Moving an iMovie project

I have a 1hr movie created using iMovieHD 6.0.3 on a G4 iMac that has no superdrive, and thus, no iDVD.
I would like to author using iDVD on a separate workstation (quad core MacPro, running iDVD 6.0.3).
Moving the iMovie project file is not an option (15GB size). Is there any way to 'export/share to iDVD' on a separate computer?

Can the two computers be connected with a firewire cable? Of course they would need to be in the same place to do this.
I've done what you are trying to do (after transferring the file over an ethernet network). A problem was that there were associated files that were not transferred. These included music on iTunes that was used as background music. These had to then be separately imported into itunes on the second computer. Anyone have a suggestion as to how to prevent this problem?

  • Moving an iMovie project from one account to another

I started an iMovie project on my wife's login account but I want to move it to my own login account, including all of the clips and edits associated with the project.  Can I do that?

When the projects and events are in your wife's account, all those files have permissions assigned that allow her to edit them and no one else. It can be very tricky to alter these permissions and I do not recommend it.
However, there is a much simpler way. You can copy or move the projects and events to an external drive. From there, you can edit them directly, or you can copy or move them to your user account.
The reason this works is that external drives do not have permissions set like user accounts do.
To move or copy to an external drive, follow the instructions here.

  • Moving an iMovie project file for editing on a different iMac

Does anyone know if an iMovie project file started on one iMac can be saved to a usb drive or dvd/cd to be opened on another iMac computer to continue editing? What I have done before is go to: movies>iMovie projects>selected file and save the selected file to a usb drive. I also save the pictures and voice overs/music files that I used with the iMovie project on the same usb drive. However, when I open the iMovie project file on another iMac all of the work that I had previously done is not there. I end up starting all over. I would like to start my project at home and do any finishing touches on the second iMac in order to decrease the time I have to spend at the second location. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

When you move files to your second iMac, they need to be in the EXACT location. If you have your videos and photos in a folder on your desktop named "Movie Stuff," and you just throw them into a folder in documents called "Stuff" on your second iMac, iMovie will not recognize the files. You need to create the same path as the first iMac. In this case, you would have to make a folder called "Movie Stuff" on your second iMac's desktop, and move the files there.
    Hope this helped!

  • Moving an iMovie Project to an External HD

I want to move my iMovie project to a new external HD as I am running out of space on my internal drive.
I am currently working with two iMovie projects, one in DV format and one in MPEG4 format.
The MPEG4 format project opens and edits fine once transferred onto the external drive.
However the DV project does not. It opens, but will not play whatsoever. The audio track has the titles of the audio clips displayed on the timeline, which I have not seem before. When I try to play the whole movie or even a segment / clip, nothing happens and the cursor snaps back to the beginning of the movie.
The original version of the project on my internal HD still plays and edits fine.
Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing the problem?
    cheers
    David

I reformatted my external drive to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) when I bought it.
Good. Good to do on a new drive.
It's a 250GB WD My Book Premium using USB2 (as firewire taken by another portable).
Have you tried using FireWire instead of USB? That's the preferred method for iMovie. It may be that USB just isn't delivering the data fast enough for DV.
Just guessing here, but it's worth a try.

  • Moving completed iMovie projects to an external harddrive

I have imported some of our home videos to iMovie and edited them to consolidate. I now have a roughly 2 hour project that I would like to move to an external harddrive to free up space. I am also deleting the "events" (the converted home movies that I loaded onto iMovie to create the project). I chose to "export movie" in Share on iMovie and am saving on the external harddrive. I noticed on several other posts here that I could just drag and drop the project, is that true? If I do that, will it only be readable on this Mac that created the project? Ideally, I would like to burn a new dvd with this edited movie. Exporting Movie is taking 4-6 hours so wanted to make sure that was the right thing to do or if there might be a faster way to do this.

If it doesn't recognize the drag, then there is something else awry. You should be able to force a move instead of a copy by holding down the cmd key. Can you just plain copy?
If the destination does not become highlighted, the OS doesn't think it can accept the item for some reason.

