Moving and Managing Photos

My situation is this.  My lightroom catalogue has multiple naming conventions for the folders.  I've only been on lightroom for a few months and have created a naming convention of yyyy-mm-dd when i import photos.  So in order to get my existing photos in that convention (they had already been imported into the lightroom catalogue) i removed them from the catalogue and reimported them.  This allowed me to have lightroom automatically create new folders by date.  Also several folders had duplicated because before had created multiple folder categories (of course now i don't need that cause i can create smart folders).  However, now I have some pictures that are duplicates but i have already tagged them so i don't want to remove them from the catalogue and loose all the metadata work i have done (these pictures were shot in JPEG).  Is there a way to have lightroom move them to new folders that is automatically creates by date as it does in import?  Any help is much appreciated!!
Brian

Thanks both dj and McPhotoman.  I agree with you that the metadata is where to spend the time.  Since I didn't know much about that when I started taking pictures and already had 10K when i got lightroom the one area where having photos in folders helps is applying the metadata to a group of photos.  So actually I have been going through the photos and tagging them.  In fact i have them all tagged now (at least in major catagories).  I am willing to leave my old concept of the folder system behind, so what is your recomendation for storing photos.  I am not a professional, so my photo are trips that i take or events i go to.  Are you suggesting all of my photos in one folder and just tagging them as i import?  How do you store your photos?  Again thanks for your help?  Also, I do have them all in date folders now.  Is it worth undoing that since when i import my photos a new folder is created?

  • Ipad and managing photos

I am really trying to like the apple system for managing and editing photos but every time I try to use iphoto, itunes and photos on the ipad to do something relaitvely simple, I hit a brick wall. Searching various discussion groups often give hope but more often shows many, many ,many people are having the same frsutrations as I am. Does apple have the slightest concern about the actual requirements of its user base?
I am using an ipad 1 (5.1.1) and a macbook pro (snow leopard). On the ipad, I have laoded soem photos from a camera sd card and arranged them into albums.
What I want to do is to import them into iphoto on the MBP and add captions (using Preview as an external editor) and then put them back into the same albums (replacing the original photos) on the ipad. This sort of thing can be done quickly, easily and almost without thinking on a pc.
When I load the photos form the ipad into iphoto, it splatters them who knows where and loses all album structure.
(As a side problem, once the download to iphoto has been done and I eject my ipad, I cannot reconnect my ipad to the MBP without rebooting the MBP  - only apple knows why).
When I compare the photos shown as imported from my ipad in iphoto with the photos shown  in the "All Imported" album on the ipad, both lists contain 160 photos but some are different. Why?
I want to be able to order my photos on my ipad so that they appear in reverse data order. I can't do this basic simple thing. Why not?
Are there any apple afficionados out there who can set me straight and show me that apple is flexible enough to do what I want, or is it the case of do it apple's way or not at all?
PS please don't suggest updating to later versions of the OS as from other discussions, the problems I have a certainly not solved by later versions and are probably exacerbated by them.

When you delete a photo from the camera roll it is deleted from any albums that contain it.  This is because the albums don't contain actual photos; they only contain links to the photo in the camera roll.  When the cameral roll photo is deleted, the link to it is removed form any albums as well.
Also, photos only remain in my photo stream for 30 days, and if you delete a photo stream photo from your device it is also deleted from iCoud and all other devices.
Photos added to a shared stream will remain in iCloud indefinitely, the will be at a lower resolution than the original.  And the shared stream album will also remain on your phone.
For all these reasons, you can really use iCloud to archive your photos and free up space on your device.  Instead, import them to your computer while they are still in the camera roll, as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083.  If you want to be able to still view them, get a Flikr account (or similar) so you can view them as a gallery from the web.

  • Moving  and splitting photos - catalog questions

Until recently, all my photos were On one disc with one Lightroom catalog. Now there are too many photos for a single disc, so I split them into two discs and created a new catalog to deal with the two different locations. Of course, I immediately lost all of my light room edits. I have plenty of backups, so nothing was truly lost now the question:
How do I keep one Lightroom catalog while splitting the photos into two drives, AND keep all my edits, virtual copies, etc?
Right now, the restored catalog contains all the edits, but half the photos aren't where the catalog expects them to be. What is the easiest and safest way to do this?
Running Lightroom CC, windows 7/64, all software up-to-date.
    Thanks,
    EdB

A single Lightroom catalog can support photos stored on multiple disks, even offline photos. If you want to move photos from one disk to another you can do the moves within Lightroom. If you choose to do the move in the OS then you can relink the photos. In short, it can all be done with a single catalog.

