Moving Catalogs from XP Pro to Win 7 on a new pc

Here's what I wish to do. [ I apologize for all of the detail that follows, but I am trying to be careful with this.]
I want to move my PSE 8 catalog, and all of my pictures,  from my old to my new pc.  The old pc has XP Pro, the new one uses Windows 7. PSE 8 is on both machines.
Here's what I've done.  Using the Easy Transfer s/w I've moved all of my Documents files from one pc to the other.  This included the My Pictures folder, so now all of my photos (some 28,000), and some videos are on the new pc.  I installed PSE 8 on the new pc with the orginal disk.  It seems to be working fine.  I copied the catalog files on the old pc onto a thumb drive and installed that on the new pc.  That did not enable me to restore the catalog, however.  I now realize that I should have used the Backup Catalog command to backup the existing catalogs on my old pc and move that.  I have done that by backing up to an external hard drive.
Before I move the hard drive to my new pc and click on the Restore Catalog button, I thought I'd ask: should I delete the photo files that I have already transferred to the Pictures file on my new pc?  When I use the Restore Catalog function on the new machine, does it also transfer all of my photos?  I can't seem to find a clear statement of that anywhere.  If it does, then it seems obvious that I will need to delete all of the recently moved photos before I do the Restore catalog routine on my new pc. Otherwise I would wind up with two of everything.
Thanks to any and everyone who helps me through what seems like a big problem, but probably isn't (I hope).

That was good advice, thank you dj.  However, and it always seems that there is a however, I was really trying to move 2 catalogs that I had on my old pc in PSE 8..
I backed them both up to an external hard drive, deleted all of the files from my new pc, and then went to the external hard drive and hit the Restore Catalog button. I also established a new Catalog for the second catalog that I was attemting to restore.  One loaded nicely and then the other, BUT, the second RESTORE apparently deleted the first!  I've done this twice now, with the same results, even switching which one loaded first.  What am I doing wrong?
Also, when it does load into the PICTURES library on Win 7 it loads a staggering number of folders and files on top on the final folder where the actual pictures are stored.  What a pain to drill down to the actual folders where the pictures are.  Anyone know of any harm in moving them up several layers in the folder structure?  I even used the Restore option New Location/Restore Original Folder Structure option.  It apparently has kept the original structures but it did load a whole pile of folders on top of the pictures.
Many thanks once again for your guidance and support.

  • Moving catalog from Lr 3.6 to Lr 5.6

Hi all. This is my first post here, after joining Creative Cloud and start using Lr 5.6.
My catalog is about 1Tb and right now is in an external RAID system (WD) and I'm working with a MacBookPro and a NEC Spectraview Reference 2690.
I started using Lr 5.6 with some test catalogs and everything seems to be OK.
My question is : Should I take any specific action before moving my catalog from 3.6 to 5.6??
I remember when I moved from Lr2 to Lr3 that i did some optimization and other actions before importing the catalog to Lr3, but right now I'm not able to remember.........
Any advice from you before such a huge amount of photos will be really appreciated.
    Best,

When you open a lower version catalog in a newer version of Lightroom it will covert the catalog and preserve the older version.
There are no special steps to take.
A catalog can be optimized at any time upon shutdown or launch.

  • Moving catalog from 10 to 11

I have installed Elements 11 and converted the catalog from Elements 10, but when I open Elements 11 organizer, my pictures don't show up. How do I find them and get them to open in the version sets and stacks I already have?

Are you saying that the thumbnails ahvenot generated as yet? Do you see a wait cursor on bottom status bar, hovering which you see "Gnerating Thumbnails"?
If you are seeing no photos at all but atgs/albums etc are visible from previous version catalog, go to View menu>Media Types. See if Photos is checked or not.
Let me know if that helps!

  • Moving iPhone4 from WinXP Pro to Windows 8.1

I'm finally getting around to converting my computers from WinXP Pro to Windows 8.1.  I am wondering if there is a tried and true method of hooking up and backing up my iPhone4 (and iPad) to my Windows 8.1 computers, without losing anything or turning my devices into paper weights.  Since the folders where the iPhone data reside are in different places from WinXP as opposed to Win8.1, I'm not sure if you can just copy files from the old drive to the new.  Can anyone suggest a tested method of switching my devices over without losing my sanity?  Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Copy the whole iTunes folder from the My Music folder in Widows XP to the Music folder in Windows 8.1.

See the External Drive section of this article
Your iPhone 4 backups are in a different folder. Here are the locations for both XP & Windows 8:
    Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
To quickly access the Application Data folder, click Start, and choose Run. Type %appdata% and click OK.
    Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
To quickly access the AppData folder, click Start. In the search bar, type %appdata% and press Return.

  • Moving Mail from Mac Pro to MB Pro

I am going to access email only on my laptop from now on. I am still rather new to Mac and need to know how to move all of my mail to the MB Pro. That means all messages, sent and received, and archived folders. Is this possible?

