Moving a MacBook Pro

Hello, I think moving a laptop around while it's on it's never good, but I would like to know how bad it is, because I sometimes do it and I don't want to crash my brand new 13" MacBook Pro. If someone had advices I would be very grateful.
Thank you very much and regards!
Dani.

Hiya,
I have never had any problem moving my Macbooks around; my 2005, is a bog-standard MB, with Hitachi Hard-drive disk (HDD), and the 2010 has a solid state drive (SSD) HDD.
There is an article on Wikipedia that might interest you.
Also, apple have an *support article* that you might find useful.
It all depends how forceful your movements are. Just lifting it up and tilting and putting it down is fine. But if you shake it, and drop it onto, e.g. a cushion or so, then you may find the book's operation is affected. Once a DVD is in the drive, you can obviously only tilt it so far before gravity will lift the DVD off the tray.
Hope this helps.
Good luck

  • Moving from MacBook Pro to Macbook

I am giving my daughter my macbook pro (2008 model) for her to use in college. I bought a brand new macbook. I am trying to transfer my stuff from the 'Pro to the 'Book but when I do so I keep getting an error message. I used wireless first and when that did not work I tried ethernet. Since the 'Book does not have firewire but I have save my entire 'Pro on an external disk with TIme Machine, can I use TM to restore the files, etc., to my 'Book? What other options do I have for moving my stuff from one to the other? Thanks for your help.

If you have an external hard drive that supports a USB connection you can transfer files via this hard drive. Similarly you can use a flash drive if you have one with sufficient capacity to conveniently move your data. Here's what you most likely will need to transfer:

  • Moving the Macbook Pro with a sudden movement makes hard drive screech.

Whenever I move my Macbook Pro from my lap to somewhere else I hear the hard drive make like a little teeny tire screech noise. I noticed this the time I was in my room in total silence when I put the Macbook down on the bed.
Its just a concern I have that I might wear out the hard drive faster this way since most of the time I'm moving the computer from place to place. Anyone else have the same concern?

The screech you hear is the drive quickly moving its read-write heads off the platters and onto a small ramp to prevent shock damage to the heads and platters.
The sudden motion sensor (SMS) does this in anticipation of a possible drop. This does not mean there is an actual danger of damage to the drive when this happens.
Nevertheless, I would avoid it if possible. It's an emergency head retract operation that can damage some drives over time. This may not be the case with the drives Apple is using, but we don't know for sure.
The SMS can be disabled as described here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1934
But this will increase the chance of data loss in the event of a real drop.

  • Moving new Macbook Pro HD to old Macbook

    Hey everyone,
I've used this site quite a bit over the years to fix various issues I've had with my mac's.  I've been trying to research my current question, and it seems like it shouldn't be an issue but since I'm not as mac savvy as the people on this board I wanted to throw it out there to a) make sure it can be done and b) it's not a bad idea for some reason that I'm not considering.
The hard drive on my old 13" 2006 Black Macbook (Macbook 2,1) crashed last November and I decided to buy a new 13" macbook pro (MD101LL/A).
I decided to see if I could get the old one up and running again and bought a new WD Blue 320gb HD and was able to get it going and installed mac os x lion on it with out any problems (I'd upgraded the RAM to 2.5gb a couple years back).
But I was thinking today, instead of spending $50 on a new HD for my old macbook, what if I took the HD out of my new macbook (500 gb 5400rpms) and put installed it in my old macbook and instead bought a new WD 750gb 7200rpm for my new macbook for an extra $25.  I don't use my macs for anything intensive, not video editing or graphic design but seems to be a small incremental price to pay for a much faster HD.  The main reason I want to get my old computer running again is for travelling or when I take it with me out & about... this way I dont have to worry about breaking/losing/someone stealing my new one.
Also, I just updated my os x to mavericks but doesn't look like it's compatible with my old macbook... Any way to revert and go back to mountain lion?
Would my old macbook be compatible with the new one's HD?
The 500gb HD is currently partitioned with bootcamp but I'm assuming that wouldn't be an issue?
Assuming I can make this swap, is the best way to transfer my data to install the HD in my old macbook and just transfer over what I need?  Is there an easy way (program, app) to move the basic stuff like music, videos, pictures?
    Thanks everyone!

