Moving AW to a new Intel MacBook

Hello
I say, I say, I say, I've just helped my mother-in-law buy a new MacBook. Sadly, as yet there's no punch-line. In the Apple Store we were able to read her existing Appleworks 6 documents on a new intel machine. When I got back to her place I copied the AW (6.2.8) folder off her old lime green G3 iMac onto a USB stick, and into the Apps folder on the new MacBook. But after doubleclicking, the AW icon just jumps a couple of times and then fades again - no AppleWorks.
Am I missing something? How can I transfer the old AW app from her G3 to the new MacBook? If it's a license issue, I still only need one copy - just on the new machine, not the old one. Any thoughts? Having spent several hundred pounds sterling on the new laptop, she's a bit reluctant to spend more on another copy of software she's already got!
Thanks for any input.

Copying the whole AppleWorks 6 folder is the way to transfer it from one Mac to another so there is something else going on.
AppleWorks 6.2.8 is the Classic component of 6.2.9. Just to make sure the AppleWorks application package contains the OS X component, Control- or right-click on the AppleWorks 6 application icon & choose Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. In the Contents folder should be two folders (among others) named MacOSClassic & MacOS. If you don' t have the MacOS folder, you won't be able to run AppleWorks 6 on an Intel Mac. Applying the AppleWorks 6.2.9 updater will probably add it. You can find the most reliable link to the 6.2.9 updater on this page where you can choose the appropriate updater for your AppleWorks 6 installation. Be sure to pay attention to the two English version updaters.
If you do have the MacOS folder in the package Contents, the problem may be simply a matter of using Disk Utility to repair permissions. It would also be a good idea to delete the AppleWorks preferences if they exist (they may not). To delete AppleWorks’ preference files, go to HD > Users > Library > Preferences. Find and delete the file com.apple.appleworks.plist. Find and open the folder AppleWorks in this Preferences folder, then delete all of the enclosed files (with the exception of the Button Bar Preferences if you have customized the Button Bars). AppleWorks will recreate the preference files as it needs them.

  • Safari crashing frequently on new Intel MacBook-

My wife recently got a new Intel MacBook to replace her old G3 iBook. We used the setup/migration assistant to move her files and settings onto the new computer. Everything has been working beautifully with the exception of Safari.
Safari is crashing frequently. The crashes seem to be especially trigged by forum/discussion-board pages. I’ve read through these forums and tried all of the following with no success:
    -- Reset Safari
-- Deleted the Safari preference file.
-- Run all of the system updates.
-- Created a new user account and tried Safari from there.
-- Used Disk Utility to repair permissions.
-- Deleted the Cookies and Cache files in the User Library directory.
-- Attempted to run the 10.4.6 Combo update. (The MacBook won’t let us install it, claiming “This volume does not meet the requirements for this update.” )
-- Used the provided OSX install disks to “upgrade” re-install the system.
...and still no luck. I assume that something bad must have been carried over or introduced with the setup/migration process.
We really, really hope not to have to start everything over from scratch with a complete clean install of OS X. Perhaps someone who understands the crash reports can make some sense out of this and give us some leads on what to try next: (click on links to see several of these crash reports)

The most frequent cause of Safari crashes in the new
intel systems has been Plug-ins that are not
Universal, i.e. not written for the Intel chip. Have
a look in either your Main or User Library>Internet
Plug-in folder for the possible culprit(s).
    Thanks for the quick response!
Actually, we had already tried moving the Internet Plug-Ins plug-in folder to the desktop. (Sorry - I had forgotten to include that in my "things tried" list above.) That didn't seem to fix anything - but we'll try it again. I'll list the items in the plug-in folder in a while.

  • Watching online video on a new Intel-MacBook

I am unable to watch online videos on my new MacBook. The windows media player alarm comes up telling me I don't have the right plug-in. I believe that is the Quicktime component add-on. This still doesn't work. How can watch online video (like cnn.com for example) on my Intel MacBook?

The intel flip4mac beta is no longer available so you can't use it.
Therefore install windows media player from http://www.mactopica.com
You could then force safari to open under rosetta and the windows media plugin should work.

