Moving clips around in project

I have ten minutes of clips in a project with a few titles and transitions. I want to move them around to create the flow of my movie, but try as I might, I can't drag a clip anywhere. I've tried everything, option click, alt click, shift click. The tutorial show just click and drag, it's not working.
Thanks!
Jim WIlson

Well, rebooting had no effect on my problem. I click on the clip, the yellow selection border comes up, but I cannot begin to move that clip anywhere. Have I got some function engaged that is locking the clips in place or something. If you double click on it, it plays the clip, when you try to drag it, nothing happens at all.

  • Adobe Premiere Pro CC Timeline automatically zooms in when moving clips around

This is an issue that keeps happening. It has been an ongoing problem with Premiere Pro CC and now 2014.1. It would start after working for a while on a project and become more frequent as the project gets larger. The only way to rectify the problem is restarting the computer. I would be working and I go to drag a clip around on the timeline and the timeline will automatically zoom in and thus place the clip in the wrong location. This happens when I am not holding down any keys. It will continue to zoom in every time I move any clips on the timeline and once it starts it happens on all sequences. While restarting the computer seems to help I have to do that 5 or more times in a day which can be very frustrating. It doesn't seem to be related to any OS, computer, hard drive/storage. Deleting preview files, flushing PRAM, trashing preferences doesn't help either. I usually work with Quicktime files AppleProRes Codec or H.264. Any help or insight into this issue would be greatly appreciated.
Here is a video that demonstrates the bug:
Premiere Pro Version: Every version from 7.0.0 to 8.1
OS Version: Every version of Mavricks and Yosemite including version 10.10.1
The footage I most use is H.264 and ProRes 422
The problem occurs randomly throughout the day, nothing seems to trigger it. When it starts the only way to make it stop is to restart the computer
Other software running at this particular time is” Mail, Evernote, Safari, OmniFocus, On The Job, Text Expander, Messages, Preview

    Hi Patrick,

  • Moving clips around in timeline

I'm sure there is a very simple fix to this problem, but I can't figure it out.  I've edited numerous videos in fcp and was about halfway through one when the right arrow stopped showing up when I wanted to move clips around that were already in the timeline.  Only the down arrow shows up when I drag a clip to a different point in the timeline so it overwrites my other footage instead of moving it over.  I've tried cutting and pasting, but that also overwrites the footage.  Please help! Thanks!

sorry Jim, gotta disagree with you on this.  Rearranging clips IN the timeline (not editing from the viewer or browser) is a very basic and useful tool in fcp.  Learn to use it and your editing speed will increase.

  • Moving Clips to New Project

I've imported some video into a project and have left over clips that I'd like to move into a new project. When I open a new project and try to drag the clips there, it takes literally forever to move a 30 second clip into the new project. It actually never completes. I'm running iMovie 06 on a brand new Intel iMac with 2GB of RAM. There has to be a better way to get clips from one project into another. Any answers would be greatly appreciated

...It seems when I try to grab a clip to move it to another movie or to my desktop, it's actually grabbing the whole movie instead of just the clip.
    it does..
when doing copy/paste of a clip from one project to another, indeed all material related to that edited clip (e.g. 32clip from a 30min import) gets copied.. due to 'non distructive feature' of iMHD6 ..
    a) set iM's prefs to smaller chunks on import
    b) import just parts instead of tapes..
    c) ... or, instead of copy/paste, select Export/Quicktime/FullQuality, which is a lossless copy of the clip.. and just the clipe ..

having clicked 'import' and selecting a project to import i get a 'parse' error. I've no idea what this is or what to do about it. Any help greatly appreiciated

Here is one option to copy the whole "flattened" iMovie timeline to another project:
You can use the Timeline Movie.mov as an input for another iMovie project:
    - Copy the Timeline Movie.mov outside the iMovie project package.
    - Then open the copied Timeline Movie.mov in QuickTime Player Pro and enable ONLY the High Quality flag (otherwise the input will be deinterlaced!): In QT 7 you do this via enabling "Window/Show Movie Properties/Video Track/Visual Settings/High Quality" setting -- do not enable "Single Field" or "Deinterlace" because they deinterlace playback. You can also set "QuickTime Player 7/Preferences.../General/Use high quality video setting when available" to check the "High Quality" box by default (notice that the "Single Field" or "Deinterlace" boxes may have been saved to the file so sometimes you must take care to uncheck them).
    - Then import the copied and High Quality -flagged Timeline Movie.mov to iMovie via its File/Import... command.
The import process may take a while if the project is long. Notice that the import is one big clip and you have to manually split it into scenes.

  • Moving instances/clips around on timeline

I am finding that moving clips/instances around is quite jerky and slow. Is this normal?
Have all the latest updates etc on a MacPro heaps of ram and have Adobe Cert cuda card.
I have just migrated from FCP and moving clips around on a timeline is smooth and fast in FCP.
This is my only gripe with PP at the moment everything else fat and stable. Obviously I can use the overlay functions etc. but
I like to move things around on the timeline manually... I hope that I'm doing something wrong.
    Anyone?
    Cheers

Did you figure out your issue?
I'm trying to remove clips and save them, and haven't figured out how to do that yet.

