Moving and consolidating libraries

My hard drive is full and I have placing my images in the Aperture Library. I have my vault on an external hard drive and have been downloading images to my external and refrencing them. I have a new external and would like to move my Aperture Library to the new drive, move the refrenced images from the smaller external into the Library on the newer hard drive. I'll still keep my vault on the other external; consolidating the images will give me more room.
How do I do this?
Thanks!

    all seemed to be ok.
when i checked the disc utility it did not show i has made any more free space than i had before.

    Did you empty Trash?

  • I moved my iPhoto libraries from one hard drive to another and have to manually locate the photos, every time!!!

I moved my iPhoto libraries from one hard drive to another and now every time I open a library I have to manually locate the photos. After locating the first file, it works well and remembers the location of the files of all the events, even when the folders containing the actual photos are in several different locations.
The problem is that when I close and open iPhoto, it does not remember where the files were and I have to locate at least a file, all over again.
Does anyone knows if there is a way of making iPhoto "remember" or saving the location of the files?

By default, iPhoto will store its library file under ~/Pictures. To select a library manually in iPhoto:
    Ensure that iPhoto is closed.
Hold down the Option key and click on the iPhoto icon in your Dock or launch it from the Applications folder.
    Click on Choose Library.
Locate and select the library you wish to use.
Close iPhoto and re-open it. Does it remember the library that you selected?
For more information on moving your iPhoto library, see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1229.
Hope that helps, have a great day.

  • Moving iphoto and imovie libraries to free up space

    Hi All,
I'm trying to free up hard drive space on my '09 MacBook Pro by moving my iphoto and imovie libraries - approx 110GB - to an external hard drive. I've done this successfully and emptied the trash but this has only freed up approx 25GB of space.
Is there something else I should be doing to free up the the whole 110GB? Any help is appreciated!
    PS. Using version 10.9.3

When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself.

  • HT201340 moving aperture and iphoto libraries

My aperture and iphoto libraries have consumed my little MacBook. What is the best method for moving all libraries to a different harddrive?

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto and/or Aperture
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library / Aperture Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library. Repeat form Aperture.
    4. Test the libraries and when you're sure all is well, trash the ones on your internal HD to free up space.

  • I have been storing my Aperture and IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive that recently died.  Fortunately I've been using Time Machine to back up to a 2nd external drive.  How do I restore my libraries to a new external hard drive?

I have been storing my Aperture and IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive that recently died.  Fortunately I've been using Time Machine to back up to a 2nd external drive.  How do I restore my libraries to a new external hard drive?

    This is a tricky one.
Open up Time Machine and go back to a date using the timeline on the right side of the window when you know the drive was working and was backing up as part of Time Machine backups.
Click on the name of your Mac under the Devices heading on the left side of the window in Time Machine, and if things are working correctly you will see Macintosh HD (or whatever you have named it) and the name of the external hard drive that was backing up in the past.
Right-Click on the name of the external hard drive and then click on "Restore (name of drive) to....."  You may be asked for your adminstrator password at this point.
It might be easier to restore the drive contents to your desktop if you have room on your Mac, and then copy things over to the new external drive where you want to store the Aperture and iMovie Libraries.
Once the libraries have been moved over the new external hard drive, you will likely need to "point" Aperture and iMovie to the location of the libraries on the new external hard drive.

  • What's the best way to merge, restore or reconstruct iPhoto and Aperture libraries to resolve images that are not found/offline?

    Hey there, Apple Support Communities.
To start, I'm working on a MBP Retina 15" with a 2.3GHz i7 processor and 16 GB of RAM.  10GB free on a 256GB SS HD.  Attached are two external HDs - one 1TB Western Digital portable drive from 2011, one 2TB Porsche LaCie non-portable drive from 2013; both connected via USB.  All photo libraries in question are on the external drives.
I have Aperture 3.5.1 and iPhoto 9.5.1.  I prefer to work in Aperture.
    The Issue(s)
Over the years, I have accumulated a number of iPhoto libraries and Aperture libraries.  At one point, I thought my WD drive was dying so I purchased the LaCie and copied all libraries over the the LaCie drive.  (Turns out, there's probably an issue with my USB port reading drives, because I can once again see the WD drive and occasionally I can't see the LaCie drive.)
So now I have old version of some libraries on the WD drive, and new versions on the LaCie drive.
When I was moving things, I ran the software Gemini to de-dupe my iPhoto libraries.  Not sure what effect that may have had on my issues.
In my main Aperture library and in some iPhoto libraries, I get the image-not-found badge or exclamation point.  I've dug through the hidden Masters folders in various libraries to find the original image.  In some cases, I have been able to find the original image, sometimes in a different version of the iPhoto library.
    My Question(s)
    1.  For Aperture libraries that have missing originals, is there some magical way to find them, or have they just disappeared into the oblivion?
    2.  For iPhoto libraries that have missing originals and I have found the original in another iPhoto library, what is the best way to proceed?
    3.  Are there quirks to merging iPhoto and Aperture libraries (by using the Import->Library) feature that I should be aware of?
TL;DR: Too many iPhoto and Aperture libraries, and not all the original pictures can be found by the libraries anymore, though some originals still do exist in other libraries.  Steps/process to fix?
Thank you!  Let me know if you need add'l info to offer advice.
    With appreciation,
    Christie

