Moving between Extreme Base Station and Express Base Stations with Mac & PC

I just bought an Airport Express and connected it as an extension to my Airport Extreme Base station. All firmware has been updated as of today. I have things configured such that the Extreme is WEP but allowing for extension and the Express is working. My Macbook appears to be connecting to the Express now but it seems like I have to use the Utility to select either the Express or Extreme base station manually as opposed to having it just go to the strongest source automatically. Maybe I made an assumption that it worked like an access point. Moreover, the laptop PCs in the house are not making the jump to the Express at all. I can install the Utility on one of them and probably manually make the change but the other is a Corporate PC that is 'locked down.' And of course that is the one that I want to be able to use around the house.
Does anyone know if:
1. There is an ability to bounce between the Extreme and Express like access points on the Mac and the PC
2. Is there a way to configure a PC to use the Express or the Extreme without the Utility (i.e., if I setup the Express with a different Network name)
The key issue is that I do not have the ability to run an ethernet between the two base stations - they can only connect wirelessly.
Thanks for your help!

cosmomurphy, Welcome to the discussion area!
Do you have the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) configured as a WDS main and the AirPort Express (AX) as a WDS remote?
Or are they both 802.11n capable and the AEBS is configured to have the extend network feature is enabled and the AX configured to act as an extension?
In either of those cases, they are working together as one big wireless network. In that situation, any client will connect to the base station which appears to be the "best" connection for them.
There is no need to install the AirPort Utility on any device. Any device with 802.11b/g/n wireless ability can connect to the network.

  • HOW do I get my Extreme base station and Express to join a Linksys network?

OK... so I have FINALLY enabled my SLINGBOX to view remotely by totally removing my Airport Extreme & Express from the network look. I was told they are both routers and I have to pick one. The Linksys network works fine for all networking purposes... what it WON'T DO is connect my USB printer or stream iTunes to remote speakers. NOW, I have been told by using the Extreme & Express in "client mode" I can do this.
Basically HOW do I get my Extreme base station and Express to join the exsiting Linksys network?

Sorry but the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) does NOT have a client mode.
The AirPort Express (AX) does have a client mode. The directions are in KB 302153, AirPort Express: How to join an existing wireless network in client mode.

  • Base Station and Express not seen by computers..

Hello -- I have a (new) Extreme Base Station, an older (round) Base Station and two Expresses. I set up the Extreme (new) BS successfully. I hard-reset the other three and, one by one, connected them to the BS and set them up to join my closed network, all devices set to the same channel. All devices are then seen by the Airport Utility on my MacPro (we'll call it MacPro #1), where the Extreme Base Station is connected to the cable modem. I have another MacPro elsewhere in my house where I connect that MacPro via Ethernet cable to the AE -- BUT the Airport Utility on that MacPro (#2) DOESN'T see the 'main Base Station and it doesn't see the AE that it is connected to; in fact it doesn't see ANY of the four devices at all. (I have 2 laptops, a MacBook Pro and an iBook; both of them get online via Airport from our network using the Base Station..) Anybody know what's wrong here?.. Thank you very much!
    - Nick

I guess no takers.... but, I ended up solving it: Even though I had already set up the second Base Station once (to join my already-existing network), I went & set it up again, and this time both of my Mac Pro's could see all Base Stations and Expresses, and I could get online everywhere. Gonna turn everything on & check it again this morning, but it seems that my problem is solved. I can cancel my Genius Bar app't.

how can i turn down the fan rpm that's between the optical drive and hdd in my power mac g5 dual 2.3?

Ok, I saw that error in your logic. A Dual G5 2.3 or even a Dual Core 2.3 does NOT use LCS at all. Its air cooled and if anything if the OP is experiencing this problems could be due to possible heatsink paste drying up. He might have to re-apply MX 7 or Arctic Silver.
The only G5's that use LCS are: G5 dual 2.5 from Late 2004, the G5 Dual 2.7 from Early 2005, and lastly the G5 Quad-Core from Late 2005-end of September 2006.
    Hope this helps.

Do I need to run and anti virus program with MAC OSX Lion? Have heard different opinions!
You will continue to hear different opinions here, where thoughts range everywhere between "anti-virus software is the evil spawn of Satan" to "anyone not running anti-virus software is a fool."
Truth is, this is still a very personal decision on a Mac. Depending on circumstances, it is still very easily possible to stay safe without using anti-virus software, but circumstances and personal preferences vary widely. Besides which, anti-virus software cannot even remotely provide you a guarantee of protection!

  • Is there a known conflict between an extreme g base station and express n in a roaming network?

I have an extreme g base station connected to a cable modem, an express g connected to a linksys switch via ethernet, and an express n connected to the same switch via Ethernet. The switch is connected to the extreme g base station by Ethernet as well. They are all set up to be a roaming network with 128 bit WEP security. I made two changes to the network recently. I went from a WDS setup with the extreme g and express g, which was generally stable but slow, to the roaming setup above, and I added the express n. Now something is causing the network to loose connectivity at least once a day, requiring a restart of the extreme g. My hunch is the express n is causing problems for the older g units.
Does anyone know if this is a known problem and if there is a solution?
    Thanks.

