Moving a library between itunes on vista and itunes on mac and back often

hi there,
I have a macbook pro at home but use a PC at work. I currently have my library on an external hard drive which i cart back and from from work to home. I am running itunes 9 on both platforms and the library is accessed by both versions of itunes. The problem I have is that each time i open itunes on a mac after using itunes on the pc it has to update my library which takes ages (and vice versa too but its slower on the pc to mac transition than the other way around). Does any of you have an idea on how to avoid this please?

the itunes library is in one directory
Do you mean the \iTunes\ folder which contains the iTunes library.itl file, the iTunes library.xml file, the \Album Artwork\ folder, \Previous iTunes libraries\ folder and a few others?
There is no \iTunes library\ folder.
Do you have the same version of iTunes (9.0 or 9.0.1) on both machines?
Do you plug in the drive, hold Shift, launch iTunes then select *Choose library* and select the iTunes library.itl file in the iTunes folder on the external?

  • Difference between a Managed Bean and Backing Bean

    hi
i am new to JSF made my 1st appl today ...
couldnt clearly understand difference between a Managed Bean and Backing Bean , anybody know the difference?
    Regards
    dsdsf

These are two terms that means the same .... A backing bean is a normal web term, in JSF specifically it is termed as managed bean as this' backing bean' configurations in faces-config.xml are termed within 'managed-bean ' tags.
Cutting the long story short its a bean class . period :)

  • Share my Itunes Library between my PC desktop and my PC Laptop

What is the easiest way to share my complete Itunes library direstly between my PC desktop and my laptop?
I do have an external hard drive that I can save it to first.
Do I also need to authorize my laptop?
Is there a cable such as an ethernet cable that I can hook between computers to share the files directly?
Dell Dimension 2350desktop/Dell Inspiron B130 Laptop   Windows XP

Thank you Joe - I tried this but it's only showing a teensy amount of music - the stuff on the second users account as opposed to the giagntic library on the 'main' account. I actually went to a Genius Bar and they said that apple doesn't really want you to share music between accounts - parents don't want to hear their kids music etc. Which seemed strange, but it might be the case sadly   Thanks anyway!

  • Moving music files between iTunes on laptop and iTunes on external HD

Hi - my music file became too big for my old macbook pro (120 GB HD space) so I followed Apple's instructions and moved it to an external hard drive. That worked fine, I just plug the HD in and there is all my music.
But, is it possible to restore the connection to a small number of songs in my iTunes on the laptop, so I would just have a "mini music library" for traveling around with the laptop? The names of all the songs show up in iTunes when I open it without connecting the external HD, but they "cannot be found."
Also, I just bought 5 songs and forgot to plug in the external HD, so those 5 songs are now the only songs that actively live in my music folder on my laptop. How do I move just those five files over to the external HD?
I hope all this is clear!
    Thanks.
    Fran

    you don't need two libraries.
iTunes can manage files which are stored in various locations. you can either use this script ...
    [_*Re-Locate Selected v1.1*_|http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=relocateselected]
This script will re-locate the files of the selected iTunes tracks from their current location to a new user-chosen folder. iTunes will be updated with each track's new location and all of each track's meta-data will be preserved. Option to remove the files from their original location. (I don't advise using this on more than an album's worth of tracks or so at a time; re-locating dozens of tracks' files to a single folder doesn't seem to make much sense to me.)
NOTE: If your "Keep iTunes Media folder organized" preference set, you will not be able to create new folders in or re-locate files within the iTunes Media folder; outside is OK.
... to move selected content from one to another location, or do this:
    (1) go iTunes > preferences > advanced and temporarily point +*iTunes media folder location+* to either your local iTunes folder or the external. on the same tab, ensure +*copy files to ... when adding to library+* is check marked.
    (2) select (highlight) the files to be moved in iTunes, right-click (or ctrl-click) and choose +consolidate files+ from the pop-up menu.
    (3) remember to point +*iTunes media folder location+* back to to the original spot.

  • Finding moved music library with iTunes

    I have a big problem
I had to move my music from C:\ to J:\
of course iTunes no longer knows where my music is
does anyone know how to make sure iTunes can find it again?
and then I mean without having to re-import everything
if I do that iTunes will no longer know I already have some episodes of the podcasts I listen
or what songs I have listened and how often
a other problem is that J:\ is a external HD
and I'm afrate windows will give it a other drive letter when I reconnect it
does anyone know how I can make sure it will always be J:\?

set the drive letter for j:\ to Z:\ so it will always mount to Z:\ and deleted& rescanned my library, so far windows keeps putting the HDD on Z:\ so so far so good

  • Moved iPhoto Library between Accounts. Oh Crap...

