Moving applications to external hd--how do I do this?

I would like to do some backing up and space making on my iMac before Leopard comes out. There are some applications and things that I think came on my iMac that I don’t think I have ever used, or that I need. Is there any reason to keep Garage Band, iMovie, Palm, or Zinnio (whatever that is) on my iMac?
Could I just move them to an external hard drive in case I want them someday, and if so how do I do it? Do I just drag the application from my applications folder to the external and after it copies trash the one in my applications folder? Is there anything I need to know before doing something like this?
Many thanks in advance.
Jane

Garage Band's biggest space hog isn't the application itself--it is the support files in the /Library/Audio folder and the /Library/Application Support/GarageBand folder. If you have iMovie and iDVD, it is the same deal: the application support files can take more space than the applications. You really need to know what you are doing to clean all this stuff up. I think it might even be easier to simply clone your internal drive to an external drive, restart from the external drive to make sure everything works as expected, then keep the clone updated and, when Leopard comes out, do a fresh install of it on the internal drive.

  • My MacBook Pro hard drive is almost full and I wish to store my Aperture Library on an external drive, how do I do this and is the use of USB2 suitable or do I need to use a Firewire external hard drive?

My MacBook Pro hard drive is almost full and I wish to store my Aperture Library on an external drive, how do I do this and is the use of USB2 suitable or do I need to use a Firewire external hard drive?

You'll get better performance if you use a Firewire hard drive (especially if you buy a 7200 RPM drive). Firewire's IO speed is significantly faster than USB 2.  USB 2 has a theoretical max speed of 480 Mbps except that it has extremely high over-head.   The fastest speeds you can typically get are about 300 Mbps.   Firewire, on the other hand, has very little overhead.  The fastest speeds you can get are very nearly 800 Mbps.  You will typically be constrained by the maximum read/write speed of the drive, not the speed of the I/O on the Firewire bus.  Now if you had one of those nice shiny new Macs with the Thunderbolt I/O and a Thunderbolt drive (Light Peak) ... I think they alter space and time so that your data arrives before you know you want it.
Also... unless you want to buy a solid state drive (very expensive), try to keep your hard drives from becoming much more than about 60% full if you want great performance.  A nearly "full" hard drive is, on average, only about half as fast as the same hard drive when nearly empty.
USB 2 will work perfectly fine... just not as fast.
Also... it's much safer to move the entire Aperture library than to "relocate masters".  Your images must be managed.  You can Aperture manage them, or you can manage them.  But someone has to manage them.  If you "relocate" them so that they are no longer stored inside the Aperture library then you'll need to work out a system of how you decide to organize things and it's critically important that you don't start moving files around or deleting things without Aperture's knowledge.  If you do, you'll break the links to your masters and start having problems with missing masters.  If you have Aperture manage the library then you don't need to worry about any of that stuff.... it's safer.
Do make backups (use the Aperture Vault or use some other backup program, but make sure you back up your work if you care about it.)  There are only two kinds of hard drives in the world:  (1) those that have failed and (2) those that are going to fail.  There are no exceptions to this rule.  Hard drives are cheap.  Backup software is built into Aperture and into your Mac.

  • Safari 5.0.6 will not open, says application quit unexpectedly. How can I fix this?

Safari 5.0.6 will not open, says application quit unexpectedly. How can I fix this?

    Hello,
Open console in Applications>Utilities, check the system log for the date/time of the last problem  & the Startup right after that for clues.

  • My 2009 iMac freezes and won't run more than one application at a time - how can I fix this?

Help! My iMac has been getting worse regarding freezing, especially when trying to open iPhoto. It will load slowly, and then I get the pinwheel of death for ever, until I shutdown and try over again. It usually takes several tries, and usually overnight. How can I resolve this issue?

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
    Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the log for messages that may indicate a system issue. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|timed? ?o' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
    Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
Run Software Update. If there's a firmware update, install it.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a portable computer, check the cycle count of the battery. It may be due for replacement.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane. See whether there's any change.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
    Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the View menu or the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for User, System, and Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the Memory tab. What value is shown in the bottom part of the window for Swap used?
Next, select the Disk tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in andWrites out.)
    Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • MacBook Pro refuses to eject external disk - How do I make this stop?