    For what its worth.....
I have mixed older "b/g" and newer "n" devices in "extended" and "roaming" networks for years, and have never experienced any issues with this type of setup.
As a Community Support "regular", I can say that I cannot recall having seen the type of issue that you have described, but other users may comment with different opinions.

  • Trouble with Extreme N base station and Express station wireless

Upgraded extreme base station with new extreme "N" base station. Currently have the extreme "N" base station connected to cable modem on 2nd floor. I have wired the house to have the demarc on the 2nd floor. I purchased the express base station to be placed on 1st floor to extend the wireless range from the extreme "N" base station.
Prior to this setup, I had a wired bridge on the 1st floor to the main router on the 2nd floor. I was able to connect all wireless connections to the bridge where there was weak signal to the main router on 2nd floor.
The trouble I am having is that whether I have the express base connected or not. My signal is near the same as having only the main base station on 2nd floor. I can be seated right next to the express on the 1st floor and have only 1-2 bars on the signal.
I have updated and running the latest utilities for the airports. I have also been seeing the same trouble with other Mac's and PC's.
Also, I have been noticing the extreme "N" base station blinking amber when no Mac's or PC's are accessing the network or even when they are.
So, even when both the extreme and express have solid green LED, I still have the problem.
I am not sure if I am setting up this incorrectly or if I have hit a brickwall with this setup in my house.
Could I hard wire the express from the extreme from the second floor as I did with the bridge I use to have? I am not sure if the express would work as a wired bridge.
Just appears to be performing less then my prior PC networking products.
Thanks everyone...hope to get some insight. I have read all the prior discussions and still not getting good results.

    Tesserax....Thanks for the quick clarification on using the expresss as a wired bridge. I did avert back to a wired bridge now using all apple products. I was trying to get away with reusing the hard wire from the base station since I was running out of ports on the base station. {Apple has to be difficult with only having 3 ethernet ports.}
So I had to run a linksys switch off the extreme "N" base station.
    Thanks again..
Guess I have to live with the quirks...

  • Airport Extreme base station no longer playing nice with Mac Pro

    This is a strange problem...
I have an Airport Extreme base station (purchased in 2004) that I use with verizon DSL to get a wireless network going in my house, and I connect three computers wirelessly.
I have an ipod touch and toshiba PC laptop that are both able to connect to the network and run just fine. But lately (past 2 weeks or so) when I try to connect with my MacPro desktop I can go to a few sites, but after a few minutes the airport locks up. At that point none of my computers will connect and I have to unplug and then replug the airport. At that point the network will start up again and if I do not try to get on with Mac Pro then things run fine, but when I try to connect with desktop again, after another few minutes the same thing happens.
I know the problem is with the airport and my Mac Pro - I have done numerous connection experiments and have narrowed the problem down to that.
Is it possible that my MacPro might be drawing more power and causing the airport to overheat? (it is rather hot in the room with DSL connection)
Or should I accept that the current base it old, and bite the bullet and get a new base?
    Any thoughts?

Could you post what you did in order to resolve the issue. I'm having a problem with the base station in that I cannot connect to the internet with my laptops (a mac and pc) while I can connect wirelessly to my network with my desktop (G4). The base station is not detected in the base statin admin utility or the aiport setup utility. If anyone else has a solution I would be much obliged to read it.
    Thanks!

  • Airport Extreme and Express not working with Leopard

Both Exreme and Express appeared on Disk Utilty as "green" and worked with Tiger, after I installed new OS Leopard neither appears and cannot connect wirelessly.
    What's up? TOM

Although the Upgrade path is touted as the "simplest" if may be the most troublesome if your Mac had a lot of third-party applications running on it prior to upgrading. Unfortunately, it's too early to offer much advise on what may have gone wrong with your AirPort connectivity. My guess, at this time, is that you may have some corrupted AirPort configuration files in your System folder.
Do you, by chance, have a clone backup of your previous disk? If so, it might be worth the trouble to return your Mac to its previous configuration, and then, try upgrading using the "Archive and Install" method. This will ensure a "clean" copy of Leopard, and just transition your user settings as appropriate. You may also want to post in the new Leopard Discussions area as well.

  • Moved to USA from Australia and I need help with my iTunes account.

Okay so I moved to USA from Australia and I changed my address and all that for the account but when I open iTunes it say that my account isn't valid for use in the United States. So I look into it and it says I need to have no credit left over to change my account from Aus to USA.
Okay so my question is how do I use 15 cents in the iTunes Store so I can change my iTunes so it works, does any one have any suggestions.

