Moving and deleting pictures

I have 48 GB of photos on my iMac and would like to move all of them to my external firewire hard drive. I would actually like to have iPhoto then access the pictures from the external hard drive as well. What is the best procedure for this, and how can I reclaim some hard drive space?
Thanks,
Robin

Robin,
You can have iPhoto use the library from an external drive. Close iPhoto. Use the Finder to copy the entire iPhoto Library Folder (all in one piece) to the external drive. When complete, hold the Option key as you launch iPhoto and click "Choose Library." Navigate to the iPhoto Library folder on the external drive, then click Open. iPhoto will continue to use the library from there until you option-launch again and tell it otherwise. When you are absolutely certain that all is well with your library you can delete the iPhoto Library folder on your internal drive to free up the space.
Regards.

  • Can i use icloud as storage and delete pictures from macbook?

My macbook is currently full. I would like to know if i can move all photos/videos to icloud then delete them from macbook. My fear is the backup would run and realize they were not on the macbook then delete them from the cloud.

I would like to know if i can move all photos/videos to icloud then delete them from macbook
You cannot save space on your Mac by moving documents and photos to iCloud, because iCloud Drive will create shadow copies of every file it stores on your Mac. iCloud Drive is meant to keep all your documents updated on all devices.  (see this link:  iCloud Drive FAQ)  Using iCloud Drive you will need as much space as before, the advantage is that the drive will look the same on all your devices.  To save storage on your Mac get yourself an external drive and move  your photos to that drive. And make sure your new drive will be included in your Time Machine backup.
Before you delete any files from your Mac, make sure, that you have at least one working backup and can read the moved files on the new drive.

  • Organizing my Library and Deleting Pictures

In my library I made duplicates of all my pictures for editing and now I need more space on my hard-drive for movies so I want to delete my original photos and leave the edited versions. I put all my originals in a folder and saved them to disks, I want to know if there is a more efficient way to delete the originals off my library without tediously going through again and selecting every other picture?
    Thanks, MrRaggy

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
In my library I made duplicates of all my pictures for editing
This is not necessary as iPhoto retains your original at all times. So now you've got your Original, your Original Copy and your Modified versions. Not duplicating before editing will save you 1/3 of the disk space.
I want to know if there is a more efficient way to delete the originals off my library without tediously going through again and selecting every other picture?
    Try using Duplicate Annihilator

  • How can i remove moved and deleted old libraries?

I've moved a bunch of my libraries around, removed some, and have installed iphoto9 on a new mac. I love that in iphoto9 I can now create new libraries or decide which library to open. But, all of my older libraries are showing up in the list when I open with "option". Plus there are duplicates of the older libraries. I'm assuming there is a db or data text file somewhere that is populating this list. Does anyone know how I can remove old defunct libraries from showing up in the list?
    Thanks,
    Bob

Thanks Terrence. I didn't even realize all these old files still had album xml files. I appreciate your help.

  • Outlook 2011 on MAC Sent Items folders not syncing when items are moved and deleted

Emails in the in the inbox can be moved to different folders and they will update (disappear from the inbox) on the Macbook with Outlook 2011 . the Windows PC outlook 2010, Iphone and OWA update accordingly. Sent Items that are moved on the Macbook are only
moved in the Macbook. The rest of the machines still have the email in the sent items folder and the "moved" email in the folder it was moved to.
Redid the identity and its a new install. What is next? Sent items are changed on the Macbook more often and the changes need to propagate across all the devices.

    Hi,
Do you have Cached mode enabled in Windows PC Outlook 2010? If so, please turn if off to see the result. To do this, open Outlook 2010, click File > Account Settings > Account Settings, double click your Exchange account, then clear the
Use Cached Exchange Mode check box.
Since this issue may also related to Outlook 2011, you can also post in the Outlook for Mac forum to see if there is any good suggestion:

  • Trimming the fat - moving and deleting files to save space.

I have a bit of a dilemma. I have a large number of applications that require to be installed on my startup disk. Thanks to large audio libraries and plugins, it just about fills it up.
I was fortunate enough to have put in a second internal HD (props to ME and their optibay) so I was able to move things like the audio content of my iTunes library over to that drive, my Aperture library, and a few game like WoW over there, savings tons of space. However, after a disaster corrupting my drive, I had to wipe and reinstall the OS and al of the software from scratch. I had about 2GB of space left. Here are some areas I think can be moved or "trimmed:"
    • Printers. I've dumped all of the printer drivers I'll never use, freeing up 3.5GB worth of space. It's a good start.
    • When reinstalling my audio apps, I started with Logic Pro 7, then all of the Jam Packs I had, and the Logic Pro 8. It looked like 8 came with all of the Jam Packs already had plus another one or two I didn't. Did it write over, or skips the already-installed instruments, or did it create multiples stored in slight different locations. This has the potential of shaking out a few more GBs.
    • Loops. The Jam Packs and Logic Pro 8 came with a bunch. I know I had most of them uninstalled previously, but opted to add them in this time around for some current projects. Is it possible to relocate them to the second internal drive without too many headaches for Logic and Soundtrack to find them?
    • iWeb creates its on hierarchy of copied media for working with my website. Is it possible to relocate this library as you would in iTunes and Aperture and just point the app to it at startup? The hold-down-option-key-at-launch method doesn't seem to prompt anything as it usually would...
    • iWork '09 Trial. I've tried it, decided I like parts, but don't want to bother with it until I need some of the new presentation features. The compressed disk image download itself was fairly sizable, so I know this would clear up some more space. The problem is, I don't see an uninstaller anywhere, and its files are located in different places in the system libraries. Does anyone know of an uninstaller I missed? How about a list of all of the iWork '09 file locations?
Apple's make it "just work" mantra of software is useful, but a big disk-space hog. Things from printers we'll never use to old software that you've got the old versions still hanging around cough iWor- cough iLi- cough just don't work for power-users who use their machine as the swiss-army knife of media tools.
Also, should I be looking defragment my disk after all of these measures are taken? I'd do it for a windows machine, but i don't know enough about AFS to choose how to or even whether or not I should.
A tool like Cocktail would help clear some of the space taken over by logs and caches, but I believe that is what corrupted my disk in the first place. Please, oh thou knowledgeable forum dredgers, help me! You're my only hope...

