Moving a Photoshop Elements 3.0 Catalog -- Restore Fails

I have tried to use the back-up / restore-to-new-location method to move a PSE 3.0 (Windows XP) catalog from my hard drive to a mounted network drive (Seagate Black Armor NAS 220).  The backup works correctly, but the restore doesn't quite work.  The files do get copied to the new network drive location appropriately, both using and not using the full former directory structure, but the catalog file that is created still references the original hard drive locations of the files.  I also tried this after (finally) adding the PSE 3.0.1 patch as well, with the same results.
It is hard to believe that an issue like this wouldn't have ever been  fixed.  Has anyone successfully moved a catalog in 3.0/3.0.1 via this method, or has anyone else seen this issue?  Are there any fixes or alternate methods out there?
Being that the .psa catalog files are Access databases (in the old versions of PSE), I'm about to try directly updating the catalog file for the correct locations, since I can do it fairly easily (i.e. via SQL instead of file-by-file location updates)., but I still think there has to be a way to do this without resorting to modifying the catalog file directly.
Thanks,
Doug Newton

Doug,
First I want to say that I have no idea how effectively PSE 3 will process a catalog or the photo files residing on a Network drive. I mention this explicitly to that you do not interpret any other comments that I make as encouraging you to run from the Network drive with PSE 3.
I have more expereince with this in PSE 4 when periodically using a Backup and Restore scenario to take a catalog and photo files from a desktop machine to an old laptop.
What I did experience was that if photo files were still referenceable at the previous folder location then the PSE 4 Restore command did not update the PSE Catalog pointers to the new folder location. This symptom does appear to be similar to your current problem with PSE 3.
Therefore I changed my process to make the previous folder location not referenceable (even with any automatic adjustments that for userid differences on different machines that PSE Restore would make) before doing the Restore command.  That did solve the problem of the catalog pointers to the photo files of the restore not being updated.
In your case, since you say you know how to do the SQL to adjust the catalog database, that might be a good option. Otherwise you could delete what was placed on the Network drive, make the original photo file folders not addressable and then do the PSE 3 Restore again.
A general but I think important comment.
Usually I do not recommend people upgrading to a new version just for the sake of upgrading. However in your case, you are running version 3 (which was the very first version which had the Organizer combined in to Photoshop Elements) and yet you are expanding your use of Windows operating system functions to practices common now but not common for consumers back in 2004 when PSE v3 was first available.
Therfore I suggest that you consider upgrading your version of Photoshop Elements.
I am not saying go to PSE v8. PSE 7 does seems to be still available from reliable sources.  Some people still run PSE 5.

    Hi JuVé Photography,
Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling Photoshop Elements 12 completely? Sometimes that error can occur if the current installation became damaged.
You should be able to download the installer again if you need it from here: Download Photoshop Elements products | 12, 11, 10

  • Photoshop elements 5.0.2 restore catalog

I recently had to rebuild my Vista 32 bit operating system.  After that I installed PSE 5.0.2 and Premiere Elements 3.0.2 again.  After the installations had completed I started PSE with the "view and Organize photos" option and then went to RESTORE catalog so that I could restore from a full catalog backup I had taken earlier.  The restore appeared to be successful but when I remove the last CD from a multi-CD backup, PSE just seemed to freeze up.  When I start the task monitor it indicates that PSE is "not responding".  After that I terminate PSE.  I have reinstalled both Adobe applications several times with the same results.  I have also deleted the MY Calalog.PSA entries and all entries in the my pictures folders so that the next catalog restore I did would have a clean start.  Nothing changed.  I have thousands of photos in this catalog and really need to get it restored.
I should add that the first time I restored the catalog after reinstalling PSE it appeared to be successful.  The collections and tags were there.  I then decided to create an new catalog with the name "My Catalog 2009" for any future pictures to reside in.  After that I was never able to get PSE to run again.  Anytime I started it, it appeared to freeze up.
I checked another thread with a similar problem that suggested starting PSE and hitting cntl, alt, shift inorder to get to catalog selection entries.  I did that and renamed "My Catalog" to something else.  Then when PSE started I created another catalog and put on picture in it.  That worked fine.  Then I restored the catalog from another full backup,  thinking the one I had previously used was bad.  But the same thing happened again.  After the restore had complete PSE froze up.  All my full backups can't be bad.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Greg

I'm not sure about the backup problem.
Freezing when you open PSE 5.0.2 in Vista is fixed via this: http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb400848&sliceId=1
Guess: This could fix the backup problem as well.

