Moving backups from fw-disk to network

I have been running my backups to a firewire disk, but I have want to make backups to a remote AFP share.
So how to I convert my old backups from the fw-disk to a sparsebundle on the server?

I have created a DMG image of my FW-disk, but now I need to convert the DMG file to a .sparsebundle file..
How do I convert it?

How can I safely move previous Time Machine backups from a USB connected external drive to a Network connected Western Digital hard drive, after I have performed a full backup to the new drive?

Here is where you should be able to find that answer from our expert TM user:

  • Want to move TM backup from USB drive to network drive

[I tried searching and didn't see anything specific to my question.]
I have a Mac Mini backup up to an external USB hard drive and it has a history going back 7 months. It backs up to a folder Backups.backupdb. This folder resides w/ the rest of my folders on this USB HDD, it is not on it's own partition.
Now I want to 'move' this backup and history to a network drive (not a Time Capsule). I've seen methods to use Disk Utility to restore it to new drive or use Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper. (I'm familiar w/ all 3 programs btw.) However, all those methods require mounting a HDD (or partition). I can't seem to figure how to use that method to mount the backups.backupdb.
    Any ideas?

Anything you found would have said you can't do that.
When TM does network backups, it puts them in a sparse bundle, not the "normal" folder named Backups.backupdb. You cannot continue network backups in the same "sequence." Even if TM works to your network drive (which is not officially supported), it will start a whole new set of backups in a sparse bundle.
And you can't copy the Backups.backupdb folder with the Leopard Finder anyway. See #18 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip* at the top of this forum.

  • Can't restore tm backup from external disk

    Hi
    I need some help please.
I have a 2T seagate sata drive, which I had installed as an internal drive in my mac pro. this is my time machine backup drive for the other internal discs, which are installed as software raid 0
So the 2T Seagate backs up the raid. worked nicely.
Now I bought an enclosure and installed that very same 2T Seagate as an external FW drive to make room inside the macpro for one more disc.
Now I am having the problem, that I can't restore the files from my tm back drive back to my internal drives.
When i use time machine itself to restore, it only creates the top folder but never restores any files.
I tried drag and drop of folders using finder, and it gives me the error "don't have permission".
I can't restore my own backup! I can see the folders and files on the backup drive, so everything seems to be there.
    any help highly appreciated
    thanks

The only way I was able to save my backup was to use a terminal and copy the entire last backup to a different local disc.
    cp -R /volumes/backup ./
    this copies the entire structure
at least i got my files back.

  • Moving a Time Machine backup from a directly connected external disk to that disk on OSX Server

I have an iMac that has been using an external drive for Time Machine (TM) backups since 2013, so there is a lot of history in the backups.  I now have a Mac Mini running OS X Server, and would like to transfer the drive to the Mac Mini, but continue to use the drive as the backup disk, that is, doing TM backups via the TM service on the server.   However, if I simply stop TM on the iMac, disconnect the drive, connect it to the Mac Mini, tell OS X Server to use the drive as a backup disk, and tell TM on the iMac to use the Server TM service, it seems that a new backup file is started, rather than continuing to use the old one (symptom: when I enter TM on the iMac, I don't see any of the previous incremental backups).
Is there a way to persuade OSX server to continue to use the old backup file, rather than start anew, losing my history?
Both the Mac Mini and the iMac are running Mavericks and the Mac mini is running the latest version of OSX Server.
    thanks

What you are attempting is complex, and I am not certain whether it would be successful. I recommend you buy a new drive and start a new backup today, and set the old drive aside.
I have a somewhat different view of the benefits of what you are calling "History". I think that History just adds complexity to the Backup structure that makes it LESS likely you will be able to do a Restore. And Backups are only as good as their ability to do a proper Restore.
Copies of the currently-present files is all that Time Machine promises to keep -- older files that have been removed from the current source are not necessarily maintained on the Backup. In my opinion, a fresh, clean Backup from today is more likely to be able to Restore the things you need most -- without any error messages.
The most requested Restores are things Users broke or discarded today or yesterday, and those will be readily available tomorrow and going forward. In the event you need some really old copies of something, you can try to get them off the old Backup drive you set aside today.

