Moving Clips

how do i move new clips spliced from a main clip to the start of the timeline without dragging them manually?  trying to cut a reel of my latest work.
I usually bring in the main files, grab the selections from wherever they are in the timeline, and then need to move them to the start of a timeline.
Selecting and dragging them manually takes too long(im pretty sure theres a shorter way of doing it)
also im on a mac mavericks and using the updated premiere cs6.

  • Moving clips up/down video tracks.

    Hello
In Vegas if I wanted to move a clip up or down X# of tracks, I could use the key-pad. #2 moves down and #8 moves it up.
Isn't there something like this in FCE? Using a keyboard command is much easier to keep the clip from inching sideways.
    Thanks

Thanks. Tom, even if there's a clip say on the track above and I have my moving clip selected (option + select) wouldn't it go right through the clip on the track above to any empty track I wanted to put it on?
Reason is many times I'll have a clip on V1 I want to move to V3 and there's a clip on V2 already?

  • I am moving clips to the timeline and they arrive zoomed in.  how can I stop this?

need some help.  I'm moving clips to the timeline and they arrive zoomed in.  I don't want this effect.  How can I stop it?

To expand a little on John's questions and link, every clip and every sequence has its own frame dimensions (and pixel aspect ratio & frame rate). By default, Premiere preserves the dimensions (or "resolution") of a clip when you add it to a sequence. That means that if a clip's resolution is greater than that of the sequence, it will appear to be zoomed in on the frame. Conversely, if the clip is lower res than the sequence, it will appear shrunk, with black borders.
If all of your content is the same resolution (which is the ideal case), then you should use a sequence that matches. The easiest way to do so is the "New Item" method that John refers to--dragging a clip to the Project Panel's New Item button--or, in later releases of PPro CC, dragging it into an empty Timeline panel. If you're working with content of mixed resolution, then you have to pick your poison and scale smaller clips up or larger clips down. The latter option is generally preferred because the former--scaling clips up--often results in unacceptable pixelation.

  • Moving clips vertically

Is there a modifier key to hold whilst moving clips vertically between tracks in the timeline to stop the clip moving sideways?
    Thanks
    Dean

I thought I'd tried all the keys especially the shift key as shift is the key in most other NLEs I've used. I now find it IS the key to use in FCP having only been using FCP for the last 6 years or so.

  • Moving clips and closing gap across all tracks - premiere4

HI, I have multiple clips spread across 3 tracks. There are gaps between clips that I want to make shorter - but still leaving black or empty sections. I cannot find a way to move a clip to the left so that all clips on all lanes to the right (ie afterwards) move along with it whilst keeping their relative postions vertically.
I can see how to do this by selecting everything to the right but this would be incredibly tedious. I want to be able to, say, grab a clip on track 3 at 45secs, drag it to 43 secs and all the clips on tracks 1 and 2 and 3 etc also move 2 secs to the left.
    Any hints?
    thanks, Greg

I have run some tests and still not getting the behaviour I want.
I started a new project and inserted three clips - one clip to each of video tracks 1, 2 and 3. I ctrl+drag the video 3 clip to the left and the other two clips (tracks 1 and 2) move but do not keep their positions relative to the track 3 clip. Instead they advance just by the length of the moved clip. This means that the length of any gaps between clips is not preserved.
The outcome can be that clips that were not overlapping are now overlapping, or clips that had a small gap between them now have a large gap.
I would really like to be able to keep the relative position of the clips when I move a single clip along the timeline.
    thanks, Greg

  • Moving Clips More Precisely PrE 9

I am moving clips around and many times want to to insert a clip exactly between two other clips. When I do it however, I seem to chop off a bit of one of the existing clips. Is there an easy way to slide in or insert precisely between two clips? It's a pain to go back and patch together the broken clips. Thank you, Stan