I moved my iPhoto Library from iPhoto '08 from one account to another (on the same Mac), but now the Library file on the new account is blank and unrecognisable by iPhoto. HELP!!!!!

    Kim:
    Try the following:
Run iRepair on your iPhoto LIbrary package as follows:
1 - download iRepair and launch.
2 - click on the lock and enter your admin password
3 - click on the Select button and navigate to and select the iPhoto library.
5 - set the owner to your short admin name with read, write and execute privileges.
6 - set group to staff or the current group with read, write and execute privileges
7 - set others to read only
6 - click on the Apply button.
See if this will correct the problem.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • I moved my library from laptop to desktop and now it's all messed up...help

So I moved my itunes library from my laptop to my desktop and when i synced the my 4GB ipod for the first time (formerly held about 700+ songs), it will now only hold around 400. Any ideas why it's doing this?

Did you use the iPod to move the music from one computer to another?
If so, you may still have some files on there.
Restore the iPod to reclaim the storage space.

  • Seamlessly switching between iTunes for Mac and Windows

The path on a Windows machine to my iTunes is something like N:\My Music, where N is mapped as a network drive. On a Mac, that same Drive N is mapped as “fireserver” on the server machine. So on iTunes for the Mac, it would have to be //servername/fireserver/My Music or something along those lines.
Here’s the problem. The iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Music Library.xml are the files in Windows that store the information regarding which iTunes music is there, as well as the playlists and their contents. Therefore, if I move from one machine to another, as long as each has the server’s drive mapped as N, I can copy those two files from one machine to the other and it serves two purposes. First, it is a backup of sorts of my iTunes library. Second, I don’t have to update the information on two computers but rather one, and then copy the files to have an identical library, including playlists.
I would like to sync my iPhone and iPod(s) with my Mac, but I have a Windows machine, and need to continue to use that Windows machine to do other things with iTunes, such as port music to the backyard of my house. I don’t know how to keep the two iTunes libraries in sync since the xml and itl files refer to files and folders within N:\My Music. Even if I laboriously edited those files and did a global replace, that would be a one shot deal, and thereafter, I would have to update on the Windows side and on the Mac side.
So here is the question. Is there a way that I can set up my Mac so that when I refer to N: it knows that I mean //servername/fireserver (I’m not sure if I have the syntax right, but I think I’m getting my point across)? In this way, the files would point to N:\whatever and the computer would know that I mean //servername/fireserver/whatever.
This would solve a major problem for me.
    Thanks in advance!

I have been really surprised by the lack of responses to this post. I'm thinking, this is such a typical thing that people would want to do - sharing their music with friends and family - I can't be the first to have the problem. Plus, I've always received such quick, expert advice on this forum to other questions since buying my Mac a couple of months ago.
But now I'm wondering whether there is something else going on that precludes the resident experts from answering. Is sharing music as I've described illegal? Maybe that's why everybody's keeping quiet, i.e., if you tell me how to share my songs with a friend then you're assisting in copyright infringement.
I didn't think it was illegal to share music with a friend in this way, as long as the songs you've downloaded from iTunes aren't shared on more than four devices or whatever. If it is illegal I'd sure like to know. That would also explain the radio silence.
    Thanks.

  • Do I try to transfer itunes library to my Windows Vista, or upgrade my mac?

    Hi,
This is my first time posting, and I was wondering if someone could help me out. I'm pretty computer illiterate so if someone could talk me through exact steps, I'd really appreciate it.
My husband got a new iphone 4 and it won't work on our mac. (Mac is version 10.4.11) He was able to sync it to our windows computer (did homeshare), but all of our music is on the mac. Is there any way to transfer all of our music, apps etc... to the other computer, or should we just try to download an upgrade to the mac. My husband isn't sure if an upgrade will work on our mac. My kids have 3GS iphones and they still need the songs on the mac. Can I have the songs on multiple computers? What about songs that were purchased years ago? How exactly do I transfer it all?
    Any advice would be appreciated

Does anyone know if the model I have:
    Hardware Overview:
    Machine Name: Power Mac G5
    Machine Model: PowerMac11,2
    CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (1.1)
    Number Of CPUs: 2
    CPU Speed: 2.3 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB
    Memory: 4 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.15 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: 5.2.7f1
will be able to download Mac OS 10.5.8 (or some other software that can be upgraded to that)
or if my computer is too old. (It is not a fossil)
I was wondering what software I would need, and where to get it. I didn't want to bother the geniuses because I figure with all that is going on at the stores these days, they are probably so busy. I was wondering if there was anyone here that is computer savvy that would know.
    TIA

  • Sharing iPhoto library between two user accounts on the same Mac

My wife and I each have an iPad and we share the same iMac. We each have our own user account on the iMac. She syncs with her account, and I sync with mine. This works fine in general, but we store all our photos within iPhoto on my account. She is therefore unable to sync the photos to her iPad. The same is true with the music that we keep on the iTunes in my user account.
Is there a way for her to sync so that the photos and music sync with her iPad also?