  • How to take Auto backup from External Network Drive to Mac pro internal Dri

    Hi,
I have a External Network Drive (Buffalo 1TB) which i use as a server, now i need to take auto backup from that external drive to the Mac i am working on, which has 2TB Internal hard Disk.
Please could anyone help me on this.....
    Thanks in advance

If you are looking to actually integrate what you have on the external one terabyte hard drive with the 2 TB hard drive you're using inside the Mac the best move for you if you want access to that data when using the Mac Pro server is going into utilities click on the top bar where it says go fall that down to the utilities told them that folder quickly once you are there you will see migration assistant click on that you will be asked to type your admin password to that. It will ask you "how do you want to transfer your information" then select from a Time machine backup or other disk when it asks you will be transferring information to your Mac Pro from your 1 Tb backup external hard drive once it's finished eject the drive or reformat it and use it again if your objective was to infect keep compress the data on the external so you have more space but do not have access to it I strongly recommend Carbon Copy Clone 3.3.1 is 100% free and does a fantastic job here is the link http://www.pure-mac.com/downloads/carboncopyclonerdl.html of copying every block to create an exact replica of your source hard drive. If you want something different and don't mind paying SuperDuper! is a great product as well this WebSite will have many options I would stick to carbon copy clone http://www.pure-mac.com/backup.html I also like EMC Retrospect backup and recovery software for the Mac it is a great product but very much on the expensive side for backup utilities although if you need word offers this might be right up your alley.
    I hope I wasn't help,
    Sincerely,
    Thomas

  • Copying or moving video from your Event Library to an external hard disk

I have a Network Drive where I'm used to putted all my iMovie08 files.
I'm start using iMovie09 and i'm no longer able to have my *files/library in a network drive*. Did apple remove this functionality? If this is true this is unbelievable because now a days everything goes to network storage. On iTunes i can have my library virtually anywhere. I need to have the same behavior when i'm using iMovie.
    Can someone help me?
    with my best regards,
    Paulo

Copying or moving video from your Event Library to an external hard disk
If you want to save space on your computer’s hard disk, you can move your stored video in your Event Library to a compatible external hard disk connected to your computer with a FireWire or USB 2.0 cable.
You can also copy Events to another hard disk. You might do this, for example, if you want to create a duplicate copy of your video library or an Event on a friend’s hard disk.
NOTE:When using an external hard disk with iMovie, make sure it has been formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    - If i understood correctly, the solution you propose will replace completely my hard disk library with NAS location.
    - What i need (because when i'm travelling i dont have my NAS) is to have both. My hard disk library and the ability to copy/move (drag & drop within iMovies09 ) events and projects to my NAS at my description as i use to do on iMovies08.
And yes all my NAS locations appears with and yellow flag on iMovies09.
    best regards,
    Paulo

  • I need to uninstall downloaded version of Elements 12 on a computer, then install Elements 12 on the same computer directly from a disk. Elements 11 was previously used on same computer, and the albums and library had been moved to the first installation

I need to uninstall downloaded version of Elements 12 on a computer, then install Elements 12 on the same computer directly from a disk. Elements 11 was previously used on same computer, and the albums and library had been moved to the first installation of 12, which I am removing. How do I correctly unstall the old Elements 12, and install the new elements 12 from disk, and retain all albums and libraries from the old Elements 12?

You're welcome.  It was not an answer, it was a question, and it could lead to being helpful if you explain why you think you need to uninstall.
As far as uninstalling goes, you will uninstall it like you do for any program, which depends on what kind of operating system you have.  If you wish to retain albums and whatnot, maybe the following link can provide some guidance.

  • Moving Time Machine Drive from Direct Connect to Network Share

I have a 1 TB external USB 2 drive I use for my Time Machine backup. I'd like to move that drive to a file server and continue backing up to it. The problem appears to be that when backing up to the drive as a network volume, Time Machine wants to create a new sparsebundle for the backup and not use the existing TM backup folder on the drive.
Is it possible to migrate a Time Machine drive from direct connect to network while preserving the backed up data? Thanks!

Depending on what "file server" you're using, that may or may not work reliably. Here's the criteria they must meet: Disks that can be used with Time Machine. And be careful here: just because some 3rd-party hardware claims to support Time Machine doesn't necessarily mean that Apple supports it, or that it will work in all circumstances.

