic environment fairly often... for certain reasons I want to be able to continue using a few old items on this computer. At some point, I'll get another Mac with all the latest and greatest, but this one I need to keep and use the way it is.
The reason I'd put Tiger on it, is because so many things these days need at least 10.4 to run. Including the very latest upgrades for my Adobe software. I go back and forth on whether the possible disrupiton is worth gaining the ability to use more currently available "stuff" that needs 10.4+.
So... I can't seem to find any specifically notes stating that my system 9 software will be okay and run all right in tiger's classic environment, nor whether the programs I use, e.g. Adobe Creative Studio and the DreamWeaver Studio group, will be okay with this update. I hope, too, that things like Eudora, PopChar, Suitcase, etc, will be all right. I will probably update some programs gradually, but am hoping I won't actually HAVE to just because of installing 10.4.
I'll clone my hard drive etc, before doing it, of course...
But, anyway, does anyone have experience of making this change this way, maybe upgrading their software later but not having to do it right away?

It is worth doing the upgrade to Tiger. Most or perhaps all your Classic applications will work OK. I still have Tiger & classic works well. You will need the appropriate Tiger retail installation dvd. After installation do all the upgrades. I suggest if the Tiger version you get is less than 10.4.11 that you download the Combo 10.4.11 update from Apple downloads. Then use Software Update to check for any other updates needed. You should run Disk utility after each upgrade and correct permissions.

Worried about upgrading from 10.2.8 to Tiger

I know, everyone tells me I should upgrad to Tiger. I've been using 10.2.8 for some time now on my iMac FP and I got a lot of applications on it. My thinking is "If it aint broke, don't fix it" but I am finding that new stuff like the newest Java and iLife, etc., don't run on 10.2.8.
So, can everyone put my worries to rest? I guess I want to do the "upgrade" so I don't lose my existing apps. I have two large firewire drives. If I back everything up to there, is that a good idea? Or, since I'm doing an update, I don't have to worry about that? When you upgrade, what happens to all the apps you've installed in the "Application" folder? Are they still there? I would think that things like "Terminal" and other OSX apps would be replaced.
My internal drive is 80G and I'm using about 33G of that. I have one FW external drive that has 140G available. Should I "clone" my 33G internal to it, then do a clean install. If I do that, how do I get my stuff back over from the clone to the newly formatted 80G internal with Tiger on it.
I'm sorry for all the questions, but its a big step for me to take. Is upgrading just as good as doing a clean install?

If we go right back to the original Question we can assume that you are concerned about loss of data and the possibilty that a new or upgraded os will not operate to your satisfaction.
Point 1. regardless of what you do relating to the os you must have a backup?
Point 2. If you do not have a backup then make one. This is without question the most important fact of all time regarding data on a computer regardless of what system amd which os you run.
Point 3. all advice given by others is good, the choice of which app to use regarding a backup is often personal as many apps do the job as required.
Point 4. If a backup exists then you already have your insurance. Making changes to your os can be done without worry as this is the primary reason that backup apps exist. If we ever take the time to read the "read me files"
All of them state that we should make a backup before installing new data!
Point 5. I wish you a happy Christmas and wish all a happy mac in the new year.

Upgrade from 10.1.2 to Tiger (can it be done)

I have a relative who is still using 10.1.2. He is using a flat panel G4 with 512k ram and 40GB HD. he would like to upgrade but he still has some old system 9 apps that he uses and does not want to lose them plus he still wants his iMac to work. Can this even be done.

Tom has given you information on the System Requirements for Tiger.
Your relatives flat panel will run the latest version of OS X, (read Tiger). This computer has Open Firmware, and does not need a Firmware update. Although 512 MB of RAM meets the minimum requirement I suggest upgrading to 1 GB of RAM.
Expanding on what Tom said, Tiger can be purchased from the Apple Store or, on CDs, from applerescue. See this article for options on Installing Tiger without a DVD drive.
