Moving an image is VERY jerky on Photoshop CS4

I am using a Mac Pro 12 core with 16 GB of Ram, and a Nvidia Quadro FX 4800 video card.
When I make updates to my images or move the image around the page, there is a significant delay when viewing the change. Movement is very jerky.  This is incredibly annoying, and just doesnt make any sense.  Mac doesnt make a faster machine, and as far as I know this video card is pretty smokin with 1.5 GB onboard memory.
I have tried all the performance settings and nothing seems to help. Getting CS5 is an expensive upgrade, so I am hoping CS4 is not a complete waste of time and money.
Please help.

Here is an update to the issue...
I formatted my hard drive, upgraded the OS to 10.6.4, installed a fresh copy of CS5 Web Premium (with no additonal fonts or plugins).
The system info is as follows:
Processor: 2 X 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Memory: 16GB 1066 MHz DDR3
Hard drives: 2 X 1 TB (one boot drive, one as work folders and scratch disc)
Video Card: Nvidia Quadro FX 4800 with 1.5 GB onboard memory (brand new - purchased and installed to try combat this problem...it didnt help.)
.....and I am STILL having the same problem.
When I open up one of my PSD layouts, moving an element like the logo around the page is a nightmare. It is not smooth at all. It has a lag of almost 5 seconds before the image updates.
I am at my wits end.
Can someone please help me troubleshoot this.  Where is the incompatibilty now?

Problem is not win 7 or WinXP as your competitor "Opera" can do this.

  • Re: Lightroom 4.3 images do not show in Photoshop cs4

Running Lightroom 4.3 on Vista, I cant pass processed Canon EOS 6D RAW images to Photoshop CS4. when selecting to edit in CS4, Photoshop runs but no image appears. There is no error message. In Lightroom Photoshop editor preferences it makes no difference whether I select PSD of TIFF. Is thsi because CS4 is passed an incompatible RAW file... if so whyt no error message? Anyone any ideas?

You need to make sure Lightroom does the rendering (as CS4's ACR isn't compatible with LR4).  When you choose edit in photoshop, do you get a compatibility warning with a prompt allowing you to choose "Render using lightroom" or "Open anyway"?  If so, choose "Render using lightroom".
If you don't get the prompt, to to Edit menu, Preferences and general tab and click "Reset all warning dialogs".

  • How to add links to different images within an animation in Photoshop CS4?

    Hey guys,
I am trying to create an animation with photoshop cs4, but I was wondering if there is a way for me to add a link to each image as the animation is looping, that people can click on the image that is appearing on the screan at that particular moment and take them exactly to the link, and so on with the rest of the images within the animation. Please Help!!! I have no experience with CS4 as you can see or any other for that matter, so I would really appreciate any information that you can give me. Or if it's easier in Flash... please tell me how!! Thank you soooo much!!!

Exactly as Zeno said. You'll either need Flash/ Flash Catalyst or do it all with JavaScript inside the web design application.

as the title says, on some/many sites, when you scroll down the page, FF gets "stuck" on an image and the page becomes jumbled as it crawls along for a short while, then it will get past the "obstruction" and scroll okay. but scrolling back up it hits the same bump.

When working in inDesign CS4 Mac, I often click on a image to edit it in photoshop CS4 via the edit button in the InDesign links pallet That brings up the file in PhotoShop so that I can make my adjustments. When trying to save the photo in Photoshop the file will note save.
I get the pop up message that the file is in use. So I have to close the InDesign file in order to save the photo, re open inDesign to re-link the image. Very frustrating when working with a customer.... Any one else having this issue? or am I just lucky.

  • Can't view Camera RAW files in Bridge or Photoshop CS4 after upgrading to Mac Mavericks X OS.

After upgrading my Mac operating system to Mavericks X I can no longer view Camera RAW images on either Bridge or Photoshop CS4!
I'd already fixed the issue of not even being able to launch Photoshop by installing Apple's Java applet, but this doesn't seem to have helped with the Camera RAW situation.
I've tried invoking "Update" in both Bridge and Photoshop, and both indicate there are no updates.
I even went to Adobe's Camera RAW area, and downloaded and installed the Camera RAW plugin specifically for my cameras (Canon 5D Mk ii) and Photoshop CS4, and that hasn't helped at all!
I feel that it's just another silly Java applet, but I haven't any idea how to proceed from here!