  • Moving backup files from iBook to Powerbook-OSX 10.4.11

In a previous discussion I asked about my crashed iBook and got good info: not good news, though, for the iBook since I had to replace it with a used 12' OSX 10.4.11 Powerbook--a very nice little machine that runs just like the iBook but faster.  A few years ago, I got a Seagate external drive and have regularly backed up the whole hard drive, though not in the past 6 months, so I do have useable files to do a backup.  (Since the iBook is now history, I don't know what I used to do the backup--maybe the Disk Utility, maybe CCC.)
I've opened the Seagate drive on the Powerbook, looked in all the folders and found my photos, iTunes, documents, desktop folders: looks like everything is there.  Now what can I do with it?  I was thinking of drag and drop for the desktop folders but not sure about the iLife app's.  My iBook had iLife 4 loaded but the Powerbook is running iLife 6, so the iPhoto and iTunes look a little different.  Actually, I think I have been updating the iTunes app as the updates came thru, maybe up to iTunes 9...
So I am not sure what to do now, in order to move all my data from the iBook backup to the 'new' Powerbook.  The OSX 10.4.11 matches on both laptops except for the updated iLife app's, and I do not want to lose these updated app's.  Is it possible to replace maybe some app's, like Safari, and just drag and drop some folders, like all the Desktop folders.  I don't want to just ram the data over, and then find I've lost the use of the Powerbook altogether.  Should I partition the Powerbook drive and move the old stuff over, then try to run it?  Or.....?  The user manuals are not too useful for these issues, but this community is the place to bring one's questions.

    hey dalstgott:
Well, an update: the desktop folders moved very easily while my photos took a bit more work.  I was able to move most of them by opening iPhoto and clicking File>Import to Library... and then selecting each album from the outboard drive.  I did have to move a few manually as the auto move failed.  Looking at the data behind each photo showed that time and dat stamp plus exposure info did move.  There were at least two folders associated with each album that I couldn't move, nor could I open them...guess I didn't need them.
Now I'll try with iTunes, although along with the iTunes Music files themselves (mp3's I think) but there are eleven other files like: Album Artwork,  iTunes Library, iTunes Library Extras.itdb, @2011-05-20t22;02;46.itdb, Mobile Applications; Previous iTunes Libraries.  I tried to copy the list but couldn't do a screenshot of the list.  I'm afraid that there is some data in the other files that may be needed to play the mp3's but I'll give the move a try and see what happens.    Will update soon.....

  • Moving backups to new drive -- without using disk utility restore

    Hello,
I have done some research on this already but I don't believe I've found the solution. I just bought a new media / backup hard drive, and I've moved my itunes library (over 100 GBs) to this drive. Now I have researched how to move the time machine backups to this drive, and know you can't just copy the files.
The instructions I've received tell me to use the disk utility to restore the old time machine backup drive to the new drive, however if I do that won't I lose the iTunes stuff currently on that drive?
Is there an easier way to move that data without me transferring the iTunes back to my laptop, and then restoring through disk utility, and then re-transferring the iTunes again?
    thanks,
    James

yes, you will. but it is also a VERY bad idea to keep other data on the same partition as the TM backup. first, this data will not be backed up by TM. if you value your itunes data you should have it backed up. also, TM is very buggy and there are too many situations when you need to delete existing TM backups and start from scratch. this should be done by erasing the entire TM partition. you should never delete any TM backups from finder. also, TM will eventually fill up the entire partition with TM backup. it will start bumping up against other data on the partition and you won't be able to put anything else on it.
the upshot is that you should make a separate partition just for TM. don't keep any other data on that partition. you can add a partition to the drive without disturbing your itunes data. type "create new volumes" in disk utility help to see how. however, that's not a good idea IMO as you'll have both the itunes data and the TM backups on the same physical drive. when the drive fails (and it will eventually) you'll loose everything.
Is there an easier way to move that data without me transferring the iTunes back to my laptop, and then restoring through disk utility, and then re-transferring the iTunes again?

  • How to connect my new MacBook Air to a LaCie hard disk with TIme Capsule backup from my old Imac? LaCie has USB 2.0, FireWire and eSata ports.

How can I connect my new MacBook Air to a LaCie hard disk with TIme Capsule backup from my old Imac? LaCie has USB 2.0, FireWire and eSata ports.

You can direct connect your MBA to the LaCie via USB 2 cable.  If you have an Apple Airport Router you can USB connect the LaCie drive to the router and then use Airport Utility to configure it.  Time Machine can access it either way.

    Change here:

You must have a verified billing address & be located in the country whose store you are trying to use.

  • Time Machine backup not working from startup disk

So, in an attempt to make BootCamp work, I erased my hard drive (as instructed) after first backing up with Time Machine. Now trying to restore from the Time Machine drive, after starting up from install disk, and nothing happens. Disk Utility works when I open that from Utilities, but when I try to open "Restore System from backup..." nothing happens.
    Any clues?

nothing at all? that can only mean you have a problem with your install DVD. nothing can be done about that. what kind of DVD is it? is it the install disk that came with your computer? if so you can try asking apple for a replacement dvd. another option would be to do a fresh install of leopard and them use migration assistant during the original computer setup (you'll be given that option) to import your data and applications from the TM backup.
