Moving default Applications to subfolders in Lion? Feature request?

I like to keep my Applications folder tidy. I put music apps in a "Music" folder, apps for communicating in a "Communications" folder, useful stuff in "Utilities", etc. It makes it easy to find things. But Apple seems to have hijacked my Applications folder making my organization efforts impossible.
Installing Lion broke my ability to organize. It will no longer let me move apps like FaceTime and iChat out of the top level Applications folder into subfolders. I don't use most of these very often, and I want to hide them so I don't have to sort through a hundred apps every time I want to find something quickly.
I wish I could turn off this behavior which disables my ability to move applications. When I try to put them into subfolders, it just copies the folder instead of moving it and I can't delete the top level folder after it copies to the subfolder.
This is driving my crazy. One of the reasons I prefer Mac OS to Windows and recently switched back to Mac is that I like to be able to organize my stuff the way I want it. What really bugs me is that I used to be able to do this with Snow Leopard.
This and this alone makes me regret buying Lion.
Maybe this is a feature request...
Is there any way around this that isn't going to be a total nightmare during patching?

Yes, what you say is true and might satisfy some, but I actually kind of hate Launchpad. I even disabled it's trackpad shortcut I dislike it so much. It's too IOS-lke, which I find difficult to rearrange, as well. I just tried it again following your post, but I still think it's annoying and hard to work with.
I'm looking for a fix or workaround within Finder. I just want the old Finder-Applications-folder functionality back.

How can i specify the default application to save a read later doc in Instapaper

I have an Instapaper account, so that I can mark some online web pages to 'read later' if I wish to do this. I have successfully put the Instapaper 'Read Later' borkmarklet on the dock of my iMAC.
However, whenever, I come across a web page or blog that I wish to read later, and click the 'Read Later' bookmarklet on my dock, it throws up an error message that reads ' There is no default application specified to open the URL' and so I am now at a dead end.
Can someone explain to me where and how I can find the default application to get round this problem. By the way, I did not find this problem with Instapaper's 'read later' bookmarklet on my old Windows PC, where I was able to store pages for reading later with this app, and also to transfer them automatically to my kindle through the wifi connection at home.
I hope someone can assist... Or is there another way - (apart from Instapaper which worked okay with Windows)- to save web pages for reading later with MAC -

This is pretty simple in Safari, in the upper left of Safari you will see an icon that looks like pair of glasses, this is where you collect webpages for you to read later. The feature is called Reading List and looks like:

PDF opens in browser and not default application

When i click on a pdf file in a document library, it opens in the same web page instead of Adobe reader. I've set the feature of open documents in default application but in vain.
Any thoughts?

From your description, I know you want to open SharePoint 2013 PDF files with default application.
You could re-install your Adobe Reader, and then test this issue. Also, you can have test in another computer with Adobe Reader.

JAG errors by Default Application

I'm traying to create the Default Application:
Create Application Workspace (JSF, ADFBC) in JDev
Create default business components for all HR tables (except for JOB_HISTORY) in Model project.
Edit the Application Module, add nested view object usages to get 5-level deep nesting of region-country-location-department-employee.
Go to ViewControlller project, right-mouse-click and choose Enable JHeadstart in this project.
Create default Application Definition (right-mouse-click on ViewController project).
Create lookups as LOV checkbox does not work yet.
Save all
Go to Project Properties -> Project Content -> Resources and check the checkbox Include Content From Subfolders for the Templates and Properties resource paths. The Application Definition file, and all Generator Templates should now appear under the Resources node.
Right-mouse-click ViewController project, choose Edit Application Definition, and see how app module structure has been carried forward: 5 level-deep nesting of regions etc.
Run the JAG, by right-mouse-clicking on the file itself, or by pressing the generate button in the editor

Can you remove some of the Default applications

I want to give an iPod Touch to my mother who is technically challenged and doesn't have WiFi.
I only want the iPod functionality, not the browsers, email, maps, or any other feature.
Is there a way to disable or remove default apps that you don't want?
ps: I do not want an iPod classic., it''s interface is harder to learn than the touch.

I too would like to remove some of the default apps. Personally, I find the YouTube, Stocks, and Maps, useless to me and its just a waste of icon space. And whats with the "The touch may not be for you". Seriously, if someone wants a touch but doesn't want some of the default apps, that doesn't mean the touch is not for someone. I think it would be a smart move for Apple to revise the iPod (and iPhone, if people can't remove default apps on there) so that we may remove the default apps that we don't use. It makes absolutely no sense to just "move" the app to the back if we don't even use the app. That's like saying "you may not have any use for this app, but its here because we want to force you to keep the junk we give you". And it sounds a lot like a Microsoft move for the all the Windows operating systems they have released (up to Vista, so far) forcing Internet Explorer on all its users and not allowing us to remove it because it was integrated into the Operating System. Supposedly, Microsoft is growing up and letting the user to actually disable (maybe even remove) Internet Explorer in the upcoming Windows 7. What about Mac OS X, does it force Safari on its users, like its forcing some of these unnecessary apps onto the iPod Touch? I wouldn't don't know, I don't earn quite enough money to buy myself an iMac or MacBook (and I've even heard from several people that its more expensive to get a gaming Mac than a gaming PC with similar hardware configuration). Only Apple product I own so far is an iPod Touch.
But I will give Anna credit. Anna at least answered the question.
The question was "Can you remove some of the default applications" and a response saying "What is your mother going to use it for? Maybe the Touch is not the right device for her." by "D'Fish'N'Seas" does not answer the question at all. The question has nothing to do with what the mother is going to use the iPod for, so don't post a response like that, its one of the reasons that causes short tempered people to flame other people.
Ok, so since Anna answered the question that Ron asked. I have a question related to this topic, and if Ron is still wanting to remove some default apps, I'm sure he would like an answer to the question too. So, here is my question: Has anyone developed an app that would allow us to remove the default apps, or a tool that will guide us in removing some default apps?
And preferably the app or tool be in the most legal possible way. Wouldn't want to ask for something that is illegal.