  • Can't use CS4 to edit --Photoshop CS4 crashes after installing Aperture 3.1

Hello: Whenever I try to launch Photoshop CS4 as my external editor, it will crash while trying to open the image. I never had this problem before installing the Aperture 3.1. update. CS5 seems to be okay though.
Whenever I select an image in Aperture and select edit with Photoshop CS4, it will launch CS4 and then hang---never opening the image.
(I am using Photoshop CS4 for most of my work as many of my plug-ins have not been updated yet)

...my work as many of my plug-ins have not been updated yet...
Since I do not know what kind of plug-ins you are working with, if you tell us what are you working with the specific plug-ins. So I cannot tell you, but I do know that some other plug-ins software developers such as Nik Software and onOne Software recently updated their plug-ins from 32-bit to 64-bit plugins. However, I do not know what you are working with.
Also, when you are running Ps CS5, are you aware that you can switch back and forth between 32-bit and 64-bit workflow in Info panel. If you need to run 32-bit plugins in Ps CS5, you can always set it to 32-bit. When you are done working with that, you can set it back to 64-bit.

  • Moving images from LR 4 to Photoshop CS 6

I cannot move my images from lightroom 4 to photoshop cs5.Iam using a Nikon D600.Other images shot on other camers I can move.

The D600 is supported from Lightroom 4.3 and ACR 7.3 (which requires PS CS6). The ACR version in CS5 (the latest being 6.7) doesn't support it.
You can get around that using the free DNG converter, which will convert the files to the universal DNG format, readable by any ACR/Lr version. Other than that, see >this< thread.

  • [Help] lowering and moving pictures forward in photoshop cs4

hi, i dont know how to explain this problem very well but, i'd like to know how to move images up and down, and forward into the picture. here is a example. i got 2 images, one of a cat, one of a cat bed. and i want to move the cat, so it's lowered into the bed, and it doesnt just look like i've moved it. here is a example via a picture: see how the cubes are placed behind and lowered etc... i do know its a puzzle, but thats what im trying to explain, but not very well, and want to be able to acheive this using photoshop cs4 or any other program which allows this feature. thanks

It would take too long to spell out the steps but maybe this quick mockup will give you an idea.
3 Images  —  plain background; wall, and vehicle.
Drag the wall image, suitably distorted with the transform tool, into the background image.
Drag the vehicle image in and give it a drop shadow.
You now have three layers in one image.
Save it as a PSD or, for the web, as a flattened JPG.

  • *very* strange Photoshop CS4 troubles

    Hello,
I'm having 2 very odd problems with Photoshop CS4 I'm hoping someone here can shed some light on. I have been using PS since the early '90s and have never seen anything like these. I don't know if they are linked or if it's just coincidence. I have installed the most recent update (11.0.2) and the problems remain.
The first began about two weeks ago. Starting about 1/4th the screen width (1920) from the left to the left edge red becomes desaturated so at the left edge it appears orange. Very annoying. I use a Quadro FX 1800 video card connected to two Dell 2408 WFP displays via DisplayPort and I have the exact same problem on both displays. I have installed the newest hardware drivers, recalibrated my displays, etc., nothing fixes it. Today I saved a red swatch as a PNG and in both Picasa PhotoViewer and MS PictureViewer there is no shift in colour across either screen.
If I set the colour swatch in the tool palette to r=255,g=0,b=0 it appears orange if it's on the left side of the photoshop window. Move it to the right and it turns red. This is the kicker... If I leave it on the left and move the whole photoshop window to the right it turns red!!! perplexed.
Problem two is another mystery and it just started today. Frequently, and more so over the past week, I copy a colour channel from one image and past it into a channel of a newly created image. It's never made a difference if I was copying a colour channel to a greyscale channel, vice versa or colour to colour. It's always worked fine. Today however I can no longer copy a channel from one image and paste it to a channel in another with one exception. I can paste a colour channel to the alpha channel in a new image. Totally useless to me. Copying layers from one image to another is no problem.
I'm really stumped with these and though the first problem is a nuisance (when I look at a colour on the screen I also look at it's numbers so I'm already a skeptic)  the second is a show stopper. I would love to hear what people think of these.
    jt

