Moving apps between users

Is it possible to move apps from one user to another on the same computer?

Generally, applications aren't installed for one user or another. They're installed in the central Applications folder, which all users have access to unless you've set up Parental Controls to limit that.
If, for some reason, a user has their own Applications folder, you should move the app to the main Applications folder, which will allow all users to have access to the program.
Some apps, which tend to launch at login time, do not have an obvious program file, and are, instead, stored in Library folders. In these cases, you should probably reinstall using the "install for all users" option, or simply reinstall for the other user.

  • Moving apps between screens

I'm having trouble moving apps between screens. I can move one app but then if I try and move another, I drag it off the side of the screen but the screen doesn't change. The only workaround I have is to move an app to the dock, change the screen with a swipe, then move the app out of the dock back onto the new screen. Is anyone else having this problem?

I thought this was broken on my iPad after upgrading to iOS 4.2. After messing around, I found that if I move an icon around on the screen and hold it at the edge of the screen for a few extra seconds, with the edge of the icon slightly off the screen. Then the screen will change.

  • Moving apps between databases

I have a fairly complicated application that has thousands of queries all with table names with fully qualified db links built in. For instance:
    select *
    from [email protected]
There are lots of dynamic queries buried in PL/SQL too.
Now I want to be able to shift this application easily between our dev and prod environments and I thought I'd be able to create two application items: Fnnn_DBUSERNAME and Fnnn_DBLINK then export the application, do a global find/replace and change all the tables to &Fnnn_DBUSERNAME.tablename&Fnnn_DBLINK.
But the SQL then becomes dynamic SQL and needs to be in a PL/SQL block. So all the queries would need significant rework to insert escape characters and concatenation.
I guess when moving between dev and prod I could export the app then find all links of one type and replace them with another before importing to prod but it doesn't seem very elegant.
Is there a standard approach to making applications portable?

You might want to consider creating synonyms in the APEX application's parsing schema for all object references of the the type <owner>.tablename@dblink.
The values for 'owner' and 'dblink' can be chosen as appropriate for the environemnt. The application should then simply refer to the synonyms rather than the fully qualified names.
This will make moving your apps between environments easier.

  • Moving Photos between users

Hi I am trying to clean up computer & am new to iPhoto. We have 5 members of family + 1 user for family photos as users on one mac. All have down loaded photos into their individual photo library resulting in a massive double up of pics & also pic that should be in family user not being there.
My Qu is can I import/export photos between users on same mac. We are using iPhoto 09
    Thanks
    Chris

Enable iPhoto Sharing In each iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. The Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window and from the individual libraries to the Main one.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.

  • Moving iTunes between User Accounts on home Computer

Hi all - I'd appreciate some advice please. When my son set up iTunes on our home XP computer he did so in his own user account. This cannot be accessed by my daughter in her user account or in the general family account. How do I move the base set up between user profiles on the same computer?
    Regards
    Phil

My advice is to consolidate your son's library to a shared folder.
Then everyone can access the music from their accounts, yet keep separate ratings & playcounts, etc.
If you just move things around in windows, your son will either lose ratings & playcounts, or the paths to the music. Here is how to consolidate:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1364
    Here is some light reading
    Multiple users, use Method 1:http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1495
Sharing files on same PC: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1203
This is important so you don't get duplicates files and fill up your hard drive.

  • Sharing apps between users on 1 computer

We just gave our old MBAir to a family member. We bought some basic software for her as well. After the fact it was determined that one of her daughters would benefit by its use as well and we had her create a separate user account. Despite having worked with Macs for 20 years this was the first real experience I've had with having two people using one machine with discrete accounts so I wasn't prepared for this problem. The daughter found she was unable to use the MSWord that existed in her mother's account and I am now assuming this is because each account requires its own software. Is this correct and if so is there anyway for the daughter to access the apps in her mother's account or does she have to load her own version? I wonder if MS sells multiple user licenses retroactively?
    thanks
    alan b

It sounds like you installed Microsoft Office in the User's Applications folder and not the main Applications folder.
Simply drag Microsoft Office folder from her Applications folder to the main folder and it will be assessible for the other User.
Only install an app in the User's Application folder if you do not want to share that app.
One other thought is they upgraded OS X to Lion or higher and they have Office 2004 that does not run under Lion and higher.

  • Moving files between users using Root?

