Moving and connection speed

I've moved recently and I'm only getting around about 2MB download via my homehub.
anyone else seen this issue?

hi yes that is quite possible your speed depends on the distance from the exchange you are so you may have moved further away from the exchange then you were before

  • 21CN upgrade and Connection Speed

    Hello everyone.
Just before christmas i noticed that the BT Wholesale site has changed from having a date for my exchange getting the 21CN upgrade completed and a speed of upto 17mb to the new speed being available now.
Prior to the upgrade i acheived about 7mb download speeds. The problem is even after the upgrade the speed had not changed.
Do i have to do anything to bet the speed increase or will it happen automatically?
How long after the upgrade is done does it usually take for the speed to change?
    My current settings are:
    Downstream 7616
    Upstream 448
    SNR 98 / 230
    Attenuation 180 / 90
    Thanks

Once an exchange is upgraded ADSL2 is rolled out to customers automatically in batches, and it could be a few days or several months before it reaches everyone. It might be possible jump the queue by agreeing a new minimum period contract otherwise it just a question of waiting. You should get an email from BT when it's due and when it's done, though I only got one after the event.

  • Broadband Dropping Out and Connection Speed Decrea...

Sorry to be a pain but I am back here again.
Since the last issue with speed, connection drop out and noisey line which required an underground cable to be partly replaced, all has been fantastic and no problem to report. Many thanks to those who were involved in helping with getting that issue resolved.
About 10 days ago the broadband started to drop out at random times but not too often. The broadband hub light would go out for about 15 seconds before returning. My connection would automatically resume and no great problem. It has since become more of a problem and pain.
The frequency of drop out increased with a sort of pattern. Last week an example would be drop out at 11:50 am, again at 12:40 and once more at 1:30 pm. Each time the connection returned my computer icon for wifi would be a warning triangle. I clicked on the icon and would get a message 'limited connection'. The only way I could connect again would be to click the icon and select to disconnect and then connect, making sure a 'tick' was in the box for autoconnection. A bit more of a pain than before but usable. It got more of a problem over the next few days.
The frequency of drop out increased. This became a right pain when trying to purchase things online as I could not be sure in the purchase had been completed or if I tried again would I get two lots? Upon broadband connection returning I would not be able to 'auto connect' but would get the warning triangle of 'limited connection'. I tried the click to disconnect and reconnect but it failed to work. I ended up shutting down the laptop, waiting before powering up. This failed to work as all I would get is the warning triangle and 'limited connection'. The only way I could reconnect was to press the 'restart' button. This worked but it got worse.
The next day the broadband connection would drop out every couple of hours. It got to the point that even pressing the 'restart' button would not allow me to connect. I tried three times and gave up. I had to resort to pressing the very small 'reset' button on the back. This cured the problem for about 12 hours before the drop outs started again.
It is now a case of 50/50 if I can connect to the broadband again after a drop out. It is getting quite frustrating. I only used the small 'reset' as a last resort. I have noticed that the speed of the connection has started to drop down also.
Each time the hub drops broadband and I can auto connect and do not press any hub button, the timer has reset to zero days and zero hours. I know it takes about a week for the connection to settle. I do wonder if these drop outs are messing the connection settings for my line speed? The line used to be rated at 21 Mbps but has decreased to 17 Mbps, my actual connection used to be 19 Mbps but struggles to reach 14 Mbps. It is slowly dropping with each and every drop out.
I also looked at the event log in the hub. Just before each broadband drop out I see a external connection is made with the initials 'CWMP' followed by 'event code 1 boot' or 'event code 6 connection request' or 'event code 4 value change'. Straight after the broadband connection drops out with out fail.
All I can seem to find out is that the external connection is either the hub connecting to the server or vice versa? As for the codes? I have no idea at all.
I only ever resort to pressing 'restart' if I cannot connect to my hub. I have only pressed the 'reset' as a last resort as nothing else worked to allow me to reconnect.
Can anyone offer any help or best a permanent fix?