    Interesting problem...
I'm assuming the orange looking window in Photoshop changes to red all at once when you move it, not gradually.
It sounds just as though a wide-gamut color profile is somehow being applied to just the left part of the screen, similar to what you might see if you had a small wide profile monitor on the left and another sRGB-like monitor on the right and the desktop spanning both.  Do your nVidia video drivers allow you to choose settings as though you have dual monitors?  Do they offer a monitor "identify" function, or the ability to configure "dual-link" DVI?  I believe that's the area in which you should look, and see if you can reset them to be configured for one monitor only.
Out of curiosity, what happens if you go into the Windows 7 Color Management dialog and uncheck the [ ] Use my settings for this device box entirely?  Do you find your color again becomes consistent when an image is moved from one location to the other on the screen?  Or is just the right side affected.
The Windows 7 image "Preview" viewer (e.g., right-click a .jpg image in Explorer and choose "Preview") is color-managed, by the way.  It will even apply a profile to part of its image (i.e., it'll do the right thing if dragged so that it is viewable on two differently calibrated monitors), so if I'm right about the system thinking you have two monitors in one, you may be able to see the exact vertical position where the profile change occurs.  It should also allow you to determine whether the problem is associated with Photoshop or on your system in general.
Consider this Windows Preview viewer run as noted above across the divide between an intentionally misconfigured monitor (with wide gamut profile) and a correctly configured one.  Look familiar?

in my project the timeline and/or the cursor move very jerky (in a continual chattery motion )  in windows 8.1
i have set the Windows Software Compatibility setting for their "Window 7 emulator"  and the condition still persists.
also the "fullscreen playback"  for the project used to  be very fine resolution and now it is very mushy...
all  this tells me there are real problem with my Premier Element 10

    Littlefeather
You are running Premiere Elements 10 on Windows 8.1 64 bit. The program works just fine in Windows 8.1 64 bit when run Windows 8.1.
So do not go altering to another operating system. I know this first hand.
The immediate factor that needs ruling in or out is your video card/graphics card. Specifically "Does your Windows 8.1 64 bit use
a NVIDIA GeForce card? If so, that may be your answer. See Announcement at the top of this forum which describe the Premiere
Elements 10 NVIDIA GeForce problem and gives the fix of how to roll back the card's driver version to get Premiere Elements 10
    to work for you.
Once we are assured that you are not afflicted by Premiere Elements 10 NVIDIA GeForce syndrome and also know that your current
video card/graphics card driver is up to date, then we can move on to seek other factors that may be causing the problem.
For your convenience, the following is a copy/paste of the Announcement about the issue as it appears at the top of this forum.
All the links and how tos that you will need are in this announcement.
Premiere Elements 10 NVIDIA Video Card Driver Roll Back
If you are a Premiere Elements 10 user whose Windows computer uses a NVIDIA GeForce video card and you are experiencing
Premiere Elements 10 display and/or unexplained program behavior, then your first line of troubleshooting needs to be rolling
back the video card driver version instead of assuring that it is up to date.
Since October 2013 to the present, there have been a growing number of reports about display and unexplained workflow glitches
specific to the Premiere Elements 10 user whose Windows computer has a NVIDIA GeForce video card. If this applies to you, then
the “user to user” remedy is to roll back the NVIDIA GeForce video card driver as far as is necessary to get rid of the problems. The
typical driver roll back has gone back as far as March – July 2013 in order to get a working Premiere Elements 10. Neither NVIDIA
nor Adobe has taken any corrective action in this regard to date, and none is expected moving forward.
Since October 2013, the following thread has tried to keep up with the Premiere Elements 10 NVIDIA reports