I do not understand why, with Snap ON, PrE will shear off a Frame, or two, but if one Moves the Clip slowly, and with little "force," that does not happen. I have never observed similar behavior in PrPro.
If one is doing much of this Moving, it would be wise to check the full Timeline, in case some Orphans have been created. This ARTICLE goes into more detail on Orphans, and how to handle them.
    Good luck,

  • Moving clips one frame at a time

I'm trying to line up some clips to all be the same length and start and end at the same exact time.
But final cut pro x is making it very difficult for me!
Is there an easy short-cut to move a clip one frame at a time?
I want these clips to line up exactly!
    Thank you,

The way I was doing it was zooming in really close (command +) and then manually moving the clips to line up.
But comma and period are exactly what I was looking for.
    Thanks!

  • Moving Clips - Frustration

Coming from FCP I'm used to being able to pick a clip up on the timeline and move it (e.g. to early on the sequence) complete with audio.  As I pull the video clip up a track (in FCP) the Audio goes down a track (or two tracks for stereo pair) and I can move things left and right without overwriting the clips that were immediately left or right on the same (original) track.
Premiere Pro seems to only move the video (if you click and drag the video) OR the audio (if you click and drag the audio) but not both.   I've read the manual looking for a "Shift" or "Control" or "Alt" key to make it work like FCP but can't figure it out.
So, how do I move them up/down a track simultaneously?   If it can't be done then it's a two step operation which is crazy!  Feature request time!  Arrgghh!
    Help!
Also, I'm sure I've read that there is no way to constrain, but IS THERE anyway to constrain a clip during a vertical move (so it doesn't drift left or right) ?   I'm spending more time realigning clips to 00:00:00:00 offset than I am moving them.  Frustrating and time consuming for something that FCP achieved by holding the shift key while moving.    Any hints?

I want to move Clip 2 to V2 and then left over Clip 1 so that I can do a picture in picture (as an example) over Clip 1.   As I click and drag Clip 2 video to V2 and move it left (over Clip 1) Clip 2's audio is over writing Clip 1 audio (on A1), whereas on FCP the audio for Clip 2 would now have moved to A2 and not over write Clip 1, because as I move the video for Clip 2 up a track the audio moved down a track.
Is this possible in PPro ?
It is, and it's arguably more flexible in Premiere, though perhaps not as intuitive or obvious as in FCP.
Following your example above, when you drag Clip 2's video to V2, hold down the Shift key; this "pins" the video portion of the clip to whichever track you happen to have landed in. While holding the Shift key, drag the mouse down to the audio tracks; the video portion of the clip will stay put, and you can position the audio portion in A2 or any other audio track that you like. This is what makes it more flexible than FCP's implementation, where the clip would always be moving in lock-step. Similarly, you can pin the audio portion if you drag it first, then hold Shift, and then drag up to the video tracks.
I totally agree with you on the relatively puny magnetic force when vertically dragging. I've request a vertical contraint modifier, as you apparently have. If you zoom in a bit before dragging, you'll have more finite control, or you can position the playhead to the first or last frame of a clip, which seems to make snapping a bit more active.

  • Moving clips...fce drops the clip as soon as mouse stops... quirky glitch?

Ok so i have a bit of a problem with FCE. I am trying to move clips around in the timeline. I can move them, but as soon as I stop moving the mouse the clip just gets dropped onto the timeline.
any idea on how i can turn this function (or does it sound like a bug?)

no its not snapping. I'm litterally dragging the clips around, and as soon as I stop dragging it just drops the clip like onto the timeline.
sorry for my inaccurate explanation. I'll boot up FCE and try again to make sure its not just a 2-3 times thing.

