Moving contents of iPhoto Directory

My iPhoto directory is very large at ~70GB. How can I move the ocntents of this? I see only one file of any size and that is "IPhoto Library".
Thank you!

To move a Library to an external disk:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • Moving content from iPhoto library to external hard drive

    I recently copied my iPhoto library to an external hard drive. I've just updated some albums and created new albums. What's the easiest way to move this new content to my hard drive without having to copy and move the entire iPhoto library again?

  • How do you restore a passport ilibrary file to a Mac iPhoto directory?

    My objective was to move photos and movies to an external hard drive.  I was successful in moving DVD projects.  Now I have movies that it cannot find some the pictures and clips which are in iPhoto events.  I probably messed up by moving iPhoto events to the HD which created the disconnect when I deleted them from the Mac library.  In attempting to fix this I copied the iPhoto library to the HD and attempted to restore the library version from 11/6 which was before I started all the moving.   When I copied the library file from passport to the mac hard drive it did not go into the iPhoto directory.  iPhoto did not find it when I attempted to link to it but I was able to manually find and link to the mac hard drive library of 11/6.  Plus iMovie still does not recognize the photos in projects so I'm as broke today as I was yesterday.
    Before starting this I researched in the Apple Community including buying the iPhoto library manager app.  Obviously I've missed something!!
    (I'm running OSX 10.9.5, iPhoto 9.5.1 and iMovie 10.0.5)
    1. Is there a way to restore the passport library to the Mac iPhoto directory?  Or is this not necessary?
    2. How can I relink the movies to their photos and clips in the iPhoto library?  Or am I toast?

    Sorry bu we can not see you or your computer
    How exactly did you do this move?
    The correct way (the only way actually) is to be sure the external drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and then
    Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
    And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
    And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
    As to your specific questions
    1 - that totally depends on knowing exactly what you did and how you moved the iPhoto library - if you followed the above instructions exactly then you can simply drag it bace as a single entity
    2 - Again with no details no one knows - moving the library correctly using a default "managed" library (the iPhoto preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library is in its checked state) changes nothing - if you made the poor choice of having a referenced library(The iPhoto advanced preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library" has been unchecked) which is strongly NOT recommended. then you can not relink with iPhoto (Aperture can) and you will have to move the library back to the main drive so the path to the referenced originals is the same as when they were imported

    I have reinstalled Mac OSX 10.6.3 and done the updates from there.
    I have reinstalled ilife 11 from disk and done the updates.
    I have deleted all the suggested files and then redone install and updates.
    I have tried just reinstalling iphoto and doing updates.
    Is there any way to get a replacement -  /Library/Frameworks/iLifeSlideshow.framework/Versions/A/iLifeSlideshow

    I have already tried to spotlight re-indexing but it did not help. I am hardly able to work on it, almost for each directory I browse its keeps on spinning for 1min.

    Download iTunes from Apple's web site and install it.  Don't use Software Update.

  • I moved my entire iPhoto Library to an external hard drive, which seems to have worked. But now my Mac Pro shows a backup of the same size in the storage info and has not freed up any space. help!

    I moved my entire Iphoto Library from my Macbook Pro to an external hard drive. (Prior to this, I also copied the entire library to a different ehd, plus I have 2 other ehdrives with backups). I was trying to get more space on my hd. It has a capacity of 500GB, but was down to 70GB usable, with about 300GB used up by photos. I moved the library by going to Finder, using Command+Drag+Drop onto the new Seagate ext hard drive icon. The move seems to have worked, as the library shows up on the ehd, plus will open from there. My problem is that now my Macbook Pro shows that I STILL have only 70GB available out of the 500, and that 300GB is used up by "Backups", which it did not indicate before.
    I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
    I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
    Thanks for any and all help!

    I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
    You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots.  Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.
    See Pondini's page for more explanation:   What are Local Snapshots?   http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
    I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
    You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
    The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library.  Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots.

  • Why is the iphoto directory no longer a directory?

