Moving Aperture project/folder

I am about to erase and restore my Macbook because it is running incredibly slow and Apple Store has suggested I do an erase and restore. I am also on 10.5.8 and have just purchased Snow Leopard 10.6 so need to upgrade to this without losing all my data.
Can anyone advise how best to save all my necessary files incl the folders/projects I have created in Aperture?
If you know of any other important files necessary to save before doing the erase and restore I'd appreciate it.
Thanks,
Ian

Sorry -- shouldn't have capitalized "names" in my earlier post.
I use several Libraries.  Whenever I switch Libraries, the first time I show the Control Bar Button Sets, I see no Button Sets.  When I click "Edit Buttons ...", a drop-down pops up ( ) with what I assume are the default Aperture Button Sets:  Wedding, Sports, Animals.  I have to click "Edit Buttons ..." -- this time at the bottom of the drop-down list -- and then click "OK" in the dialog, in order to get my Button Sets to show on the Control Bar.
I didn't mean to indicate the existence of a set named "Names".  I should have specified the Button Sets named "Wedding", "Sports", and "Animals".
Now that I think of it, those names might be from the Aperture 3 APTS book.
(Added:  Nope, not from the APTS book.  The Button Set one creates in the tutorial is "Portraits".  And the default Button Sets did not include (judging from a screen-shot shown in the book) "Sports" or "Animals".  Hmm.)

  • Impact of moving movie project folder to external hard drive

I am trying to free up hard drive space, and want to move my competed imovie project folders to an external hard drive.
I want to still be able to watch the movies on Apple TV, iTunes (via iPods) and Front Row.
I created mv4 files and QuickTime files to view on Apple TV, iTunes (via iPods) and Front Row.
So, my dumb question is (and the answer may be obvious): Does removing the imovie project folder for completed projects, which are quite large (5 o r 6GB) have an impact on my ability to watch the movies in the above formats?
One more piece of information is that I do not keep my external hard drive connected permanently as it is more of a backup drive. Also, if want to edit the project, I would simply edit it from the external hard drive.
    Thanks in advance.
    Russell

Before anything else, make sure that the external drive is formatted a 'Mac OS Extended', otherwise it'll be incompatible with editing your movies.
(..To check how it's formatted, Ctrl-click on its icon, and choose 'Get Info' ..to reformat it - if necessary - use Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility. BEWARE: reformatting a disc deletes everything that's already on it!..)

  • Project folder name in NetBeans interfering with JSF/GlassFish deployment

I am not sure if this is a JSF issue or a NetBeans issue. I am very new to both.
I have a project in a folder, let's say C:\Folder1, and when I try to "deploy" it on the GlassFish server, I get strange errors about a missing class... though that class is not even a part of this project.
I believe that C:\Folder1 may have been something I used in the past for a different project but that is long gone.
So this new project, if I move it to folder C:\Folder1a or C:\Folder2 or ANYTHING else but C:\Folder1... then it will deploy fine. But if I move it back to Folder1 (i.e. the exact same directory structure underneath that level), I get the mysterious error messages from GlassFish server about being unable to find the class that it doesn't even need.
NOTE: When I say I am moving the project folder around, I am of course re-adding it to Netbeans every time via the "open project" under the file menu. In fact, I've even tried creating a brand new "naked" project, and then manually importing my source code into that project's folders. I have scanned every source doc for the mysterious missing classes and they aren't referenced anywhere! It has to be some metadata that Netbeans stores about that directory name since I once used it for a different project which DID have the mystery class name in it. Hopefully that makes sense...
Any ideas? Obviously I can work around it, but it still irks me.
    Thanks!

