Moving Elements 5.0 catalog & images to external drive

Due to capacity reasons, I needed to move my pictures to my external drive. I followed instructions on backing up my C drive catalog and images and then restored it to my intended external drive, with the file structure maintained. I confirmed that the catalog and images are all on the external drive now. And, I changed my Preferences so that the files, camera/card reader and scanner files would now also be saved to that drive.
Unfortunately, now I can't seem to get the catalog to find the moved picture files. (and, I've deleted the pictures off my C drive) Any advice, anyone? Thanks in advance.

What I have experienced (and I am not sure if it was PSE 4 or 5) is that as long as the photo files still existed in their previous location, the Restore process did NOT update the pointers in the Catalog to the new location.
When did you delete the photo files off the C drive  - before or after you did the PSE Restore command?

  • I moved my itunes media library to an external drive to free up 40gigs.  How do I recoup my 40gigs?

I moved my iTunes media library to an external drive to free up 40gigs on my hard drive.  When I checked in about this Mac to see if the space was gained it now seems to be replaced by a category "backups".  How do I recoup my 40gigs?

When you moved the iTunes data to the external HDD, I assume you deleted it from your MBP.  Backup are not to worry about.  Read this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14329
They will be deleted when disk space is required.

  • I have moved my Itunes media folder to an external drive and Itunes does not find the items in the folder

Running Win7. I moved my entire Itunes library to an external drive to free up space on my laptop. Itunes recognized the change and all was well. That worked fine and I have synced several times from the laptop with the library on the external drive. Now the laptop is in the shop (sigh, not Itunes related a dead network card). I connected the external drive to my desktop, made sure my software was up to date. opened ITunes went to edit/preferences/advanced. Went to change Itunes media folder location and navigated to the proper folder on my external drive and clicked OK. None of the music, videos, etc, that are in that folder show up in iTunes on the desktop. Restarted ITunes, no help, reboot computer, no help. Have I done something wrong or left out a step. I could copy all the media onto the desktop individually and build new playlists but that seems like something that should not be needed? One of the reasons I moved my Itunes media folder to the external drive was so I could use the laptop for iTunes while travel and the desktop for iTunes while at home. Do I have to copy the entire folder to my desktop and take up space there? That would be counterproductive to using the external drive. I searched and saw a hint to hold down shift while starting ITunes but that did not change anything. Any help would be most appreciated!

Thank you for your prompt response - I did as you said and did a drag and drop into the iTunes window - it imported and got my album art from the net. When I started Itunes with the shift key down I was prompted to choose a library but since I copied over the media folder and not the library folder I was unable to select that so I guess I will have to create a new library and add in all the music, videos, etc. unless I wait for my laptop and export the library or at least that seems to be the case? In short, all my data (iTunes media folder) is on my external drive and can be added to the blank iTunes screen but I can not choose a library folder. Is there anyway around completely making all those playlists again? I am not sure my laptop will survive the shop with data intact and really hate to start over on those.
In an unrelated question - I collect old TV shows from the 1950's. Can I make playlists within the home video folder somehow?  In other words like one for Quiz shows, one for comedies, one for police and detective shows, etc. while I am remaking all my playlists for my music if I end up having to go that route?
Once again thank you for helping me out. I am not too Itunes savvy and really appreciate you taking the time to answer.

  • How do I have catalog on an external drive and update tags from multiple computers?

I have catalog on an external drive but the tags are on the computer. Is there any way that tags can be placed on the external drive so that other computers can access and update?

In case its just the tags that you want to have in one catalog that is easy. From multiple computers save the tags to the xml file.Copy the xml file to the external drive where the catalog resides. From there you can import the tags into the catalog.
Command for exporting tags ->Save tags to file in the tags panel of the application
    Command for importing tags->From file

  • Moving entire catalog to bigger external drive

...or any different drive external or internal...
A friend just had major problems moving his v3 files. He had one top folder for all Lightroom. He keeps his catalog and photos on an external and now needs to increase the capacity of the external. So he copied them over in Windows with the entire Lightroom folder remaining intact, and reassigned the old drive letter to the new external hard drive, so the path to all photos is preserved.
However, everyhting shows up Missing. "Find this folder" doesn't work. You navigate to the new location but it's not clear what exactly you "do" to relink. Clicking the name of the lost folder in the resulting dialog box (new-but-named-the-same-as-old-drive) didn't cange anthong back at the Library display of that folder..
I know I -- myself -- will be moving to a new internal drive from the one currently storing my photos in the near future. So his problem is relavant to the hassle i can expect.
    What step was missing?