  • OS9 on new intel macbook

I've got a new (realtively) intel macbook and am trying to install/use classic os9.
This article says how to install it, but the instructions don't match the install discs I have.
How do I get this installed? Or is it already installed and I just need to find it?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi, J&R -
As Tom has stated, Apple does not support Classic (OS 9) on any Intel-processor Mac.
However, there is a third-party approach which some folk (not all) have found works good enough for their purposes and software. It's a program called SheepShaver, which can use up to OS 9.0.4 in its environment on Intel-based Macs. You can access a description, how-to, and download links here -

  • New Intel Macbook pro or a PC laptop

Hello everyone. I currently have a 2003 Powerbook G4 Ti 1.0Ghz. It works greate. Now the problem is that I am in the Army and I use lots of military programs that only run on PC's. I have been using Virtual PC 7 to run some of them, but there are some that require a lot of memory and speedlike Falcon View and Performance planning software for Army helicopters. I am also separated from my family and currently use Skipe to do video conference with them. She has a PC laptop. So no Ichat there.
The question is, Are the new Intel laptop able to run Xp and Mac os X at the same time . Is that program Bootcamp really good. Can I start the laptop in Mac to use all my applications and games and then restart in PC mode to work with Pc software or talk to my family?
Do I need an external hardrive to operate in Xp? Or... should (as much as I dont want to) I get a PC laptop.
Also I currently have a lot of Mac applications, are those going to work with the intel chip or I need to get an intel version. Lots of money there.
    Thanks in advance.
    Gonzo

hi you can use bootcamp to start your macbook/macbook pro in windows xp/vista or mac os x. Or you can use a program like parallels which can run osx and windows side by side. AFAIK you don;t need an external hard disk to run windows - bootcamp just creates a virtual partition.
As for the mac ppc applications that you have - some may have intel (universal binary) upgrades or updates. It depends on the programs...some you'll have to pay for others might be free upgrades.
However, i currently use some old mac ppc software on my intel mac and in general it runs fine. I know that programs like photoshop for example do run slower on intel machines than ppc but it's marginal apparently. Basically non-intel software runs on intel mac's in an emulation called Rosetta which automatically enables tha applications to run.
    http://www.parallels.com/
Do check with the relevant software co.'s websites about their products and availability of UB (universal binary) version/updates.
I'd personally recommend a macbook pro. Beautiful machine. runs xp well from what i've seen. runs intel and non-intel mac software well. you can run os x and win xp simultaneously. And by the way, skype exists for mac os x - and it runs great - i talk to my pc friends using it...no problem.
    Hope that helps

  • Making a bootable external drive on a new Intel MacBook

I have a relatively new MacBook Pro (July 07). I was having some problems with the computer freezing up on me so I wanted to look into it and see if I have a drive problem. I have TechTool Protégé. Disk Wizard. Nothing would boot the computer. I can set them as a start up disk in Start up Preferences but all that happens is I get bounced back to my internal hard drive. I tried starting with option key and selecting TechTool and same thing. I looked around and apparently according to Micromat they have not received some needed development disk from Apple to do this. It is not clear to me from the Disk Wizard folks have a disk I can use if I get a problem. DasBoot needs a start up disk from someone else and of course you can not install Tiger to a FireWire drive using the original install disk. Is there any way to make a external startup disk of any kind for disk maintenance program? Disk Utility runs but off the install disk but that is it. Why can you not use the install disk to boot the computer and then run programs off a external disk? I really do not want to ship the computer to Apple and wait for days if a simple disk utility would fix the problem. I an not a happy camper.

Actualy for some reason unknown to me the system install disk puts a big red excermation point over the now empty Firewire drive. Some great new "feature" on the new intel chip set computers! I have in the past installed OS X on various external drives in the past, but this will not let me install. I was hoping for a custom minimal install so I was not thinking Carbon copy cloner. I will look in to that next. Does any one know if you could do this on a USB2 drive?

  • Moving applications from eMac to Intel MacBook?