I connected to the test socket and used a wired connection for the speed test and hub stats.
The hub position and run of cables are the same as when the last engineer advised as the best set up.
Since my last post I have checked the event log and 'CWMP' has made at least two remote connections but the hub did not drop broadband connection. The broadband has been stable but just slower than usual, as you stated due to the drop outs/disconnections.
I guess a case of wait and monitor to see if the problem has resolved itself?
Will the speed automatically return to the usual 18 to 19 Mbps? or will something else have to be done to reset it at the exchange/server?

  • Mavericks and Connection Speeds to Internet

    ttibsen
    Mar 22, 2014 12:45 PM
I have an old Airport Express.
I run my iMac on OS 10.9.2
All my devices - iMac, iPhone, iPad - run on WiFi.
My internet provider is via cable modem and I am supposed to get 15 Mbs.
Before switching to Mavericks, I enjoyed the full 15Mbs speed on my iMac.
Since Mavericks, the speed on the iMac is just a small fraction of the above and I have to wait 10 seconds for a page to load.
However the download speeds on the iPhone and iMac are as zippy as ever.
So I have to conclude that it might be the Mavericks OS that is somehow causing the problem.
    Has anyone else experienced this?
    Is there a remedy?
    Cheers
    John

    Hi,
It can be a number of factors.
In some areas that use Cable you may be on a particular "node" that is having issues.
Add to that the fact some ISPs slow the internet down when they suspect File Sharing activities are going on.
In the some cases it is speculated that ISPs can target a particular "node" when doing this.
Heavy File Sharing on such a Node would also slow your portion down as well.
Another Computer or Game Console doing a download or playing an On line game can also effect things.
Line of Sight WiFi and Satellite connections can have their own issues.
ADSL tend only to effected by general variances in the speed supplied by the provider.
This may depend on the "Contention rate"  at the exchange level (Access tends to be bundled together and could be anywhere between 20 and 40 end users. - Then it depends what those end Users are doing and some could be businesses)
A certain amount of the speed claimed to be supplied is given over to maintaining the connection.
When speeds of around 256kbps download were common for ADSL it could be as much as 10% of the download speed.
Obviously speeds have got much faster over those same wires.
At higher internet speed then the natural variances can be significantly high when looking at the actual speed lost.
As a percentage it tends to be about the same.
But 10% of a 40Mbps service is 4 Mbps in itself.
On top of that there can be a rash of Internet attacks on various servers around the world which increase the general amount of traffic on the internet and like a five lane highway this too will slow down.

  • Fed up with speed and connection issues since exch...

Last Monday BT done some upgrade work at our local exchange.  From that point onwards we have had speed and connection issues.
I use a Belkin G Router rather that the Homehub some that we can run a printer through it and that is plugged in to telephone socket via an extension.  But before we blame any of that we have gone back to the Homehub2 so we could see the difference and there is very little.
We live in the countrside so broadband speeds are not great in any case.  About 1.8 mg I guess but we have always had no problems.  It was good enough for us and we could watch Iplayer.
I was getting fed up with drop outs and speed and yestereday an Openreach guy came out tested everything could not find any problems apart from speed.  He made some calls and was told our band width had been capped.  He had that removed and yesterday evening speed was a bit better.
    Today just as bad again.

    Hi Welcome to the forums
Your high noise margin  will have a major impact  on your speed
If you post the full stats from your router
For homehub – type 192.168.1.254 into your browser
Navigate to ADSL Settings or use the A-Z at the top right of the home page and scroll down to ADSL Settings and click on it
Click on More Details and then post the full results.
also post the full results from http://speedtester.bt.com/
Have you tried connecting to the test socket at the rear of the master socket
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
also you could try the hints given by poster RogerB in this link they may help http://community.bt.com/t5/BB-in-Home/Poor-Broadband-speed/m-p/14217#M8397
Then someone here may be able to help and offer more advice.