Since both are Intel Macs, you can do the following:
With the Mail.app quit on the Mac Pro and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail. Copy the Mail folder and place it where you'll have access to it by the MB Pro.
Using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.mail.plist. Copy the com.apple.mail.plist file and do the same with this file.
With the Mail.app quit on the MB Pro, place the copy of the Mail folder from the Mac Pro at Home > Library. If there is an existing Mail folder in your Library folder on the MB Pro, this will replace it.
Do the same with the com.apple.mail.plist file from the Mac Pro placing it at Home > Library > Preferences on the MB Pro.
Launch Mail on the MB Pro and all Mail.app data and settings will be identical to the Mail.app on the Mac Pro.
The only problem you may have is with Permissions but if your user short name for your Home folder/directory is the same on both Macs, this shouldn't be an issue.

  • Moving catalogs from pc to Mac

I recently converted to Mac from pc, and upgraded from LR 3.6 to LR 4 at the same time.
Apple transferred all of my pc files transferred to the Mac, and then I downloaded the LR upgrade. That may have been a mistake, as all of the 3.6 catalogs remained on the PC.  How do I get the 3.6 PC catalogs into the new version on the Mac? I'm thinking that perhaps I should uninstall LR, have Apple repeat the data migration, and then reinstall the LR 4? Or, is there another way?

Just copy the catalogs and associated preview (Lrcat and lrdata) files to  he appropriate location (normally the Pictures folder) on the Mac then double click one of the lrcat files to launch Lightroom. Since the catalogs were created in Lr3.x they'll be upgraded to Lr4 when the application launches. You can upgrade all of your Lr3.6 catalogs using the same method.
Note that if your catalogs contain many images it might be best to leave the previews behind as they'll be rebuilt on the Mac in any case.

    Any suggestions? Thank you

No the SD card it doesn't mount, but you should be able to transfer music the SD card. You have to use the Bluetooth menu functions on yoru mac. There is a better forum to ask: http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=145

  • Moving files from MacBook Pro to MacBook Air

My MacBook Pro's display is all crapped out (can't even view on external monitor) and I'm trying to transfer files over to my new MacBook Air.
How can I do this? Since there is no Firewire on my Air, I can't boot into target disk mode and just copy my home folder over.
    Any other suggestions?

If your display is so bad, I will assume you cannot get to system prefs to enable sharing/screen sharing etc.
Have you considered removing the HD from the MBP, putting it into an enclosure and connect it to the air via usb?
Given the state of things that is what makes sense to me.

  • Moving reports from v8 Pro Ed. to v9 enterprise

    CA Forum: Upgrading and Licensing
I am currently running Seagate Crystal Reports Professional Edition v8 using the Web Component to publish reports via intranet web. I am wanting to decommission this server and move all my reports to another web server running Crystal Enterprise Report Application Server 9 and Crystal Reports 9 .Net Server. I know nothing about .Net (former employee was using this server). Do I have everything I need to publish reports as I did with version 8's Web Component?  Any advice on moving this over?

In your document you refer to the upgrade guide, this upgrade guide applies when you are upgrading from previous Oracle releases to 10g, not SE->EE.
If you want a procedure to upgrade the SE to EE, then follow this metalink note:
"How to Upgrade from Standard to Enterprise Edition ?
    Doc ID:      Note:117048.1"
If you performed this specific upgrade and you still see this error, then probably you are facing a bug, similar to the one described in "5844095", where the version is changed form SE->EE after 10.2.0.3 patchset application.
In your case it should be enough to apply 10.2.0.3 patchset to show it properly.

  • Moving timelines from Premiere Pro to Encore?

The only options that seem to work in my Premiere Pro/Encore version CS3 are to export from Pro using "export to Encore" .  However, once I do this I am left with a bunch of ncor files that I have not been able to consolidate into one project.  Nor can I import it as a whole then razor it into parts in Encore so that I can create separate timelines in order to create menu links for my DVD.    I have tried to save or convert the Pro timelines into wmv files with no luck.  Mac users don't seem to have these problems.  I am using a muscular PowerSpec PC with plenty of memory run by Windows Vista  which is an awful operating system because it freezes periodically requiring me to start over.  I am not sure that any of these other problems can be attributed to Vista. Encore seems to be an especially inflexible program.  I assume I just don't know how to use the software well.

You have that option, but it's a multi-part process, as Jim mentions. In PrPro, just Export as a DVD-compliant MPEG-2 Video-only file. Do the same for the Audio, as either a PCM/WAV, or DD AC3, Audio-only file.
Then, in Encore, Import the MPEG as a Timeline, and the Audio-only file as an Asset. From the Project Panel in Encore, just drag the Audio file to the appropriate Timeline, where it will snap into place.
One can also Export from PrPro as a DV-AVI, Video-only, Import that into Encore as a Timeline, and let Encore Transcode that on Automatic.
    Good luck,

  • Moving PDF from MacBook Pro to iPhone

Is there any way to move a PDF from a MacBook Pro to an iPhone? There is no WiFi in the room...only cellular service.

