Moving a catalog from old computer to the new one.

The old computer (32 bit) has PSE 9 and the new one (64 bit) PSE 11. The Folders holding the photos will be on a data drive having the same letter as the old computer (both have separate dirves for data). So the adresses of the phots will be the same.
How do I move the catalog, which I think is on the "C" drive in the old computer, to the new computer and convert it to PSE format. Could I move a backup of the catalog to the new computer and then restore it to PSE 11? One problem is that I am not sure which one of the several "catalogs" on the old "C" drive is the right one. [None of those are backups since I always stored the backups on another drive]. How do I tell?
Any help will be appreciated.

Good. PSE11 is a 32 bits application and will be installed as such in the new computer.

If the data drives on both computers are internal (not a unique external drive alternatively plugged in) you are wrong. The drives are recognized not only by letter drive but also by serial number.

Since you have the backups on another drive (I suppose they were made from the Organizer, not from another external software), you should simply do a restore to 'custom location' in the new computer. In a first step, that will restore the pictures folder tree, in a second one it will convert the catalog.
If you want to move the catalog, it will be harder:
- locate the folder with your catalog. Each catalog is in its own folder named from the catalog title. You should copy the whole folder with its files and subfolders to the new catalog, preferably in a different folder tree than your pictures folder tree.
- In the Organizer, you should convert it from the catalog manager
Now, how to resolve the problem of the data drive different serial numbers ? Three different ways :
1 - Use the 'reconnect missing files' feature. Its now easier with PSE11
2 - In Windows, reassign the same serial number to the drive. Some reading from John R Ellis :
3 - use a sqlite database tool to manually change the serial number in the media_table of the new catalog.
You can see why using the backup / restore process is much simpler and safer.

  • Songs from Old Computer to the New One

Ive just bought a new computer and want to know if theres a way i can transfer all the songs from the library on my old computer to the new one? Without having to import them all over again from cd's (etc). Thanks for ur help.

How to Copy and Move (Clone) your Music Files from One Computer to Another – or Archive Prior to a PC Re-Image or Reformat
This is the conceptual framework with related and important links. Apply and adapt it to your specific situation and equipment resources.
The safest, quickest, and most optimal method to move your Library to a new computer is to actually clone the entire ‘iTunes’ folder (directory) structure, rather than just copying just the song files. By copying the entire ‘iTunes’ folder and all sub-folders, you capture not only the music files, but the all-important ‘iTunes Library.itl’ database file (usually located in the ‘iTunes’ folder), which contains all the data about your songs (Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, Last Played, Date Added, etc). See: What are the iTunes Library files?
Install iTunes on the new computer. Then go back to your old computer and move (copy) the "iTunes" folder which usually resides inside your "…\My Documents\My Music" folder from the old computer to the exact same place (both Drive Letter and complete Path) on the new computer. When you open iTunes on the new computer it will look and behave exactly the same way it did on the old, Play Counts, Ratings, Comments and all!
NOTE: It is usually safer moving files between computers with the same version of iTunes!!
iTunes Files to Copy and Move to your New PC
    1) All music files in their current folder structure (usually located in and under the ‘iTunes Music’ folder)
    2) The Library database file: ‘iTunes Library.itl’ located in the ‘iTunes’ folder
    3) The Library XML file: ‘iTunes Music Library.xml’ located in the ‘iTunes’ folder
    4) Any XML playlist files you created for Playlist retention
    5) The two iTunes.pref files (optional)
    -- C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes.pref
    -- C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer Inc\iTunes.pref
    6) The XML file of Ratings, Play Counts and Last Played attributes saved from the main Library and created by Otto’s SaveRatings script (also optional, but recommended):
“Download this: http://ottodestruct.com/itunes/SaveRatings.zip . It's a program, just run it like any other program. Run it on the machine where you're copying the info from BEFORE you move the files to the new machine. Click the "Save Ratings" button and it'll create a ratings.xml file. Now when you move the files, move the program and this file as well. Then after you make your new iTunes library, run it again and click the "Restore Ratings" button. Voila, all your information is back in the Library. Well, most of it anyway, it's not perfect. It'll tell you what songs it couldn't figure out though, and there's usually not very many.”
Here's a list of methods to copy and move your music files from one computer to another:
    1) Use an External Hard Drive (ExHD) to move the complete files and Folder structures from one computer to another (my preferred option). You can clone’ the entire ‘iTunes’ folder structure in one very easy step. Also great to have available for complete backups of your Library. External hard drives now run less than $100 for 200-250GBs of storage. See This Link
    2) Directly connect the two computers....
    - 2a) Connect them through a Router &/or Network
    - 2b) Directly connect using an Ethernet cable: Straight for using at least one Mac; or Crossover for PC/PC Instructions here.
    - 2c) Connect them via a USB-to-USB Network Bridge. Example here. There are various types out there (use Google).
....Then copy the files from one computer to the other.
    3) Use the iPod as a transfer device, as this extensive Apple link explains. It will be a bit easier if your iPod has a larger capacity than your music collection, otherwise you will need to perform multiple copy/move transfers. This well written process also works fine while using any other data transfer medium (ExHD, Flash Drive, DVD, CD, Zipp, Jazz, etc.).
    4) Burn several DVDs (at 4.7GBs each) with your music data files and folder structure, and load them onto the new computer. Re-writable DVDs are more cost effective (if your DVD drive can manage these types).
    5) Burn 6x more on CDs (at 700MB each) than in #4 above and load the files and folders on the new computer. Re-writable CDs are more cost effective (if your CD drive can manage these types).
    6) Use a larger USB Flash drive (1GB - 4GB) to move the files and folders. Best if the flash drive is larger than your Library, otherwise you will need multiple copy/move transfers.
These are links to various additional instructions on performing the transfer (read them all, but some listed steps may not be required depending on your specific situation):