  • Help : very slow connection speed with AEBS and iMac

I connect to the internet using my newly purchased AEBS. I have a MacBook and an 24" iMac ( purchased in Nov 2007). My iMac showed very slow connecting speed of <1 MB/s download; with my MacBook placed just 1 foot from my iMac, the MacBook showed an amazing download speed of 20MB/s. If i connect the iMac to the AEBS using ethernet cable, it can get a very high speed.
    So, where is the problem??
I am new to wireless, please help. I use iMac more than my MacBook at home.
Actually, i did not touch the any of the advance setting of the AEBS.

You know, I am experiencing the same problem. My wife's PC and iPhone are blazing fast, but my MacBook is accessing the internet at about dial-up speeds. Very frustrating and I haven't yet found the culprit.
    Anyone???

Could not find that setting anywhere.
It's in AirPort Utility, AirPort panel, Wireless tab.
When I'm within the range of the base station I connect normally, but further away the connection drops despite the fact that the other Airport is very close and light is green. Interestingly, my PB Pro has signal almost everywhere in the house, but my iPhone and Mac Mini don't. Most likely just a hardware difference?
In AirPort Utility with the second Express, in the AirPort panel, Wireless tab, have you checked "Allow wireless clients"?
The second AP does show an IP address: 10.0.1.3.
With a "Configure IPv4" setting of "Using DHCP", that suggests that the second Express really is connecting to the first Express. In that case I have no other explanation of your your problem.

  • Why is connection speed and page rendering so much slower in FF 3.6.13?

After installation of the 3.6.13 upgrade, website connection and page rendering speed became significantly slower than in all previous versions. I searched the knowledge base and Forum and found this post:
    http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/668695#answer-108852
After changing settings as described in the post, speed was easily more than doubled.
I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced the slowdown in connection and rendering speed with 3.6.13. And also why, if the settings worked so well for me, they aren;t standard in FF?

  • BB connection speed up and down, missing dialtone

For the past 3 weeks, I have had ADSL noise on the line and when the phone was picked up the ADSL connection would drop.
An engineer attended and "fixed" the fault.
After a few days following the supposed fix, the ADSL speeds subbenly drop from 11 Mb to 3 Mb, and when you check the phone, it is completely dead. I then switch off the ADSL modem, and after 10 minutes re-start, the ADSL connection comes back on at the higher speed of 11 Mb and the phone is alive again.
An engineer visit yesterday did not discover anything, but about 3 hours after his visit the ADSL connection speed went down and the phone line (voice) went off again.
I have another vengineer visit booked for Friday. Are there any pointers that I should be relaying to the engineer?

not really just simply explain what is happening
Have you tried connecting to the test socket at the rear of the master socket and see if the phone works there

  • Just moved and Time Capsule shows green light but does not connect to internet?

Help! I just moved and am trying to set up my wifi network unsuccessfully. I know the Internet is working as I can get online if I plug the computer directly into the modem via Ethernet cable. I've tried disconnecting and powering down everything, reconnecting modem and Time Capsule, then turning on modem, Time Capsule, then computer, with several minutes in between. Now I have a green light on the Time Capsule but in AirPort Utility it shows and amber light for Internet and says the connection is "Disconnected".
All my software is up to date. What do you think???

Modem.. what modem.. what kind of internet??
Open the utility and check the TC wan address??
If it is cable modem it can take 15min or more for the IP to reset.
Is the cable modem also a router??

