Moving a partially hidden window

I normally run my MBP with an external monitor but the other day I used it standalone so all the windows got "shuffled" onto the MBP screen.
The problem is that the Preferences window for MSN Messenger for Mac 7 (latest version) is now stuck, paritally off the top of the screen such that the title bar and menu/tab bar are behind the OS X menu (in fact, it must be even higher than that).
As I can't see the title bar I can't move the window. I tried moving the menu bar to the external monitor but all that happened was the Prefs window moved with it.
How can I move it? In some Linux window managers (KDE I think) you can move a window by middle-clicking anywhere in the window and dragging while holding down the Alt key - is there a similar thing in OS X? I've tried every mouse button/modifier key combination I can think of.

Unfortunately, as with Expose, the Prefs window disappears when I activate Spaces.
I don't quite understand what you mean. do you mean that the system preferences window moves off screen when you enable spaces? when you enter spaces view (F8 is the default shortcut) you should see all windows in all spaces on all monitors. is this not working?
It isn't displayed, i.e. it disappears. Remember this is a MS app and appears to follow the semantics of modal dialogues in Windows, i.e. they aren't "real" windows. They are a PITA in Windows as it's possible to hide them with another window and they are a pain to find - they don't appear in window lists and you can't Alt-TAB to them.
oh, yes, I forgot about that. I know that MS office Spaces integration was supposed to be fixed in Snow Leopard but I guess that didn't happen with MSN messenger. that's probably also the reason those apple scripts you tried didn't work.
Looking at this from a different angle, where are window positions likely to be saved as the position is retained across reboots. Is it the OS that handles this, or the app itself?
the window positions of an application are stored in the preference file of that application in /users/username/library/preferences. if you quit an application, delete its preference file and relaunch it then it should display on the default screen with default values. however, some apps (like Mail) keep important data in their preference files and deleting them will wipe that data.
Thanks. As you said about Mail, MSN Messenger stores all its data in their, e.g. account details, and the plist file is binary, but a quick Google revealed plutil so I converted it to XML, edited it in vi, and converted back to binary +et voilà+ it worked!!
The window position was 0, -56 so I just changed it to 0, 56
that will of course, do it.
Thanks for your help!
you are welcome.

  • JPopupMenu Partially hidden behind Windows Taskbar

I have a JPopupMenu that is made visible when the user clicks an icon in the notification area (aka system tray). On Wndows, the popup is partially hidden by the Task Bar, and I'd like it to be in front. But I can't see any methods in JPopupMenu or its super classes that accomplish this, such as Window.toFront(). However, even that method only ensures the Window is on top of other windows in the JVM, and whether or not it ends up on top of native windows or windows in other JVMs is platform-dependent. But my experience with using Window.toFront() on Windows OS has been positive.
Just to avoid a red herring, there is a problem with Windows, fixed by XP SP3, wherein tooltip menus for icons in the notification area are obscured by the task bar. See [this forum article|http://www.msfn.org/board/System-tray-obscures-pop-t116207.html&p=757509] for details. I'm running XP SP3, however, and popups from the notification area for non-Java apps are shown on top of the task bar.
Does anyone have a suggestion for how I can get the JPopupMenu to display in front of the task bar? I could use JPopupMenu.setLocation() to palce the popup just above the task bar, but that will be visually undesirable.
I'm using the SystemTray class from the JDIC library because my app needs to work with Java 5. Since the popup menu is a jdk class, I'm assuming the problem is not in JDIC, but I'll check that source vector as well.
Edited by: MidnightJava on Jan 7, 2009 5:44 PM

It seems the problem is indeed with JDIC. [This post|http://forums.java.net/jive/thread.jspa?messageID=273514&#273514] from the JDIC forum says the problem only occurs when org.jdesktop.jdic.tray.TrayIcon is used with Java 6, not with java.awt.TrayIcon using Java 6, and not with org.jdesktop.jdic.tray.TrayIcon using Java 5 or earlier. So the solution is to detect Java version, and use JDIC classes only for Java version earlier than 6. It's an ugly solution, but unless/until the JDIC code is fixed, I don't think there's any other choice.

  • A hidden window opens when I move my cursor over it. How do I change this to having to click on the hidden window to open it?

It used to be if I had more than one window open, I had to click on the hidden window to bring it to the front. Now, if my cursor slides over the hidden window, that window opens. I want to change it back because it causes a problem when typing. If I put the cursor where I want to type something and then move my mouse out of the way, what I type does not show. I am not sure that this is just a Firefox problem. It may be broader.