That will not be an easy task, Christie.
I am afraid, your cleaning session with Gemini may have actually removed originals. I have never used this duplicate finder tool, but other posters here reported problems. Gemini seems to replace duplicate original files in photo libraries by links, and this way, deleting images can cause the references for other images to break. And Aperture does not follow symbolic links - at least, I could never get it to find original files this way, when I experimented with this.
    1.  For Aperture libraries that have missing originals, is there some magical way to find them, or have they just disappeared into the oblivion?
You have to find the originals yourself. If you can find them or restore them from a backup, Aperture can reconnect them. The reconnect panel can show you, where the originals are supposed to be, so youcan see the filename and make a Spotlight search.
For iPhoto libraries that have missing originals and I have found the original in another iPhoto library, what is the best way to proceed?
Make a copy of the missing original you found in a folder outside the iPhoto library. You can either open the iPhoto library in Aperture and use "File > Locate Referenced file" to reconnect the originals, or simply reimport them. Then Lift&Stamp all adjustments and metadata to the reimported version.
See this manual page on how to reconnect originals:  Aperture 3 User Manual: Working with Referenced Images  (the paragraph:  Reconnecting Missing or Offline Referenced Images)
Are there quirks to merging iPhoto and Aperture libraries (by using the Import->Library) feature that I should be aware of?
References images will stay referenced, managed will remain managed. You need to unhide all hidden photos in iPhoto - this cannot be done in Aperture.
and not all the original pictures can be found by the libraries anymore, though some originals still do exist in other libraries.  Steps/process to fix?
That is probably due to Gemini's replacing duplicate originals by links, and your best cause of action is to fix this before merging the libraries. Reconnecting can be done for your iPhoto libraries in Aperture.

  • What is the best way to consolidate Aperture and iPhoto libraries onto an external drive? I am just starting out and not used to Aperture filing system.

I would like to use the drive as storage/aperture backup rather than use it to back up my whole Macbook.  Would like to keep the majority of the photo files on the ext. drive and be able to add files there directly.  BUT, when workng in aperture would like to be able to select some from the ext. drive and work them on the laptop directly without having to have the ext drive attached.
So do i, have the aperture library path mapped to the ext drive, and then import the iphoto library? and then how do i add additional from the camera?  Or, do i move everything together (imported iphotos and new from camera) in Aperture on the Macbook first, and then transfer that library to the ext drive?
For the life of me I can't figure out how to do this in a way that seems logical.  Vaults?  Masters on ext drive, versions on the macbook? Consolidating libraries? The endless possible answers are baffling me.
    Thanks for any help!

Hi Shane.  Not much in the way of thoughts - - but fwiw:
    How is the drive attached?
Can you open large files on the drive with other programs?
Are you running any drive compression or acceleration programs (some drives arrive with these installed)?
Can you reformat the drive and try again?
    Hi Kirby,
I attached the UltraMax Plus with a USB cable. The UltraMax powers the cable so power is not an issue. I can open other files. Also, there is 500GB of files on the drive so I cannot re-format it. Although, I noted I could import the entire Aperture Library. However, I do not want to create a duplicate on my machine because that would be defeating the purpose of the external drive.

  • If I move my itunes and photo libraries to an external drive, will they still be backed up via time machine (on another external drive)?

I have 2 external drives, one of which I would like to use to store my iphoto and itunes libraries (to create space on my laptop hard drive).  Then I have a 1tb drive that I'm going to use for my time machine backup.  Will I be able to back up the itunes and iphoto libraries from the external drive onto the time machine drive with the rest of the files that are on my laptop hard drive?  Thanks.