  • Moving Clips More Precisely PrE 9

I am moving clips around and many times want to to insert a clip exactly between two other clips. When I do it however, I seem to chop off a bit of one of the existing clips. Is there an easy way to slide in or insert precisely between two clips? It's a pain to go back and patch together the broken clips. Thank you, Stan

I do not understand why, with Snap ON, PrE will shear off a Frame, or two, but if one Moves the Clip slowly, and with little "force," that does not happen. I have never observed similar behavior in PrPro.
If one is doing much of this Moving, it would be wise to check the full Timeline, in case some Orphans have been created. This ARTICLE goes into more detail on Orphans, and how to handle them.
    Good luck,

  • Moving instances around slugish?

Moving clips around on a timeline is slow or sluggish when I have my timeline expanded to fill a monitor, when my timeline is reduced as in an adobe window preset the movement of clips is as expected, very responsive.
When I grab a clip on the timeline it turns to a ghosted clip (looks exactly as a normal clip but ghosted but still has clip name etc when moving around).
Our other suite has exactly the same software and almost identical hardware and when clips are grabbed on this machine with a large timeline the clips actually turn to a grey only ghost (with no clip details etc) and moving around is very fast and responsive.
    Suite 1 with the issue:
    MacPro 4.1 - MAC OSX 10.6.6 - GTX285 card - 16gigs DDR3 ECC ram
    Suite 2 without the issue:
    MacPro 3.1 - MAC OSX 10.6.6 - GTX285 card - 22gigs DDR2 - FB-DIMM ram
As mentioned both suites have identical software (all latest versions) and have been rebuilt from the ground up together on the same day.
We have gone through our settings in premiere together and all prefs etc are the same. We have identical timelines when testing.
Does anyone know of any setting anywhere else that may be causing this issue?
    Cheers

Just to let you know, we have 2 systems and have finally
found that it is something to do with monitor resolution and not with mouse.
The system I demonstrated in my video which worked fine suddenly had the slow instance movement
so after some testing we found that it only worked "as it should" when the timeline was
made full screen (with the " ~ " key) . When we reduce its size in the monitor gradually,
you can actually get to a point where movement becomes sluggish again.
My systems maximum monitor resolution is 1920 x 1080 and I can't reproduce this functionality / non functionality.
The other systems monitors resolution can go higher.
So in summary there seems to be a definate relashionship between monitor resolution and this annoying sluggish movement.
It would be great if someone else could confirm this with us.
    Cheers

  • Moving and renaming clips in the Project Window is EXTREMELY slow, but the rest of the program is fine?! PPro CS6

    I have Win7 Pro X64 with  Core i7 and 32GB RAM...
When I'm editing and doing other things, adding FX etc, the program works fine BUT when I do ANYTHING in the Program Window i.e. renaming clips, moving clips, etc the program acts as if it's bogged down... I can't for the life of me figure this one out...
    I don't have a large number of clips/footage items
    I've cleaned the cache
What else could be causing this? When I say slow, I mean a good 10 seconds before the program responds to anything I've done, and when renaming clips, I always have to do it twice because the first time it doesn't "take"
    Thanks all for any help!
    Aza

It occurs with or without clips in a sequence... the problem isn't the sequences, the problem ONLY occurs in the Project Panel, every other panel is as fast as my machine will allow (very fast) only the PROJECT Panel is EXTREMELY slow when moving clips into folders, etc
ALSO, all my drives and preferences are set up the same in every project, only THIS project is moving slowly... I even divided the project up into 4 separate projects to cut down on the number of clips in each project, and it still moves slow... almost as if something has carried over to each project, or something

  • Moving a Clip From One Project to Another

How do you move a clip from one project to another keeping the sound clip and title that was used on that clip?

As far as I can tell, you can COPY all, or some, of the video clips (and stills) with transitions and FX and PASTE into a different Project. But you can't copy titles or audio tracks.
However, you can make a QT movie of the segment you want and import it. If it's short use 8-biy uncompressed or ProRes 422.
Or you can DUPLICATE what you need, and and new clips to the duplicate.