  • Moving Clips - Files lost

Hi, I don't know what's going on here and would appreciate some advice.
I imported a new set of clips and decided to move them off my system drive onto my media drive.
I CMD dragged the event, and it worked, but it seemed odd that it was immediate.
I checked and there was no ongoing media management in the background tasks list.
I was even more concerned by that actually.
I opened the destination events folder in the finder and discovered all my files listed, but they were only a few kb (max 80kb or so).
They were small clips, but not that small!
Oddly, some (5 of the 7) still played in QT.
The other two opened in QT and played a black square to me for some duration (possible the same as the original clip).
I can only assume that these small .mov files are reference movies, but checking the original events folders, the originals are certainly not there.
    So am I being dull?
Does anyone have any ideas what is going on?
Does anyone know how to find out where the referenced content is actually residing from the (presumed) reference movies I have found?
There is a little more background to this, but given these were all new clips, I doubt it relates...
I only recently bought FCPX, and my first experience with it was two crashes importing my iMovie events and projects.
After a long saga of salvage operations and multiple crashes, I have only just got my iMovie events and projects imported and FCPX to seemingly work properly. One movie (that worked perfectly in iMovie) seemed to be a constant problem for FCPX and was likely the reason for the import crashes.
I need FCPX for my work video editing (just bought a 3D filter, and I cannot find any alternative OS-X software), but I can't trust it with my video if this is going to happen all the time!
    Help!

    Hi Tom, thanks for helping.
That might explain some of the troubles I had when I first imported, it crashed, I seemed to have two full copies of everything in the iMovie and FCPX folders, which was not physically possible in the constrains on my disk!
However, not these files! - I have done some detective work and have found some answers myself.
These are reference movies (if that's the right term?), not sim-links.
QT7Pro allows you to view the referenced video files from a reference movie.
I found the originals - still in my iPhoto library.
I remember now dragging them to the event from my media browser.
It must create sim-links reference movies in this method of import too - from recollection, there was no dialogue to ask me whether to copy or not. Then when I tried to move the events (sim-links reference movies) to an external drive it worked - just the refernce movies, not the full ones.
Apologies - I said I had checked them before and they were definitely there (this was the case for all my other videos) but seemingly not true for these.
I still haven't figured out why 2 files died (black video) - maybe I had deleted the file in iPhoto. All a bit misleading if you ask me, these links / reference movies and liable to lose me my movie clips!
Anyway, I think I am going to count this as resolved for now.
I am also dubious about the methods of iMovie import, so right now I have completely reinstalled FCPX, removed pref. files, and renamed / moved all project and event folders. I am now reimporting (by copy) all my original movies and I will have to live without the edited projects (no big problem to be honest).
Hopefully after all this, I can have a FCPX that 'just works'!
Thanks Tom and Russ for helping me work through this, and so quickly too.

  • Moving Clips - and how not to lose the audio? Help needed!

    Hi,
I have used Premiere Pro 6.0 quite extensively over the years and have recently moved to Premiere Pro CS5.
With Premiere Pro 6.0 I could move/drag clips on the time-line and their linked audio would move with them.  If I moved the video clip to another video track, say, above an existing clip, the audio would also move to a free audio track and not automically write over any existing audio.  This would allow me to easily reorder clips on the timeline by simply moving them around and using other video tracks as temporary storage locations... and not lose or write over any other existing audio.
However in Premiere Pro CS5 if I do the same thing, the video will move to the other video track I move it to, but the audio will stay in the say audio track and will write-over any existing audio when the mouse button is released.  The only way around this I can find in the manual is to: (1) drag the video to the other video track, and (2) press and hold the <SHIFT> key, whilst, (3) draging the linked audio to another audio track to avoid existing audio from being over-written.
My question:  Is there a configuation I can set in CS5 to allow moving/draging of clips to work like in Premiere Pro 6.0?  I have already messed up multiple times in CS5 by inadvertently over-writing existing audio.
Your expert advice and recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
    THANKS IN ADVANCE.

    Harm,
Your reply is not helpful.  Just so you know, I have read through the manual extensively and could not find an answer for my question.  AND that's why I brought my question here.
Perhaps I missed something in the manual.  Would you mind re-reading my question and helping me if it is so easy?!
This has been frustrating for me for the last three months and I thought I would come to this forum for some expert advice.  So far I have been told that CS5 is designed to be like this (does not answer my question), and now you tell me to look up the manual (again does not answer my question).
I'm amazed by responses that miss the question entirely and give helpful suggestions like that!

