Moving files (also laptop-desktop synchronization / archiving)

I know I've seen this problem nicely discussed someplace, but can't remember where. The typical example described is that of somebody on a trip where they take a laptop and get to work with Lightroom. How do they integrate what they've done with their desktop master database?
In my case, here is what I'm trying to do. All of my pictures this quarter get immediately copied to a folder called Negatives/20081Q . In April, I will create a new folder and put new pictures into it (Negatives/20082Q). The Negatives folder resides on an external USB drive.
I would like to create a folder on my primary hard disk called simply Negatives, perhaps. When I move via Lightroom images from my media cards to the local folder, I should get better performance. How do I then move those images at the end of a quarter to their archived folder on my USB drive? I of course want all pictures in the Lightroom database taken in that quarter to now have the base image found in the right archived place. Thanks!
Dilip

At the end of the quarter copy the folder to its new location and delete the local folder (check and backup first of course). Then open lightroom and in the Library go to the folder containing the images you want. The folder name will be in red as Lightroom can't locate the files. Right click on the folder name, select "locate missing photos" and point it to the new location. Done.

  • Why do I get a Kernel panic when moving files to my desktop?

I am running Lion10.7.4. I have started to notice an annoying problem when I copy files to my deskdop from an email attachment or external drive. As I am moving them I get a split second "checkerboard" pattern on my screen. Any thoughts from anyone as to whats going on to cause this? Thanks!

Performed a TechTool diagnostic last night. Got passing grades on all benchmark tests. I wonder if it has anything to do with a firmware issue. I am having trouble upgrading to the newest EFI version for Lion. Got a call into Apple support for a chat. Thanks for your help!

I want to use my Time Capsule as a central 'hub/hard-drive' in order to keep all my working files in one place. I then plan to use my laptops/desktops as peripheral devices for editing and creation of these files. Is it possible? To create a personal cloud?
Can someone advise as to whether i can do the following:
Future Internet connection -------------------TIME CAPSULE (containing all files) -------------- Backed up on the WD 2T Hard-drive I have
(not connected yet)                                         I                                                          (*connected to timecapsule physically)

I am looking to have all my files in one place as i am hopelessly disorganised. I know the online clouds are a good solution (used Dropbox at work and uni for 3 years) however i am wanting to create my own 'dropbox/icloud' at home. So whenever i get back home with my laptop, any work i have been working on whilst out that day is updated to the timecapsule, and then ultimately as i turn on the other devices, they update to those newer versions of the files. Please tell me that the 3TB time capsule i have can do this, otherwise it feels rather overpriced as a wireless storage device?
Another note (to those in the know) If i am to be working on large files (REVIT/SOLIDWORKS/KEYSHOT/CREO/AUTOCAD) - is the timecapsule connection good enough to support editing and updating these files?
I know i may be asking a question that many have before, but as a bit of a technical novice I wanted a clear-cut answer to my specific circumstances. Your help is greatly appreciated.
(*can i use this WD hard-drive that is connected to the Time Capsule as a back up? so that the time machine back-ups/any back ups are also backed up onto this one? can the WD be a backup for the TC?)
    Kind Regards

The diagram was supposed to look more like this......

  • Moved iPhoto 11 library to external drive and have a iPhoto Library file left on desktop

    Hello,
I have a blue file on my desktop labeled iPhoto Library, that appeared during the course of me moving my  iPhoto Library ( iPhoto 11) to an external hard drive to make room on the internal disk, my attempts to reopen iPhoto on the internal disk,  move selected photos from the iPhoto Library on the external drive over to the newly emptied iPhoto Library on my laptop.
The blue iPhoto Library file contains these items:
    AlbumData.xml
    AlbumData2.xml
    iPhoto.ipspot
Questions: does this blue file belong somewhere or can I trash it?
    This is what I did:
    1. I opened Pictures, dragged the iPhoto Library from there to the external drive.
    2. When I opened iPhoto on my MBP it said it needed a library to open with and the choices already in the box were:
    iPhoto Library(default)
    iPhoto Library
    3. I chose "iPhoto Library" because I thought "(default)" meant restoring the original library.
    4. iPhoto opened to the "get started with iPhoto" like a new install.
5.I moved (drag and drop ) some photos from the external drive back into the "empty" iPhoto Library. I tried to move a group of photos but I didn't know how to do it so ...
    6. I took the iPhoto Library from the trash and put it back into the "empty" iPhoto Library.
    7. I tried to delete all the photos except the ones I wanted to keep in the internal iPhoto Library. I couldn't do it so....
    8. I closed iPhoto, went back into Pictures and trashed the internal iPhoto Library again.
    9. Reopened iPhoto and it needed a library to open with and I think I clicked
    iPhoto Library (default)
    10. When I opened iPhoto this time, it was the "get started with iPhoto" but the original photo albums and labels listed but all empty.
That's what I remember so far.
    Hope you can help.