  • Moving to MacBook Pro: Pls Help

About three weeks I split water on my old MacBook and managed to destroy it. Luckily it was baccked up using time machine and the insurance company has covered the cost of a replacement. I've decided to buy a MacBook pro but I have some questions.
    1. How difficult is it to restore my documents, iTunes and my iPhone settings? Do I just connect the external
drive and follow instructions? Any advice would be really useful.
    2. I was running leopard on my old mac. If I restore settings using time
machine, will snow leopard still be the operating system on the new MacBook pro?
    Many thanks
    Nik

    1. One of these Time Machine tips might help you. I think #14
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1964018
    2. If your new MacBook Pro hard drive was imaged with Snow Leopard, then I think it has to stay Snow Leopard 10.6 or newer version. I don't think you can load Leopard on a Mac made for Snow Leopard, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

  • Moving your MacBook Pro

Hi! I was wondering about something. I usually leave my MacBook in sleep mode for the day unless I have to move it or I go to sleep. Now, sometimes I need to take the MBP from the desk and take it with me in my backpack. Is it safe to leave it in sleep mode or it could hurt it somehow? I shut it down until now, but I was wondering if that's overkill.
    Thanks in advance!

As long as the machine is physically protected putting it into sleep mode is fine. By physically protected I mean if you are transporting it make sure it's in an safe carrying case so if it's bumped it won't get dented or if heaven forbid the case is dropped it has enough padding to protect the machine from getting physically damaged. Shutting it down is overkill, remember to put it to sleep all you need to do is close the lid unless of course you are using it in clamshell mode connected to an outside monitor, keyboard and mouse. Apple suggests shutting down is really only needed when you are not going to be using your machine days at a time. I leave mine on 24/7 and only put it to sleep (close the case) when I'm not using it.
    Regards,
    Roger

  • I have been using a Docupen scanner with Windows 7 so far. Have recently moved to Macbook Pro (Lion); Am unable to connect.... and use.

The driver on planon.com site does not install on the Lion OS; The driver installs but the scanner is not visible while trying to add printer....

No luck.. No devices are visible even in image capture.had raised a support request with planon, the manufacturer of docupen. They say there are no immediate plans for drivers for 10.7; Their position is that Apple should release a patch/upgrade to Lion to allow more hardware to be used...
    Any idea about Apple's position?

  • Macbook pro 17 [early 2009] information

    Hi everyone,
I'm about to buy a Macbook Pro 17" but before buying it I would like to have my information confirmed, so I'll summarize it (this will also help everyone who wants to buy a Macbook Pro 17" too).
I'm aware that the problems I'll speak about are not happening on all sold MBP but only on few of them and that many MBP have no problem at all.
Here is the list of the problems and qualities I read about.
Let's begin by the problems (I always prefer to finish by something good )
1°) screen is dimmer and seems to have too much blue.
=> the problem seems to be due to a software problem which happens when using a UMBP 15" build or settings on a 17" and doesn't seem to appear on provided build.
2°) The screen flickers when on battery with low brightness.
=> seems to appear most of the time when battery is under 15% with the 9400
3°) red or green lines on the screen (often on gaming)
=> seems to be a heat problem (partially resolved when forcing fans to rotate at high speed). I think that newly produced MBP haven't the problem (still to confirm).
    4°) battery doesn't last 8hours
=> the battery use depending on what you do on the laptop, you will get the 8hours provided only by surfing on the web on HTML/CSS pages with half brightness. Otherwise you won't have them but the battery will still be good.
I think these are the main possible hardware problems (won't speak about the problems I've seen only once) so let's speak about qualities.
1°) Screen seems to be quite good. Some image professionnals said they were nearly able to work on it (remember that photographs hate punchy colours because the printers have paler colours) when they had anti glare option. Glossy screen seems to be good too.
2°) It has a anti glare option.
    3°) The performance seems good.
4°) seems silent when not using GPU too much
5°) glossy screen don't seem to disturb many people, it's just a matter of moving the screen from few centimeters.
5°)And of course it runs MacOS
remarks : mini display adapters and remote are not bundled anymore. You'll have to buy them when purchasing your laptop.
The anti glare bezel is an aluminium one.
Here is a topic which contains a photo with glossy 17" and 15" side by side.
Here you can see anti glare bezel.
I think I've summarized all the useful things I read, do not hesitate to complete if needed.
Now I have some questions. Since I'm not able to see it form my own eyes (haven't any store near home), I would like to have your opinion on the case quality and on the screen brightness(especially the anti glare because I work with many windows near me for a long time and I wouldn't like to be tired after two hours(I'm not with T60P)). I don't really trust photo to render brightness but do not hesitate to post some.
    I'm able to see a UMBP 15" and a MBP 17" matte finish with X1600 to compare, I also own a T60P.
This will be my first apple so I've another question, I read that apple will refund without any question if you return it within the 14 days, is that true (I'm in France)?
Thanks in advance for answers and sorry for my bad englih, I haven't praticed for a while .