    I wanted to go digging through the iphoto directory, but now it is one LARGE 17 GB file that I cannot dig into...
    I wanted to go into the directory to find the video files I am having trouble with (I can't export them from iphoto), but it is no longer a directory, so I can't do this...What's up with that??! Help!
    Does this mean I can't downgrade back to iphoto 6 - because it is no longer a directory?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions. To add to Terence's post:
    2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    Now, when you export a file to the desktop iPhoto will write the following metadata to the file for use by other applications: title, keyword and comments. So it benefits you to access the photos as iPhoto designed.
    Do you Twango?
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • List contents of a directory of the J2EE engine

    Hello,
    I have a requirement to list the contents of a directory of the J2EE engine of the portal. For example let's assume that there are five files in directory /user/sap/<SID>/JC02/j2ee/cluster/server0/some_directory_name. I want to be able to list the names of the five files that are stored in this directory. I have written some java code that will list the entries in a given directory and that is not the problem. The problem is that when I run this on the portal j2ee I get the message back: "You are not authorized to view the content of the requested directory. Details: Directory listing is not allowed on this server".
    I know I could store these files in KM and it would be very simple to do this but due to security concerns I am told by the project management here that KM is not an option for this application.
    Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Bert

    Hi,
    Are you testing this application which has super admin rigths?
    You can integrate this file system in KM and write a simple java webdynpro code with KM apis which would display the file name. I dont think there could be security problem with this option.

    Yes, some perople have seen this. Options:
    1. Try reinstall iPhoto. (see below)
    2. If you have access to another Mac with the same version of the OS, try and copy that framework over
    3. Reinstall the OS.
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
    2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
    2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
    If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
    If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
    If you purchased it on the App Store you can find it in your Purchases List.

    You could try Events -> Autosplit Selected Event
    And you always need a back up. Always.

  • How to see the contents of a directory?

    ok, here is my problem. I need to see the contents of a directory (ie. like doing a dir in DOS or ls in Linux) and then process each of the files in the directory.
    Is there a way in java to see the contents of a directory? Please help...

    hi,
    well you can see the contents of a directory, a directory in turn could have files and subdirectories, so you could use the following snippet of code.
    import java.io.File;
    import java.io.IOException;
    public class FileBrowser
         private File mFile;
         public void listDirectory(String fileName)
              mFile = new File(fileName);
              if (mFile.exists()) //check if File or Directory with given name exists
                   if (mFile.isDirectory())
                        File mTempFile[] = mFile.listFiles();
                        if (mTempFile.length > 0)
                             for (int i=0; i < mTempFile.length; i++)
                                  listDirectory(mTempFile.getAbsolutePath()); //recursive call
                   else if (mFile.isFile())
                        printFilePath(mFile);
              else
                   throw new IllegalArgumentException("File or Directory does not exist");
         public void printFilePath(File file)
              System.out.println("File path :" + file.getAbsolutePath());
         public static void main(String args[])
              try
                   FileBrowser fb = new FileBrowser();
                   fb.listDirectory("c://temp//");
              catch(IllegalArgumentException ex)
    the above code snippet first figures out if a File object is representing a File or a Directory, if it represents a File it just call a method which prints out the Absolute path of the file which contains the file name also, else if it is a directory it just recursively scans through all sub-directories and files within the directory, also if the String arguement passed to listDirectory is incorrect, it throws a IllegalArguementException, hope this was useful.

  • IPhoto directory (re-make)

    I would like to know: do you people
    1) Keep all your pictures in the Pictures directory and another copy in iPhoto,
    2) Keep your Pictures directory empty (except for "iPhoto Library") and keep your pictures in iPhoto Library directory?
    1 is you have 2 copies of each photo (Pictures directory and iPhoto directory).
    2 is you have only 1 copy of each photo in the iPhoto directory.

    If you import your photos into your iPhoto library then you'll have two copies, the original files you imported and the copies of those files that iPhoto created. If you plan to use iPhoto those original files can be deleted. Even in you have a problem with your library, the files will be safe in the Originals and Modifed folders within your iPhoto Library folder.
    If you can copy those original files to other media that will go a long way in insuring safe keeping in case of a HD failure or a situation where you might have to erase and reinstall your system. Not likely but it happens. You can put about 4.2G of image files on a DVD so it wouldn't be too difficult to back them up. FWIW my primary source files total 27G and number about 17,000.

    I am having trouble moving files from iphoto to a thumb drive.  During the same session sometime I can move 10 photos at a time, the next time I can only move one photo and sometime no photos will move.  I also have trouble downloading photos to the internet.  I was using a MacBook Pro and had no problems like this.  I then upgraded to the MacBook Pro with Retina Vision and this is the computer I am having problems with.  Can anyone please give me a suggestion in how to fix this problem. THANK YOU.

    iPhoto problems should be posted in their forums.
    I also have trouble downloading photos to the internet.
    Needs clarification.  You upload from your computer to the internet & download from a website/internet to your computer.  So which are you trying to do?  Either way, sounds like a browser issue.  You need to post in the forum of whichever browser you are using.