I have used a program called iPhoto Library Manager (http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/) for years and it has worked like a charm. The program handles all of the permission/subfolder aspects transparently. Our iPhoto library is stored in my wife's default location, but I have seamless read-write access to it. When I open iPhoto, I see the same thing she does, and I have complete control.
To answer your question about music, there are a couple of approaches. If you turn on Sharing in iTunes, and your wife's iTunes is set to look for shared libraries, she'll be able to have complete access to play anything in your iTunes library (as long as you have iTunes open). I believe she also has rights to copy files from your iTunes library into hers.
That's great for playback on a Mac, but what you can't do is sync an iPod/iPad/iPhone with someone else's shared library, so here's how I do it:
    1) My iTunes library is our "primary" library, located in my Public folder (where other users have read-access).
    2) In my wife's iTunes, library, I hit keystroke Apple-O to add content to her library, and navigated over to my iTunes Library in my public folder to select it. Once I did this, her iTunes library looked like mine.
    3) The key thing is that under her iTunes Advanced Preferences, I ensure that "Copy content to iTunes library" is deselected. Otherwise, it would make a copy of my entire library on her side, and that would chew up a ton of disk space.
Note that I don't think it's entirely necessary to have the iTunes library in the Public folder. It could stay in the default location as long as you changes your music folder to have read-access by other users. I moved mine before I knew any better.
When I add new content to my library that my wife wants, we hit Apple-O from her side and add it to her library. This setup is kludgy, but a) both users can sync the music to iDevices and b) it doesn't require having two copies of everything. Note that unlike the iPhoto Library Manager solution, this is a static thing. You have to manually update the "satellite" library to keep it up to date with the main one.
I'm not in front of my Mac, so some of my notations may not be completely accurate.
    Good Luck!

    Hi!!
I am working on the project 'ERM'. I have designed 12 forms using HTML. Can u please give me brief idea how to establish the connection between a back end and front end i.e. between HTML and SQL 7.0. If possible can u provide me the source code for the same.
I will be very thankful to you.

You need servlet and JSPs for the server-side presentation layer, some classes for the business logic, and some mor for the persistence layer either using JDBC or some framework like Hibernate.

  • Moving Premiere Pro CS5.5 to laptop and back to desktop

    Hi,
I have Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 on my desktop computer and I will be travelling for a month in the new year and will need to edit on the go.
Is there a way to deactivate my license/program on my desktop computer and activate it on my laptop temporarily, and then be able to take it off my laptop and put back onto my desktop computer?
Or are you only allowed to move the program/license a limited number of times?
    Hope someone can help!
    Thank you,
    - Dannie

The license allows 2 activations... so just install/activate on your laptop... as long as you have only installed/activated once already

  • Share iTunes library between Tiger and XP Pro?

I just recently got windows XP running on my macbook. I have already imported all my music (as unprotected MP3's) in iTunes for Mac. Since hard drive space will be slim for Windows, I would like to have iTunes for windows use the same library as iTunes for Mac. I'm running MacDrive 7 and iTunes-Windows sees everything just fine, but I have MacDrive set to make my Mac partition read only so as not to corrupt it. This makes iTunes-Windows unhappy. Is there any way to make this work?

Just for your info, Vista ***** whatever you try to do. I'm stuck with Vista on a pre-installed laptop. All experience I have from Vista is bad, don't buy Vista or a computer with preinstalled Vista if you can avoid it.
We have three computers in a home network, one Macbook Pro, one PC with Windows XP, and the Vista laptop. All are using iTunes-8, downloaded and installed last week.
Sharing iTunes libraries using the option to share libraries on a local network works fine between Mac and Windows-XP. The sharing also works fine between the XP and the Vista PC.
But the Vista PC can't access the Mac iTunes library. When trying to open the Mac library, iTunes on the Vista computer says something like "Fetching library info from...". It's the same problem when trying to access the Vista library from the Mac.
We had a similar problem when trying to access shared folders on the local network. Thanks to a tip on this forum how to tweak the Vista registry, the shared folder problem was solved.
I'm think some registry setting in Vista might solve iTunes shared library problems. Maybe some Windows freak knows how to patch the registry to solve this issue.
Otherwise the solution is to trash Vista, and install Windows-XP.
