Moving data between Macs
I have a lot of data that I'd like to move from an iMac to a MacBook. Would the best way be to ethernet them together and drag the directory from one to the other?
Transfering files across a newtork could be the easiest way.
There is also target disk mode which allows you to use one of your macs as a external hard drive of sorts.

You might now create a new temporary user account. Log into the new account. Do the panics still occur?
I would also visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics. Sometimes they can be difficult to track down. Looking at each new panic log would help determine if it's cause is associated with the same extensions. -
Transfering data between mac's
Hi,
I have an iMac & a macbook.
How do I transfer a lot of data between the 2?
I take it I buy a firewire to firewire cable.
How do I then go about transfering data.
Many Thanks,
JeffHow do I then go about transfering data.
Connect them and start up one Mac with the T key held down. You can also use file sharing over a FireWire, Ethernet, or wireless connection.

Transferring Data Between Mac & PC
Hi! I've been a PC user all this while and I just got my very first Mac.
I'm wondering if there is a way to share data between my employer's PC and my personal Mac using my external backup drive. The HDD I currently have is formatted in NTFS and it does not allow me to transfer data from my Mac.
I do a lot of work at home and while I'm overseas and I need to read/ write from both computers very regularly.
Please help.I'm looking to switch from a PC to a Mac, and all of my data is on two external NTFS hard drives.
Am I ok using NTFS-3g and keeping my drives formatted NTFS indefinitely, or should buy a new drive, format it FAT32, and move all the data to it? -
Moving data between two schemas
I need to move data between to schemas. I have a created packaged code to accomplish this. The problem is the execution time. When running the insert statements from the source schema to insert data into the target schema, it takes considerably longer to complete the statement than if I copied the tables from the source schema into the target schema and executed the same statement in the target schema. Any insight as to why this might be?
Also all data resides on the same physical disk, running version 10g on a W2K server.
Thanks in advance
Here is a sample of one of the insert statements:
INSERT INTO target_table(tt_id, tt_disp, tt_date, tt_emp_1, tt_emp_2, tt_emp_3)
SELECT src_tab.src_id,
src_tab.scr_disp,
src_tab.scr_date,
src_tab.scr_emp_1,
src_tab.scr_emp_2,
src_tab.scr_emp_3
FROM
(SELECT
row_number() over(
ORDER BY SUBSTR(fn_cil_sort_format(SUBSTR(src_cil,
1, 8)), 1, 4), SUBSTR(src_cil, 4, 8)) AS src_id,
scr_disp,
fn_date_format(date_time) AS scr_date,
v_convert AS scr_emp_1,
v_convert AS scr_emp_2,
v_convert AS scr_emp_3
FROM source_table
ORDER BY SUBSTR(fn_sort_format(SUBSTR(src_cil, 1, 8)), 1, 4),
SUBSTR(src_cil, 4, 8)) src_tab
WHERE scr_disp IS NOT NULL;In addition to the above post, you should create the table initially with NOLOGGING. create table as select has the ability to bypass logging. This should increase performance very much. No log writes will have to be taking place.

Moving Data Between PC and new MBP
I am capturing on a PC (TV Tuner) with files that are roughly 5GB in size, with events totaling as much as 50 GB. I am going to edit them in FCS on my Mac.
I was wondering if someone can suggest a portable HD that works on both reliably. I was thinking that I would want firewire 800, eSata, and USB 2.0 .
is there a better way to do this? Most any USB or Firewire drive should work, but you would need to use either Fat32 or NTFS format as Windows can't read the OS X file system
If your router has a USB port and network drive capability, you might consider setting up a network drive, as you wouldn't need to keep moving it back and forth between computers.
You could also set up an external drive as a shared network resource on whichever computer it's connected to so it could be accessed from the other computer without actually having to move it. -
I need help in connecting and transferring data (mostly photos) from my old PowerPC 6400/180 to my newer 24" iMac. The 6400 has been upgraded with a G3 processor and runs on OS 9.1. The iMac is running OS 10.4.10. I think I may have a faulty ethernet card on the PowerPC, so I've been trying unsuccessfully to connect it to my router with either a LinkSys USB Network Adaptor(EtherFast 10/100) or a D-Link Wireless USB Adaptor(DWL-122). I'm afraid the USB devices may not be supported or have the necessary drivers to be used on the older PowerPC. My USB memory stick will not work either.
With a recent iMac, you should be able to connect it directly to another Mac (even an older one) using a standard Ethernet cable. Of course, if the Ethernet port on the 6400 is broken, it will not work. But you should try it. Make sure file sharing is turned ON on the 6400. I would use the iMac to look for and connect to the 6400. If it doesn't show up by "browsing," try putting the IP address that is shown in the 6400's TCP/IP control panel into the
Finder>menu>Go>Connect to Server...
window on the iMac, in the field "Server Address:".
If Ethernet does not work... Do you have a .Mac account with Apple? The online storage was recently upgraded to 10GB. Other services (such as your ISP) may also provide online storage. There is a program called Goliath that
http://www.webdav.org/goliath/
that allows access to online storage under the classic Mac OS. If you have such a resource, you could transfer the files there from the 6400 and copy them down from the iMac.
Actually, if your Ethernet does not work, you may not have Internet access (unless you use a modem and dial up). I suppose you could buy a cheap external FireWire or USB (or some have both) case and drop in the hard drive from the 6400 (I think 6400's have IDE drives). Then connect it to the iMac.

