Moving about newly imported photos

Hi there,
I have a fairly large iPhoto library spanning over 800 events and 49,000 pictures, all arranged chronologically. I am about to start scanning in a lot of old memorabilia that I will eventually want to put new scanned images into the relevant events.
The thing I am wanting to know is as new content will be automatically added to the bottom of the event list as it will be deemed to be pretty current by date, is there a way that you can import specific images into specific older Event folders ? I wouldn't mind doing it manually, it's just pretty slow dragging stuff up the Event list order. Even with my Event preview windows set as small as they go and my iPhoto window as large as possible to get as many Event windows visible in a row, there are still more than 100 rows and it can take literally minutes to frag new additions from the bottom of the order to the top.
Thanks,
Craig

No, you cannot import to a specified event. Each new import is processed as an Event.
Easier than dragging and dropping might be to Flag pics to be moved, then select the target Event and use the 'Add Flagged Photos to Selected Event' command in the Events Menu.
Also, with 800 Events, perhaps you need to reconsider your organizing system.
Albums and Smart Albums can all be put into Folders, and Folders can be nested inside other folders. They really are much more flexible than Events.
Fwiw:
I use Events simply as big buckets of Photos: Spring 08, July - Nov 06 are typical Events in my Library. I use keywords and Smart Albums exensively. I title the pics broadly.
I keyword on a
Who
What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 20k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
File -> New Smart Album
set it to 'All"
title contains Seattle
keyword is mountain
keyword is snow
rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
New Smart Album
Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
Keywording takes time to set up, there's no doubt about it. I use Keyword Manager as it's much more powerful than the inbuilt system, and adds the possibility of nested keywords. So, for instance, if I add John to a photo it also adds 'Family'. Now I can add many keywords to a pic quickly.
In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me.

  • Newly imported photos in shared iPhoto library have wrong permissions

I have recently encountered some problems with a shared iPhoto '09 library. When I initially shared it by placing it in users/shared iPhoto prompted to fix the permissions and everything was hunky dory. However, it seems that any newly imported photos do not have their permissions set properly so that the other user of the library on my computer can't do useful things like edit or email the newly imported photos.
Looking inside the library reveals that the permissions on newly imported photos are set to read write for me as the owner and no access for 'everyone'. If I hold down cmd-opt and repair permissions it is all fine - until I import some new photos and then the permissions are wrong for those.
I noted this effect on a pristine iPhoto library that I created to test this as well as my venerable iPhoto library.
Is there something I can do to change this behaviour so newly imported photos get the correct permissions set and the shared user of this library (my wife) is able to edit and email photos I import (and, presumably, vice versa)?

I have made changes to permissions to my old library a number of times. Originally this was to enable sharing in earlier versions of iPhoto and it worked fine. For example I've added a group that consists of myself and my wife and given it read and write permissions and applied that to all enclosed items. I've also had iPhoto repair the permissions as per the startup options.
Notwithstanding this, I created a new library in my pictures folder; moved it to the shared folder; switched accounts and allowed iPhoto to repair permissions; switched back and then imported new photos. While most files and folders inside the package are OK (including any modified files and the enclosing originals/year/event folder) the actual original photo files themselves have the permissions problem. This seems to prevent emailing or editing by the other account.

  • Newly imported photos moved to recovered photos folder

I've been using iPhoto for a while and have a large library, but now when I import photos they go immediately to a recovered photos album and then they disappear when I quit iPhoto. Very frustrated because I have lost many pictures.

    Paul
I confess I'm utterly confused about this.
I've never seen a Recovered Photos Album in the Source WIndow, though I have seen a folder in the iPhoto Library Folder.
IF these photos are in an Album the have to be in your Library.
Can you repeat the process and see if you can find the pics in your Library?

  • Newly imported photos only show up in "photos" and not "events"

When I import photos, why do they now only show up in the "photos" section of my library, and not "events"? I see them in photo stream, but that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about the left-hand column in iPhoto, the sections under "Library."  I saw on the answer to someone else's question that photos can only be in one place at a time, either "events" or photo stream, but then why are they also showing up in "photos"? And I use the "events" thing more than I do photo stream, so I'd like to be able to just automatically have all my events there--OR see photo stream organized by events as well. Does anyone have any suggestions?

why do they now only show up in the "photos" section of my library, and not "events"?
If they are in the Photos listing then they are also in Events somewhere. These are two view of exactly the same material - two windows into the same room, as it were.
Right-click one of the photos and select 'Show Event' from the resulting menu.