    Hi Bad_Crow,
I have just written this quick post to comment on your question of case quality as compared to the ThinkPad T60.
I had used ThinkPads for over 10-years, and I had been an Advisory Member of Lenovo's Product forums.
Ever since Lenovo had dropped the magnesium exterior of the T40 series for the plastic exterior of the T60 and T500 series, ThinkPad case quality has become horrible. Yes, the new ThinkPads have an internal roll cage, but that does not help. The plastic still cracks, the keyboard still flexes, and the screen still bends. These issues have been widely reported at Lenovo's forums.
I had moved to MacBook Pros because they are the best-built notebooks on the market today. They are far more durable than any ThinkPad. The anodized aluminum is a far superior notebook casing than anything that has been offered by Lenovo. The precision aluminum unibody enclosure makes the MacBook Pro even stronger.
MacBook Pros have no cracking issues, no keyboard flex, and no screen bending issues. Yes, there have been a few reports, but every company has its' lemons.
Should you have any case issues, Apple will fix or replace it quickly, where as Lenovo will take months.
I have noted links, with more information on the anodized aluminum that has been used for MacBook Pro cases, for you to check out.

I hope that this helps answer your question of case quality.

  • IMac 27" Static Flicker when using Displayport In from Macbook Pro

    Hi all,
    Sorry about the long title
I have a late 2009 27" iMac with ATI 512Mb 4850 card and 8Gb RAM. I also have a 2011 Macbook Pro that I connect to the iMac via Displayport to use it as a screen.
The iMac sometimes displays an annoying flicker and "static" like screen issues when displaying the Macbook Pro screen. This does not happen all the time but seems to be more prevelant when I have had the machines on for a long time, or if I use them in the morning after they have been asleep through the night.
I've tried the cable (a Belkin one) both ways round and have tried wiggling it at certain points to see if that changes the static but nothing happens. I have also purchased a cable from Apple, but I did not realise it would only work for Thunderbolt drives, not displays.
I have a video of the issue here:
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/1nkykc8j13qg9px/2012-04-13%2014.32.38.mov
    Any ideas?
The only thing that I have chaged about the iMac since purchase is I now run the OS on an external Firewire drive as the internal HD sounds like it's failing (it makes a very loud seeking noise ALL THE TIME and slows down a lot when the machine has been on for a while. The external drive does not do this).
    Thanks
    Ryan

    Hi, sparky96,
I do not have a satisfactory solution. The best I can do, as a work-around, is adjusting the iMac to its brightest setting, moving the MacBook Pro brightness several notches darker, and then aiming for a compromise in the image I'm working on.
As a result, I have no idea what someone else sees on his or her computer. However, that might be the case even if I could match the images on my two Macs. Others might have PCs that display reds as browns, for all I know. I do know that when I view a video on YouTube, it looks more or less the same on each of my computers. The human eye seems to make its own interpretive adjustments.
I have similar problems preparing artwork for printing. No matter what I do to calibrate the displays, the output from my various printers never looks right, and when I get back a book cover that's been printed on an offset press, I'm happy if it's reasonably close to what I get from my desktop printers.
I wish Apple, and Adobe, and Hewlett-Packard, and commercial printers and the whole industry would devise some kind of universal standards -- but I doubt that will ever happen.

  • Macbook pro not asleep

+I have changed this from the pro site as it was not getting any clues submitted+
I bought a Belkin 800 Express Card, which has two ports that I have connected to a new Quadra Lacie 320gig and the other to a 250 Lacie. All works fine in video editing.
The problem I have is that I need to know a procedure for disconnecting the two drives and be able to sleep the macbook pro. which is a state that I normally leave it in.
I eject the drives. switch them off. unplug the Expr.card and select Sleep. even though the sleep light blinks, it is not asleep as many hours later it is warm and will not wake with the normal tap of a key and has to be restarted, by switching off then back on again. dave

    +Moved from macbook pro postings.+
Just tried some thing else. Ejected the two drives. Unplugged the Express. Selected sleet. Came back after an hour, the computer was cold, normal sleep light, tap a key it woke up. moved the cursor to select the dock, nothing. Just locked up. So again a restart. Dave

  • IMac 27-inch display at brightest is darker than MacBook Pro

I'm using Photoshop to create illustations for a marketing video, shifting the work between a 27-inch 2012 iMac and a 15-inch 2009/2010 MacBook Pro. When I move the work from the IMac to the MacBook, the images are way too bright. Conversely, from the MacBook Pro to the iMac, they appear way too dark. I have set the iMac display to its maximum brightness and dimmed the MacBook Pro almost to the level where it loses contrast. I have a Huey calibration system, but it's no help in this situation. Ambient light does not affect the general appearance on the 15-incn screen, with automatic adjustment off.
My illutrations will be included in an iMovie HD video for use on the Internet. I need a brightness and contrast combination that will look good on YouTube and various websites. Previous videos were okay, using illustrations from the MacBook Pro and an older Mac Pro with 23-inch Cinema Display (no longer in service). This suggests I should trust the laptop as the final setting rather than the iMac. If so, does that render the iMac defective for this kind of work?
I did try various display settimgs under System Preferences, but it's a question of what matches best with YouTube and other websites.
    Suggestions anyone?
    Thank you!