  • Best way to export iMovie project for editing

I am creating an iMovie project in iMovie 09 with a friend. I have part of the movie and he has the other part (basically I have put together a lot of the video and some transitions, and he is going to put in some music he created and add a couple of other cool things). I have created my part of the movie and I would like to send the project to him so that he can add his part to finish the movie. I am not sure what the best method is to save my iMovie project so that I can sent it to him. I don't want to export it to something he can't work with on his end.
I am thinking that if I save the project as a QuickTime movie it will allow him to open open the file in iMovie and then he can add his stuff. I was also thinking about ways of exporting to mp4 format as I know this is a format that iMovie likes, and he could open this up in iMovie. I wasn't sure, though, how to make sure I save the movie project as a mp4.
Do you all have any thoughts or suggestions on this?
    Thanks,
    Tim

I don't think I have the answer, but if you don't mind I'm going to drop into your discussion because I have a similar issue and am interested in any solution someone may give you. I have a couple of iMovie project files because, like you, I have two people working seperately, and I just want to combine them as a single project.
I was able to move both projects to one computer by moving the iMovie projects to an external hard drive and then opening them both up from the same computer. That solution probably doesn't solve your issue, though.

  • Cant find my imovie projects

I created many imovie projects. and my computer was getting to full. So i realized they were saved in folder called imovie events. So i deleted imovie completely and kept the folder beacuse i bought a new computer. so now i open the imovie events folder on my new computer and i cant find any of the files.
Do you know where they went?

    Hi, Bai416.
I would recommend moving the iMovie project back into the project folder ~/Movies/iMovie Projects.  Once this is done it should be able to open as well as burn to DVD.

  • Edited iMovie Project has disappeared

I spent hours editing an iMovie project last night and now the project is no where to be found.
The project file is on one of the hard drives of my Mac Pro but the event is on an external hard drive (ejected properly after iMovie was closed properly).
Since I don't remember the name of the iMovie project, it could still be there in its original form before any of my edits because what I did was drop the footage into a project, edit partially and duplicate it before continuing. 2 duplicates of only the pre-duplication project appear.
Where the heck did my edited project go? Surely it was saved SOMEwhere because I undid and redid things along the way. It does not show up in a search for iMovie projects that I sort to list by date opened.
What happened? and how can I avoid this from ever happening again?
I would have had my completed project last night and none of this would matter if iMovie would have allowed me to share it last night, but instead when I tried, an error message appears claiming I needed more memory available to create the project. I had 4gb of available memory at the time (this glitch is listed in a seperate discussion thread. i am asking where my project went in this one).

If you have moved your iMovie project files out of the Movies/iMovie Projects folder, iMovie will not see them.
Similarly, if you have moved your iMovie Event folders out of the Movies/iMovie Events/ folder, iMovie will not see them. The solution is to move them back where they were. (And then restart iMovie)
If you want to move projects and events to an external drive to save space on your mac, you need to do it within iMovie. The instructions are as follows....

If you want to move projects and events to an external drive so you can edit them on another Mac, follow the instructions for consolidating media. http://help.apple.com/imovie/#mov3ac6c7c9

  • IMovie Projects not recognized

I recently backed up my computer on an external harddrive using time machine, wiped the computer, and started over.
Later, I opened iMovie and created two different projects. I exported one of them called "delete service" so I could email it to someone as a draft and didn't export the "insert service" project. Next time I went to open iMovie, the project I had exported was no longer there. I went into finder and BOTH files were there.... I tried clicking and dragging the file to get it to show up in iMovie, and it almost looked like it was opening, but it never showed up. When I went into my external harddrive and moved those iMovie projects to the folder, still nothing.
I deleted my prefences file, still nothing.

This happens in iMovie 10.0.2 too if that helps. I use 9.0.9 because in v10 Quicktime recordings are red.

  • My imovie seems to have completely crashed... and I'm hoping someone can help me. I have moved all my projects and events to a folder on my desktop. I've deleted all the plist files I can find and I still cannot get it to open.