By moving the soundtrack and logic pro loop libraries to my second internal HD, I've been able to leave an alias on the original HD pointing to them on the second drive and the applications seem to have no problem using them.

  • IPhoto and deleting pictures

i delete pics form iPhoto and they keep coming back again... help as I'm duplicating my efforts on back up ...

Deleting Photos from an iPhoto Library
1 - from an Event or the Photos mode: select the photo(s) and use the Delete key to move the photos to the trash bin. Then empty the iPhoto Trash bin as follows:
2 - from an album, smart album, book, slideshow, card, etc.: select the photo(s) and use the key combination of Command+Option+Delete to move the photos to the trash bin.  Then empty the trash bin as above.
Note:  The last 12 month album is a smart album.
NOTE: deleting a photo from an album, slideshow, book, etc., with only the Delete key only deletes that photo from that item. Deleting a photo from an Event deletes ALL occurences of that photo in the library.

  • Organizing and deleting a repeated import...

    Hey all,
Does iPhoto '09 find and delete pictures that have been imported more than once?
    Thanks

    How did you do this?
Did you import one iPhoto library into another (never do this)? If you did and still have the original library you can just start over by copying the library and opening it - iPhoto will upgrade as needed

I have tried selecting photos and videos to throw them in trash bin, but the trash bin doesn't work when pressing and or clicking on it

    Thank you so much,

How did you transfer the photos from your other iPhone? If you did it by importing them from the old phone to a computer and then used iTunes to sync them back to the new phone, then you would delete them by syncing again using iTunes but this time change the selection of which photos are to be synced. Each time you sync using iTunes, it sets the non-Camera Roll photos on the phone to match the current settings/selection in iTunes.

  • I trying to use organizer, and deleted folder showing up again, sometimes in double, and pictures show

    I tryinfg
to use organizer: deleting my old files, and saving others for  a folder called PICTURES.
Deleted fiels showing up again, sometimes in dobel.
Some saved picture show with a "?" mark in  the upper right corner. With these i can not work again. Can not be found, and not in the Finder.
    Plese help,
    Thank you very much.

The quote is meant as a humorous tag line - a deliberate paradox (or maybe false dichotomy). I don't recall where I first came across it but have been using it since around 1992. I later found it was written by American author and humourist Sam Levenson - http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/s/sam_levenson.html.
For your Organizer problem, have you ONLY used the Organizer to move the files around or did you use the Finder as well?
If you moved or deleted with the finder this would explain the '?' you see in the images. The Organizer keeps track of where they are for itself and if you use the Finder to move or delete things the Organizer is not 'aware' of that fact.
Now if you want to remove all these '?' items from your catalog, you can use Find> All Missing Files. When it has done its thing the Organizer will show all those images where the links are no longer valid. You can use Edit> Select All to select them all and press Delete. answer 'No' to the question about deleting from hard disk.
If instead you want the Organizer to try and recreate the connections use File> Reconnect> All Missing Files. This can take a long time if there are lots missing.
Once you have the '?' items sorted out you can use Find> By Visual Searches> Duplicate photos. When it has done it's thing it will show what it thinks might be duplicates and you can choose to Delete those you don't want. In this case you probably do want to delete the duplicates from the hard disk.

  • Why can't I delete pictures off of camera roll. I also can't send a picture to a friends phone. One last question.......why do pictures freeze up on the screen and I have to hit the power button to go back to home screen. Thanks for any help.

Why can't I delete pictures off of camera roll?  I also can't send Pictures to someone else's phone. My picture seems to freeze up and I can't do anything, particularly delete the picture. I'm new to iPhone so I'm really just learning how this iphone thing works :)

Did you recently start using iCloud to backup your photos?
Wife had the same problem today.  Remembering that I had recently signed her up for more space on iCloud and started backing up her photos, I decided to roll the dice and turn that off.  Plug phone back into computer and *boom* I now have the option to delete.  Now I just have to figure out how I can do both = \

  • I have deleted hundreds of pictures, I've deleted apps, deleted emails and texts, and I've turned off and deleted backups of apps on icloud and it is still telling me that there is not enough icloud storage available for my phone to be back

I have deleted hundreds of pictures, I've deleted apps, deleted emails and texts, and I've turned off and deleted backups of apps on icloud and it is still telling me that there is not enough icloud storage available for my phone to be backed up. I am supposed to do this before I go to the Apple store today to get my phone fixed. Can someone please help me? I have done almost everything.

This article explains ways to reduce your iCloud storage: Managing your iCloud storage.  In addition to what's mentioned in the article, if you have lots of photos and videos attached to your text messages, these are all included in your iCloud backup and deleting them can sometimes significantly reduce the size of your backup.
If worse comes to worse, back up your phone to your computer rather than iCloud.  To do this, connect it to your computer, open iTunes and go to File>Devices>Back Up and to File>Devices>Transfer Purchases.  This can be used to restore your data when you get your phone back.  (In fact, it's faster because you don't have to download the data from iCloud.)