A better way would have been:
Move the entire folder (you call it the Lightroom folder) with all sub-folders and all images to the new external drive. Do this move in your OS (Win Explorer / Mac Finder).
Do not change any folder names or the folder structure at this point. Do not assign a different drive letter at this point.
Open Lr, right-click the folder (i.e. the Lightroom folder) and select <Find Missing Folder>. Navigate to the folder on the new drive and select it.
You wrote: "You navigate to the new location but it's not clear what exactly you "do" to re-link. Clicking the name of the lost folder in the resulting dialog box (new-but-named-the-same-as-old-drive) didn't change anything back at the Library display of that folder.."
This should work - normally. I suspect that something went wrong when your friend assigned the old drive letter to the new external hard drive.
Check in Control Panel >System and Security >Administrative Tools >Computer Management >Disk Management what the actual situation regarding the drive letters is.

  • New PC, with cataloged images on external hard drive

I have 26,000 images on an external drive (currently designated drive M), almost all tagged and/or rated and indexed in two PSE 11 catalogs on the main PC hard drive.  I am just about to replace my PC.  I assume that when I connect my external drive to the new PC, it is unlikely to be Drive M. How do I maintain access through the catalogs with all the stored information?

See how to assign the correct drive letter in Windows:

  • Moving files/catalog to an external drive

I have an iMac with a 1TB Time Capsule via ethernet and I am running out of room on my 320G HD in the iMac. I'd like to move my 100G of photos from the iMac to the Time Capsule and then point to them.
Would this be better done via LR vice Finder?
Can I then move the library to the external drive as well? I'd like to free up as much space as necessary. I've recently purchased a Canon 5D MKII and the RAW files are coming out in the 25Meg range and it won't be too many flash cards before I've filled up the 320 again.
    Sam

My understanding of the time capsules is there plenty fast and server-grade. However to get the speed, you need to be directly connected. Who knows that the speed is via wireless, I'm guessing not so hot. I do know that you can add another USB external drive to TC. So while it 'may not' be possible to use TC directly for files (I don't think this is true though) you can still access another drive attached directly to it via wireless connection.
My plans, unless I find otherwise, is to use one TC for a backup with a normal external HD connected to it for all my photographs. When I need a little more speed, I'll connect directly to it, but if I want to be mobile with a laptop, I can still access all my photographs.
This is the plan mind you, unless someone says it's just not possible or there is faster method that lets me stay mobile.
    Hope this helps!

  • HT1449 When moving your iTunes Media folder to an external drive should the itl file be moved during the organise library process too?

I have moved all of the iTunes data to the drive, but can't seem to find the .itl folder when trying to make external drive the location for my music for a new computer.
Can anyone please assist on letting me know where the .itl file would have been copied to or whether, if I copy the .itl folder separately, would it keep play counts and ratings?
    Thanks

Many people confuse moving their media folder with moving their library.  A library is everything inside the iTunes folder.  Unless you have a specific reason for not wanting to move the entire library it is best to do that rather than just media.

If you move only media then the main library files remain on the computer.  If you want to move the whole library:
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) so you get a prompt to choose a library, then select the copied iTunes folder.
If this is to a new computer and you put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music  then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there.  (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)

  • I just reorganized my lightroom catalogs in my external drives.

Strangely enough Lightroom is not recognizing my external drives in lightroom. i can open up the catalog by launching  open catalog. Yet when I do
this my other external drives do not show up in lightroom even through all of my external drivcs are mounter on my desktop Imac intel dual

If you moved files outside of Lightroom, it has no way of keeping track of this.
If a folder is missing, you can right click (ctrl click if it's a one button Mac) on the folder and choose Find Missing Folder. Select where the folder is now and Lightroom will reconnect it.