Hi, I'm going to buy a MacBook soon and I'm wondering if the applications I have on my eMac will transfer (when linked up) to MacBook? Or do they have to be reinstalled from scratched?
Applications are Adobe CS, Microsoft Office, Quark, Macromedia apps etc.
    Any help would be great

Those apps would be better off being reinstalled from their original install CDs/DVDs.

  • Problems sharing an InDesign file between new Intel Mac and PC

I created an InDesign document on my new Intel MacBook using Rosetta I assume, only to find I am unable to open it at work on a PC running Windows. On the PC I get a message that the filename contains one or more unrecognized characters.(Filename was a short five letter word.) It suggests changing the name in Windows, which I tried, but it still will not open. In the past I have effortlessly moved InDesign documents between my old G4 iMac using OS 10.3.9 and the PC. The only difference now is OS 10.4 and the intel based MacBook. Before this problem however, InDesign, which seemed to work fine in Rosetta, had some trouble holding onto fonts. Linked files would turn into gobbledegook that looked like a missing font (font used was Arial, which is a universal font) when the MacBook was shut down for a while, then restarted. Relinking to the original Word file seemed to fix the problem, until the next time I shut down the MacBook, when it recurred. I am tired of rebuilding the same document over and over, and now being unable to open it on the PC where it will be printed from. Must I go back to my older, slower machine to build this document? Or is there something I am missing?

I resolved this myself. The problem turned out to be a file path name error.

    Yes.
Airport Management Tool on Intel Macs
Download the AirPort 4.1 install from here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airport41formacosx.html
    1. Open the .dmg if it did not auto-open.
    2. Control-click "AirPortSW.pkg" and select "Show Package Contents"
    3. Open Contents
    4. Drag Archive.pax.gz to the Desktop
    5. Double-click Archive.pax.gz to unarchive the file
    6. AirPortConfig.framework is in ~/Desktop/Archive/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks
    7. Drag AirPortConfig.framework to /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/
You will be asked to authenticate.
Airport Management Tool should work at this point.

  • Postscript fonts on Intel MacBook Pro

I used a lot of postscript font families on my old Powerbook. Will these font packages function properly with the Intel processor? Do they use Rosetta, or are fonts already "universal" in design? Any problem with Word in particular, which is already a little buggy under Rosetta?
    Thanks!
    MacBook Pro 2Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I have a new Intel MacBook Pro 17" running Tiger 10.4.7 and am pulling my hair out because of the MS Word crashing because of a font problem.
Have already lost countless hours trying to identify the source of the problem when all comes crashing down. Have narrowed it down to Word 2004 and a particular font that is used in ALL my old documents. The font checks OK in several font checking utilities. But Word crashes and brings the whole system down with it when trying to SAVE.
Obviously from past posts this crash does not appear limited to just one particular font or font style. If the problem is truly something in apple system software, I think they need to fix this QUICKLY! Apple.. are you listening!!! WE CAN'T WORK TILL YOU FIX THIS!
    cheers,

  • Intel MacBook Pro and uncompressed video. Does it work???

I'm about to buy a 2nd edit system (currently running dual G5, AJA IO, with FCP 5 and, 3TB of SATA uncompressed storage) I need this next system to be mobile but still do uncompressed video. I see that you can use the AJA IO with the old MacBooks but you need a PCMCIA FW card with dual FW800 drives raided together to do 10bit uncompressed off of Digi Bet or Beta SP. Id there a pcmcia card slot on the new intel macbooks? Is anyone running this setup with success? I need to buy this thin ASAP and have it running soon. Any ideas?

MacBook Pros do not have CardBus slots or PCMCIA Type II. They do have one ExpressCard/34 slot which is, I believe, becoming the new industry standard. Well, ExpressCard is, anyway. It's simply a higher bandwidth expansion card format that uses the PCI Express bus or USB 2.0 for connectivity. It's important to note that the MacBook Pro uses the 34mm form factor (there is also a 54mm form factor). You'll probably have to wait for the hardware you have to support ExpressCard/34.