Depends on the version of the OS that you are using I would post on the forum for the version of the OS that you are using.
Later version od Time machine will, definitely. If the version you have doesn't, then there are plenty of 3rd party back up utilities that wll do the job for you.
If you're moving the iPhoto Library then remember the disk needs to be formatted  Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

  • Will all my playlists and songs be ok after I organized and consolidated library that was already on external hard drive

I am organizing and consolidating my library in the hopes of keeping all my playlists and libraries intact on myWestern Digital external hard drive.  My current computer, an HP Dv6 Pavillion running Windows 7 is going in for repair for the 2nd time.  When it came back to me to the first time, ITunes was still there unscathed.   I just don't want to take a chance.  If anyone has any ideas to help.
    Thanks
    Heather

When this happens (used to happen to me a LOT), iTunes will have a backup .itl file in the iTunes folder.  Delete the newly created .itl file, rename the backup to iTunes Library.it, and point iTunes to this existing library.  Everything should be back.
I'd guess you have a large library.  Mine started doing this when I got over 50k or so songs, and would happen as I was doing massive updates to the library.

  • Static linking of libpthread and librt libraries in Solaris 8 and 10

    Hi all,
We have created a solaris application which uses functions defined in libpthread (POSIX threads) and STL classes (string, list, map, vector etc.)
This application runs perfectly in our environment. However at other sites, there are crashes observed and debugging the core files indicate problems in generic places such as string.append() etc. We are not sure whether these problems are occurring due to dynamic linking of libraries.
Initially we had 1 problem due to libCstd and by following the procedure specified in http://forum.sun.com/thread.jspa?forumID=5&threadID=19287 , it was solved. I still find that the libraries including libCstd are dynamically linked to the application.
I would like to know the following
    1. Is there any way of statically linking pthread and rt libraries?
    2. If not, then is there any way to statically link all other libraries except for pthread and rt which can be linked dynamically?
    Thanks,
    Shekhar

You are posting in the C forum, but your question is about C++.
Not all runtime libraries are available as static libraries. Solaris is moving away from static libraries, and on Solaris 10, the main system libraries are available only as shared libraries.
Linking the C++ runtime libraries statically is generally a bad idea, although there are restricted application areas where it might be safe. If you build shared libraries as part of your application, or if you deploy on different kinds of machines or on different Solaris versions, you should link only to shared system libraries. Linking to static libraries can result in programs that will not work.

  • ITunes and Scrambled Libraries

I have two computers and one iPod hooked to iTunes. And none have correctly matching music and podcast libraries. What is the best fix?

    Hey hunter.jozwiak.1996,
Thanks for the question. The first step will be to consolidate all of your music on one computer. You can do this by transferring purchases from your iPod, as well as transferring selections of your iTunes Library from the second computer:
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848
Once consolidated onto one computer, use the first article above to transfer the entire library back to your secondary computer. If you want to maintain a running “sync” between the two computers, you may be interested in iTunes Match:

  • Data View Web Part - List of Subsites and Document Libraries under Current Site - Must be able to Package as Site Template in SPDesigner

    Hi Guys,
On the home page of each sub site I would like to be able to show a list of subsites and Document libraries that are under the current subsite.
I started investigating a solution using Datasources with SOAP requests sent to the server but it is very difficult to understand how to surface it on the Data View WebPart.
I have tried with the search results webpart but the problem is that it does not work well when packaged in a Site Template.
    Please advise.

    Ok,
    Here is the problem:
When creating a mysite from powershell or script, apparently you can ONLY do this from a wfe (or a server running Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Web Application in services on server).
You CANNOT create mysites from script on your appserver if it is not also a Web Application Server. I confirmed the same is true in my test farm. I guess I was always running most of these scripts on the webserver.
I searched all over and cannot find this documented anywhere.
Who do I contact to have Microsoft document this?
It's Thursday morning, I've been working non stop since Saturday morning so you don't have to :)

  • Development and consolidation same system

    Hello All,
Can i declare both the development and consolidation as the same system without specifying test and production system in a track? If yes then is there any other factors to be considered?
Also the SC state is in grey whereas if i click synchronize DC dependencies it turns green. Any suggestions on this?
    Regards,

    HI,
Can i declare both the development and consolidation as the same system without specifying test and production system in a track?
you can declare development and consolidation as the same system. but then you wont be able to distnguish between the changes you made.
keeping consolidation virtual is an good option than keeping development and consolidation as the same system.
and without specifying test system is not a good option, test system should have to be there, as at that stage only you assemble and check you development as a complete application.