  • How do I transfer files from old computer to the new one

I have bought the desktop and used migration asiitant to transfer files but nothing came through, how do i transfer files

Your best option of migrating was when your turned on the new computer for the first time using Setup Assistant. Part of SA is it asks if you are migrating from another Mac, you apparently passed that and missed that opportunity. You then must have used Migration Assistant which is similar to SA but with one critical difference. Migration Assistant migrates everything to a new user account whereas SA would not. Log out of your existing account and into the new account and you will find your stuff. If you want to start over (highly recommended) you can. You will need to carefully read Lion Setup Assistant tips beginning where he discusses Second Chance.... This will take some time but in the long run make your migration more seamless.

  • I had to change to a new Apple MacBook Pro.  I deauthorized my old computer, authorized the new one and less than a quarter of my media shows up in the new computer.  Everything that was downloaded from a cd is missing.  Any help?

I had to change to a new Apple MacBook Pro.  I deauthorized my old computer, authorized the new one and the only media that shows up are items with a cloud.  Everything that was downloaded from a cd, including personal movie files, are missing.  It's as if my former library is gone.  How can I find it again? Or is this just Apples way of screwing with me?

No. Firewire and Ethernet are not the same. Ethernet would be used to connect the computers to your network. A Firewire cable is used to connect the computers directly. They are different ports.
The above shows what an Ethernet port and a Firewire 400 port look like.
These are the plugs used for FW800 on the left and FW400 on the right.

I have a new computer and want to remove music from the old computer and move to the new one.  How do I do it?  I have an IPod mini.

Copy the /Home/Music/iTunes/ folder from the old computer to the new one. You can do this using an external hard drive or by connecting the two computers via Firewire cable (if both computers have Firewire ports) -Transferring files between two computers using FireWire - or using your local network via file sharing.

i purchased a new computer, how do i transfer all of my itunes content from the old computer to the new one with out loosing songs, apps, pics ...ect

Copy the entire iTunes folder from the old computer to the new computer to move iTunes content.
As for pictures, copy them from where there are on the old computer to the new computer... this has nothing to do with iTunes.
Alternatively, if both computers are Windows based, use the Windows Easy File Transfer Utility to move everything.

  • Why can't I transfer my itunes kibrary from old computer to my new one?

I am trying to get my old library onto my new computer and the best way for me to do that is take them off of my I Phone 3gs and "transfer purchases" but when I try it the "authorize this computer " shows up and it is already authorized! So I still give my info, and it tells me this computer is already authorized and then does nothing. It keeps going on like that, it's a frustrating circle!

Why can't I transfer my itunes kibrary from old computer to my new one?
    You can very easily.
Simply copy the entire /Music/iTUnes folder from old computer to new computer.

I have copied my iTunes library onto a new computer, but when I play back the songs using the new computer, there seems to be random "miss" or "drop out" during play back, similar to a small scratch on a vinyl record.  Although when I play the same song over again, the "miss" occurs in a different location during the song.  No probs with old computer, just the new one.  I'm onto my third new computer - same problem.  Any suggestions please?

You don't say which version of iTunes you are using, but the symptoms you describe have been encountered by some users with the 64-bit version of iTunes 12.1.
There is an alternative version for 64-bit editions of Windows here:
iTunes 12.1 for Windows (64-bit — for older video cards)
that seems to address the most of the playback issues that some users have been reporting with the full 64-bit version of 12.1.0.77 - including problems with Bluetooth speakers where either sound is degraded or completely absent.  The alternative installer here is the same architecture as most previous "64-bit" versions of iTunes, i.e., a 32-bit application with a 64-bit installer.  The "for older video cards" label appears to be something of a misnomer as some people have reported that this corrects problems found on current / high-spec systems.
Some users have reported that after installing this alternative version it is necessary to adjust the "Play audio using" selection (normally to "Direct Sound" rather than "Windows Audio Session", though this may vary based on your audio hardware/drivers) in Edit > Preferences > Playback to restore glitch-free audio (one part of the reported symptoms is that the "Direct Sound" choice isn't available, usually in Windows 8).  It may also be necessary to ensure that your Bluetooth speakers are active and selected as the default audio device before you run iTunes.
If this doesn't address the issue, you may want to think about reverting to iTunes 12.0 - see Turingtest2's notes on Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates for steps needed to completely remove all installed iTunes components, and for links to the 12.0 installers.