  • Moving clips between computers

I have clips on my computer in iMovie that I want to transfer to my daughters computer (both are fairly recent Macs running 10.8.2) so that she can use them in an iMovie project. How do I best do this? Do I need to put them into a project first? Am I best off using an external drive for the transfer (as opposed to Wi-Fi)? Thanks for any advice!
    Dan

    Hi
I think You can connect via Wi-Fi - but read my (general) note on this.
    Moving Event's and Project's
Connection - Either connect one Mac in Target mode to the other via FireWire. Or use an external hard disk !
(Target-Mode - Start one Mac e.g. laptop - BUT keep T-key down during full up-start - Now a FW-symbol is jumping around the screen and it will work as an external hard disk when connected to the other Mac)
    A. The External Hard Disk - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to work for Video. UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange works for most other things but not for Video whatever program is used (iMovie or FinalCut)
    B. Should be a FireWire one as USB/USB2 performs badly to me and especially when filling up
    C. Do never Move or Alter any folder named
    • iMovie Event's - or -
    • iMovie Project's
on DeskTop/Finder - as this will result in iMovie losing connections to them and repair can be anything from hard to impossibly
    D. Moving and Copying must be done within iMovie application and Events to Events - and - Project's to Project's.
    E. Moving Project's to Event's - Do not work for me - I have to export project as a QuickTime movie then Import this into Events.
Event's window can show two faces
    Like this
    or like this
from one hard disk Event - You can move it to the other hard disk
You can not (at least not me) move Event to Project or other way around only
Event to Event and Project to Project

  • Can I copy clips from one project to another?  The clips are still frames captured within a video event.

Can I copy clips from one project to another?  The clips are frames saved as stills from a video event.  I try the copy & paste but it does not seem to work.

The video was converted into MP4 and then I could get it into iMovie events.  I had right clicked and saved farmes as stills.  ABout 50 of them,  When I tried to copy and paste those stills into another project I couldn't. They came up blank.
I ended up going to a Genius appointment at my APPLE store this afternoon and was told that those "stills" aren't really anything. Not a .jpg or video, so the program doesn't recognize them.  So instead I'm using the Project with the 50 stills and copying other .jpgs and video into it.  (This is for a 1961 Class Reunion, so it's old stuff).  Seems to work so far.
So bottom line seems to be I can use these stills created from a video in the project in which they were created, but no where else.  Do you know a way around this?

  • Move a Compound Clip to another project?

is there any way to move a compound clip in FCPx from one project to another?? I tried copying and pasting but am not having success... it just just pastes something that I copied earlier. Any ideas?? Thanks!

Jim is right.  I also do this all the time.  In fact I "park" several compound clips that I want to reuse in a project made just for that purpose.  Then I go into that project, select the compound clip and do the Command C to copy it.  Then I exit out of that project and go into the project I want the clip to be copied to.  I then (IMPORTANT) click somewhere in the timeline and do a Command V to paste it there.  No problems.  The only problems I sometimes have is with embedded titles that occasionally loose the text in the first or second title in a series that might have been enclosed in the compound clip.  Other than that it works great. By the way, since you are talking about "moving" the compound clip instead of "copying" it, you could use a Command X to cut then the Command V to paste, but that's rather severe and might not survive as a clip should your project crash or some unlikely thing on your way to the new project.  If you really want to move it, just copy then paste then go back to the original project and delete it there.  Best wishes.

  • Added Clip; Lost All Projects

Over the last few weeks, I've built up a series of iMovie '08 projects and events. Today, I was editing a project and had just dragged a clip into the project. The clip appeared in the project window, but I knew something wasn't right when I could not get the clip to play. I exited out of iMovie and launched it again. When iMovie came up, all of my projects were gone (showing only the default "My First Project"), but the events were still there.
The console showed the "Error writing to disk" that has been mentioned in other posts plus a "dictionary" error.
    2007-10-07 11:54:57.277 iMovie[354] Project '/Users/will/Movies/iMovie Projects.localized/Maui 2007.rcproject' - save: Error writing to disk!
    2007-10-07 11:56:12.874 iMovie[354] * -[NSCFDictionary setObject:forKey:]: attempt to insert nil value
iMovie didn't crash (as I've read in other posts), but something went terribly wrong to lose all of my projects. Is there any way get my projects back?
Message was edited by: Will Deatrick

After some more poking around, I found that a new "iMovie Projects" folder had been created and my old one (with my projects inside) was now named, "iMovie Projects 1". I deleted the new "iMovie Projects" folder and renamed the old folder to the standard name. When I launched iMovie, all of my projects as of this morning reappeared, but not the projects or edits I made today.
I may have caused some of the problem this morning when I selected "File > New Folder..." from within iMovie. I had expected this to create a folder in the Projects Library (as in iPhoto or iTunes), but nothing seemed to happen. Has anyone else been able to create a folder within the Projects Library.

  • Moving clips...fce drops the clip as soon as mouse stops... quirky glitch?

Ok so i have a bit of a problem with FCE. I am trying to move clips around in the timeline. I can move them, but as soon as I stop moving the mouse the clip just gets dropped onto the timeline.
any idea on how i can turn this function (or does it sound like a bug?)

no its not snapping. I'm litterally dragging the clips around, and as soon as I stop dragging it just drops the clip like onto the timeline.
sorry for my inaccurate explanation. I'll boot up FCE and try again to make sure its not just a 2-3 times thing.