Please help... it seems all is lost as all I kind find on this subject seem to lead to nowhere. My engagement was on imovie, a school project, several videos of our son. You will have to hold my hand through this process... as I am not very good at this type of thing. I believe I have deleted all the necessary plist files and moved my projects and events to a folder on my desktop. imovie has been upgraded to version 9.0.9... Whenever I open it I just get the beachball and then I have to force quit and I get the following report:

    Hi
Yes this can be many things - and I can only guess/suggest.
    A. a very common origin to make the Mac un-happy is to - PANIC-HALT - when the round multicolored thing appear.
So much can go wrong by doing this - and if done often problem builds up that can result in a real disaster.
    B. NEVER - move or alter any folder named - iMovie Event's resp. iMovie Project's - as iMovie has no search function - moving them results in that iMovie get's 100% lost.
One can move them - but this HAS TO BE done within the iMovie application (as it is up and running)
    C. preference files - there are TWO or more Libraries on Your Mac. First and easy to find is the one You see when opening Your Start-Up Hard Disk window = Root Library == the WRONG ONE
What we need to find is the one in Your User-Account folder (icon as a house) - and this is in Mac OS X.7, X.8 and X.9 HIDDEN. To see it do:
( It can be done like this: Open Terminal, then enter:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
Press return, then restart, and it will always be visible until the next major update, when you do the same thing again. )
    or - do like this.
On the Finder window at the top left of the screen,
Hold down the Option key and clicked on Go.
This allowed You to see the Library folder and select it.
Then keep the Option button pressed down in order to see and select the Library folder.
Once found it, You are able to navigate to the iMovie preferences file and move it to the trash.  iMovie then start’s up fine!
Now here in Your User Library - find Preferences and trash
    com.apple.iMovie.plist
    com.apple.iMovie3.plist
    com.apple.iMovie7.plist
    com.apple.iMovie8.plist
    com.apple.iMovie9.plist
    com.apple.iMovieApp.plist
    and find
    com.apple.iApps.plist
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this/these file/s out on to desk-top.
    Now restart iMovie.
I Prefere another way to find out if this is the problem.
(after all folders (iMovie Event/Projects are moved into original place)
    • go up to Apple Menu
    • Down to System Pref's
    • Select Accounts - Create a new User
    • Go down the Apple menu - Log OUT
    • Log into as the new User
    Now try iMovie
Does it work at all ? (Yes You don't see Events or Projects in Your original Account just now)
If so - Then we know that there is a corrupted pref file to be trashed.
Else - the problem are much more severe.
    D. After Panic Halt / Forced Quit - I always do -. to keep disasters on arms length.

    • Start from other HD or DVD - then run Repair Hard Disk (Apple Disk Util tool)

  • Unviewable iMovie projects after moving them to external hard drive

I moved my imovie 09 projects to an external hard drive using the finder window, did not move them in imovie and now they are unviewable in imovie. Is there any way will be able to view them again in imovie??? I thought maybe they needed to be in the internal hard drive for some reason, so I tried to move them back to "Movies" in my internal HD, but it didn't work either. I read in some other forums that they would not have their path links copied over if I did the moving in finder. Please tell me there's a way to recover my projects!

Well, you have a couple options. First shut down iTunes. Then unmount your HD. Then mount your external HD again, then after it pops up on your desktop, launch iTunes. Any files iTunes has that points to your ext. HD should play just fine.
Or, you can copy all your music to your ext. HD (if you don't already have it there), and simply delete your iTunes library (by removing your data files). You could then add to library, making sure you uncheck "copy itunes songs to music folder). This way, iTunes will only "point" to your ext. drive to play the music. If the drive isn't on, you don't get any music, and the "!" sign. If you have many playlists, this can be tricky.
As a rule, I don't go crazy with playlists, other than smart playlists. This way, you don't go nuts when you lose your data file, or want to do a clean update of your library. You'd be surprised at the times I thought I kept my library in tip-top shape, only to delete it and add the music again. I often find a song or two that I had hidden somewhere.

  • Moving Aperture libraries while keeping iMovie project video links intact.