  • Photoshop Elements 7: Repair catalog taking hours, and still running?

In Photoshop Elements 7, is it normal for file/catalog/repair to take several hours?  I have, probably a few thousand photos.
I'm moving to a new computer, and wanted to clean-up the catalog before backup/restore...

No, that's not normal.  For a catalog of that size, it should take no more than a minute or so.
I recommend rebooting your computer and then trying it again.

  • Photoshop Element 5.0 Catalog Launch failure

Photoshop 5.0 catalog has stopped working for some reason and when opening in the usual way from start up goes through the normal routine until it reaches "initialising threads" and then cuts out completely (disappears) to a normal backdrop screen. After about 30 second it reports "catolog launch failed". Has any one any idea how to get this catalog operating I have re downloaded the system from Adobe several times with no joy. Im operating in XP. The remainder of the program functions perfectly well until I try to use the catolog to view files. It has worked for many years but suddenly dropped out for no apparent reason. I have recently move the photos file but would expect the program to simply reconnect.

Many of these tips also apply to PSE5: http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshop-elements-faq.htm#_Troubleshooting_Organizer_ crashes
Moving files should not cause this particular problem of Organizer crashing; however PSE will not reconnect on its own. Moving or renaming photos or folders in Windows will cause other problems, and if possible you need to move these files back to where they were, and then do the move inside of PSE, not in Windows.

  • Migrating the Photoshop Elements 5.02 Catalog to a new computer

I have installed Adobe Photoshop Elements  11 on my new Windows 7 computer. How do I transfer the versin 5.02  catalog from my old Vista computer to my new computer?

I would recommend doing a Fail/Backup from PSE 5 to an EHD and then a File/Restore on the new computer using PSE 11.

Your data was well backed up, but you can't use your catalog, because the catalog still points to the old drive. If you had done a backup from the organizer, you'd simply to a restore from the organizer to any new drive or computer. Without losing the connection with your picture files. Next time, you'll know: Use Backup, Restore to move catalog | Organizer | Elements 6 or later
Now, to reconnect your files, see:
    http://psekb.blogspot.in/2013/03/how-do-i-reconnect-missing-files-in.html
If you have restored the pictures folder tree in exactly the same location (except it's a new drive), the reconnection will be easier.

  • Adobe Photoshop Album 2.0 to Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 Organizer catalog conversion

I'm having trouble converting Adobe Photoshop Album 2.0 catalog to Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 Organizer.  I get a Conversion Failed error which tells me to repair with the program that created it.  I have tried several things including deleting all .avi files from the catalog, deleting references to missing files and backing up then trying to convert from an external HD.  I'm running Vista Home Premium on a HP laptop.  The Organizer optimize and repair don't seem to help in this case.
Does anyone have any history with this or advice?

  • Help with Photoshop Elements 10 after system restore

Hi I need some help and guidance. I have successfully installed my Photoshop Elements 10 twice now; once on my own; and following a MS Vista System Restore; with the help of Adobe support . I then worked on it for a day and all was well.
But unbeknown to me at the time, I had a MS System corruption that was causing Boot issues resulting in a forced Restore of my system and both Restores caused the Photoshop elements desk-top shortcut to disappear and a subsequent PSE10 re-install to fail with the dreaded Data7 , and "Application Shared Technologies" and rollback of Orgainizer and Editor etc etc.
I now realise that the two events were connected and the Adobe Support Person helped me get PSE10 up and running but it involved a lot of file permission changes etc, which lost me in the process, which was done remotely. PS Great customer support!!
After sorting out my MS Vista problem due to "Corrupt System" files, I now need to get my PSE10 up and running again; but how?
    Regards John

Have you tried uninstalling and installing again?
    thanks.

  • How do you convert a Photoshop Album 2.0 catalog to Photoshop Elements 13.0 catalog?

I have a lot of photographs with metadata and tags in Photoshop Album version 2.0 and I want to pull thee images, metadata, and tags into Photoshop Elements version 13.0 on a Windows 7 computer. Searching the web I found that this has to be done with the convert feature.  I tried File, Manage Catalogs, Convert and point to the folder holding my Photo Project Catalog.psa file, but nothing happens. It does not apparently see the .psa file.  How do I get my .psa catalog migrated into Elements 13?