    Clean build
Unforunately that does not work. Here are the steps I followed:
Create new project in Netbeans, point it to an empty folder called Ex2605. After that, I bring a couple source files (.java and .xhtml) into that Ex2605 directory structure. When I clean and build, it says ok. When I try to deploy, I get this error:
+Error occurred during deployment: Exception while loading the app : java.lang.IllegalStateException: ContainerBase.addChild: start: org.apache.catalina.LifecycleException: java.lang.RuntimeException: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: LShoppingCart;. Please see server.log for more details.+
C:\<path>\Ex2605\nbproject\build-impl.xml:721: The module has not been deployed.
See the server log for details.
BUILD FAILED (total time: 16 seconds)
"ShoppingCart" is a class from a different project, that I once long ago had in a directory named Ex2605 at the same location. But that directory is long gone, it has been removed from the Netbeans project list, and there are NO references to the ShoppingCart class anywhere in any of the files currently in the Ex2605 folder. So that fact that Netbeans apparently is looking for something called LShoppingCart tells me it maintains a history somewhere else of what I used to have in the Ex2605 folder, and apparently I need to purge that history but have no idea how.
If I try all of the above with any directory NOT named Ex2605, it works fine.

  • Images are missing in Aperture v2.1.4 after Project folder is renamed.

I was working with a batch of pictures (images) in Aperture the other day. Opening new projects and renaming some old projects. All to add some meaning to the content of the Projects. I had 150 pictures (images) in a "Colorado" project folder and decided to rename the project to "Colorado 2011". Looked for the images in "Colorado 2011" to make an album and there are no more pictures. All have disappeared.
Can everyone tell me how to recover the pictures (images)??

I would have said "Try renaming the folder containing the images in Rh's Project Manager. That sometimes fixes the problem. You can revert to the old name afterwards."
Keeping all the images, and / or topics, in the root is never a good idea. It can slow things down and it's messy.
You can move the images you can see but obviously you cannot move the others. Try moving a topic that has one of the images to a different folder and see if that refreshes. Also try deleting the CPD file and reopening Rh.
    Backup first.

  • Drag drop photo import to aperture folder why auto new project folder appear .

i do import photos from desktop  to folder that i want in the aperture libary  . as soon as i drag and drop photos automatically new peoject folder appear in the libabry as name untitled project.. why? i dont want that new project folder.  i try to delete that folder and my picture all automatically deleted from library.
also if i try to delete photos from preject folder .. it completely deleted from master library .. picture will be lost.. why?
i drag and move pictures to  brand  new album or folder .. then try to delete wanted project folder - master picture are all gone.
now i have at least 30-40 of untitled project folder in the library ... pictrure are not movable i meant you can move but u still have to keep old project folder to avoid master picture can not be deleted ...
someone help me? did i make myself clear?

You might read the manual or the Help as this is all covered there.
If you want to import to a specific project use the File -> Import option. You can select your destination there.
Every photo in a Library is in a project. Projects are the basic building block of the Library. That's why.
Folders don't contain photos. They can contain Projects or Albums. These contain photos. Albums don't contain the actual photos, just links to them. So if you add a photo to an Album and then delete the project... you delete the photo.
Remember: you don't move photos to an Album, you add them.

"When I tried to reload those folders onto FCP nothing happened"
Brownale6 how can  u reload folder in to FCP.
As you said folders are moved to external disk but have you checked it should be like this
    For Event
external disk>Final Cut Events>your event folder.
    For project
external disk>Final Cut Projects>your project folder.

  • Aperture, why when I delete from an album it deletes it from the project folder

Aperture, why when I delete from an album it deletes it from the project folder also.
I thought that it was the other way round, in that the library was not the main entry.
I have 10 project folders and 6 albums and I want to remove the albums and keep the projects "as is"
I am unsure as to how I wound up with albums in the Aperture program.

Never used the Trash icon either (and generally don't show the Toolbar).  But at least the Tooltip is correct:
Now that I think on it, clicking "Trash" _should_ put the item in the Aperture Trash.  The confusion comes from the use of "Delete" -- specifically using a key with that label to execute a command that changes based on not only what kind of item is selected, but where the item is located.  So in this case (let me parenthetically add I have yet to take part in my morning caffeine ritual) "Delete" in the Tooltip does not equal "press and release the 'delete' key", but rather is used as a verb (rightly, imho).
Not sure what a better design might be, but perhaps at least popping up a window saying, "The selected items are Images in an Album.  Would you like to remove them from the Album, or move them to the Aperture Trash (which will delete them from the Project they are in)?".
Greg -- I suggest using the context-sensitive menu (a/k/a "right-click") to select the command you want:

  • Moving project folder

currently my project folder resides on the os hard drive and i would like to move it to my external scratch drive where it should be.
is there preferred method to do this to avoid issues? also it there a preferred location on the scratch drive folder structure where the project folder (and files) should reside?
    running fcp 6.06

    Nick Holmes wrote:
You open a project file in FCP and choose all items in the Browser.
The project will be Media Managed (use the copy option) to a location that you choose.
Is there any consolidation option aside from copying to move?
Example: Instruct media Manager to copy all files used in the project "My Film" to My external HD in the folder "FCP Projects". The sub folder My Film will be created there together with the copied media and a copy of the project file that is updated to link to the media in its new location.
Understood, however all the media files are where they should reside on capture scratch. No need for a new location.
I would like to move the folder containing all project files to my external hd. What am I missing here?
As above. The FCP project file is a document that tells FCP where to find the media it uses.
A project file does not contain media -it is just a set of instructions.
This is the one I would like to move.
Sure, you can simply copy the entire folder to a new location using the Finder.
This confirms what I had thought but there is no references in the manual to this.
Are you sure that absolutely everything you need is contained in it? You will need to open each project in FCP and relink.
Or might there be elements lying around in other places? Use the Media Manager to consolidate.
Great info, more clarity now Nick. Consolidation possible without moving?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Images "Disappear" When Moving a Project But Really They'r e Just Invisible

Last night I imported 442 images into a new project. I rated them, and edited about 40-50. This morning I moved the project within the same library. When I did so, all the images disappeared, sort of. The project appeared empty. I let it sit a couple of minutes, and undid the move to no effect.
I checked to see if a filter was blocking the images but it was not the problem. I checked the Project properties and it showed the images were all there (plus, I use referenced files and I hadn't deleted the CF card so worst case scenario I had all my originals). Also, when I displayed all the projects in a browser view window, the project showed up and I could sweep through all the thumbnails in the project browser. But again, if I selected the project and tried to see the images in either the browser, viewer, or split view, nothing showed up. No thumbnails, no file names, no empty thumbnails, nothing. The photos were sort of invisible.
I "solved" the issue by moving an image - any image - from another project into the problem project. Suddenly that photo and all the other images, were visible. Removing the random image did not recreate the problem.
Since I no longer have the problem I'm posting for 2 reasons: (1) to publish the problem and my fix in case anybody gets the same problem, and (2) to see if anybody knows what caused this and if there is a more direct fix than my weird indirect fix. Thanks.

I have had the same thing happen consistently. I import images into a default project. Then when I move the project into an organizational folder... all the images disappear. After a couple of panics, I have now realized that if I stay calm, close Aperture, then open it again, the pictures are all present. Quite a pain in the butt, but at least there is a work around. Albeit a bit scary .
    Best,
    Jim

  • Why are my photos not as sharp when I import them into Facebook from the Aperture Projects file, compared to when I 'share' them with Facebook within the Aperture programme? There is a noticeable difference and has been spoiling my photos for some time.

Hi all, I take wildlife photos (mostly birds) as a hobby, and have become frustrated with the quality of my photos recently when shared online, particularly Facebook.
I started blaming my camera ( a Canon 7D) as I changed it a few months ago from a Canon 550D, and I soon noticed that the images were not as good. Then I realised it was when I started using Aperture.
I started by using the 'share' option within Aperture but I soon realised that then I have no control over the creation of an album, and the photos start appearing on facebook before I have finished uploading them and given them captions. Plus if I subsequently move them or export them to my back up drive then they disappear from Facebook!
So I started creating albums within Facebook and then importing the photos from the aperture projects file on my computer. Because they are imported I can then delete or move the aperture file and the photos stay on facebook. Otherwise my macbook was becoming completely full.
However to test my theory I have today uploaded the same photo edited in Aperture stored in the same projects folder using the two different methods described above, and there is a very distinct difference between the quality of the two images. The shared ones are very much sharper than the imported ones.
I am a computer novice and don't know how to check what the quality settings are, or how to adjust anything to improve the way the photos go into facebook. I do have a manual but I just cant understand it :-(
I have tried a free sample of Lightroom 5 and my photos  look amazing, there is such a difference, but I don't want to give up with Aperture unless the problem really can't be solved.
Sorry for such a long first post, I would be very very grateful for any help you can give me!
    Regards
    Susan