I am in the process of moving my Aperture libraries off my internal drive to an external drive.  The problem I found is that by do so, my iMovie projects that were using video clips from the Aperture libraries now have broken source links.  I have all my video clips managd by Aperture, not referenced.
The way I moved the libraries was simply drap the library files to the new desitination.  I can see the original clips in iMovie's event library after the move and thumbnails are generated; but my project links are not updated.
My question is that is there a proper way doing this correctly so my iMovie project links are still intact after the move?  Thank you in advance for your helps.

I have exactly the same question as the OP. I've been into digital photography for a while, and have been using Aperture for a short time, but have JUST started to shoot some video for fun. Video goes into my Aperture library, but I'm just using iMovie to mess around with the video. I export short clips to YouTube for the family to view. Eventually, I'll put these projects on DVDs and I know I'll have to delete them from the Aperture library for space reasons.
How are people handling this? Should I just move the video directly to an external hard drive, for example?
    Thanks.

  • Moving I photo libraries without impacting IMovie projects

I Use IMovie to create slide shows. However no I want to move my IPhoto library to a new location. After doing this all pictures in IMovie projects were gone. Any Idea? is there a difference in the result between moving and copying?

What verion of iPhoto and system are you running?
Did you confirmed that the library working correctly and that the videos play as expected before deleting the library from your boot drive?
How is the external hard drive formatted?  It must be OS X Extended (journaled) with ownership set to be ignored:
Then point iMovie to the new iPhoto in its new location.

  • After renaming and moving to my desktop an iMovie project, i can not open it. I moved it back to iMovie but still it is not working. I noticed that there is not an Event Folder for the project. Can someone help me?

I renamed an iMovie project, then I moved it out of iMovie to my desktop. It did not work from there. Finally I managed to move it back to iMovie, but still does not work. I can't edit it, it does not even appear as an option. I found out that the Event Folder for this Project is gone. Is this the problem? Is there a way I can get it back? Can somenone help me?? Obviously after so many mistakes you can tell I am new on this. Any help will be appreciated it!!!!!

OK Let's take a step back.
If you imported video clips from a camcorder there would be an Events folder in the Movies/iMovie Events/ folder.
You have the option as you import from a camcorder to send your Event to an external drive instead. In this case, it would be in the iMovie Events folder at the top level of the external drive.
If your project has no video clips, but only photos, there may be no events folder, only links to iPhoto.
Similarly, if your camera imported your video clips to iPhoto, and you used the iPhoto event in iMovie, then your clips are in iPhoto, and there is no separate iMovie event.

  • Moving imovie projects to external hard drive

To save space on my hard drive, I moved all my imovie projects to an external hard drive and then deleted them on my laptop. When I tried to import them again, imovie did not recognize them - they were grayed out and not importable. What did I do wrong? Is it possible that I needed to move all the event clips together with the projects?
I need to figure out how to remove movie material to keep memory open, but am not clear how to do it. . . What do the experts do about this?

Let's assume you have raw MP4 clips in an event.
You start a project and select portions of the clips to be in the project. You add titles, music, etc.
Then you Share/Using QuickTime in MP4 format. At this point, the movie is rendered by using the Project file as a roadmap to go our and get the right clips from the Event files, add the titles, add the music etc. and produce a single MP4 movie that you can play.
You may get better results if you use a variant of MP4 called h.264.
You can also adjust the color of the movie using the video adjustments. Also, if your raw material is MP4, you should realize that this is a highly compressed format. You may get better results if you use a free app like MPEG Streamclip to convert the MP4 file into Apple Intermediate Codec, then import this into iMovie. Then you create your movie as always. Then you can share it as an MP$ (h.264).
The MP4 codec has one full frame for every 24 or so frames. The rest of the frames contain information about what has changed from the prior frame, so iMovie must resolve and compute what all the frames are as it is adding the titles, adding music etc at render time - then reconverting to mp4.
If you convert it to Apple Intermediate Codec, every frame is converted to a full frame.
If your source material is low resolution, editing in MP4 is fine. But is your source material is high definition, you will definitely get better results by converting to full frames before editing.
That probably isn't very clear, but come back with additional questions if you like.