  • Moving and editing photos on 2 computers

I have an iMac and my husband has a MacBookPro. All photos end up (vie photostream/icloud) in the iPhoto on the iMac. However, I want to be able to use his laptop to edit photos (delete as well as tag and edit) while lounging on the couch but I want all edits to be saved on the iMac. Is this possible? I am confused by the prior posts on similar issues. We currently do home sharing if that matters,

No it's not possible, except by using screen sharing, and that's extremely slow.

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

  • Photos- best way to locate and manage (Help!)

I moved to a Mac Pro with the idea that it would be a great computer and help me manage my tens of thousands of photos.  I tried to import my photos from an external drive and it failed multiple times.  I started using iPhoto and Picasa to manage new photos taken but when I went to send some to my family I couldn't find the ones I imported into iPhoto.  After a lot of trouble I realized iPhoto hides the files from you. So I think I exported them all and then I think maybe I found them and moved them to my master repository but then I found thousands of files in the trashcan that I couldn't locate either on my MAC or my external drive. I have no idea what is going on but I'm now very concerned that I've lost photos. I really resent iPhotos heavy handedness in photo management and thus don't want to move to it anymore- I might go back to a PC after this laptop because i can't find files in general and I think the learning curve is too great for me.  So my questions are:
    1. What is the best way to manage photos in the interim, while I still have a  MAC but the bulk of my photos are on an external drive?  Will the MAC let me save future pix directly to the external drive? Or should I do all photos through a PC
    2. Is there any way to expose the iPhoto files in finder?
    3. Has anyone use Picasa with success on a MAC? Am I right in thinking it only stores local photos if you edit them in Picasa? I am having a lot of trouble FINDING photos in Picasa- esp ones imported from my iPhone. It's nice that the mac imports "new" iPhone photos but I can't find them again so that is not so nice.
    4. Is there a duplicate detector people recommend? I have made a royal mess of my external hard drive of data as well as this MAC trying to import, find and recover pictures and data.
I am extremely frustrated and i would appreciate any help.  I don't have a ton of time since I work full time and have three kids and I basically have done no photo sharing or editing in the 6 months I have had a mac because it's too confusing.
    Amy

That's exactly the sort of crafty workaround I like. I didn't know they were all tagged, but that would definitely work. I'd still love a dedicated app that did it really well, or more love given to that side of things in iPhoto. iMovie is too hefty for just managing them.
Is iPhoto properly built to handle management of iPhone video, by the way? I didn't want to use it because it didn't seem like it was, and also because I sync my iPhoto library with Dropbox and video would more than treble the size of the library so I manage it from the Finder mostly, importing clips to iMovie if I do want to edit something (rarely).

  • Photostream management: avoiding multiple directories and keeping photos

    Hi
Sorry in advance for a stupid question but I can't find any way of moving forward.
We take a lot of pictures with our iDevices and we are happy to see it automaticaly on our iMac (Aperture).
But, Aperture creates one directory per month (Photostream Jan 2013, Feb 2013...) and we like to manage our photos by themas so we drag and drop photos from photostream monthly directories to our own directories.
Once  all photos from a month have been copied into the right directories, we would like to remove photostream dir in order to avoid 12 new dir per year.
We don't care if photos are removed from photostream on our devices but if we remove the Monthly dir, then photos are deleted from Aperture librabry :-(
Not sure to be crystal clear with my explanation.
If someone can help it will be great.
    Thanks in advance.
    P.

You need to drag the images from the Photstream  or the Photostream Jan 2013 project to another project of your choosing.
Once the images are moved and placed into a new project you can delete the Photostream Jan 2013 project.
Remember all images need to be in a project and in only one project. Not sure where you are dragging them to given you're use of the term 'directories'  in your post but if the images are deleted from Aperture when you delete the Photostream Jan 2013 projectt then you did not move the images to another project.
    regards

  • TS3989 My photos on my iPhone 4 are on my camera roll and in my photo stream, but my recent photos have not moved to my photo stream folder on my computer (windows 7).  What can I do?

