Moving ASM-based RAC to new storage device

We recently installed Oracle 11gR2 RAC on a REH 5.3 cluster. CRS, Voting Disk, and database files are all sitting on an ASM disk group (on a Clarion storage device). A decision is made to move everything to a new storage device (DMX). We are using EMC powerpath.
Is there an easy way to move this Oracle cluster from one storage device to another.
We can rsync the grid and RDBMS binaries which are installed on a linux filesystem on each node but I would like to know how to go about moving the shared storage which is hosted on the ASM.
We used asmlib 2.0 to create the ASM disk and then relied on the clusterware installer and DBCA to create the disk group, the cluster components, and the oracle database.
Do I need to backup the ASM database as well as our RAC database (using RMAN) into a flat filesystem first and restore them once the new ASM disk is created in the new storage device?
A step by step procedure will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Omer

Yes its possible without backup/restore.. good to take full back in case of any mishappening.
Please read metalink note for step by step process..

  • Moving my music onto a shared storage device

Is there a way to move my music and videos off my iPod and onto shared storage while maintaining the filenames?
I read one document that asks you to move the folders off the iPod and onto the device, but all the files are named in some type of encrypted fashion.
I was curious to find out if there was a way to save my titles and so forth?
    Thanks.

  • Parallels help: moving windows xp files to usb storage device

hi i am using parallels and windows xp on my mac and i am trying to transport files from windows xp into a usb device but whenever i try to move the files they are just shortcuts and not the actual file any help is appreciated.

Unlike Templeton, I see this as a Windows question and not a Parallels one...
    Try this -
Once you have selected the files you need to copy, hold the CTRL key and tap C (copy). Then open up the USB drive via My Computer, then hold the CTRL key and tap V (paste). The file(s) should copy over like you needed and not just a shortcut.
Multiple files can be selected beforehand by one of three ways. If you wanted all the files in a given folder copied, just hold the CTRL key and tap A (select all). If a block of files is to be selected, click the first file, hold SHIFT, then click the last file in the series. If you are just choosing a file here and there, you can just hold CTRL and click on the files to be copied until you have all the ones desired selected. A single regular click can be used to cancel the selection.

  • I just moved and wireless internet is now provided for me. I am not using my Time Capsule as a router anymore but can I still use it as my storage device wirelessly?  So far I cannot get it to work. Please help.

    Hi,
I just moved to a new place.  I used to have my own internet setup and used my Airport Time Capsule as my router.  Now that I don't need to use it as a router I would still like to use it as a storage device for my pictures.  Can I still do that wirelessly or do I have to plug it into my computer?  And if I do (which would really be crumby) do I just use a USB cable?
Please help.  I have a lot of work stored on it and I am feeling pretty stuck at the moment.
    Thank you,
    Charlie

You can use your Time Capsule in your new network in a number of ways. One would be as a NAS device which I believe you are looking to do.
To do so, you would connect the TC to the new router by Ethernet. You would also want to reconfigure the TC as a bridge and disable its wireless radios.
You can do both of these using the AirPort Utility, as follows:
    Run the AirPort Utility.
Select the TC, and then, select Edit.
    Select the Network tab.
Change Router Mode to: Off (Bridge Mode)
    Select the Wireless tab.
    Change Network Mode to: Off
Select Update and allow the TC to restart.

that uses for c drive (operation system) a solid state disk (64 GB Kingston V-SERIES 2.5 SATA MLC-SSD)
the question is this hard drive considered flash based storage device and i am going to have a problem
with the istallation or it would be ok
and if is a problem with it can i install the cs4 to my other hard drive that is mostly for data
or cs4 has to be installed on the drive with the operation system

  • Best way to migrate ASM diskgroups to new diskgroups on new storage

Hi, we are currently planning a Storage migration, and we have 2 node RAC 10gR2 so we need to know a better way to perform data migration from current ASM Diskgroups to new storage.
Could anyone comment about this ?

Connect new storage to host, add new disks to disk groups, remove old disks from diskgroups.

  • How to migrate RAC/ASM 10g to a new SAN on Unix

    Hi everybody,
I have an Oracle RAC 10g using ASM on Solaris Sparc 10.
And I need to change my SAN storage for a better.
Somebody can tell me the steps to follow or a Metalink note?
    Thanks & regards...