So I have an issue that's been bugging me for a couple weeks, now (from even before I upgraded to Mountain Lion), that I, really, need a solution to.  I have a 1TB external drive divided into 3 partitions.  I eject it whenever I wish to remove it from my computer, but, lately, there is 1 partition that, constantly, refuses to be ejected.  I get the usual warning in this instance:
The disk [volume name] wasn't ejected because one or more programs may be using it.
I click "Try Again" and it doesn't work.  It works with "Force Eject", but I don't want to cause any unnecessary damage to the contents of the drive.  The next time it happened, I ran the following in Terminal:
sudo lsof -xf +d "/Volumes/[volume name]"
This told me that the "mds" process was accessing the disk, which means Spotlight was using it.  I clicked the "Spotlight" icon in the menu bar and Spotlight didn't appear to be doing anything.  I can't quit the "mds" process in Activity Monitor, because the process just starts again.  The only thing that worked was logging out, then, logging back in, then, I could, immediately eject the volume.
Of course, the next time I plugged the disk in, the same thing happened.
How do I stop this from happening?  How can I stop Spotlight from, constantly, holding this disk captive?  I shouldn't have to log out to eject a disk.
    Please advise.

    Cerebro,
I am in the same boat but I think you could help me and many others by telling us what what in the folders that were keeping your G-Raid or HARD DRIVE from UNMOUNTING?
I can force quit.......and even force quit to get the DiskUtility to treat that like a unmount.....
but in my case I may have installed software from AUTODESK that uses WIRETAPPING on the EXTERNAL DRIVE because that is the AUTHORIZATION method and also the CONTENT method they use to allow me to use their software for FREE as a STUDENT or EDU.
But I tried to kill these processes in the Activity Monitor and it just comes back or creates new numbers..
so I am not sure if that is the culprit...
I had read other culprits....like other 3rd party BACKUP SOFTWARE (not Time MACHINE) that was hanging the computer......
I am wondering why you had APPLE CARE help you and they couldn't even find the solution....
so without you sharing with me even in a private email as you didn't share what the FOLDER was for software.
I would be much appreciated as if this is the similar case then I can contact them and just ask them the workaround if it is not an APPLE thing......
Most POWER USERS that understand MOUNTAIN LION or SNOW LEOPARD  and UNIX for that matter know the TERMINAL like a second language...
    I wish I did but I don't yet.....
I really need to take a class or just read these ADMINISTRATION BOOKS for APPLE CERTIFICATION to understand such things.....
Please let me know anyone else reading this if you have some good ideas? or IRC CHAT or other FORUMS that strictly deal and discuss APPLE OSX and UNIX PROGRAMMING as well as NETWORKING without the FILE SYSTEM.....most of this is ADMINISTRATION LEVEL or root level knowledge, and should be offered as a MANUAL when you buy the COMPUTER........or at least a FREE PDF instead of having to pay the 50 or 60 dollars for the current flavor of OSX.....
I paid a 3 dollars for SNOW LEOPARD was happy updating school MAC LABS in LAUSD with that knowledge...but now I am MOUNTAIN LION 10.8 so I am wondering is it really worth the upgrade BOOK is that SYSTEM that much DIFFERENT than SNOW LEOPARD? can anyone tell me?
    thanks so much
    singleton
PS- - my problem is the same I have a G-RAID that will not EJECT unless I FORCE QUIT the DRIVE.....
I can't figure out what is causing it to hang......how should I go about finding out exactly what it is?
    thanks

I have tried to download the podcast "Ab Trimmer" from Exercise Tv and it does not allow the download to be completed. Comes up with Unable to Download podcast prompt. I now just want this to be removed from my download list, how do I do this?

The fix was to completely remove all Apple Software following guides in previous posts.
Then download and re-install latest iTunes 64-bit, making sure to Run As Administrator.
This fixed it. Now the next thing seems to be that as I move from one device to another to close and restart iTunes between each one. Treat it gently. It seems to break easily and a lot.