You can contact iTunes Store support and ask them to remove it - http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/  that is, agree to forfeit it and they can remove it.
Or, buy something, and pay for the remainder of the balance with a credit card (if you still have one in Australia you can use?).

  • What is the diff between SAP Netweaver B1i and B1i that comes with SBO 2007

    Hi
There is SAP Netweaver B1i which is used for integration with SAP R3. But when you get SBO 2007 it also comes with B1i. Is there a difference or is it the same tool??
    Thank you for your time.

    Louis,
B1i on the SAP Business One 2007A Preview release is the same as B1i 2005A as far as what it is and how it works with relation to integrating SAP Business One and R/3.  There are new features that are part of B1i 2007A of course that are not in 2005A such as integration with SAP BW, an updated Control Center as well as some other features such as the installation and upgrade routines.  You should have a look at the documentation in the ..\Documentation folder and specifically in the "Integration" and "PEP" folders on the preview media.  This is also, as mentioned, the PREVIEW version, so there will be updates to it forth coming before general release.

  • Airport Extreme 802.11 n Wi-Fi compatible with Mac OS Tiger?

I want to create a home network connecting a mini mac, PCs, Iphone and an external hard drive shared by computer units.
I have a stationary PC and one laptop, both running windows XP. I also have a mini Mac running Mac OS Tiger (I think 10.4.8) and another laptop running Vista. I also have an IPhone.
I have bought a Western Digital My Book Essential 1.5 TB and a Airport Extreme 802.11n Wi-Fi base station.
The idea is to connect the external drive to the Airport Extreme in order to share the drive.
    Question 1:
I ran into some problems. When trying to install the setup software for the Airport Extreme I get the message that Mac OS 10.5.x is required as minimum. Even if the sales person and the store home page states Mac Tiger as minimum requirements. I have not found any other way to set up the Airpot Extreme. Do I have to upgrade to Snow Leopard (which I will do eventually but I had counted on getting it to work before that)? Or is there another way to make it work?
    Question 2:
I have very modern fiber broadband into our house. I therefor have a Router connected to the WAN and all units connected to the Ethernet connections. I do not want to use the Airport Extreme as the incoming Router since I want to place it somewhere else (connecting the Hard drive to it). How do I connect the Airport Extreme to the current pysical network? Should I connect a cable from one the Router ethernet connectsions to a) the WAN port of the Airport Extreme or b) to the Ethernet port? Put in another way, can i use the Airport Extreme as a switch in the existing network only using the Ethernet ports and not using the Airport Extreme WAN port? I am not familiar with all network terms such as switch, pure bridge mode, router bridget etc.
I am considering connecting the network as follows
    Internet-> Broadband supplier delivered Router -> A, B, C (ethernet ports)
    A->Mini Mac
    B-> Play stattion 3
C-> Airport Extreme (to what port???)
Airport extreme-> PC , Printer (ethternet ports), external drive (USB port)
AGain, what ports should i use for the airport extreme?
    Is this a good setup?

Hello dayknight. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I ran into some problems. When trying to install the setup software for the Airport Extreme I get the message that Mac OS 10.5.x is required as minimum. Even if the sales person and the store home page states Mac Tiger as minimum requirements.
The very latest versions of the AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule come with v5.5 of the AirPort Utility. This version will only run with OS X v5.7 or later as stated on the box. So either Leopard or Snow Leopard will be required to do so. The version that came with the previous model DID work with Tiger. Sorry!

You will want to connect an Ethernet cable from this other router to the WAN (circle-of-dots) port on your new 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn). In addition, you will want to reconfigure the AEBSn as a bridge. You would do this using the AirPort Utility. (ref: AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > Internet > Internet Connection > Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)). Of course, they would be difficult unless you upgrade to Leopard or Snow Leopard first. If; however, you have a PC with Windows XP or Vista, you could load the AirPort Utility on it to do the base station administration until such time you update your Mac.
Finally, your proposed network configuration looks workable.

  • Partitioning and Installing Windows 7 with Mac OS X Lion

    Hi
after failing seriously with the partitioning after installing Win 7, I hope that I will find some help from the scratch...
I want to install OS X Lion with Win 7.
3 Partitions with Mac are needed and 1 fro Windows.
I got 750Gb on my Mac Book Pro.
    Disk should look like this:
    100Gb Main Partition (Mac)
    200Gb Documents Partition (Mac)
    300Gb Stuff and Games (Mac)
    150Gb Windows 7 Partition
I tried now to create a 100Gb Partition for Mac and a 150Gb Partition for Windows 7.
After Installing the Mac OS, I was trying to add the 2 other Partitions, but it already telling me that i'm gonna loose my Windows Boot when I change the Partitions. I pressed ok and restarted with the windows 7 DVD for the recovery, which wasn't working due to version incompability -.- (I installed Windows from that DVD)
What steps should I make to get this to work? Some guys says that it not gonna work, but a friend of min has 3 mac partitions and a windows. Sadly he can't remember the way to this setup
    Thank you for the help
