Moving a Movie between Apple TVs

Started an iTunes rented movie on my ATV. Shortly thereafter I wanted to transfer it to another ATV in another room. The second ATV would not complete the transfer because it was necessary to stop the playback on the first ATV. I understand that, and stopped playing the movie, but could not find a specific "stop" or "delete" control. After putting the first ATV to sleep and turning the Television off, I returned to the second ATV. After restarting it, the movie in question was recognized and available, but I continued to receive the same message and was unable to start the playback of the movie. So I started a different movie without difficulty, only to lose the cost of the first movie.
How can one stop and delete a rented iTunes movie on ATV, freeing the playback for another ATV?
Thank you.

A rental purchased through one Apple TV cannot be played on another device.  In order to play it on multiple devices you would rent it through iTunes on your computer and Home Share it to the Apple TV(s).
Have a nice day.

No one here can answer the question (if or when that might happen). We are users here and do not speak for Apple. In fact, it violates the TOU to speculate about future Apple plans.

  • Moving rented movies between various devices

The iTunes Store Movie Rental FAQ states that "You can move the movie between devices as many times as you wish during the rental period, but the movie can only be viewed on one device at a time." I moved a rented movie from my Mac to my iPhone, but I can't figure out how to move the movie back to the Mac, even while the rental period is still valid.
How do I do that? Is it even possible?

Unfortunately that isn't what I wanted to hear, but had a bad feeling that was the answer. My ATV's are synced from an external hard drive where all my music resides. I maintain a different library on my MB.
It would not be worth the time to link to another library for 1 movie. I guess I'll have to rent movies to that library and then I could move them to another computer or ATV is that correct?
Can I stream a rented movie from my MB to a ATV? If so how?
    Thanks for your help

  • Moving rented movies from Apple TV

I'm having a problem moving rented movies back from my ATV to my iMac.
The scenario is I rent a movie in iTunes on the Mac, move it to the ATV, and after watching it I then try to move them back to the Mac before the rental expires. It won't transfer back even though I'm connected to the Internet.
The "move" option exists in iTunes (I can select either "move" or "delete") in the ATV box. If I select "move" the movie graphic moves over to the Rented Movies field. The problem is that after I click on Sync the movie flips back to the ATV box as soon as it completes syncing so it doesn't become available to watch on the Mac.
I've tried this on several occasions and with different movies. No luck. It looks like it should work but never has successfully transferred back. The iTunes & ATV software are all up to date.
    Any ideas?

Yes. The movie rentals originate in iTunes on the Mac.
Perhaps it's easier to understand my situation. We have a number of young adults in the house. They often want to watch the same movies we rent if we tell them if it's worthwhile. The ATV is in our bedroom and my wife & I don't fancy having a half-dozen twenty-somethings piling on the bed to watch a rented movie. The Mac is in my home office. I would like to transfer movies back to it where they can watch or even transfer movies to an iPod & plug into a dock connected to the TV in our family room. I can't get the movie to transfer back (even though it originated on the Mac).
Normally any rented movies are in the ATV field (in my case called "Dad's Apple TV") and there's "move" & "delete" buttons. What I have been doing is to click on Move and then Sync. The movie icon does initially move to the Rented Movies field but it pops back the ATV field just as it finishes syncing.
Now an interesting thing has turned up this morning. We had rented a movie ("Date Night"...thumbs down) last Friday, watched it last night (Monday), and went to iTunes this morning to try once again to transfer it back to our Mac. This time the movie does not show up in the "Dad's Apple TV" field in iTunes even though it's been less than 24 hours since we first started watching it. The only thing that may be different is we fell asleep watching the movie and woke up hours later with the screen saver on. I can't say we've ever left a movie running through the credits to the very end before now.

  • Is it possible for a hotel to use Apple TVs to distribute movies throughout the hotel as a 'hotel movie system'?

    Hi,
We are a very small resort business that is located inside the World Heritage Area.  Due to this, we can't get broadband or even good mobile phone reception.  Needless to say, the only way we get internet is via wireless internet providers and that can be quite flaky.
We need to establish a hotel entertainment system that can allow us to distribute movies that we've purchased across our internal wi-fi network (to avoid the need to do loads of trenching / cabling etc).
We are thinking about whether Apple TVs can help us do this? i.e.can we prepurchase and download a stack of movies and then make them available across our wifi network via the Apple TVs?  We don't need to charge guests for access, it will be a value-add part of our service.
If this is possible is there also a way we can prevent people from access their personal iTunes accounts via the wireless internet?  At the moment with the limited wireless ability, we couldn't afford to have this brought to a halt due to downloads etc?
    Cheers
    Helen

As Winston mentions, talk to your lawyer as you may be in violation of the terms of use of Apple TV content if you rebroadcast it like that.  There may well be legal ways to do it in your type of situation, but you'd want to be sure.
If you want to block others from using their own Apple TV's, you should be able to set up a firewall rule to block access at your wifi router.  The ports used are listed in the following Apple KB article.  Depending on your hardware, you could either just block ports, or if you have a firewall of your own inbetween the router and your clients, you could right rules based blocking.  Simplest thing is just disable port 5353in your wifi router(s)), but you could also use a rule based firewall entry to block the application, regardless of port.