    Hi drnels,
Are you saying you still have access to the backup? If you do, you should take a look at [[Backing up your information]]. It will show you where all of your personal information is stored in Firefox and how you can copy it to a new install.
    Hopefully this helps!

  • Just moved from GoLive to DW, how do I do this?

I’ve just moved over to Dreamweaver CS3 from GoLive and
there are a few things I cant figure out how to do that we’re
    really simple in GoLive:
1.How do you make a scrollable window? I want to make a

to do this with an inline Frame in GoLive but this seems very

2.Is there any easy way of making a simple slide show in

Can anyone help or point me in the right direction?

  • Application launch error? How do I fix this?

Once again, I have messed up something.
Every time I try to open something with Acrobat Reader, I get this message:
The application "Acrobat Reader" could not be launched because of
    a shared library error:
    *-<Reader 5.0><Reader5.0><CoolTypeCarbonLib>"
What in the heck does this mean and how do I get rid of it so I can open apps. with Acrobat reader?
    Thanks

    TigeetheCat,
When you click on the download link on the VersionTracker page, you should get the option to save the AdbeRdr705DLM_enufull-1.dmg file to disk or to open it. (I generally save installers to disk so that I can later archive the installers onto CD-R if desired.) Double-clicking the .dmg disk image file will mount the AdbeRdr705DLM_enufull disk image. If you click on the disk icon itself in left of the Finder window, you'll see in the right of the window the DownloadReader7.pkg file; double-click that to run the installer. It sounds as if you accidentially clicked on the eject icon to the right of the AdbeRdr705DLM_enufull disk icon / file name in the left pane of the Finder window; that's a shortcut for ejecting removable volumes.
IMPORTANT: Adobe installers have a nasty habit of messing up file permissions; be sure to open Disk Utility, select your hard drive, and run Repair Permissions after updating Reader. Also, you may want to cancel the Adobe Downloader part of the install, as that's been known to periodically cause drastic slowdowns trying to open Adobe produsts (it tries to contact Adobe's servers to check for updates, and doesn't handle things gracefully if the servers are down or busy).
(Thanks to Dave Sawyer for pointing out Adobe's update and download manager coding style in connection with their CS2 update.)
You shouldn't need to have OS 9 running at all. Again, check for login items and disable any CanoScan items, check System Preferences/ Classic and make sure it's not set to launch when you log in, force-quit Classic in System Preferences if it shows as running, and drag Classic CanoScan files to the trash, leaving only the OS X CanoScan driver software. Check on the OS 9 System Folder (not the OS X System) icon at the root level of the hard drive and open the Extensions folder; move any files from CanoScan into the Trash or a holding folder you can create somewhere outside of System Folder> Extensions. If you really want to block OS 9 / Classic from running, open System Folder and drag the System and Finder files in there to the desktop (or a holding folder on the desktop).

  • A photo upload application in my business software will no longer work, as I keep getting the message "Application Error General Exception"; how can I fix this?

Continuing from the original question above...
    The full error message reads:
    Application Error
    General Exception
    Name: com.aurigma.imageuploader.ImageUploader
    ClassNotFoundException: com.aurigma.imageuploader.ImageUploader.class
This seems to be tied in with an update to Java 7, but my software won't allow me to proceed w/o the update. As soon as I update Java, the system gets corrupted and I just continually get the above message. I've done all I know to do, and I'm on my 4th 'restore', all the way back to June 14th. I really need this resolved, as my livelihood depends, in part on uploading pix I take in the field.
I'm using a 2.3Gh dual-core PC w/ 4 Gs of RAM on a totally updated WIndows XP operating system using Mozilla Firefox.
PLEASE, if there's a fix readily available, or if you can help me find one, I would be most seriously grateful.
    Thank you!!!

Does this software run in Firefox, or is it a stand-alone program?
Assuming it is a stand-alone program:
If you need to stick with an older version of Java until that software is updated, you can disable Java in your web browers to protect against its vulnerabilities. Naturally this will disable some website features (for example, this uploader on sites that use it). To disable Java in all browsers, you can use the Java control panel, security tab and uncheck the box to use Java in browsers.
(I don't know whether that takes effect immediately or after exiting and restarting the browsers.)