Moving iMessages between Mac users
Is there any way to migrate all of my messages from one user's Messages app to another, new user's Messages app? I've signed as the same person on both users, but only new messages are shown in the app in the new user. I did try copying the Messages directory in the old user's Library folder into the new user's Library folder, but to no avail.
HI,
If you mean can the "live" messages shown in the list on the left of the main Messages Window the answer is no.
The ~/Library/Messages folder and it's contents will give the you the Saved Chats (or Conversations is iMessages) and the chat.db may help to populate new iMessages to Contacts with the "history".
However if you move it from one computer to another you still have to make sure the New Mac User Owns the Messages Folder and it's contents.
You may also want to move com.apple.iChat.LSSharedFileList.plist as this one holds the Recents List items
Again you would have to check the ownership on moving it.

Moving data between tables (how to find out if the 2nd table is empty)
Hi,
I have 2 tables, and I'm copying records from one table to another.
I've followed the Wiki: [https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/wiki?path=/display/vc/movingdatabetween+tables]
So far, everything works ok.
Here is my question: how do I get the number of records passed?
I mean, how do I know the number of rows in the 2nd table? (Remember that this number is variable, because it depends on how many rows I've inserted and deleted on the 2nd table).
I've tried to achieve that using a data store with a numeric field, but I couldn't find the way to increment/decrement the numeric field on data store, and insert/delete the row on table at the same time .
All I want is to find out if the 2nd table is empty or not.
Any ideas to solve this?
Thanks in advance!
Help will be point-rewarded.
MarceloHi Ahmed
thanks for your reply, it was very helpful!! (I've assigned points to you)
However the user can add twice or more times the same row... so the counter doesn't reflect the real number of rows in the 2nd table.
I've partially solved this also using a data store with a parameter called key_list, where I add (I mean, concatenate) the key field for the selected row.
So, if I have a table with 4 rows with key fields "key1", "key2", "key3", the parameter key_list would get "key1;key2;key3".
So far, it's ok. But when I remove a row previosly added.... I can't remove the key from the key_list parameter. (I mean, from 2nd table I choose to remove the "key2" row, but I don't know how also remove the key name from the key_list)
I hope be clearly enough.
Any help will be really appreciated and point-rewarded.
Thanks again.
Best Regards
PS: is there any way of "mark" a row that has been added to the 2nd table? I mean, using (for example) a hidden boolean field named "added", that becomes true when the selected row is added to the 2nd table. -
Want to share application data between Mac's on home network.
Hello,
We currently have one iMac at home and I would like to start using separate logins for different family members, but I want to be able to share applications (Mail, Address Book, ICal, iPhoto, etc.) across accounts. Can it be done? I would hate to have to set up all the email account information again or have duplicate copies of the large iPhoto library. Or two separate versions of address book and iCal.
This issue is also the #1 reason why I hesitate to purchase another iMac or MacBook for our house. I want to be able to be sitting downstairs on the MacBook and access the, for example iCal and not have to run 2 different versions and worry about synching them.
Any input is appreciated.
Thanks,
Brad.Hi Brad, OSX is setup to keep all this account info seperate, but on iPhoto for example, you can...

How to move all data from field l_eket_obj-objednane into field itab-zamowione?
Thanks,
JoannaHEllo
do like this.
loop at l_eket_obj .
read table itab with key werks eq l_eket_obj-werks
matnr eq l_eket_obj-matnr.
if sy-subrc = 0.
itab-zamowione = l_eket_obj-objednane.
modify itab transporting zamowione where werks eq l_eket_obj-werks
matnr eq l_eket_obj-matnr.
endif.
endloop.
Hope this solve ur problem.

Moving Data Between OEM Versions
I have a 10.2.0.2 HPUX Risc OEM that is working.
I just created a 10.2.0.3 Itanium OEM. I would like move the data the old to the new. Essentially I want to get any alerts, schedules, etc.
Would an import/export of the Management tablespace work?
Thanks,
JohnI think he meant you can't export one job from one repository to another repository...
I don't see why you can't import and export the whole schema..I'm not sure about the version implications but if you have access to metalink, may be open an SR. -
On my iMac I have exported a large number of photos and videos into a folder. Now I'd like to transmit this data to my wife's MacBook. Since there is so much data I'd like to use ethernet. I have these questions:
Do I need a cross over ethernet cable?
Do I need to somehow declare the folders as Shareable?
If I can get Finder to "see" the folders do I just drag the folder on one machine to the other?Hi grok12,
i have done what you are trying before and it is quiet simple.
you do need a cross over cable if you don't have a switch or a broadband router with a switch built in.
you do need to make your data folder shared, do this by bringing up the spotlight info on the folder and click share folder.
Next you need to open system preferences and click on shareing and enable file sharing.
Now go onto the computer that you want to receive the data and open network from a finder windows.
Hopefully you will see your 'data' computer and within that the folder you have shared. Then just select the files you want and 'copy' and 'paste'
job done. -
We have Netware 6.5 SP8. I need to move approximately 150G of data (and retain all the user rights) from one volume to another volume. Both volumes are on the same server. Is doing a backup/restore the best way to do this? Or is there some other faster method?