It appears you created a new library.  Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and select "Choose Library".
Navigate to the library on the external hard drive and select it.  Once you're satisfied that it's the one you want you can delete that folder from your desktop.

  • I imported my iweb site files from my desktop to my laptop and now they wont open up in iweb

    Hi,
I imported my iweb site files from my desktop to my laptop and now they wont open up in iweb.
I can see the files in the home/sites folder but cant seem to be able to replace them with the site that is already in iweb?
I have just upgraded to lion on the macbook pro and was using 10.4.x on the desktop.
Is there any way to replace the files and work on the web site on the MBP?
And I dont see the library/application support/iweb folder anywhere.
    Much appreciate the feedback.
    Thanks

As I said earlier, iWeb does not open/import webpages.
And yes, you need the domain file. The movie demonstrates how to move them to and from the default location.
And the page explains how to open the hidden library folder in Lion. Which is also discussed in the Lion forum and extensively in this one.

  • Moving DreamWeaver website development back and forth between a laptop & desktop?

Ok, let's say that I've installed DreamWeaver on my laptop and desktop machines.
I am developing a website on the laptop:  I've created a template, and generated all the children webpages from that template.
When I update the template - all the children webpages of that template update!  (( This is one of the most powerful features of DreamWeaver, IMO ))
Now I have decided to move the entire website development over to the Desktop - that mean all the files and folders, as well as the DreamWeaver information regarding the Template and the children webpages that were developed from that template...
    How do you do this?
    Thanks for any help.

It is an external HD, yes, but a "portable" HD... I have also tried just the external HD but found it very bulky and I always had to lug around the power supply and cords for the HD. Google "portable hard drive passport 500gb"... for example... that's what I use.
    http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&sugexp=pfwl&tok=o-MzmA7RWsR0_HVA9BIvtg&cp=32& gs_id=2n&xhr=t&q=portable+hard+drive+passport+500gb&gs_upl=&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.,cf.osb& biw=1176&bih=861&wrapid=tljp1327460600580060&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=116127269428491234 13&sa=X&ei=DHEfT9G5Goeq2gWr2umRAw&sqi=2&ved=0CJgBEPICMAE#
I had originally set up my client files on my desktop... those files not only included the Web site files, but ALL related communication, content, development files (images, videos, Flash). Nothing worse than being away from home and realizing I'd forgotten to take the photo/text/video development files with me. So I just copy/pasted the ENTIRE client file on the the portable drive... which included any DW site files. Now you may have to adjust some drive names (D:, L:, J: or whatever.) but you can hot swap back and forth and always carry the current version with you to whichever computer you are on
A "portable" HD rather than just an "external"...which may need it's own power supply, means that you can hot swap the HD, just like a thumb drive.... only a heck af a lot BIGGER!
....But during testing and set up... always keep a complete backup of ALL files until you get your particular set up working.
    Best wishes,

  • I keep getting "error occurred while attempting to import file *******. The disc your are attempting to use is full." I have an external hard drive that I moved files over to, but apparently they're also still on my hard drive? HELP!

I keep getting "error occurred while attempting to import file *******. The disc your are attempting to use is full." I have an external hard drive that I moved files over to, but apparently they're also still on my hard drive? HELP!

So you have backed up the content of the computer's hard drive, too?
That usually is a great idea since it is possible to lose use of the system
if parts of it have accidentally been removed or get over-written, or the
main system files get corrupted, when the hard disk drive gets too full.
If you have not trashed the originals of your created content, that remain
after you made copies on an external hard drive or other device, then
that is what you'd have to do to reclaim the capacity still in use by them.
What are specifications of the hard disk drive? The unused capacity
verses the used, in GB? If the hard drive has less than 15 to 20%
free or unused capacity, you could run into trouble. Mine are 40-50%
unused hard drive space, so ample room is available for automatic
Virtual Memory to use that capacity as temporary swap file space.
This is helpful when the computer could use more physical RAM
memory capacity, but doesn't have it. Or if the RAM is maxxed out
and you can't add any more. Virtual Memory is part of OS X and the
system automatically can use as much as is available, but it is better
to be sure there is plenty of resources available to include chip RAM
as well as unused or free hard drive capacity for use as VM.
If for some reason your files in Trash won't go away when you empty
it, you may have to restart. Be sure you have not included any System
files in the content in the Trash, or the Mac may not start up later on.
You may have to boot the computer from the install-restore OS X DVD
and run Repair Disk from its version of Disk Utility, to be sure it's OK.
I'm guessing that by now you know enough about the vintage system
in the older hardware to figure it out, so I won't write about it now.
In any event... hopefully you can simply trash the files, but check them
carefully, & you may need to remove (copy to archive first) even more.
    Good luck & happy computing!