Generally I would not use Facebook for sharing any photos, it compresses the photos substantially, and when you have shadows and dark colours you get visible "bands" where there should be subtle gradients, ie at sunsets and sunrises.
It sounds like you are using two methods to upload to Facebook:
    1. Sharing from within Aperture, which basically syncs Facebook with your Aperture album, so any changes made at either end gets synced, hence the deletions from Albums, although the original file should still be in your library, just removed rom the album. It is like a playlist in iTunes.
    2. Exporting pics and uploading to Facebook from the browser.
I am not sure how method 1 gets compressed, but I know that uploading hi-res jpegs to Facebook using method 2 results in poor quality images.
I wouldn't even bother comparing option 1 or 2, and they will both be poor images once you view them on Facebook, as opposed to viewing uploaded images on proper image sharing / hosting sites.
Your problem is not with Aperture, it is using Facebook for showing your work.
If you export pics form Aperture at high res jpegs or TIFFs your images will be fine.
If you insist to use Facebook as your way to share your work, then your workflow should be this:
    1. Right click images you want to share.
    2. Select Export version.
    3. Export as 100% size and ensure the export settings are set at 100% quality.
    4. Upload this pic into Facebook.
This will get you the best image size and resolution on Facebook.
    See how you go.

  • IMovie '11 How do I recover a project that appears within the IMovie Projects folder but does not show in the Project Library?

I have had my MBP for just over 3 months now!  Yes, I made the switch and up until now I have been quite happy.
I now have my Time Capsule, Apple TV running and am generally getting used to life as a Mac user.............even bought Aperture and loaded all the family photos.  Now time to make some Travel movies.
I have been working on a particular IMovie project for a few weeks now.  Size is 365MB.  Yesterday I closed IMovie and when accessing later that project is not available in the Project Library window.  It does appear in the IMovie Projects folder but I cannot open it.  I have copied the file to DVD just in case.  All up I have 4 Projects, the other 3 are practice files, smaller but they do appear in the Project Library.
I have scoured the bulletin boards and tried many suggested fixes to no avail.  Main suggestion was to remove the following files from Library/Preferences
    com.apple.iMovieApp.plist
    com.apple.iApps.plist
However, this did not sort out my problem.  In the end I put back the original files.
Does anyone have a straightforward fix for my problem or is this one of those ongoing issues that that needs Apple's attention.
After all the file is there with the others.  They are available.
I realise that I can restore from Time Capsule but I am missing the last three days thanks to 'drop out'.
    Thanks.......

    Gweggie Boy wrote:
Yes, considering we have an ongoing 'glich' within an Apple program with no obvious solution, we should be able to direct it straight to an Apple rep.  I will peruse this possibility when I get a moment.
You can report the problem by providing feedback to Apple. In the iMovie app, from the menu select iMovie > Provide iMovie Feedback. This will take you to an Apple page where you can complete a form and submit it to Apple.
The fix for this will probably turn out to be simple/easy.....................so why doesn't Apple comment and/or address it????
Other than the forum moderators, Apple doesn't normally monitor these forums, nor make comments on posts. So, it's up to us to report the problem to them directly (using the feedback form mentioned above).
As the problem has affected me just the one time (touch wood), I haven't bothered to report it as yet. But, after seeing your posts on this, I'm now reconsidering that. Something must be triggering it. My system is in pretty good shape, so I'm guessing it must be a glitch of some sort, either in Mountain Lion or in the iMovie app itself. Perhaps it's a 3rd party app causing the problem? It doesn't give us much confidence now, in that we may start worrying about losing other projects.
A good practice is to duplicate the project from time to time (something I'll be doing more of), although Time Machine backups also provide the necessary security. To duplicate, in Project Library view (where all the projects are listed) click on the project name so that it is highlighted, then select File > Duplicate Project. Alternatively, right-click (or Control-click) on the project name and select Duplicate Project from the pop-up menu. Of course, you may already know this. Duplicating probably won't guarantee that the copy will not also disappear from the Project Library, but is worth doing anyway.
As I mentioned in the post I linked to earlier, when the problem arose with my iMovie project I was using ProRes 422 clips I had imported from a Final Cut Pro X Event. My immediate thought was that ProRes 422 had caused the problem. But this of course may have been coincidental - reinforced now by your experience, where you are probably working with Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC) clips.
Anyway, glad to hear that you've recovered your project through Time Machine. Unfortunately, I had to start from scratch as I had Time Machine turned off during my editing sessions (that's a story for another day).