Moving tabs from one window to another makes the new window vanish. I have hot corners enabled so when I move up to the right corner of my display I can see all my open windows but when I click on the tab that I moved to make it its own window it vanishes

I came up with an alternative solution.
Instead of actually trying to move the JInternalFrame from one JDesktopPane to another, I added a single, maximized JInternalFrame to the left side. When one of the right side frames is to be docked, I merely copy its ContentPane to the single JInternalFrame on the left, set the original to be non-visible, and adjust the properties of the JSplitPane to make the "docked" frame appear.
When the "close" button on the docked frame is pressed, I simply undo this procedure to "undock" the frame and redisplay it on the right-hand side (with its content intact from the docked frame, but in its original position).

  • App icon in Dock dims when it has a hidden window

I have learned that when you open a photo in Preview, for example, then hide the open Preview window using Command+H, the Preview icon on the Dock will dim to indicate the app has a hidden window. Snow Leopard does not seem to do this for me, but it does work on a friend's Mac. Is this a bug or a setting somewhere to turn this icon dim feature on? Anyone?
    Thanks.

Does Apple document anywhere on its web site or otherwise what an App's hidden's features are that would have to be turned on/off with Terminal? I would be nice to know what other features we can do on the Mac that just aren't available in menus, etc., except in Terminal.

  • How to act on a hidden window?

    Hello,
I tried a script to tell an application to run, and then to type Keystrock 'Return' to confirm the windows panels appearing at launch:
    tell application "WebInstaller"
    activate
tell application "System Events" to tell window of process "WebInstaller"
    keystroke tab
    delay 0.1
    repeat 2 times
    keystroke (ASCII character 13)
    delay 0.1
    end repeat
    end tell
    end tell
But I would like to hide the application while running, this way i wouldnt see the windows on screen during the process (while the keystrokes would still act 'behind')- so i tried to add this applescript line:
set visible of process "WebInstaller" to false
But seems that once the application is hidden, the keystrokes dont work...I tried all kind of other possibilities, but couldnt manage to do the trick.
Btw, is it possible to act on a hidden window with Applescript?
    Thanks for your help !

Btw, is it possible to act on a hidden window with Applescript?
NO if the target application is not scriptable. With [GUI Scripting|http://www.macosxautomation.com/applescript/uiscripting/index.html] you must always activate the target application before acting on its windows.
YES, however, if the target application is scriptable. For example, the following script will create a new TextEdit document and move its window while it's invisible:
    tell application "TextEdit"
    activate
    make new document with properties {text:"Look at me while I'm visible."}
set size of paragraph 1 of front document to "36"
set {a, b, c, d} to bounds of front window
set theID to id of front window
    delay 1
set visible of front window to false
    set bounds of window id theID to {0, 0, c - a, d - b}
    delay 1
set index of window id theID to 1
    delay 1
    close front window
    end tell
    Hope it can help.

  • Group Chat hidden window blocks mouse clicks in top-left corner of screen

Hey guys, I'm not sure if this is the right place to report Group Chat bugs or not, but we're using Office Communicator Server 2007 R2 Group Chat, Version 3.5.6907.0.
The problem is that Group Chat places a hidden window in the top-left corner of the screen, and intermittently it blocks mouse mouse hovers and clicks.  Many people in our office experience this, so it's not just myself.  Closing Group Chat fixes
the problem, and when you click Exit on the Group Chat tray icon, you can actually see the "Logging out" window appear where the mouse clicks are being blocked.
Here's a pic showing where the transparent Group Chat box is lying over my Visual Studio app, so I'm unable to click File, Edit, View, or Git.  I used UISpy to find and identify
    the transparent window.
    - Dan - "Can't never could do anything"

Another user with the exact issue as described above.  After spending a lot of time troubleshooting the problem I have narrowed down the events that produces the 'hidden window'.  If GroupChatConsole.exe is running and the user locks and then unlocks
their computer, this problem occurs.  This would explain why closing and re-opening Group Chat appears to 'fix' the problem.  If the computer is locked and unlocked again though (with Group Chat running), the problem returns. It doesn't matter if
the main Group Chat window is open or minimized to the task bar or notification area.
We have tried all the basic troubleshooting such as uninstall/reinstall, reboot, etc.  We even imaged a brand new laptop and migrated the user to the newer model, but problem starting occurring again after a few days.
I love troubleshooting challenging problems, but this is something I have never encountered before... and after tirelessly searching the internet, doesn't seem like many others have, either.  I hope someone else can provide some more insight or
clues to permanently fix this problem!
    Best Regards,

  • Need Help moving from mac to Windows

I did search the forum, but could not find it, so I thought I will ask.
I have to move from PowerBook to a Windows XP machine. (I see lots of threads moving from mac to windows but not otherway around).
How do I move the iTunes music. I want to keep the ratings, don't want to redo the ratings for 1000+ songs.
If it was previously asked and answered, please point me towards that thread.

    Folks,
Sorry for the redundant post. I had problem doing this, and was able to make it work. The trick was renaming the file iTunes Library to iTunes Library.itl (with the extension).
Once I did that, it works well.
    Thanks