  • I can no longer edit images on external drive if logged in as another user even with permission.

I have two users on my computer. Me (admin) and another log-in for assistants, clients etc.
I use an external drive to hold images.
Lately I've had a problem where if I'm logged in as Other (this side for everyone else), I often am not able to edit images even though the permissions are set for this log-in to have complete read/write capabilities?
Even sometimes when I'm logged in regularly (my admin side) I have received a "File Reservation" error. It says the file is being used by another user.   ????
Then it asks if I want to use Read-Only and do I want to be notified when the file becomes available. ????
    What's happened to my files?

Similar problem here. My Ical refuses to edit or delete events. Viewing is possible, though sometimes the whole screen turns grey. Adding new events from mail is still possible. The task-pane completely disappeared. My local apple technic-centre messed about with disk utility for a bit and than told me to reinstall leopard. I could of course do that, but it seems to me that reinstalling Leopard just to fix iCal events is a bit invasive.
I tried also tried removing everything, installing a new copy of iCal from the leopard-cd, software updates, all to no avail.
At the moment I'm open to all suggestions that do not include a complete leopard reinstall.

  • Trying to create HD disk image on external drive

I'm trying to use the disc utility to create a disk image of my HD, saved to an external drive (500 GB, My Book) via FireWire. After choosing the appropriate origin and destination info on the drop-down menus, and clicking Save, I get a dialogue box that for an instant shows the operation in progress, then reverts to: Unable to save DMG, resources busy. I might not have the exact words, but it's very close.
What am I doing wrong? What resource is "busy", the HD or the external? The dialogue box doesn't indicate that info. I'm not aware of any obvious conflicts. No other applications are running.

Were you trying to copy the Mac OS volume?
I think the OS itself is a big program that is running. So somehow the source is changing every minuets. You may try SuperDuper! or Carbon copy cloner to do what you want, both of which are free, at least some of the main functions are. They should have no problem when dealing with the OS that is currently running.

  • Wrong Mouse Pointer for Adjustment Brush with Image on External Drive

Adjustment brush guide "circles" is not visible when hovering over the image. It is only visible when you are to the side of the image in the gray space. This only happens when I am using Lightroom from my external drive. It does not happen from the local copy.

After some research, the brush preset I created happened to have the same settings as "skin smooth +" in Lightroom, which is the one it kept switching to.  Perhaps that was the problem...

  • Cannot remove Disk Icons from Disk Images or External Drives from Desktop

After years with PPCs, I just upgraded to an Intel Mac. I am now running into a funny problem. The majority of the time (although occasionally it works as it should), I am unable to eject disks. These include disk images from my internal hard drive, external hard drives, and disk images from external hard drives.
I do not get the “Cannot eject this disk because it is in use” error that happens when something is trying to access a file on the disk; instead, nothing happens. I’ve tried ejecting by dragging the icon to the dock, hitting the eject icon in finder, right-clicking and ejecting from there, and even using a terminal-based script that I found on the WEB. None of these do anything- no errors, but the icon hangs about as if nothing happened.
Occasionally I cannot log off at all (I just get the SBBOD); here I have to do a hard reboot. Sometimes I can log off properly. Either way, all seems to be fine when I log back in.
    I’ve run Applejack multiple times.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated! Thank you.

  • After installing 10.9.5 I keep getting "Application Not Responding" for iMovie, Preview, Elements 10, Quicktime. Also my external drive showing up as camera on in iMovie. I do not have time machine. All was working well before! Processor  2.5GHz i5

    iMac 2.5 GHz
    Intel Core i5
    4GB Memory

    I have a similar problem.
Moreover, as my external drive is split in 2 for (a) regular storage // (b) time machine usage, I can see in the Finder that I can connect to the (a) regular storage part and use it normally (image 1).
And I cannot connect to the backup part in Finder , nor see it in Disk Utility, nor use it in Time Machine (although it's listed in the Time Machine preferences, image 2), as it does not connect (image 3).
    Can somebody help?