  • View Theoretical and Real Connection Speeds

    Hi,
I hate to start off like this, but: In Windows, when connected to a network-either wireless or wired-in the lower right hand task bar a theoretical connection speed is displayed. For example, 54 Mbps or 1000 mbps (gigabit), etc... However, I find Apple just shows you are connected, which I prefer, but is there some place I can check the theoretical speed. For instance, sometimes I want to ensure my gigabit connection is correct, or that I am using wireless-n or g, etc...
Also, anyway to get an actual readout of the speed? Perhaps based on distance, interference, etc... and it could roughly estimate what the connection is at...
    Thank you,
    TM

Sorry Thomas and doogald for not giving you the "solved" credit. Thank you both for answering part answer of my question but I wanted to mark the "solved" area containing both answers.
    1) For actual internet and network stats: see Thomas's first post (with external link) and doogald's post.
    2) For theoretical connection stat: Open Network Utility -> select the "Network Interface (enX)" drop down menu to select which connection you want to see stats on. Each drop down is either your wired, wireless, etc... Then under "Link Speed" your theoretical will be displayed.
    Thank you all,
    TM

  • Connection speeds dropped and noisy line

    Hi there,
We will be calling BT tomorrow about this as we have had some crackling noise on our phone line over the past few days and the noise margin has shot up and the speed dropped, broadband connections keeps dropping randomly and sometimes the speed drops to 2mb instead of the usual 18-19mb I get.
When I plug the phone directly into the socket I hear no noise on the line at all, when I plug the phone into the ADSL adapter I still hear no noise, when I plug the router into the ADSL adapter I start to hear noise when the router starts to connect up.
Dont have a replacement adapter tonight to test this theory so thought I would throw it out there for experienced users to comment on.
    Thoughts?
As I said before my noise margin has went up quite a bit since this issue.

The noise margin will normally fluctuate but only very small amounts. You should find that noise margin is higher about lunchtime and as it get dark and more use the phoenline then noise margin starts to reduce and get lowest about 11/12pm and then the cycle starts again

  • Poor connection speed and intermittent drops with WRT160Nv2

In January 2009 I purchased a Linksys WRT160N v2.  At the time I did not have any wireless devices to connect to it other than a Nintendo Wii which has no problems.  In July I purchased a Dell Laptop with an Intel 5100 AGN wireless card and have since had trouble getting consistent speed on my wireless connection.
Around the first of November I upgraded the firmware on my router to v2.0.03 and installed the latest Intel 5100 driver available from Dell.
On November 3rd I participated in a web chat session with Linksys Support and was able to increase my connection speed to 121Mbps.  This was short-lived however.
On November 24th I sent an email similar to this post to both Linksys Support and Intel support and have not received a response back from either as of yet.
On 12/5/2009, after reading similar posts in the support forums, I followed some tips suggested by forum users:
    1) I hard reset the router by holding the reset button in for between 30 and 60 seconds.
    2) I hard power cycled the router by unplugging it for bewteen 30 and 60 seconds.
    3) I selected manual wireless configuration and assigned a unique SSID.
    4) I selected WPA2-Personal security and assigned a 9-character password.
    5) I set Radio Band Frequency to "Standard 20 MHz" and the channel to 11.
    6) Beacon Interval to 50
    7) Frag and RTS Thresholds to 2304.
    8) MTU to 1350.
    9) Power cycled the router and restored a few settings that were lost.
    10) Connected the laptop on wireless.
The laptop was in the same room as the router, about 10 feet away unobstructed.  There was full signal strength, but the connection speed would fluctuate between 43Mbps and 72Mbps.  There are no other devices besides the laptop connected on the wireless, and only 2 desktops on wired connections.
Detectable by my laptop are only 5 other WPA2 networks, 3 WEP, and 2 unsecured.  None of them are close enough to have signal strength of more than 3 bars.
We are giving our son a netbook for Christmas and I hope to have resolved all of these issues before then.
What other settings changes can be made to increase my connection speed over 100Mbps and stop the intermittent signal drops??
    Additional Details:
Laptop:  Dell Inspiron 1545 (A10 BIOS)
Operating System:  Windows 7 Home Premium x64
Router:  Linksys by Cisco WRT160Nv2 Firmware Version: v2.0.03
Wireless Card:  Intel WiFi Link AGN 5100