  • Moving clips between movies

What's the best method to split an iMovie in 2 or move clips from one movie to another? I've tried 3 methods which sort of work but I was wondering if there's a more efficient method.
    1. Copy entire movie and delete unwanted footage from each copy. This can be slow with large projects and uses a lot of disk space.
    2. Create a new (empty) movie. Quit iMovie. Open each movie (show package contents) and drag the clips from one to the other. This works but iMovie will warn you about missing/added clips.
    3. Open first (large) movie. Create a second (empty) movie. Drag clips from the first to the second then delete them from the first. This works best for moving a few clips.

  • Two Problems - Trash and Moving Clips

    Problem 1)
I can't drag clips out of the iMovie trash. The application closed and moved some valuable clips into the trash.
    Problem 2)
I can't drag clips into the bar any more and one of the clips appears faded in the 'library' of to be used clips. When I try to move another clip, that one becomes faded (but doesnt move into position) and the other one returns from it's 'faded' appearence.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

  • Moving clips laterally in timeline

Hi everybody. Is there a keyboard shortcut for moving a highlighted clip frame by frame to the left or right (-/+) in the timeline, in the same way that option up/down arrow moves a clip up and down?

Yes....Option LEFT and RIGHT arrow. That does one frame. Add SHIFT and you get 5 frames.

  • Moving clips between events

In the FCPX manual, it states that you can move clips between events by just clicking and dragging a clip from one event to another. It also says that doing the same thing with the option key down will copy clips to the other event.
However, I've noticed that dragging a clip to another event just makes a copy of the clip. It's kinda annoying. Any workaround?

I'm seeing odd behaviour with this too.
Imported a tape which contained 3 separate days footage of different activities.
These were imported to my Movies folder in Home directory.
I created 2 new events and tried moving the content as per manual instructions for content on same drive but I only ended up with copies or a freeze due to a non-updating background activity (the file transfer).
Ended up with multiple copies of the same clips in different events on the same drive, some events listing the clips several times but only a single physical clip when viewed in Finder.
I managed to move a single clip successfully but for the life of me not sure why that worked - maybe because it was a single clip not a group?
This is very disconcerting behaviour when you're trying to organise content.

  • MOVING CLIPS AND PLAYBACK

I MOVED A FEW CLIPS TO THE BEGINNING OF MY MOVIE WHICH THEN TELLS ME TRANSITIONS WILL BE DELETED OR CHANGED DUE TO THIS-SOMETIMES THE CLIP THEN IS SHOWING UP TWICE OR DURING PLAYBACK A CLIP PLAYS AND THEN WHEN IT SHOULD TRANSITION TO THE NEXT CLIP IM SEEING A FRAGMENT OF THE PREVIOUS CLIP. THESE EXTRA CLIPS ARE NOT ON THE TIMELINE AND I HAVE SPENT OVER 15 HOURS ON THIS PROJECT, DO I NEED TO START OVER? HELP

    Hi tara,
    welcome to this forum
obviously, your shift-key is broken... you should fix that..... CAPITAL letters means YELLLING!!...
you have clip#1 and clip#2; you add a dissolve between the two; you want to rearrange order, drag #2 before #1... what happens? you get an alert, that the transition will get lost - sure, behind #1 now is nothing, where should the disolve go to...? imagine the disolve as clip#1.5...- that has to be delated, to get the new order #2#1... right?
or, you get clip#2, clip#1, and finally some frames of your transition... showing a few frames of #2...(that WAS the disolve)...
    make some sense?
making video needs discipline int the meaning: BEFORE starting a project, think about the final product (you are allowed to make notes on a piece of paper...) . switch to "slides view" and arrange your clip; when you're happy with order, THEN add effect, transitions etc......
have a look her to get some inspiration... or get a good book about iMovie......