System files are hidden by default in Finder now, search for what you want then click the little + button on the top right of the bar that appears when you do a search. A new bar comes up and click the first box (that says "Kind"), change it to "System Files". Then change the box that says "aren't included" to "are included" and your file should show up.

Don't know if that would be a failing hard drive, but it may be that you are out of available space. How much hard drive space do you have available? Please highlight the Macintosh HD icon and then press Command and I for a get info window. Once open, please copy and post the following:
    Capacity:
    Used:
    Available:
Mac OS requires a minimum of 10 - 15% of total hard drive space available and empty at all times in order to operate properly.

  • I moved my iMovie file to the desktop.  Now I can't open it and it is no longer in iMovie either.  Anyway to retrieve it?

My iMovie file was dragged to the desktop, so i could access it easier and when i try to open it or move it nothing happens. the movie is also no longer in iMovie

    Hi,
From the iMovie menu bar click File > Open Library >  iMovie Library
If that doesn't help, click File >  Open > Other. You should see a dialog box. Click Locate then navigatre to the iMovie file on your Desktop then click Open.

I am having trouble moving files from iphoto to a thumb drive.  During the same session sometime I can move 10 photos at a time, the next time I can only move one photo and sometime no photos will move.  I also have trouble downloading photos to the internet.  I was using a MacBook Pro and had no problems like this.  I then upgraded to the MacBook Pro with Retina Vision and this is the computer I am having problems with.  Can anyone please give me a suggestion in how to fix this problem. THANK YOU.

iPhoto problems should be posted in their forums.
I also have trouble downloading photos to the internet.
Needs clarification.  You upload from your computer to the internet & download from a website/internet to your computer.  So which are you trying to do?  Either way, sounds like a browser issue.  You need to post in the forum of whichever browser you are using.

  • Moving files from desktop to hard drive?

Just installed Mavericks.  When I try to move a file from the desktop to the hard drive I am told that the move requires an administrator name and password.  "To move file click Authenticate" How can I stop that?

The root of the HD is also owned by the system. If you really want to put files there make a folder as an admin user & then change the ownership & group permissions so the other users can access it.
The /Users/Shared folder is really where stuff that is accessible to everyone belongs. Keeping your files within your home also helps with any backups or migrations in the future.

My iMac all of the sudden started going in and out of the dashboard, then started changing all files on the desktop to 2's. It also did this when having another window open. Do I have a virus?

There are no viruses that can affect Apple OS X.
What files do you keep on the Desktop? How many?
Performance tip: Keep the Desktop clutter-free (empty, if possible)
Mac OS X's Desktop is the de facto location for downloaded files, and for many users, in-progress works that will either be organized later or deleted altogether. The desktop can also be gluttonous, however, becoming a catch-all for files that linger indefinitely.
Unfortunately - aside from the effect of disarray it creates - keeping dozens or hundreds of files on the Desktop can significantly degrade performance. Not necessarily because the system is sluggish with regard to rendering the icons on the desktop and storing them in memory persistently (which may be true in some cases), but more likely because keeping an excessive number of items on the Desktop can cause the windowserver process to generate reams of logfiles, which obviously draws resources away from other system tasks. Each of your icons on your desktop is stored as a window in the window server, not as an alias. The more you have stored, the more strain it puts on the window server. Check your desktop for unnecessary icons and clear them out.
Keeping as few items as possible on the Desktop can prove a surprisingly effective performance boon. Even creating a single folder on your Desktop and placing all current and future clutter inside, then logging out and back in can provide an immediately noticeable speed boost, particularly for the Finder.
And it is why Apple invented 'Stacks' for Leopard.

  • Directions on how to copy files directly from desktop to laptop

Just bought a new Mac Book Pro. I would like to copy only select files from my desktop to laptop. Can I hook the two together via firewire and just copy them or do I need to go the ethernet route and file sharing etc. If ethernet route, is it slow or fast?
    Thanks.
P.S. I don't want to use migration assistant and copy all settings etc. The laptop is for son going off to college and he wants it "clean".

Data such as music will copy perfectly by Drag & Drop. Just slide the items onto the target, 'hover' over folders if you want them to open, and then 'drop', i.e. release the mouse button. If that 'spring open' action is new to you it might take a few goes to end up in the right place; at any time you can move the mouse cursor up into the menubar and release the button – nothing will be copied, and you can try again.
OR you can drop anywhere and tidy up afterwards.
