Moving an FCP project to another drive.

i am new to FCP, and my current project is on a small drive. i want to move that project to another drive. i already transfered the project files manually to the new drive, but before i delete the project i want to make sure my transfer is correct. any ideas?
i mean, is there a special way to move projects? or just the manual way ( the same way you move ordinary files )...
thanx

There are certain folders that go with each project - video capture, audio files, waveform files, render files; these are known as your scratch disk. If you transfer all of these folders to a new drive, you'll have everything you need to be up and running. Sounds like you did that, so just double check that you have all the files associated with your project and you should be good to go.
There is also Media Manager. You can use it to copy all of your files to a new location, among other things. I've only used a little, so rather than explain it wrong I'll just say look it up in the FCP manual.
Hope that helps.

  • Moving images along with project to another drive

I moved several projects (and their related events) to another drive, using Command-drag in the Project window.  I answered Yes to "Move Events?". And the video clips and music moved, but not the still images that were used in the project.  So, for example, if you open up that project, the timeline shows the thumbnail of the image, but on playback the image is not there. (Titles, music all moved OK).
Is there a way to move or otherwise relink the images to the project?  Yikes!

    Yes. Use FILE/CONSOLIDATE MEDIA.

I appreciate all of your suggestions.Add the following line to your config/nsfc.conf:
    TempDir=d:/path
If config/nsfc.conf does not exist, it's alright to create it. See the
    Programmer's Guide for more information.

  • About moving an installed system to another drive.

In the future, I intend to move my install from my very small 9.2gb disk, to a considerably larger one (freshly formatted disk).  What is the best way to do this?  I know there's some way to back up files, but I have a hard time finding this...anyway, I'm just clueless as to what I would do to accomplish any of this.  And what if, just what if I tried to move this from the current ext3 to a Reiser 4?
Question:  Best way to transfer whole system to another drive.  Also, what was that command for backing up the system I know I've seen before, but have a hard time finding every time I think about it.
    Thanks alot!

Using tar vs using cp. There is some info in the forums you just have to dig a few months back. Also google will spit a lot of links if you ask it gently ;-)
Previous versions of the Mini How-To stated that you could also use tar to copy the disk, but this method was found to have a bug.
I have no idea it this is still true but I'm always using cp to move data from one disk to another. Just don't copy /dev, /proc and /sys - they should be recreated and use verbose option with cp.

  • Moving FCP Projects to another Mac

I just purchased a new MacPro and want to move my projects from my 2.7 G5 to my new MacPro. How best is this done? I know files from the project may or may not be in many folders.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Sky........

Move the project files from one computer to the other...via a small hard drive, flash drive...or connect the two via Ethernet and network them.
Where is your media stored? It SHOULD be all stored on one drive, and I mean everything. Captured footage, audio files, picture files...all on one drive. If it is an external drive, simply moving it from one machine to the other works.
If you have it all on your system drive...first off...shame. Second off, GET AN EXTERNAL DRIVE NOW. Then you can use the Media Manager to move the footage from the main drive to the external.

  • Moving my FCP project from one computer to another

I would like to break down a load of footage into subclips on my laptop (footage on external drive) and then move everything to
my desktop (and a different external hard drive).
I know I can transfer the FCP file to computer No2 along with the original downloads to external HD No 2, but is there a way for me to do that without having to reconnect each subclip one at a time?
Please let me know if there is a workflow that I can use, so that i don't have to reconnect each subclip one at a time.
    Thanks
    mp

If you copy everything to HD No2, but give HD No2 exactly the same name and folder structure as HD No1, then FCP just accepts it as the same drive and will work without the need for reconnecting anything.

  • Opening FCP project on another Mac.

I made a project using FCP 5.1. on my 24' intel iMac, i did a media manage and moved the project file and all the files to an external hard drive. Now im trying to open the project up on a Mac pro G5, which had FCP 5.0 but i updated it to 5.1, but when i attempt to open the project file i get a "General Error (41)" message. What is happening, why won't it open?

Try opening FCP first and then open up the project directly from FCP's OPEN menu.

  • Unsupported image format after moving from one project to another

I scanned several thousands of images to my Aperture library. Went thru all of them providing adjustments to many of them, keywords to all of them and adjust date/time to all of them. All of the pics were visible, format is jpeg.
This is a managed library (all pics within Aperture db).
This morning started to restructure the project files (had three of them). After moving couple of hundred images to newly created project file I started seeing "unsupported image format" red screen after clicking the jpeg. 20-30% of the pictures clicked showed on viewer "unsupported image format".
Tried regenerating the previews. Tried command-option start with first fix the preferences option. Then with rebuild option.
Tried moving the pictures back to their original project file.
No joy... Still 20-30% of the pictures show the "unsupported image format".
    Aperture 2.1.
Amy other tricks I could try?
Reported this to Apple aperture feedback of course.

Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network, Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
+Note: there is no importing involved+
The thumbs appear, but the images are added 2 or 3 times each and the events are all messed up.
This happens when you import one Library to another, which you've done by drag and drop:
Creating a black library and over writing the new with the old.
Your problem is arising because of the Network Share. iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, saving edits and sharing the photos.

  • FCP PROJECT IN EXTERNAL DRIVES

    FCP 5
    Motion 2
    DVD Pro 4
I have made 4 FCP movies so that I will have plenty of memory I have purchased 4 external hard drives (LACIEs) each one is named LACIE 1, LACIE 2, LACIE 3, LACIE 4. I have logged and captured video from a camera to each of the LACIEs. The log and capture is good, I have all of the video files in the LACIEs) Each of the LACIEs has a different FCP File in it with a different name i.e. Dog Movie, Cat Movie, etc. Something went wrong. Now when I try to open a new FCP file from my desktop I get the message that a duplicate FCP serial number is already running on my network. I am the only user of the computer. There is no other FCP file open and/or running. So I opened LACIE1 and the FCP file in it Dog Movie and I got the (duplicate serial number is already running on my network) message BUT the FCP file opens and when it does I get a message that my "scratch disk" needs to be reset. Even though the FCP file appears to be open I cannot click on the Systems file or the Scratch Disk file to open them directly from the FCP file, I have to get the message. I am having the SAME problem trying to open ANY of my FOUR FCP files from all of my FOUR LACIEs.
I understand that each FCP file for each LACE has to have the "scratch disk" set to that LACIE. What I don't understand is that do I set the scratch disk to LACIE1 or the Dog Movie in LAÇIE1 or the Dog Movie work File in LACIE 1. What settings do the video capture, audio capture, video render and audio render which are the scratch disk settings have to be set to?
Also, I cannot open the system settings at all because the FCP appears not to be functioning even though the video is showing, then I get the message that "your settings have been changed do you want to save them? If I click yes, the FCP closes and I can't work on it; if I click no, the FCP closes and I can't work on it.
First of all I guess I have to get rid of the duplicate serial number FCP? How do I do that. I thought that by having my four FCP movies in separate external hard drives I would be keeping everything clean. I would appreciate any help anyone could give me. I am completely non-functional and can't work on any of my FCP files.

Is this an FCP 5.0 version and are you running it on an Intel Mac?
If so, the problem with the duplicate serial may be caused by that. 5.0 and Intel are not compatible and there are all sorts of odd quirks, even when it appears to work correctly at times. But this is one that I never heard of before.
That problem only usually crops up when you have the software running on two or more computers on a local network.
To your Scratch Disks; as David has already pointed out, you can have up to twelve of them. What will usually happen is the first one fills up then FCP moves on to the next one. So your other three will be sitting around doing nothing for a while.
The system I use also involves 5 drives but they get used for different things:
The system drive holds my project files in my user space.
Video 1 and 2 are for capturing -they are setup in a software RAID arrangement. Video 3 holds Render Files and stuff. Video 4 is for Mastering the finished product. This way no drive is trying to both read and write at the same time.

  • Moving music and video to another drive

I just installed a second hard drive on my computer and I plan on moving all media (i.e. music, video, pictures, etc.) to that drive. As I was thinking through the process, I realized that iTunes might take issue with this.
Any words of wisdom on how best to make this move without major impact to iTunes? Don't care about deleting/re-adding music and movies to the Library, that's easy enough. My big concern is losing any playlists, preferences or the like in the process. Not to mention what happens to whatever music I actually purchased on iTunes (very little).
Bottom line - am I better off making the move with the existing iTunes application installed and left to its own devices (no pun intended), helping iTunes find the "lost" files it will surely yell at me about, and proceeding from that direction, OR exporting my playlists, deleting iTunes outright (losing any music I purchased via iTunes in the process), reinstalling iTunes from scratch, reimporting the playlists, etc.?
    This should be easy, right?
Thanks in advance for your help.

That didn't work. It did lock the video clip into the layer that it was hovering in when I started holding shift (it would slide left and right but wouldnt go between layers) but as soon as I let go of the mouse to grab the audio track it unselected the entire clip.