  • Why do my newly imported photos "disappear" after I close the iphoto library?

I connect my camera or iphone and iphoto automatically opens.  I click on import photos.  Photos are imported successfuly.  I can then crop, rotate, enhance each photo.  I then close my iphoto.  When I re-open iphoto my previously important photos are not there.  If I reconnect my camera it will identify the photos that I just imported as new photo and will import them again.  But as soon as I close iphoto they are not saved.  To make this even more complecated my husbands profile allows him to upload photos.  Why is this happening?

You're right the adjustments and changes are applied to the library as they are made.
Is this something that just started happening or is this a new Aperture installation?
If it has just started happening and nothing else has changed on your system then you should start with the Aperture 3:Troubleshooting Basics. I'd specifically look at doing a permission repair and library rebuild.
If this is a new installation where is your Aperture library located? Internal or external disk? If it is external make sure the disk is formatted as OS X Extended.
In either case post back with the specifics of your system.

  • PSE 11 will not make thumbnails for newly imported photos

Running PSE 11 on Windows 7 64 bit. It was making and displaying thumbnails for imported photos fine until recently, but no longer does. Still displaying thumbnails for earlier photos. Windows displays thumbnails fine, and PSE shows the thumbnails during the import process but not in the organiser afterwards.
    I have tried:
    right click - update thumbnail
Repair catalog (which identified that there are problems in the thumbnail cache, but doesn't fix it)
    Uninstall/reinstall
    Still not working.
    Any ideas?

No, the orientation is not the issue, The first set of 4 imported videos were from a GoPro 3 camera, and the one that was lost doing an "update thumbnail" operation was also a GoPro3 fie.
Just now I did another experiment, I chose to update thumbnail from a video file created with my Pentax WG-3 and it worked.
I updated thumbnail on a horizontal and verticle video from my Galaxy S3, and now those are also gone with no thumbnail...
So far the only one that actually works for me is the Pentax video, which is a MOV file. , the GoPro 3 and Galaxy are mp4 files, so it's possible that the mp4 format has something to do with it. This is very frustrating losing my thumbnails like this.... Luckily I have not deleted ver11 yet.
I hope they repair this issue soon.
Thanks for the help so far,

  • Updating newly imported photos into my photo book project

I am making a photo book but I am missing a lot of my photos in the little thumbnails above the project. I started this book awhile ago and it seems that the photos I am missing are ones I have uploaded to Iphoto since I started this project. How can I get the new photos included in the project so I can add them to my book?
    Thanks

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. To add photos to a book project just drag and drop them onto the book icon in the left hand pane.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Newly imported photos are not displaying

Just imported all photos from my card as normal - delted them on the card after uploading - now none of those photos are showing up in iPhoto - all the card is empty.  How can I find these photos?

a best practice to is to never have any computer program (including iPhoto) delete the photos from the card but to import the photos and keep them and then after at least one successful backup cycle has completed and then reformat the card --  I use three very large (32 GB) cards in rotation so I do not reformat for typically a year or more giving me one more long term backup of my photos
what version of iPhoto? are they in last import or last "n" months?

  • Iphoto 11 no longer creates events or list newly imported photos...

iPhoto 11 seems extremely buggy. I think I'm going to downgrade back to the prior version. Anyone have suggestions before I take this action?
    Problems:
    1) When ever I import new photos they no longer show up in new events or the "photos" grouping of all photos. They did get imported though and I can access them by selecting "last 12 months".
    2) If I manually try and split an existing event and all photos in the new event disappear from all listings.
Tried to run that batch chmod app that everyone is suggesting for permission problems but it didn't help. Does anyone know which meta file records events and the all photos listing so I could examine it for whats wrong?

Not really - have you upgraded to version 9.1.1?
    Problems:

This can be a sort issue - they are there but not where you expect - look at the view menu ==> sore events
    2) If I manually try and split an existing event and all photos in the new event disappear from all listings.
How do you "manually" split an event?

