Moving Complete Projects

I have finished a wedding video project and want to free up the space on my iMac but keep everything at hand in case the couple spots something they don't like and want an edit made. The project has several versions of the footage, with music, transitions, stills and so on.
I copied the Final Cut Projects and Final Cut Events folders onto an attached drive.
Do I now simply delete those original folders from my iMac?
Is that the best way of doing this?
Apple's advice was to copy the two folders at the root level of the external drive. What happens when I have another project to backup? I'm not sure what I'm doing so some sage advice would be welcome.
Thanks.

I have been trying hard to understand what is involved when one transfers an event or file from the 'original drive' to a separate drive...someday or the other, in the course of one's video-editing, one has to know how to safely manage these events/projects. Have seen the information in the places you have referred to and seek clarifications on the statements below:
Final Cut Pro makes a copy of the Event at the location you chose. It also makes copies of the source media files and places them in a new Event folder. Keep in mind that copying an Event with large source media files can take several minutes.
Include Render Files: Select this checkbox to include render files for the clips and projects. If you want to free up hard disk space, deselect this checkbox.
Deleting a project folder deletes the folder and all of the projects it contains. Your media is not deleted because media is stored in Events.
The [Event name] folder can contain one or more of the following items. The contents of these folders depend on the options you selected during import or in the Import preferences. These files are used and managed by Final Cut Pro, and thus should not be moved, modified, or deleted.
Original Media: This folder contains either the original files that you imported from your camcorder or hard disk or alias files that point to the original files in another location.
The [project name] folder contains the following items. These files are used and managed by Final Cut Pro, and thus should not be moved, modified, or deleted.
If you feel that the 'question-load'' is high, please take your own time to answer.

  • Question related to moving of projects.

Hello! I am facing this problem right now: I have initiated the 'MOVE PROJECT' [project only and not the referenced events...have not deleted and render files, used or unused] for a completed project from my 1 TB thunderbolt to FW 800 LaCie. It is more than 30 minutes since this has been done, but the information of 'preparing to process' is still going on. Right clicking upon the FCPX icon in the dock shows 'Application not responding'. However, the project has appeared in the project library in the LaCie drive whereas the project appears to be in a folder in the thunderbolt drive.
Have looked up the projects folder in the Finder and found that it had the 'fcpcurrent version project' and the other folders. I clicked upon the FCPcurrent version hoping that it would turn up in the timeline of FCPX...but what happened was this: an information icon turned up stating 'your system has run out of application memory. To avoid problems with your computer, quit any applications you are not using'. It also displayed the 4 application which were open at that time: Event Manager, FCPX [paused], Safari and Finder. However, I was unable to I was not able to 'force eject' any application because the mouse and keyboard became inactive. I tried to get some control over the computer by connecting a USB mouse, but even this failed. Keyboard commands to quit were not being obeyed. When I left the room to contact an APPLE technician, by the time I returned, the Mac had gone to sleep. When I moved the mouse, the screen came on and I was able to see the mouse 'active'! Right or wrong, I quit all the applications other than the Finder.
The current situation is this: I have opened FCPX and have been able to have the project in the project library and when I opened the project one of the referenced events was missing but I was able to locate and relink the files.
I would like to have inputs about the nature of this problem. The project is 280 GB sized.
    Thanks in advance.
    Dr. Somanna

    Thanks for the instructions.
Have taken a long time to be comfortable with the 9th version of FCPX and was hesitant to get into the 10th version. I have not upgraded the OS to the present Yosemite and am still on the Mavericks.
Can I take the double plunge viz. upgrading both FCPX and the OS to the latest ones? If yes, which of the two should I upgrade first: FCPX or the OS?
    Regards and take care.

  • Backing Up Completed Projects

I am using CS6 Premier Pro.
After finishing a project I copied the folder with all my files to an external hard drive. I deleted the original project folder on the internal hard drive. Then I verified the project would open on the external hard drive. Everything worked fine except it needed to render the transitions etc.
I'm curious why it needed to render the transitions etc again? My preferences in Premier are set to "Save Media Cache files next to originals when possible". I verified that the "Adobe Premiere Pro Preview Files" folder was indeed on the external hard drive in the project folder along with all the "Project Name.PRV" folder and all the rendered files for the project.
I'm probably missing how and where Premier keeps its rendered files for preview.
Any idea why Premier needed to render the preview files again after moving the project?

There has been a lot said about the"best practice" for backups.
In reality there is no right or wrong, but having all your backup eggs/Libraries in one basket can be risky.
I use your later suggested method as it suits my style of work.
I prefer to have each Project, Event/s in there own Library. Self contained unit.
When the Project is done the complete Library is copied to another drive, plus if it's important another drive is used for a second backup.
What you have to work through is what gear you have or need to aquire to make your backup method secure and easy to do.
Nowadays you need lots of drive space and thankfully Terabytes are cheaper than ever.

