Moving Backed Up iTunes Library Back To Newly Formatted Laptop Question.

I've saved all iTunes library files plus music to ext hdd. How do I move everything back so it will be like it was before I moved it? Links to help docs will help.
Thanks

I have the same problem. Seems like APPLE needs to address this issue on its next update, if that's possible.
I got a new, bigger HD and transferred all itunes music files to the new HD. I did a copy paste of all the folders that represented individual CDs. For some reason, I was unable to transfer the entire "iTunes Music folder" that contained all of these "individual CD" folders.
Itunes cannot locate the files on its own. I've already made sure the letter drive is the same. I can locate the files but Itunes cannot.
BUT, Itunes CAN locate files that are MPEG-1 Layer 3 Audio! Itunes cannot locate MPEG-4 Audio Files, many of which are bought CDs that I imported into itunes.
A solution would be super!
Thanks

  • Moved my entire iTunes library to a new PC laptop from an old PC  - iPod won't sync

I recieved a new Dell PC laptop for graduation and wanted to add my normal iTunes library from my old PC desktop. I moved my entire iTunes folder via a 16G flashdrive (in pieces, but accurately - the folder is 43G) to the laptop, and my up-to-date library was restored, play count and all. However, I decided to test out my iPod with the library, which should be the exact same library as before, by syncing a new song to the device. I plugged in my iPod to the computer, which iTunes recognized and acted as though it were syncing, but when I checked my iPod, the song did not show up on the device. It shows up in my iTunes library, but I can't figure out why iTunes won't sync with the device. I made sure that I moved EVERYTHING in the iTunes folder, so it should be recognizing the library as the same exact one as before. Help?!

You can only sync with one iTunes library. To change syncing libraries:
    - Connect the iPod to your computer and make a backup by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up
    - Restore the iPod from that backup.
Note that the backup that iTunes makes does not included synced media like apps and music.

  • Moving an entire iTunes library from PC to Mac

My Dell Inspiron is basically shot right now and I have to move my ENTIRE iTunes library (literally everything; music, music videos, podcasts, and apps for iOS devices) from it to my sister's MacBook Pro before the Dell is completely dead. My music is already on an external drive, but I think everything else (music videos, podcasts, and apps) is on the main hard drive, which I am planning to move to the external drive. I don't want to lose the data on my apps (such as game high scores and saved to-do lists). I don't want to have to restore and re-sync my iDevice as it takes a very long time. I also don't want to lose minor song information such as year, composer, genre, track number, and album artwork. Basically, I want my iTunes library on the MacBook Pro to be exactly like the one I had on the Dell.
How do I go about moving my entire iTunes library with everything intact as smoothly as possible with little or no problems from PC to Mac?

It's important that you copy the xml file inside the iTunes folder on Windows (Documents / Music) along with all your files. Then you have to transfer the iTunes folder into your Mac (usually is located inside the Music folder) and start iTunes. Inside iTunes pref make sure you select the right folder for your music. Another important thing is to have the same iTunes version on Windows and Mac when doing such operations. I hope that helps, bye

  • Moving an entire iTunes Library

I am running iTunes 10 on a MacBook Pro with OS 10.6.8.
My wife has setup her playlists and songs in iTunes, but the songs for the library are located on an external drive due to the large size of the entire music library. She doesn't need ALL of those songs, just the artists/songs she has added to her playlists and iTunes Library in iTunes.
I've tried changing the location of the library via the Preferences pane in iTunes to be on the laptop instead of the external drive, and selected "Keep library organized", but the songs don't actually copy to the hard drive.
Is there a way we can reconfigure this to copy associated songs/artists back to the laptop hard drive so she doesn't have to plugin the external drive every time she wants to hear some music?... or do we have to just copy artists manually and reassociate everything?
    Thanks for any help!
    Shane

    Kappy,
The external iTunes/ folder is about 75GB too large for the laptop hard drive... Much of the music on the external drive is NOT present in her laptop Music Library (she added only the music she wanted from the external, but specified the external disc as the library location).
Is there a way you can tell iTunes to move the music that HAS been added to her Playlists and Music Library over to the laptop drive from the external?
Otherwise, I fear it will be a matter of matching artist, by artist which folders need to be copied.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks for your input.

  • HT1589 I have moved (consolidated) my iTunes Library to my external drive.  Can I now erase the Library that resides in my Mac hardrive?  It is occupying valuable space.

I have a new external drive that I moved my iTunes Library into.  Can I now delete that Library in my computer (Mac) drive?  How do I do this.  I need more space in my computer.

Yes, assuming you've confirmed that consolidation has been successful. Might be a good idea to rename the old iTunes Media or iTunes Music folder on your internal drive as Old Media and test a few things before finally deleting it.
Note that splitting up your library like this will make it harder to transfer to a new/restored system in future. Before you get to that point you might want to review my post on making a split library portable. You should also invest in a second external drive so that you can make a secondary backup copy of your library.