  • "Moving a project from network L: drive to C: drive - how do I relink the files?

    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/PremierePro/4.0/WS3D22F379-B6C7-4d8c-9548-26AA3E1EA74F.html
In the above thread "Moving a project to another computer" it states the assets should retain their file names and folder locations so that Premiere Pro can find them and relink them to their clips in the project automatically and although I'm only a novice PP user that is standard advice for any software.  However I can't find advice anywhere on how to swap a project from one disk drive to another on the same computer.
What I want to do is move the project media files off my network (L:) drive to the C: drive of the editing computer as all the advice on here about disk drives is not to use network drives.  I've copied the files over but how do I replace the media file links within the PP project which are currently pointing to the sub-folders on my L:drive with replacement one's pointing to the same folder names but with the path as C: drive.  Sorry if it is a numpties question but I'm not finding the answer via search.
Reason for shifting project - for some reason the sequence files were being lost when I reopened the project so I had to reuse the last good auto-save despite loss of some editing work and the project had also suddenly started taking up to an hour to load all the linked media.  Given the advice about not using network drives decided to eliminate one of the possible causes before going any further with risk of losing the edited file..

I strongly agree with Jim on where to relocate the Project and media files.
Now, when you do Move the files, the Paths (absolute) in the PRPROJ file(s), will no longer be correct. The drive letter will have changed.
When you Open your Project from its new location, you will get a question dialog, "Where is file _____ ?" for the first Asset, where the link is now broken. Using the Finder, navigate to the folder, where that first missing Asset is NOW located, and select that. PrPro will then look in that folder, and will automatically relink to all Assets in that folder. If you have your Assets in multiple folders, you will need to repeat, for each folder, and again, PrPro will relink to all Assets in THAT folder. Depending on the folder/sub-folder hierarchy, you will have to repeat for all folders.
When all Assets have been relinked, I would immediately do a Save_As, incrementing the Project's name, so as to NOT overwrite that original Project file - just in case you ever need to revisit that.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Aperture Hot folder not importing after first picture?

I'm shooting a Leica X1 with aa Eye-Fi Pro card- I've set up everything correctly including the latest aperture Hot Folder. It worked fine a few times.
Now it's not importaing anything after the first JPG (and I'm shooting JPG+DNG Pairs). Someone else in the community had the EXACT same problem but just said they "solved" it without explanation.
Eye-Fi imports it into the folder, but the Hot Folder script doesn't automatically move it into Aperture. I've tried quitting and restarting both apps, and even reinstalling the hot folder app.
First, you've got to be kidding me that we are using such a rinky-**** script. If I paid $99 for a **** card that's only feature over the lesser model is that it works with RAW, why do they not integrate into Aperture natively? Why do they think that only iPhoto integration is enough? Who is using iPhoto with RAW files (I'm sure there are some but come on the majority will be using Aperture). Plus this script doesn't save information as basic as which folder is the hot folder or which Aperture project I want it going into. So every time I start up my computer I have to go through thr 5 or 6 step process of re-linking. COME ON.
Second, how do I fix the fact that it's NOT working? Right now I've got several pics in the hot folder and it's not importing them. Thanks.

It would appear that the majority of this post (the complaining parts) should be directed to the Eye-Fi people. None of this has anything to do with Aperture. Why they have never actually  intergrated with Aperture is something you have to ask them.
As for the hot folder script, that script has been around since at least 2006 without change. It is possible that it might have problems wiht Lion as there have been some changes regarding scripting with Lion. The script, while a nice bit of AppleScripting was never  a comercial product. It does what it does. Again your complaint about the workings of the script should be directed at the Eye-Fi folk as they recommend using it to use their card with Aperture.
One thing you can check is to make sure the script is attached to the folder you are importing the images into.
    regards