  • Moved music folder to another drive, now iTunes won't open

I moved my music folder to another drive but when iTunes starting acting up I moved it back (in fact it got moved around and renamed a few times). I have uninstalled and re-installed iTunes now but still get the same message when I try and open it "The folder "iTunes" cannot be found or created and is required. The default location for this folder is in the "Music" folder". All my songs are still in my iTunes Music folder, everything else seems to be in place. Please help.

    Do a shift-start of itunes.
Press *AND HOLD* the shift key whilestarting ituens.
Keep pressing and holding until you get a prompt to choose an itunes library.
Browse to wherever your music/itunes folder is, and select iTunes Library.itl.

  • Can't open fcp project file - fcp not responding

starts to open project but gets to 23% and freezes fcp...project is being stored on a lacie 250gig protable hd with firewire. never had this issue after tons of work. tried going to a autosave version but tried several and they freeze up fcp
any ideas short of moving all the media to another drive and starting a new project (I was just about to start cutting this project today).

    Welcome to the forum!
Post the version of FCP you're running.
Try opening a new project file, then importing the captured clips into it... might fix this... If you trash your preferences for FCP found in the user/library/preferences/FCP User data folder, you can just click on the application and it won't try to open the last project file.
Can you open earlier project files OK?

  • FCP Project File created in 5.1.4 won't open in 5.1

    Hi All,
I recently had to replace my hard drive. Things could have been worse, but thankfully I saved a copy of a major project to another drive. I successfully reinstalled all my original software including FCP 5.1. The problem is that I was running 5.1.4 for this project and now the file won't open. (General Error 41)
Is it still possible to find a software update for Version 5.1.4?
I have searched the forum and I suspect that the answer is no. It seems that version 6 is the only version available now.
My back-up plan is to find someone in my area who has the 5.1.4 version to open my project file, then export as an xml file. Then I plan to import the xml into my system with the version of 5.1 and I'm back to work.
It's a big project for us and I could really use some reassurance. Thanks everyone.
    Cheers,
    Chris

then click on the Final Cut Studio Downloads, enter your Apple ID and then enter your Final Cut Pro license. Scroll down a bit and click on the Final Cut Pro legacy downloads. It should be in there.

  • Multiple FCP projects presets saving in original settings

I have multiple FCP projects running on seperate hard disks. Each disk is 2TB for video content. For example Project X is on 1st disk & Project Y is on 2nd disk.
Issue I'm having is when setting the capture presets, etc for X, they are on disk 1. However when I go to disk 2 to work on Y, the presets are now set to disk 1! I can't have the presets for Y landing in X cause when I store X on a back up drive, the Y project spends forever trying to find all the "off line" info.
I need all the presets for each project to stay with that project and drive. So no matter when I open a project, no matter what drive it's on, all the info stays with that project and not another project. I've had this problem for years and it's a pain in the *** trying to keep my projects seperated since more & more are running at the same time.
I actually have (3) 2TB drives for individual projects and a 500GB Main drive for my applications.
Is there a way to have mutiple FCP projects on seperate drives, without having to constantly keep changing the presets so one project doesn't overlap to the another project.

My experience is that you have to change your presets and where your scrach drive is going. So when working on project X save to drive 1. and on project Y save to drive 2. Then reset your presets when switching projects. I agree this is a pain but it is the only way I have found. Just keep doing what you have been doing. Let me know if you find a solution for this.

  • How do you share non-networked FCP project?

    Hello
I searched and couldn't find a discussion on this; so, sorry if there is one.
I recently completed loading multiple clips into an FCP7 project.  A concert.  All synced and set up for multi-cam edit.  I copied the project file, the source files and exact FCP file structure to a GTECH mini drive - 7200RPM -- and gave it to some students to edit.  The project opened fine and they are at work.
I am several hundred miles from the students, however.  Normally, when working with associates that live nearby, they just give me back the GTECH drive, and I can check the in-progress work easily.  For this situation, I was going to have the students email me back the FCP Project icon only; since I have the same exact file structure on an external hard drive, I thought this would work since they are not doing rendering, just edit cuts.  The FCP project icon will point to the same files the students use; same locations etc...
My questions are: 1) Will FCP multi-cam edit cuts produce cache files that I need?  Or any other files?  Just trying to minimize what they send via email.  2) Is there a better way to share an FCP project with another remote user?
    Thanks
    Phil

If the drive you are using has the same name and file structure as the drive they are using you won't have to do anything, should open right up (except for render files of course). This is the best way.