I am new comer for PeopleCode. I find many functions are put into a work record, like FUNCLIB. I want to know if some logics only are able to be coded in work record as function due to some restrictions or convenience. If yes, what are the restrictions and conveniences? If not, any one function in one record can be moved to Application Class? Please help to answer. Thanks in advance.

My two cents on this is that the FUNCLIB_ convention is a legacy convention, which was rolled out prior to the existence of application packages. As one can imagine, there is a large effort involved in pulling out FUNCLIB_ code and re-directing all of the calls to application classes.
I work with application classes where possible; there are nice OOP features and things are more tightly defined e.g. you can't just define a bunch of variables and have the '&randomstring is auto-defined' messages appear during PC validation in an App Class.
If you are writing something new, then I would encourage you to use application packages and classes. If you are thinking of re-writing code that exists in a FUNCLIB record event, then you will just need to ensure that you've identified all the calls and so on.

Default application settings loses on restart or LaunchServices problem?

Problem:
After doing this tutorial:http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1428. I have a problem with default application settings (file association). In other words, file function "Open with" is empty. I chose default app for specific file type, do function "change all" (or just start specific application) and everything works fine. Files are associated whit that app. But after restar (or shutdown) every association is reset to none (open whit also empty). FileVault is off.
So after restart I must to associate files whit programs manual, or launch all programs.
What I tried:
Deleting com.apple.LaunchServices.plist - no help
Script run in Terminal: /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchS ervices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -seed - works, restores default applications and Open with list (but only till restart)
Onyx app - no help
MAINTENANCE app- works after first restart, after second restart the same problem

I am trying to launch Amazon EC2 windows server 2008 R2 instance using AWS Auto Scaling feature. I have used cusmized AMI in Autoscaling Launch configuration to launch an instance.I have placed Power Shell script in AMI.
The responsibility of script is to download code from AWS S3 and deploy in IIS server while windows startup first time.
When i check status, IIS is started succesfully. But default Application pool is not started.
To resolve this issue i have written one scheduled script. It helps to start the application pool if any application pool is in stopped state.
After this Application pool is started but i am not able to communicate with IIS server through browser.
Please help any one to resolve this issue.

How to set Pages and Numbers to become default applications for attachment?

I installed Leopard and have just installed iWork.
I started noticing that the applications of .doc and .xls that come in file attachments in my mail do not use Pages and Numbers as their default application.
.doc uses TextEdit
I copied the file to the desktop, changed the default app to Pages, but it still doesn't work. All new mails with .doc still uses TextEdit as default app.
How to change this?

How to change default application associated with some mime types?

When we install some new program, for example GIMP, I assume the newly installed program is added to some mime type database, and the /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache file is automatically generated.
Using my example, GIMP will be the default application for all its registered mime types, even application/pdf. I surely don't want this to happen, and I surely don't want to create all kinds of files that GIMP registered and right click on them and choose Properties and then change it in the Open with... tab. I want to systematically de-prioritize GIMP so that it will not override my previously assigned default applications.
I wrote a script to modify the mimeinfo.cache file, and it seems to work great. However, after a reboot or upgrade or something I didn't notice, the default application of application/pdf is reconfigured to GIMP. I think the cache suffix of the file indicates that it is just a cache and may be changed by system unnoticed. So I am looking for a new way to change the default applications.
As far as I know or guess from the phenomena, there should be some system utility that generates the mimeinfo.cache file, it seems to parse all the *.desktop files under /usr/share/applications and register them to certain mime types accordingly. The sequence of the *.desktop files get parsed seems to be related to the time the application is installed, and the newly installed applications seems to be parsed later and inserted in the front of the application list or be parsed earlier and appended to the application list. Is there some place I can change the sequence of the parsing? Or is there some place I can change the behavior of the system utility?
I know that I can populate my ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list to override the system wide defaults, however, I want a more elegant way to this.
Any opinion on this is welcomed.

Ah, right. Don't know what DE you are on, but in Gnome: right-click a (e.g. pdf) file -> Preferences -> Open with.
All Applications listed there will be available from the right click menu, the marked one will be used on double-click.

I guess what I am trying to propose is this: "de-prioritize" GIMP in its .dekstop file for the types you dont want it to be associated with, and manually add it back in through "Open With" for the file types you want it to be an option. Not sure if this is solving anything for you though

Can I use iWork '09 on Lion without using new Lion features?

I do not wish to use the new features in Lion, primarily autosave, with iWork, at least initially. In other words have iWork act as it would in S.L. However, I need to purchase iWork in order to continue using a bunch of Appleworks spreadsheets. I am using a new MBP with OS 10.7.1. My plan is to purchase the hard copy iWork '09 from the Apple Store (the AppStore download versions have already been updated). This CD should be some version of 9.0 as they have not put 9.1 on the CD. My idea is to just not let the modules (Numbers, Pages, etc.) get updated until I am ready. My question is -- will Numbers and Pages work properly on Lion without using the final update to the new Lion Features, and which updates to Numbers and Pages should I avoid?
Any help is appreciated.