Older NVIDIA GeForce drivers can be found

  • Images Appear Different When Viewed in Photoshop CS4 vs. LR 2.7

Hello, I hope someone on this forum can help.
I have a series of high quality images that are catalogued using Lightroom 2.7.  Many were edited using Photoshop while others were edited in the "Develop" module of Lightroom.  All of the images look exceptional in both Lightroom and Brdige.  However, when I open some of the images in PS, either directly from Bridge or by using the "Edit in" command from Lightroom, they appear washed out and dull -- very different and much worse.  I always use the setting, "Edit a Copy with Lightroom Adjustments."  The problem pertains to all images regardless of file format (JPEG, DNG, NEF, etc.) and regardless of whether they are opened from LR, Bridge or directly from the image using the "Open with" command in Windows.
This happens on two completely different set of monitors.  At work I have a Dell 2208 WFPt UltraSharp monitor, and at home a dual monitor setup with an Asus VE278Q and an LG flat screen (all are flat screen, high quality monitors).  I have a Lenovo X201s with 8gb of RAM and a high-speed i7 processor running Windows 7, 64-bit.  All of my Adobe products are up-to-date.  Windows Color Management shows all displays as "Generic PnP Monitor - Intel HD Graphics," and the Advanced mode of Intel's HD Graphics correctly identifies each monitor being used.  The problem is identical regardless of which monitor is being used and it does not seem to make any difference as to which color profile is associated with the monitor (I have two profiles added -- Adobe RGB (1998) (the default) and sRGB IEC61966-2.1).
Specifically, if I double-click on a particular TIF image in Bridge (where the preview looks great), it then triggers Camera Raw 5.7 - TIF, where again the image looks terrific.  The settings applied by Camera Raw are "ProPhotoRGB; 16 bit; 3607 by 2420 (8.7MP); 300 ppi" (although changing these settings makes no difference whatever when the image is subsequently opened in Photoshop).  When the image is opened in Photoshop it looks terrible -- dull and washed out.  I encounter the exact same problem when using my dual monitor setup at home, so I don't think monitor calibrations are the cause.
Strangely, I don't think this problem existed a couple of months ago.  I've been busy on a project and haven't used Photoshop since the end of this past July (of 2011).  As I recall, this problem did not exist then, so I'm wondering if a setting in Photoshop inadvertently got altered since then.
I have the following key settings in Photoshop's "Color Settings":
Working Spaces: RGB -- ProPhoto RGB
Color Management Policies -- Preserve Embedded Profiles
    Conversion Options -- Adobe (ACE)
I have the following key settings in Lightroom's "Preferences / External Editing":
    Edit in Adobe Photoshop CS4
File Format -- PSD; Color Space ProPhoto RGB, 16-bits, 300 dpi
File Format -- TIFF; Color Space ProPhoto RGB, 16-bits, 300 dpi
I have tried and tried to figure this out, to no avail.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks, I think you're right.
Any suggestions for a cheap and easy way to calibrate my monitors?

  • Opening RAW images from CANON D7 in photoshop? bridge?

    Hi everyone,
First of all, i have no idea were to post my question so im very sorry if its in the wrong place....
I have just bought a new camera which im very stoked with! A Canon D7. Guess if i was surprised when i couldn't open my raw images in photoshop! I work in CS3 and i really need to be able to open the images in Brigde and then Photoshop. And not having to open them in Canons software first.....
So, is this possible or has this expensive camera made me disappointed?
    Very grateful for answers,
    Cheers Anna

I have a 7D too. Here's the thing. The 7D has been supported for weeks now, unofficially, in the Camera Raw 5.5 release. It was unofficial because they hadn't finished profiling it yet. Adobe has released an update, Camera Raw 5.6 beta, that you can download. But since it's still in beta, it is not available from the normal public site. You have to get it from Adobe Labs, here:
    http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/CameraRaw5.6
Unfortunately, I see that you're talking about Photoshop CS3. Adobe only puts out Camera Raw updates for the current version, CS4, so you won't be able to use Camera Raw 5.6 in CS3. What you want to do is go to the same link and instead, download the DNG Converter. Once you run your 7D images through the DNG Converter, they will be in DNG raw format, which Photoshop CS3 can read, and so can Aperture and OS X.
At least Adobe is telling us where they are going and how ready they are and letting us download something that can read the 7D raw files. Apple has had no update available of any kind, and no advance word at all.
Since you asked where you should have posted, there are a number of Photoshop forums out there and the are all aware of the situation. For example you could go to Adobe's forums, or many photography-related forums like dpreview.com. These Apple forums are more likely to know about Aperture and iPhoto.