Okay, then use the first suggestion that I gave you. Put the document into iTunes, connect the phone, sync, and there you have it.

  • Moving Music from Macbook Pro to Nokia

I was wondering - I just got a Nokia 6126 that plays music. If I got a MicroSD card, using Bluetooth, would the card just mount on my desktop and I would then be able to copy music to it.

If you get a microSD card, you need the card reader. They're fairly inexpensive and you can get one on amazon.com if you like. I have an LG phone and it works fine with mine. I suggest one by iogear. I have the Iogear GFR201TF USB 2.0 Pocket Memory Card Reader/Writer which is specifically for mobile phones. It didn't work for me right away, I had to plug it in a few times before it recognized, but it works fine now.
With the card reader, it would show up on your desktop and you could copy music to it (and pictures as well).

  • I want to migrate from MacBook Pro (Tiger) to Macbook Air (brand new) Lion. How can I migrate?

    Hello.
I have a old macbook pro running tiger on it, and I recently purchased a macbook air.
I want to use setup migration so migrate all my settings, applications, etc to the new macbook air.
However, both laptops don't have firewire port.
I do not have a time machine backup for the Tiger. (does it even have time machine for Tiger?)
Please let me know how I can migrate from pro to air.
I really want to avoid manually migrating.
Thank you for all your help in advance!

A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
The Knowledgebase article Intel-based Mac: Some migrated applications may need to be updated refers to methods of dealing with migrating from PowerPC chips to Intel with the Migration Assistant safely. The authors of this tip have not had a chance to verify this works in all instances, or that it avoids the 10.6.1 and earlier Guest Account bug that caused account information to get deleted upon use of the Migration/Setup Assistant. However, a well backed up source that includes at least two backups of all the data that are not connected to your machine will help you avoid potential issues, should they arise. In event it does not work, follow the steps below.
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate.  Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
Screensavers written for the PowerPC System Preference add-ons
All Unsanity Haxies Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5 Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior, TechTool Pro , SuperDuper , and Drive Genius  work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard.  The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.  Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

OS X Lion: How to use Migration Assistant to transfer files from another Mac
Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs.  The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode.  It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
If both computers support the use of Firewire then you can use the following instructions:
    1. Repair the hard drive and permissions using Disk Utility.
    2. Backup your data.  This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
    3. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
    4. Startup your old Mac in Transferring files between two computers using FireWire.
    5. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
If you are not able to use a Firewire connection (for example you have a Late 2008 MacBook that only supports USB:)
    1. Set up a local home network: Creating a small Ethernet Network.
    2. If you have a MacBook Air or Late 2008 MacBook see the following:
    MacBook (13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008) and MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008)- What to do if migration is unsuccessful;

MacBook Air- Remote Disc, Migration, or Remote Install Mac OS X and wireless 802.11n networks.
Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
/Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft.
Credit goes to Macjack for this information.
If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the  Discussions where specific applications store their data.
    5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.

  • How do I move the tags and catalogs from old Photoshop Elements on old computer to new computer?

I am trying to move my Photoshop Elements information to a new computer.  I have gotten the software installed, and the picture files moved over, but the tags and catalogs are not showing up on the new computer.  From looking online, it looks like there is a way to attach that information to the files on the old computer before transferring them over.  Ugh!  Hindsight!  Having already transferred over 35,000 jpg files to my new computer, is there any other way to move that information over without deleting all those files on my new computer and starting from scratch?

Even if you have the same folder structure, the organizer will find that the internal serial number of the drive is different and show all files as missing; you'll need to reconnect. That's why the backup and restore method is better. It also recognizes the need to upgrade (convert) the catalog format to the new version of Elements.
Use Backup, Restore to move catalog | Organizer | Elements 6 or later

The doc was clean, but the OP should have copied and pasted the contents, they are very short: This is the content
I have purchase a new computer with Windows 7  for the operating system. I have the old computer’s hard drive which I plan to connect up to the new computer as an external hard drive. The old computer’s OS is Windows XP. Photoshop V6 and updated to Photoshop CS2 are properly installed on the old computer’s hard drive. How do I go about moving / transferring Photoshop to the new computer from the hard drive of the old computer?  Due to OS installation problems on the new computer I have lost the 2nd install of PS v6 from the install CD, also there is a 30 trial of PS CS2 on the hard drive of the new computer. I have the installation  CDs and key numbers for both v6 and  CS2. Also see  TS case 181364257. Would software such as “Magical Jelly Bean “be of any use in making this transfer?
The answer is, you should have deactivated CS2 and then re-installed on the new computer. It appears you did not, so phone Adobe Customer Service to have the activations re-set.