  • Do I Really Need To Uninstall IMovie '11 to Access Completed Projects from IMovie '09?

    Hi everyone:
    What's Happening
I would like to uninstall IMovie '11 so I can complete a project I spent hours (and hours) creating in IMovie '09.
I am frustrated that IMovie '11 has deleted the project I had previously in IMovie '09, after I upgraded to IMovie '11.
Immediately after I upgraded to IMovie '11 recently, I DID see my previous '09 projects still reflected, although I also noticed my IMovie '11 removed weird, random features (titles, mostly) during the transition. And it was very random - i.e., some of my titles were reflected; some HALVES of my titles weren't, etc. Just random.
Noticing this and not wanting to miss anything I did with my completed project (which was already good to go, before the upgrade), I then tried uploading the last fully complete version of my project, as edited in IMovie '09. I went into my Time Capsule and just went back by a few hours and restored those project files. However, IMovie '11 not only did not recognize any of my '09 projects, it actually DELETED all of the projects it originally showed me when I upgraded. So now I was totally out of my project files!
Therefore, if I want to edit that and publish them ASAP, it seems I have to literally:
    Uninstall iMovie '11.
    Reinstall '09.
Restore my last completed '09 project file.
    Upgrade again to IMovie '11.
This time, if I notice some titles are weird, don't try to bring any of my old files with me again. Just let them naturally show up as they did before, and literally fix and comb through literally every. single. quirk. or new error I see.
    My Question
Is this really what I have to do in order to retrieve a project I already spent hours completing in '09? Or is there some shorter way to retrieve those files that IMovie '11 has dismissed and deleted?
Also, does Apple know about this bug? Are they doing anything about it? Does anyone know?
Any answers would be HUGELY appreciated!
    Thank you,
    DRS.

Thanks for your reply, Klaus1.  I'm currently running Snow Leopard.  I'd considered upgrading to Lion but was told, even by Apple, that I wouldn't be satisfied with its slow performance on my iMac 24.
I have plenty of hard drive space with 160 GB available on my internal hard drive, but I've been storing the archived video clips and the iMovie projects on a fire-wired, external 2 TB drive.  Could it be that using an external hard drive for the iMovie project is part of the performance problem?
A quick check on the Apple website shows that my iMac 24, which was manufactured in mid-2007, can support up to 4 GB of RAM.  I wonder if I should consider a RAM upgrade before upgrading the entire computer.  How big a deal is it to replace RAM in the iMacs?

  • "Moving a project from network L: drive to C: drive - how do I relink the files?

    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/PremierePro/4.0/WS3D22F379-B6C7-4d8c-9548-26AA3E1EA74F.html
In the above thread "Moving a project to another computer" it states the assets should retain their file names and folder locations so that Premiere Pro can find them and relink them to their clips in the project automatically and although I'm only a novice PP user that is standard advice for any software.  However I can't find advice anywhere on how to swap a project from one disk drive to another on the same computer.
What I want to do is move the project media files off my network (L:) drive to the C: drive of the editing computer as all the advice on here about disk drives is not to use network drives.  I've copied the files over but how do I replace the media file links within the PP project which are currently pointing to the sub-folders on my L:drive with replacement one's pointing to the same folder names but with the path as C: drive.  Sorry if it is a numpties question but I'm not finding the answer via search.
Reason for shifting project - for some reason the sequence files were being lost when I reopened the project so I had to reuse the last good auto-save despite loss of some editing work and the project had also suddenly started taking up to an hour to load all the linked media.  Given the advice about not using network drives decided to eliminate one of the possible causes before going any further with risk of losing the edited file..

I strongly agree with Jim on where to relocate the Project and media files.
Now, when you do Move the files, the Paths (absolute) in the PRPROJ file(s), will no longer be correct. The drive letter will have changed.
When you Open your Project from its new location, you will get a question dialog, "Where is file _____ ?" for the first Asset, where the link is now broken. Using the Finder, navigate to the folder, where that first missing Asset is NOW located, and select that. PrPro will then look in that folder, and will automatically relink to all Assets in that folder. If you have your Assets in multiple folders, you will need to repeat, for each folder, and again, PrPro will relink to all Assets in THAT folder. Depending on the folder/sub-folder hierarchy, you will have to repeat for all folders.
When all Assets have been relinked, I would immediately do a Save_As, incrementing the Project's name, so as to NOT overwrite that original Project file - just in case you ever need to revisit that.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Images "Disappear" When Moving a Project But Really They'r e Just Invisible