    Hi
With ASM your life is simple.. Just add the new disks from new storage to ASM and drop old disks and throttle the reblance operations..
ALTER DISKGROUP <DG> Add disk <from new storage>
    ALTER DISKGROUP <DG) drop disk <old disks>
    ALTER DISKGROUP <DG> REBALANCE POWER 11;
You can query the V$ASM_OPERATIONS to monitor the rebalance progress. Once all the disks are dropped, you can unplug the old storage from the system.
Similarly, you can use ocrconfig -replace ocr/ocrmirror to migrate the OCR (Online)
Votedisks, you need to bring the cluster down (due to a bug in 10g, online if you are 11)..
    # crsctl query css votedisk
    # crsctl add css votedisk <new vote disk> /crsctl delete css votedisk <old vote disk>

  • Can anyone recommend an external storage device to supplement my mac book air?  I already have a time capsule but want the new device to replicate the data on that so ideally would like a device that i can connect to the time capsule through a cable.

Can anyone recommend an external storage device to supplement my mac book air?  I already have a time capsule but want the new device to replicate the data on that so ideally would like a device that i can connect to the time capsule through a cable.

    Hi CJR
I'm not sure how Time Capsule can be replicated onto your external drive but there is a USB port on the back of TC that can be hooked up to any recent external drive.
Another thing to think about , besides a Time Capsule failure, is the theft of your Time Capsule, so it might be a good idea to consider separating any redundant back-up from your Time Capsule or both my be stolen.
TC will back up until full and then begin deleting the oldest back-ups.  Mine is a 2TB Time capsule.
My back-up plan is as follows:
    1.  Macbook Air back-up on Time Capsule though Time Machine backs up everything - I think it's about every 30 min or so.
    2.  Contacts, reminders, appointments, notes, email are backed up through iCloud.
    3.  iTunes and non-itunes purchased music is on iMatch (and no need to back-up) and any non-iTunes music is backed up on an HP external drive (in case Time Capsule dies)
    4.  Photos are on my MacBook Air and are backed up on my HP external drive.
    5.  Office documents (Excel, Powerpoint, Access etc) are stored in a Skydrive app (like iCloud) and Skydrive syncs these docuemnts with the MS  cloud and my old PC and does not alter their native format like storing in iCloud would do.
    Cheers

  • I'm trying to transfer music from iTunes on an old PC that uses an external storage device to a new PC (Windows 7) that will use that same external storage device.  I am also dealing with new iTunes 11.  How do I do this??  What folder does iTunes use?

I'm trying to transfer music from iTunes on an old PC (Windows Vista Home Basic) that uses an external storage device to store the files to a new PC (Windows 7 Starter) that will use that same external storage device.  I am also dealing with the new iTunes 11.  How can I accomplish this successfully?    What folder does iTunes use to store the data in?  I've tried several things.  Home Sharing caused duplicates but not all songs or apps transfered.  It is a large library! I've tried just setting the path in the Advanced Tab of iTunes preferences of the new computer with the external drive connected the same as the path when the external drive is connected to the old computer.  This was the best solution so far but still a few artists missing and some apps. Any suggestions?

Here are typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
With iTunes 11 you might also have a Home Videos folder inside iTunes Media.
In the simplest cases you copy the entire iTunes folder from <User's Music> on the source computer to <User's Music> on the target machine, install iTunes, and it "just works"TM.
If the media folder (inside the red outline) has been split out to a separate location then you can copy the library folder (outside the red outline) as before and connect the drive holding the media so that it has exactly the same path as before. If the drive appears as D: on one system and E: on the other then the library won't be able to find the media.
The crucial file is iTunes Library.itl - this contains a record of the tracks that have been added to the library, ratings, play counts, playlists etc.
See also: Make a split library portable.

  • My new iPhone 5 won't connect to iTunes, and when I connect to my computer it comes up as a usb storage device, also in the phone itself under usage it shows internal memory of 2gb and sd card 64 gb, is this an original iPhone or have I been sold a copy

My new iphone 5 can not connect to itunes, it comes up as a usb storage device when I plug it in, also in the phone under settings/usage it shows internal memory of 2gb and SD card of 64gb, I cannot get it to connect to itunes at all so cannot sync etc, is this a genuine Iphone or a copy. I have owned 4 iphones and never had a problem with connecting to iphones and restoreing to a backup.