I won't have access to my Mbp for quite some time otherwise id test this out, and my time capsule took a ** on me so I figured I'd ask here. I wasn't able to find anything relevant online but then again I'm not too familiar with this process.
What I hope to accomplish is to use Root to copy/move iTunes media files from one admin account to another. Is this feasible?
    Thanks!

I presume from what you write that this is referring to two accounts on the same Mac? Instead of activating Root (if that is what you intend), why not simply copy the iTunes folder using the Drop Box (in Users>Username>Public). Are you moving/copying them all? More information might bring forth some more accurate advice.

  • Moving Libraries between users on same MacBook Pro

So when I bought my new MacBook Pro, I started a new user account and imported my old user acct from my Black MacBook.  This may have been a mistake because now I have an iPhoto library and an iTunes library for each user on my new MacBook Pro.  I would like to move these libraries from my old MacBook user acct to the new acct on the new MacBook Pro.  Is there a way to do this?  I ultimately want to delete the old MacBook acct and just have one user on my MacBook Pro.  Does that make sense?
    Thanks!
    T

Log into the old account. Drag the Libraries to the Users/Shared folder.
Switch to the new Account. Drag the Libraries to the Pictures or Music folders as appropriate.

  • Moving Apps between Mempry Card and Device

Is there a way to move apps from your device to your memory expansion card and vice versa? I recently downloaded QuickVerse to my memory card. It runs but it is so slow, I was thinking it might be faster if the app resided on the device.

  • APEX - Moving apps between databases

APEX applications are stored in the database, correct? What happens to the APEX applications when you need to recreate the database on another server? Are the APEX apps backed up as part of a database backup and/or Export? How do I move forms from one database to another? Is this a difficult task? Would it be considered a plus or a minus to using APEX?
Please let me know your thoughts as I'm attempting to gain approval to install APEX. Thanks.

Apex is 100% in the database, so if you do a full backup of your database, you backup your applications.
If you have external files (css, javascript, images etc.) in the file system on the web server, you have to backup these separately, of course.
How do I move forms from one database to another?Apex has an export/import utility for that. You can do that via Apex itself, or via sql scripts.
Would it be considered a plus or a minus to using APEX?A huge PLUS!

  • Share apps between users accounts?

we have 3 accounts set up. I installed Myst Revelation on my wife's account, but also want access to it from mine. I thought i was supposed to install it on my account as well, but it says it's already there. However, if i navigate to it in my account, I can see the parent Ubisoft directory but no applications are visible. So, i went back to wife's account and changed permission of this directory to Me, and then tried changing to System. Now I see the app but it looks like a word document with that circle-line-through-it thing over it and when I click it, it says "not supported".
Is there a way to share or am I supposed to install it in another directory and have two copies? Every other app in the Applications directory are shared, right, why not this? What am I missing?

    hi duane
I think I already did that. After installing it from "Barb", I went to "Kelly" and tried to install it after seeing that from "kelly" I couldn't play it. It said that it was already installed and did I want to Install it in another directory. Seemed redundant, having two 8 gig games installed and didn't seem right at all to me.
I did some more digging and found some help in Mac help of all places, heheh. Suggested it is a permissions problem. That some game manufacturers create the install packages without setting the proper permissions or haveing them 'set' the permissions when installed. Help suggestd also that this is a known problem and to get around it, just install these packages in the accounts that they will be primarily useed from, hahahaha, well duh.
I played around a bit with the 'details' part of 'ownership and permissions' in the folder's info as well as each individual application. Actually got the Myst icon to reveal itself (it resembled that generic application icon at first) and look like the correct icon. Upon invoking it, it did that animated expanding thing that happens when you run a program, but nothing happens after that.
    So close, huh?
So it may be permissions, but I'm still missing something. I reinstalled it in my account.
Anybody alse you know have this issue, duane? Again, thanks for your help.

  • How can i share purchased apps between 2 diff users on the same mac?

How can I share purchased apps between 2 diff users on the same mac?

A purchased app is associated with an Apple ID. A user with a different Apple ID cannot use the app unless they also use the same Apple ID.
I cannot use my wife's apps nor she mine because each were purchased with different Apple IDs.

  • Sharing iPhone apps between two accounts on a single mac.