Last night I imported 442 images into a new project. I rated them, and edited about 40-50. This morning I moved the project within the same library. When I did so, all the images disappeared, sort of. The project appeared empty. I let it sit a couple of minutes, and undid the move to no effect.
I checked to see if a filter was blocking the images but it was not the problem. I checked the Project properties and it showed the images were all there (plus, I use referenced files and I hadn't deleted the CF card so worst case scenario I had all my originals). Also, when I displayed all the projects in a browser view window, the project showed up and I could sweep through all the thumbnails in the project browser. But again, if I selected the project and tried to see the images in either the browser, viewer, or split view, nothing showed up. No thumbnails, no file names, no empty thumbnails, nothing. The photos were sort of invisible.
I "solved" the issue by moving an image - any image - from another project into the problem project. Suddenly that photo and all the other images, were visible. Removing the random image did not recreate the problem.
Since I no longer have the problem I'm posting for 2 reasons: (1) to publish the problem and my fix in case anybody gets the same problem, and (2) to see if anybody knows what caused this and if there is a more direct fix than my weird indirect fix. Thanks.

I have had the same thing happen consistently. I import images into a default project. Then when I move the project into an organizational folder... all the images disappear. After a couple of panics, I have now realized that if I stay calm, close Aperture, then open it again, the pictures are all present. Quite a pain in the butt, but at least there is a work around. Albeit a bit scary .
    Best,
    Jim

  • Complete Project Suite

    Hi,
Please some1 help me 2 get the knowledge on the complete project suite modules names and there functionality in an organization....
Do all the modules work standalone without depending on other modules??(for an e.g can i skip billing module and use substitute financial module???)
    as per my knowledge
    Project Foundation(Free module)
Project Costing, Project Billing(combined called Project Accounting)
    Project Management
    Resource Management
    Project Collaboration
Project Contracts?? is it a module??
Portfolio analysis?? is it a module?? do oracle ve dis module??
    Project DBI??
whatelse in project suite??? Please some1 help me who has firm knowledge on it....
    thanks a lot in advance.....

    Hi
    Project Suite includes:
    Project Foundation
    Project Costing
    Project Billing
    Project Management
    Project Collaboration
    Project Resource Management
    Project Portfolio Management
In addition project oriented companies may use -
Project Contracts (it is part of Contracts suite)
Project Manufacturing (it is part of Manufacturing or Supply Chain)
Projects OBIA (pre configured reporting solution which is part of OBIEE).
    What goes with what?
You must have Project Foundation as basis for any project related application.
Project Costing is a must if you want to track the project cost. It is also essential for managing capital projects. You can also budget using that product.
Project Billing is an addition needed for contract project, if you want to generate and account for revenue, and for generating invoices for customer.
All other modules are felxible and you can add each one of them separatlly.
However, Project Collaboration is uaually used on top of Project Management.
Project Contracts can be used as stand alone, but it is usually implemented on top of Project Billing.
Project Manufacturing is integrated with Proejct Costing.
DBI and Project Inteligence are "old" reporting applications, but it is not recomended to start any new implementation with those, since strategically, Oracle will not continue to invest in those.

  • Validate profit center in complete Project Structure

    Hi PS gurus,
I want to validate profit center in (complete Project Structure) Project definition, WBS elements, N/W Header and N/W Activities.
    •     Presently in the WBS Element there is a possibility to check (Project definition and WBS elements)
    PROJ-PRCTR = PRPS-PRCTR
However I couldn’t able extend the same to N/W Header and N/W Activities (as shown below)
    PROJ-PRCTR = PRPS-PRCTR
    AND
    ACT01-PRCTR = PROJ-PRCTR
    AND
    AUFK-PRCTR = PROJ-PRCTR
    •     Also there is a validation for checking the “Consistency Check Project Structure” here I can able make the above customization. But I don’t know how to activate this (this cannot be used in Project Profile OR in Network Profile)
So pls. through some light on this and suggestions will be rewarded.
    Regards,
    Harisha

    Hi,
The validation rules customised to the project defination & the WBS elements can be activated in the project profile by entering the name of the rule & checking the auto validation button.. similarly the rules for the network and network activities has to be maintained in the network profile & this network profile needs to got assigned to the project profile.
    Hope this helps you.

  • Moving Multitake Project From one Machine to Another?

    Hello all,
I just finished a multitake session of ADR on my Macbook Pro. I want to do the hardcore review and editing/mixing of the session on my Mac Pro. I tried moving the project file as well as the contents of the "Edited Media", "Recordings" and "Temporary Files" (found in the "Documents" folder) to the Mac Pro, but STP keeps crashing. I can open the session fine on the laptop.
Is there something I missed in the move? I moved everything to the same/correct folders on the Mac Pro and both machines are running STP version 2.0.2.
FYI: The laptop is running 10.5.6, but the Mac Pro (for arcane reasons I won't bore you with) is currently at 10.4.11.
Any ideas or advice would be GREATLY appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!
    Best,
    Patrick

    Hello MacEnstien
I read your response to the previous question. And I have a similar problem. When I did the "Save As" I collected the files. Dropped them onto my external drive and dumped them on my laptop. And on my laptop when I open the project everything works but I can't see the video clip? What should I do?