I purchased a movie on Apple TV and cannot find it on other Apple TVs in the house or on my ipad.  It says I have no purchases, but I was watching it yesterday.  The reception was so bad that I stopped and wanted to view it today.  It has a link to other movies I might like based on buying that movie so its strange it says I had no purchases.

Ok problem solved; signing out of iTunes account and signing back in solved it.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Content rented anywhere else other than on a computer can only be watched on the device it is rented from. If you want to watch a rental on multiple devices, rent it from the computer.

  • Stream between 2 Apple Tvs

I want to buy a 2nd Apple TV and be able to watch their content in any of the Apple TVs without having to sync first to a computer.
    Is this possible?

You can't stream from an ATV to another device, but you can stream from the same iTunes library to both. If you leave your iTunes library online you can stream its content to either ATV. A few people here have also reported that they bought a Mac Mini to use as a media server for multiple ATVs.
You might also wait another day or two as the rumor mill is currently churning at full capacity.

  • Problems since purchasing a Movie on Apple TV

I'm aware that there have been many people with all sorts of issues since the recent ATV 3.0, 3.1 and iTunes 9.xx updates. Thankfully (and rather smugly), I've been relatively untouched by them.
    Until now.
For the first time, I purchased a movie from the iTunes store via my Apple TV. The download seemed to progress at a reasonable speed and I continued to use the Apple TV as normal while the download was running in the background.
The following day I noticed that the Apple TV had 'dropped off' of iTunes' devices list. On the rare occasions that this has happened before, I simply toggle the 'Look for Apple TVs' preference on and off in iTunes and it comes back. Not this time. For the first time ever, I got the 'port 3689' message, which I thought odd.
I restarted iTunes and restarted the Apple TV and it appeared back in the source list and began to sync my purchased movie back to iTunes. Once the sync was complete, the Apple TV promptly disappeared from the devices list again, and the attempt to re-synce resulted in another 'Port' meesage. Strangely though this time the port number was different and was in the 4xxx range.
Another restart of iTunes and ATV reboot and all was well for most of the rest of the weekend. Then I went on to the iTunes store to watch some TV trailers. After watching the trailers I then wanted to watch something from my own library only to discover that 'the format could not be recognised'. A trip to the spare room revealed that once again, the Apple TV had had a bit of a falling out with iTunes and packed its bags.
Another ATV reboot and iMac reboot and all was well again. For a time....
This evening, I find that the ATV disappearing from iTunes about every 15 minutes or so whether it is doing something or not - ie. it disappears when streaming a movie or listening to music.
The only thing I can think (though strange and unlikely) is that something in 3.01 goes astray when connecting to the net (iTunes store purchases, previews) and affects the ATV's local network settings.
    Any ideas?

    Michele,
Thanks for giving me an idea to try. I may set up manual addresses and see if that helps. But that'll have to wait until I can be bothered!, Thanks.
    Mr Churchill,
From your post, I suspect you are thinking along the lines of something generating interference on my wireless network.... I've not added anything or changed my configuration in any way - but there's always the neighbours I suppose.
When I first moved to my current flat, it took some time to find a good spot for the Time Capsule and select the right channel, but when I was having problems, my internet access was badly affected and network transfer speeds were ropey - this isn't the case with this problem.
I'll monitor the situation for a while and see if anything changes. I'll post back if I find anything conclusive.
    Thanks again.

  • Missing movies after Apple TV update

I have two Apple TVs - a 2nd gen one and a 3rd gen one. I also have about 30 movies in my iTunes movies library which, when I connect with that computer on either Apple TVs brings all the content across.
However, since the update, most of that content has vanished from the Apple TV 3rd gen. I haven't updated the 2nd gen ATV and all the content is still there when I link to the computer.
Any ideas what's happened or how I can get them to show up on my ATV3?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
I'd first check that you haven't labeled your missing content as home video and it hasn't simply been moved into this category as a result of it being introduced in the latest software.