  • Mid 2010 macbook pro freezes and restarts when moved.

My macbook pro crashes daily and sometimes I have to keep turning it on for about 5 minutes because it doesn't start up it just beeps. once it starts up it tends to crash when moved even slightly. I have the crash reports and I'm hoping someone can help me. This problem started to occur once I upgraded to mountain lion and I dont know if the problem has to do something with mountain lion or if it's just coincidence. I searched around on the web and think that maybe it is my logic board. Thank you in advance.

There was a similar thread in here yesterday.
This can be a mechanical issue: a loose connector, broken wire or cracked logic board that causes power from the battery to be interrupted when the Mac is jostled. Unless damage is grossly evident, tracking down the exact point of failure is an exasperating Sherlockian exercise.

  • I'm moving from windows notebook to MacBook Pro. When teaching I use a USB quality pointer device and want to know it the MacBook works with it

    Greetings,
After using only Windows computers at work and home our company leadership now allows us to purchase Mac Pro Books if we desire. I am VERY excited!!!
Both of our sons work as engineers in Silicon Valley and will not purchase anything but Macs for years.  Both son's schedules hinder me to get the answers quickly from them so I am seeking advice from you.
I love the idea of finally getting a Mac but have some questions and need to find a source to answer my questions before I send in the request for the new computer. If any of you could respond to these "beginner" Mac questions it would be wonderful.
    1. I teach a large variety of classes using Powerpoint style presentations. I own a very nice wireless USB remote that I use to move between slides.  Will the ProBook allow me the ability to use my remote? If so is there anything I need to know to make it work?
    2. What are the tradeoffs of the 13 inch ProBook versus the 15 inch model?
    3. What external devices/equipment should I plan to have available to be effective in an office environment?
    4. In moving from Windows to Mac what is the best was to bridge the learning curve so I can become effective as quickly and effectively as possible?
I am very excited to make this change and your advice would be so appreciated.
    Blessings,
    David

    David,
Have you checked the Web site of the manufacturer of your wireless USB remote, to see if their product supports MacBook Pros?
In general, the 13-inch MacBook Pro has less powerful hardware than the 15-inch model. A detailed comparison can be found in the right-hand column of the table here.
Which external devices/equipment do you currently have  to be effective in an office environment with your Windows computer? The list is likely to be similar with a computer that runs OS X.
Which applications do you currently depend upon under Windows? That might be the best guide to providing advice on how to best adapt to OS X.

  • I'm using ezcap.tv 116 ezgamer capture card to record my PS3, this is on a windows laptop, Im then moving the recorded videos in mpg format over to my MacBook Pro to use IMovie to edit them to upload to youtube but it won't let me import them.

I'm using ezcap.tv 116 ezgamer capture card to record my PS3, this is on a windows laptop, Im then moving the recorded videos in mpg format over to my MacBook Pro to use IMovie to edit them so i can upload them to youtube but it won't let me import them, even after changeing them to MP4 format, it just comes up with the message: "No Importable Files None of the selected files or folders can be imported. Change the selection and try again."
Ive even tried opening in itunes and copying from thier but they wont open in Itunes, no message or anything they simple just dont open. its strange because it does open in quicktime player.
please if anyone has any ideas that can help me please let me know XD thanks.

First problem: You're fine. The hotter it gets, the more the fans spin up. The computer is designed so that at max load, at max fan speed, it won't overheat (unless it's obstructed by something, e.g. sitting on your bed swallowed by a comforter). It's not the best thing to keep it that toasty for days at a time, but a couple hours at a time shouldn't be a problem.
Second problem: If something in the trash won't delete, just use Secure Empty Trash and it should be fine. Since .torrent files are quite small, it should only take a couple seconds.

  • How do I import an iPhoto Library  (V.7.1.5) created on my old MacBook (10. 6.8) into my new Macbook pro (10.9.1) running iPhoto 9.5.1? I tried copying onto memory stick and moving to new mac, but new iPhoto doesn't recognise the library.

How do I import an iPhoto Library  (V.7.1.5) created on my old MacBook (10. 6.8) into my new Macbook pro (10.9.1) running iPhoto 9.5.1? I tried copying onto memory stick and moving to new mac, but new iPhoto doesn't recognise the library.

So what exactly did you copy over? If it's a 12 gig iPhoto Library then it sounds like the files are there. Perhaps the copy went wrong along the way.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