  • Trying to copy across my iTunes library to my newly wiped MacBook but all songs greyed out and iTunes folder now 0bytes...

I'm worried I have copied the files from the MacBook before wiping incorrectly! Can anyone please advise?

I use an older operating system version and do not fully understand the view you have.  It doesn't look like a standard iTunes folders structure to me:

If you do have a complete library set as per all the links I provided above, here's how you move it:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) so you get a prompt to select a library, then guide it to the 'iTunes Library.itl' file in the moved iTunes folder.
If you put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music  then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there.  (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)

  • Moving CDs from iTunes Library to iPhone 4

I have CDs in my iTunes library, but cannot transfer them to my iPhone.  I don't know why.  I have a new MacBook Pro, and I don't know if this has anything to do with it or not.  I am able to put the CDs on an old iPod Nano I have but not on my iPhone 4.

I cannot move a newly purchased song to either my iPod or iPhone. I have been loading up my iPod for years (different iPods, but same procedure) and now I cannot. I have playlists set up but cannot move the music to MY playlists. I did this successfully as recently as three weeks ago. I feel I have tried just about everything. What am I missing?

  • Moving songs from iTunes library to my documents

Hello. A friend wants me to transfer some songs in my iTunes library to their MP3 player (not an ipod). Is this possible and if so how?

Iphone will sync or manually manage with one and only one computer at a time.
Syncing or manually managing to another will indeed erase the current content and replace with the content from the new computer.

  • One iTunes library for multiple accounts, iPhones, laptops and PCs.

First off, I'll apologize up front for asking a question that has probably been asked a million times. I've searched the intarwebs and these forums but I've seen so many different answers and read so many different threads pertaining to my question that I think I've over-informed myself to the point of confusion.
OK, for the longest time I've had one iTunes library running on one Windows PC in my house. I used that for updating all our iPods. That was fine for the last however-many-years we've had iPods.
We just picked-up a couple iPhones last night.
All I want to do is move the iTunes library to our NAS so that we can both access the library from any laptop or PC in order to update the music on our iPhones using our different accounts.
Is there a definitive way to do this, or do I have to follow one of these sideways, shady and round-about ways to get this done.
Having to run upstairs to the PC seems to be completely needless with all this technology we have!
    Any help would be appreciated.

After reading this and several other related threads, I am becoming thoroughly confused about all of this. I have a situation similar to the one that pokerpal described in the post dated January 7 at 8:06 pm, except that the music files on my system are located on an external hard drive. Everything else is pretty much the same though - I am the admin user (and the main iTunes user and maintainer) and my girlfriend is a standard user who has no music in her own iTunes library. She can see and listen to and make playlists from and sync her iPod with the music in this library from her account, and I can do the same thing, independent of her, from my account. And if I make a change to information within a song, she doesn't see it, and vice versa, and I understand that. What I don't understand is why when I add a song or an album to the music files by importing a CD or downloading something from the iTunes Music Store, she has no way of knowing that unless I tell her, and then she can add it to her library by using the "Add to Library" function. Is there no way of automatically updating her library files to add the new song(s)? We have almost 15,000 songs and videos in that library, and I don't even want to think about what might have to happen if the answer to my question is "no." Interestingly enough, if I put an update to a Word document in the same exact location (on the hard drive), we can update that and pass it back and forth all day - why is that such a difficult task for iTunes to accomplish?
Sorry I went on so long, but this has been building up for some time, and none of the solutions I've read about here have really been of any help, so I'm a bit frustrated and, as I said at the beginning, confused.

  • Transferring/Copying iTunes library from desktop computer to laptop

What is the best way to move my current desktop iTunes library to my laptop?
I have the latest version of iTunes on the laptop, which has moved music from it to iTunes. There are about 50 songs on this laptop library, but on my desktop computer there is much more.

  • ITunes on XP PC won't recognize iTunes Library from Macbook or PC Laptop

I have 3 computers on my network. The main PC is a desktop running XP, and I have 2 laptops; a Gateway PC running Vista and a 15" Macbook Pro running OS X. With all 3 machines powered on and iTunes open in all of them, the desktop PC no longer recognizes the iTunes Libraries from either laptop, but each laptop recognizes each other as well as the desktop. Any suggestions as to what I've done? This is a new problem as they all three used to recognize each other.

    Hello Jenn
Check out the article below to go through a recreate your iTunes library. You can do it one of two different ways. One is just drag the media on top of iTunes and the import process will go through. The second is if the structure is the same, you could just copy the iTunes folder to the Music folder of your computer and it should open up like before. The article below will assist with those process in more detail.