My photos on my iPhone 4 are on my camera roll and in my photo stream, but my recent photos have not moved to my photo stream folder on my computer (windows 7).  What can I do?

At 1.3GB available, your storage space is getting very thin no matter what you do further.  As long as you have the photo's in the camera roll saved on your computer you can delete them.  Just make sure first that they are in your photo software.  If updating in iTunes, just backup/sync first, then update, and that will save the camera roll in the backup as well.
At only 1.3GB you eventually are going to find yourself unable to install or update some app, or unable to take any new pictures, or some other limitation that will force you to free up space anyway.  So now, before updating, sounds like a good time to make sure everything is backed up or stored somewhere else, and clean house a bit, then update.

1 - without specifics I have no idea how to help
2 - the question was "are you trying to use them in iPhoto? " - it sounds like you are - to do so you will have to export them from Aperature and import into iPhoto
3 - for information on how to use them in Aperature then you need to ask about how to use Aperature in the Aperature forum as it does not involve iPhoto

  • Managing Photos in iPhoto and Folders

So I am embarrassed. I have been deleting photos in iPhoto and ASSuming they are deleted in their 'home' folder - nope. Is there any way to force iPhoto to be a file manager and any photos that are not in the app are deleted? For the future, is there a method of deleting the photo in iPhoto that will also delete it off the computer?
    Thanks!

    No
iPhoto is a database and manages the photos in its library - deleting photos and emptying the iPhoto trash will totally delete the photo from the iPhoto library
iPhoto will not do anything with any photos outside the iPhoto library - either un-imported or imported to iPhoto using a referenced library (which is not recommended for many reasons)

You may need to prepare yourself for a "World of Hurt" from your wife...
Since the average 0.9 megapixel JPEG photo file of normal graphic complexity stored at a high quality compression setting is 125-135 KBs in size, I would have to assume any QT video files you created of more than a fraction of a second in duration were most likely saved as "reference" files to only be 50-150 KBs. Basically, a reference file is q QT (MOV) file that tells a video player how to play data that is still stored in its original source file container(s). For instance, you could trim and merge a number of files together and save the result as a "reference" file that takes up very little room on your hard drive. Or, you could post fles to a server and create a "reference" file that is small enough to be sent as an email attachment that plays the uploaded data on someone else's computer as long as they are connected to the Internet. Unfortunately, for these reference files to work, all of the resources referenced within the file must continue to exist in their proper locations in order to be found and played by the reference. Since you did not indicate what "but they won't play" really means here or how you actually "moved" your iPhoto library files to the external drive, I can only make some "educated guesses" at this point. (BTW: for future reference, iPhoto has a built-in function that allows you to copy your library to one or more back-up locations and then connect to them by default when iPhoto opens or switch source libraries at will within the opened application.)
If you created reference files and saved them to an external drive, you should be getting an error message telling you the app needs to know where the source files are located so the reference file can re-connect to the resource data. If the original files were also saved, then simple navigate to the source files in oder to tell the app where they are now located. If the source files were deleted as part of the reformatting process, then you are up the proverbial creek whithout a paddle with little or no hope of doing anything about this issue. (I.e., reformatting and then re-installing a system drive usually means you would have little hope of recovering the specific "lost" data you want as there is always a good chance that some of the data segments were overwritten during the process.)

  • Managing Photos and others without the use of iTunes

Hello everyone, is there any software out there that would allow me to manage photos, music, wallpaper, themes, ect. other than iTunes, then of course I can not manage any themes with iTunes anyways. But if someone can point me in the right direction I would be very gratefull.
Thanks everyone, and all the best

No iTunes is your only choice.

  • I am confused about how to manage photos between my iPhone, iMac and iPad.  How do I avoid using all the storage pace on my various devices?

How do I manage photos between my ipad, iphone and imac without using all the storage on the various devices?

If enabled, iCloud Photo Stream ensures all new photos are sent to all your devices. Then you can simply add the ones you want to each one's Library, and delete any photos you don't want.
One technique is to designate one device as the "master" containing all your photos - probably your iMac, since it is likely to have the greatest available storage - and make sure you have a backup strategy for it. That way, any photos you choose to keep on your iPad and iPhone are redundant copies that can be deleted as you wish, or as required should you need to restore your iOS device. If your iMac breaks and its Library irretrievably lost, the importance of its backup becomes critical. Therefore, consider having more than one backup, and more than one geographical location for them.