    According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPhone_5
the iPhone5 has 1GB of RAM, and internal storage of 16, 32, or 64GB.
It does not use SD cards.
Fake iphones are really Android phones using the skin of iOS6.
Click on the App Store icon. If it takes you to Apple's App Store, then it's a real iPhone.
But if you are directed to Google Play, then I'm afraid you've gotten a copy.

  • Raw Storage device for 10g RAC

    Hi
What would be economical & of good quality RAW storage device for 10g RAC setup
    Thanks
    JIL

Sorry, but what do you mean shared networK?
Yes you need to ensure 2+ server hosts can access the storage array, but if you array can handle multiple direct connections then this is perfectly acceptable for RAC - this is Direct Attached Storage DAS.
Your original post made me think of NAS which may not be what you were meaning, but is how I read network device - NAS, NFS kinda thing - which is NOT a requirement for RAC.

I am thinking of buying a "new" iPad but I have a very large iPhoto library which I would like to keep intact and be able to view on my new iPad.  Is there a way to use a external storage device to store the iPhoto library and view it on the iPad?

You can't use an external hard drive like you would with a computer.
You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)
When you first connect the USB flash drive, you will only see thumbnails of the pics on the iPad; you have to import the pic file to see the full size. With your large library of pics, you will have to do this repeateably and then delete pics so you don't exceed your memory capacity.

  • Add LUN into asm in rac (Solaris)

I have a 2 node  oracle rac with asm . I have to add  new LUN  to asm  to increase space in asm disk group     I have  done the following on node1
    Ran format
Created the partition on slice4 on the new  device file corresponding to the LUN
Created the  block and character device file like  RAC_ORACLE_data_05 under /dev/dsk/oracle and /dev/rdsk/oracle (where the other  device files used by ASM also reside)  using the  major and minor number of the  new LUN
    Changed the permissions to oracle:dba
The new LUN is now visible  through the ASM on node 1 as RAC_ORACLE_data_05
My question is what steps I need to carry out on node 2  of the cluster
The disk is visible  on node 2 as well
The  disk is already showing up with the partitions as created through node 1
Do I have to create the device file under /dev/dsk/oracle  with the major minor numbers as shown on node 2  for the LUN
    TIA
    Ravinder

Almost never use Solaris (last Oracle db I managed on Solaris was 10 years ago). And as this is not a Solaris o/s forum space, you should not expect quick answers to your Solaris o/s questions (which has little to do with ASM).
A comment though on what needs to be done at o/s level to satisfy RAC/ASM requirements.
ASM does not care for device names. Device names do not need to be persistent before and after reboots. Device names do not need to be persistent across RAC nodes in a cluster.
    ASM simply needs to
    a) be able to discover the device
    b) be able to open the device
This means that the device name needs to match the ASM disk discovery string (or vice versa) across all RAC nodes/ASM instances. And that the device permissions need to allow access read/write access to ASM.
ASM enumerates devices it can I/O using its discovery string. For each device, ASM opens the device. It then reads the ASM disk label of the disk. If there is a valid label, ASM knows the disk name, status, and failgroup and diskgroup this disk belongs to. If no label, ASM treats it  as a candidate disk.
So from an o/s perspective - a cluster LUN/disk needs to be visible on all nodes, in order to use that disk for RAC/grid storage. Actual device name is not important.
So whatever you did on node 1 to make that new LUN available to ASM, you need to do on node 2 and others.
I have 2 bash scripts I feel are essential to managing a RAC. The 1st script enables me to execute a command on all RAC nodes. The 2nd script enables me to copy/distribute a local file to all other RAC nodes.
So using these scripts and dealing with Linux as o/s, I would determine whether the new disk/LUN is seen by all RAC nodes, and whether the permissions are correct for ASM usage.
If not, I will use the 2nd script to distribute the config file(s) needed to configure the other RAC nodes with the same changes (on Linux this typically would be /etc/multipath.conf). And then use the 1st script to enable those changes on all RAC nodes (e.g. by restarting multipathd).