  • Impact of moving movie project folder to external hard drive

I am trying to free up hard drive space, and want to move my competed imovie project folders to an external hard drive.
I want to still be able to watch the movies on Apple TV, iTunes (via iPods) and Front Row.
I created mv4 files and QuickTime files to view on Apple TV, iTunes (via iPods) and Front Row.
So, my dumb question is (and the answer may be obvious): Does removing the imovie project folder for completed projects, which are quite large (5 o r 6GB) have an impact on my ability to watch the movies in the above formats?
One more piece of information is that I do not keep my external hard drive connected permanently as it is more of a backup drive. Also, if want to edit the project, I would simply edit it from the external hard drive.
    Thanks in advance.
    Russell

Before anything else, make sure that the external drive is formatted a 'Mac OS Extended', otherwise it'll be incompatible with editing your movies.
(..To check how it's formatted, Ctrl-click on its icon, and choose 'Get Info' ..to reformat it - if necessary - use Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility. BEWARE: reformatting a disc deletes everything that's already on it!..)

  • How to export completed project to DVD?

I've recently returned to the Mac world based on jobs and have compiled a birthday video for my father in law.  We are supposed to give him this video as a gift tomorrow night but I did the recent update to my iMovie and now am having trouble using the program.
Can anyone help me figure out how to burn my completed project to DVD?  Under my Share command, the options listed are Theater, Email, iTunes, YouTube, Facebook, Vimeo, CNN iReport and File.  Any suggestions?  I tried saving it under the "File" option and then importing it to iDVD but it looks like the file saves as an mp4, which doesn't want to import to iDVD.
Would love any help that can be provided!

    BUT
As I see it - there are two KIND's of DVDs
_ Data-DVD - to store files - Can not be played in any Standard DVD-player - and this is done on desktop/finder
_ Video-DVD - for movies to be played on standard DVD-Players - and to structure and en-code this one NEED a DVD-authoring program as iDVD, DVD Studio Pro, Roxio Toast™, Burn etc.
So What kind of DVD do You need ?
And if iMovie'13 (ver. 10.0.x) has NOT changed this. The Share to DVD will result in a Data-DVD (I do not have last version of iMovie to test - hench why I make this remark) but this goes for all iMovie till iMovie'11 (ver. 9.0.x).

  • Moved my projects, doomed everything that is sacred, want to nuke and reset

So being "good with computers" I often skip the obvious and try and hack the crap out of things. So, I moved my projects to an external drive using finder because they did not seem to be part of a database of any kind. Well, long story short I bashed around at top speed and now iMovie makes it as far as a beachball and that's it. It has created thumbnails and processed everything, but stops there.
    WHATEVER.
I just want to vaporize it and start from scratch. I have searched around for some kind of .pref file or .db to nuke to make it forget but it seems the whole iPhoto thing is the hang up.
Any ideas how to bash it's head in and make it act as a new-born iMovie and create everything from scratch? Like how you hold down a key during opening to force iPhoto to stop screwing around and rebuild the universe?
(I will re-import the projects one by one later - I want iMovie thinking my only videos are in iPhoto like the first time it was opened, processing for 2 billion years and what have you. The projects and events are tucked away from its unholy gaze.)

  • Moving/Sharing Projects/Bus Components Isn't pretty

Anyone have any luck moving a project off of your C drive to a network drive to share it? I can move the files, but once it's there, I can't see the business components that were copied with it.
Anyone have an idea? JDEV Team?

Yeah, we have been sharing a project on a shared drive (two developers only) for a couple of months now, whereby we:
    1) keep our .jpr file as read-only. For any project changes we shout at each other before making the jpr updateable and the other developer gets out and in again to pick up the new chages. Saves one developer overwriting the other's changes but would be pretty messy with a big team obviously (I know, I know, we are getting around to proper source version control real soon now, I promise).
    2) keep all of the source on the shared drive but write all classes to the developers local drive. Therefore each developer shares source but has their own class files.
Workspace files are kept on the developers local drives also.
    3) have standard folder locations for both source and classes. We don't use the Oracle/JDeveloper/myprojects or myclasses etc. Clearly this is only a suitable scenario for playing with JDev or little tests.
It works OK I guess but the real dramas have been when we tried to move a project, when we remove BC4J components, or when anyone tries to manually edit a project or configuration file. That's when things can get really nasty. Again, an "automated way of moving a (BC4J) project" from drive to drive would really help.
    My 2c. Thanks,
    Simon