Firstly, apologies if this topic has been covered many times before, I've tried to look, but can't find the exact answer I need.
I have recently purchased two iphones and want to use them on seperate apple ID's - I want different iCloud storage for each phone.
I have a macbook which has two accounts (one for me and one for my wife).  When I login to my account I have access to my itunes account and when my wife logins into her account she has access to her itunes account.
I have followed the instructions for sharing musics between two users on the same mac - by moving the itunes media folder to the shared folder on my mac.  I have copied everything in that folder (music, movies, apps etc).  I have also set up home sharing as I believe that you can share apps between itunes accounts using it.  Everything seems to have worked ok in terms of her itunes being able to access the music, movies etc, but the apps don't seem to work properly.  I went through the subfolders of the itunes media folder and changed the folder permissions to read and write for everybody (because I was getting a permissions error) and she now has access to the apps that are there (on my itunes account), but the apps that she has downloaded on her phone are not being transferred to the macbook.  I've tried the reset warnings suggestion and that hasn't solved the issue.
Am I doing something wrong?  Should the apps folder within the itunes media folder not be moved with the music when transferring to the shared folder?  Any ideas why music and movies sharing is working ok, but not apps?
    Thanks in advance!

    This should help:
iTunes: How to share music between different accounts on a single computer

  • How do I share my photographs between User Accounts

I want to share my iphoto photographs between users on the iMAC. Is this as suimple as moving the iphoto folder to the public folder?
    iMAC   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Davinho
No it's not that simple. iPhoto is a single user app, not designed for multiple users working simultaneously.
What do you mean by sharing? If you want the others to have the ability to VIEW photos, there's a way. In the main account got to iPhoto -> Preferences -> Sharing and enable Share this Library. Leave iPhoto running and go to the other account using Fast User Switching. In that account, enable 'Look for Shared Libraries' in the iPhoto Preferences, an the main library will turn up in the left hand pane of iPhoto. Remember iPhoto must be running in the main account for this to work.
If you want the others to be able to add, edit, keyword etc., then that's a different way. In this case, move the iPhoto Library Folder to the Users/Shared folder. This way both accounts can see it. Then you'll need to configure the permissions to allow everyone read/write access. (you can do this using BatchMod from http://macchampion.com/arbysoft/)
Then hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto, Choose 'Locate' and navigate to the new location for the library. Repeat for both accounts. This will give read/write access tot he library for both accounts.
However, as I said above, iPhoto is not designed for multiple users accessing the db simultaneously. Doing this increases the likelihood of db corruption greatly, so backing up is the order of the day.
Personally, especially if you're still finding your way on the Mac, I recommend the first way. It's safer. When your confidence is up, you can easily move on to the second way.

  • Intel Macs & G5s: Problems when moving projects between them

An earlier post* suggesting complete compatibility between the latest FCP in a G5 and in an Intel Mac may be in error.
We are experiencing continuing crashes using our Intel Mac when we work on projects that were originally either imported or partially rendered in the G5.
It has gotten to the point where we feel we must keep projects completely isolated from each other: Either it is a "G5 project" or it is an "Intel Mac" project. Moving projects back and forth between the two leads to problems such as:
The Intel Mac does not recognize any renders done in the G5...
The Intel Mac crashes when rendering 'G5' projects...
The Intel mac crashes when compressor goes to work to export sequences to mpeg...
The G5 works fine with Intel Mac-originated material: It is only in the Intel Mac where we have these problems.
Both systems are up-to-the minute on their OS, security updates, and FCP versions. We are using variously 720p/30 from the JVC GY-100UA and 1080i/30 from the Sony Z1U.
    Our questions are:
Is anyone else experiencing similar problems moving projects between a G5 and an Intel Mac?
Is anyone moving projects between the two platforms and experiencing NO problems at all? That information would be just as valuable, and very welcome.
Apple FCP development team: Is our experience unique or have you had other reports like this? Any idea what could be causing our problems -- and what we can do to fix them?

    Scott,
    Welcome to the discussions!
I have had no problems moving my G5 projects over to my MP.
You can not move render files between machines.
When you changed systems, did you use Migration Assistant to transfer your files over to your new Mac Pro? You might need to install from the disks in order to achieve native Intel performance. See if you installed Final Cut 5.1 on your G5 then it installed the PPC code... if you put that drive into your Mac Pro or used Migration Assistant to move the app over it is still the PPC code... When you install from the installation disk, Installer determines what system you are installing on (PPC or Intel) and that's what it installs. This goes for all of your "Universal Binary" apps...
In the System Profiler app. under Software/Applications
Final Cut Pro "kind" should be Universal on your MP.
The FCP development team do not read these posts, only users do.