  • IPhoto not registering newly imported photos not in library folders

I have a 2010 Mac Mini using Lion and iPhoto '11 and a Late 2007 Macbook using Lion and iPhoto '09 that are having similar issues. When I upload new photos into iPhoto the originals (Masters) folder and Modified folder are not being updated with the new photos. I can see them and edit them and they sync with myiPhone. Yet, everytime I upgrade or restore from a time machine backup it corrupts almost all the photos from Dec 2010 to YTD 2011. I'm not sure why this is broken the way it is but hoping someone here may know why it's doing this.

Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

  • Newly imported photos show up in (reversed) added order . .

. . . . no matter how much I keep changing the option to "Capture date". It works fine while still being in the same session, but if I close LR and then return to it and import new photos from memory card, the same will happen. Are there other ways to permanently set the "Sort" menu? (LR 2.6)

Yes.. I think so, so that other users can browse my albums. But should that mean they get to see the unintended, unedited shots off the SD card - most of which I deleted from my iPhoto?

  • Faces not identifying faces in newly imported photos.

since upgrading and the initial scan, iPhoto 09 has not recognized one face in hundreds of new photos. It just does not know when any face is in a new photo.
Is there a way to force it to scan these new photos?
BTW, We have 3 users sharing one iphoto library in the shared directory.

The problem here is that OS X works very hard to keep your data safe and secure from the other users. You're trying to beat what's built in to the system.
This method seems a little clunky at first, but works very well. Most importantly, it uses the System to do the job for you.
Create a new Account on your Mac, call it Media. Create an iPhoto Library there. (BTW: This will work for iTunes too.)
Enable Sharing on the Library:(Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other accounts. In those accounts, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. The Library will appear in the other source pane.
This means that both users will be able to see the pics. If you want to use a pic then simply drag it from the shared Library to your own in the iPhoto Window. This means that each user can have their own edits.
If you want to add photos to the Library: Log into the Media account for that purpose. Added faces and places in this account will be available to all users too.
To make it all seamless: Set your Mac to log into the Media Account automatically. Set iPhoto to launch on log-in. Then switch to your own account using Fast User Switching.
Net result: a Library that's permanently available to all users but also protected. Each user can have their own versions of the pics if they want.
No partitioning, no permissions issues. Uses no extra disk space. What's not to like?

  • Imported photos

When using iPhoto, newly imported photos were automatically created in an 'Event' which I could find. With Photo, I can see the photo's in my 'recently imported' folder, but don't know how to add them to an existing iPhoto event.  Is it simply drag and drop into the old iPhoto event folder? What about if I want to create a new 'Event'? Can I do that or is it now called an 'Album'?
    Help!

I've got a number of EVENTS called Biking Holidays going back several years.
In Photos, all items with "event" i the name are actually albums, since there are no longer events.
You could create a smart album like this:
Or create anew folder (File > New Folder) and drag your Biking Holidays albums to that folder.

  • Imported photos are not appearing in iPhoto...

Beginning in late August, all of my newly imported photos are not showing up in iPhoto.  However, I see them within the iPhoto directory.  Everything imported prior to late August is just as it should be.  Does anyone know the cause of this and how to fix it?  Thanks!

    Damaged database.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • I renamed the Library Folder in Finder, and then imported photos

Several months ago after first purchasing an iMac, I imported some photos. Since these photos were all from a Mexico trip, I went into Finder and renamed the iPhoto Library folder to "Mexico Photos". What I didn't know then, but certainly do now, is that renaming a folder in Finder is a cardinal sin in iPhoto. Now I have a problem, because yesterday I started importing and organizing hundreds of photos. After creating 97 events with over 1500 photos, I realized that all the newly imported photos are in the "Mexico Photo" file. Since I now have photos from several different events, I wanted to change the folder name to something other than "Mexico Photos". So once again I renamed the file back to the original "iPhoto Library" but after doing that, I couldn't open any of the photos. The 97 events were there, but the photos were all blank. When I clicked on a photo, an explanation mark appeared. After changing the name in Finder back to "Mexico Photos", all my photos and events are visible and I can open all the photos. So my question is how can I change the folder name to something other than "Mexico Photos" without losing all my photos again?

Welcome to the Apple user discussion forums
If you quit iPhoto, rename the iPhoto library package and launch iPhoto while depressing the option (alt) key you can select the library - the newly named iPhoto library should be selectable
The name of the library does not affect operation as long as you have not modified the contents of it
