Moving files and geting "!" on library

I upgraded my hard drive, and wanted to move my music library from an external drive to the bigger internal drive. But even though I copied the music files to the hard drive, the library looks to the external drive. If the external drive is turned off, it can't locate the files and I get the dreaded "!" in the left column, I know there must be way for the system to automatically re-index and find all those files (isn't there?).

Thanks, but this didn't work. Funny thing is, that I can find each song individually by simply searching for it, and it is on the hard drive. Under the main music folder on the hard drive, however, are a bunch of library subfolders, presumably created at different times. Do you think I should move all the contents into the main folder? But how do I get it to find and index everything?

  • Moving files and folders in the Library module

I teach a lot of LR users and one area that's consistantly frustrating and unintuitive (even to some experienced users) are the rules for moving files and folders around in the Library module. I'm not sure I have all the right answers/suggestions/remedies but here are the basic points worth examining:
    1) Additional hard drives aren't listed unless images from it have been imported into Lightroom. It would be nice if people could add a new hard drive without importing files from it. People don't get it that you can select "Add Folder" from the Folders pop up menu. Classic example: Say someone has purchased a new hard drive for archiving purposes. It's empty and they want to drag folders of images onto it from within LR. Possible Solution: include a "Add Drive..." option from the Folder's panel + pop-up menu that would behave the same and add a root level folder.
    2) One can't drag more than one folder at a time. While I assume this is designed to prevent accidental mass movement it would be nice if one could enable the movement of multiple folders.
    3) One can't drag a folder onto the main drive bar that lists the drive's name and capacities - one has to drag onto a folder within a drive. I'd love to be able to drag a folder onto the root level of a drive by dropping onto the drive bar (this would be similar to the MacOS finder).
    4) Sometimes the root level of a drive isn't apparent. One may need to right click on a folder and select "Show Parent Folder" to show the root level folder which is named after the volume. Showing a root "folder" that has the same name as the drive is also confusing to people since there isn't actually a folder on the hard drive with that name.  I completely understand why folders are hidden by default and I'm not sure the remedy is but, again, this isn't intuitive for new users. If #3 worked as described perhaps we could have root level access without the root folder?

Perhaps I should add that I really like and appreciate a lot of the decisions that have already been implemented into the Library's Folder's tab. Moving files instead of copying them, showing only folders that contain imported images, the ability to show or hide parent folders.... Bravo!

  • Can iTunes monitor folders for new files and add to library?

    Hi,
Is there a way to have iTunes monitor my media folders so that if I add any media files in those folders, iTunes will catch the added media files and add them into the library automatically? I have been using something similar in WMP10; moving to iTunes since iPods are not supported in WMP Sorry if this has already been asked (couldnt find anything similar through search)

No it cant you have to add manually

  • Script for moving files and directory to archive

    Hi,
I've search the web for good working script to archive my files and folder with no luck.
do you have a script that move and preserve the structure of older files and folders that have not been accessed for X days?

Hello, I found this quite quickly in the TechNet Gallery. It seems like it would do what you're looking to do.
    https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/Archive-old-files-with-042f859a
    # Powershell script - move old files to an archive location.
    # Writes log files to $logpath
    # Ver 0.6
    $path = "C:\TEMP"
    $archpath = "D:\TEMP-ARCH"
    $days = "30"
    $logpath = "C:\Temp"
    $date = Get-Date -format yyyyMMddHHmm
write-progress -activity "Archiving Data" -status "Progress:"
    If ( -not (Test-Path $archpath)) {ni $archpath -type directory}
    Get-Childitem -Path $path -recurse| Where-Object {$_.LastWriteTime -lt (get-date).AddDays(-$days)} |
    ForEach { $filename = $_.fullname
    try { Move-Item $_.FullName -destination $archpath -force -ErrorAction:SilentlyContinue
    "Successfully moved $filename to $archpath" | add-content $logpath\log-$date.txt }
    catch { "Error moving $filename: $_ " | add-content $logpath\log-$date.txt }

  • ICloud: Will it work with non-iTunes music, converted MP3 files and manually organized library folder?

I have a small question about the new iCloud that was introduced.
I listen to music both on my notebook and on my desktop PC. At the moment I use an external hard drive that I keep with me so my music library exists on both computers. If I'm correct the new iCloud means I no longer need the external hard drive.
    But,
Not all my music was purchased through iTunes. Some things are converted from CD's I bought and the CD is different from the iTunes version. (More songs, other songs,...) What happens with the songs that are different, or music that does not exist (I have a QOTSA CD which is not available outside the US iTunes store, or several LE bonus discs)?
Some local artists are not on the iTunes store. Is it possible to sync those to?
And the most important one, I also listen to my music in my car. It has support for an SD-card but no USB support so I can't hook my iPod. It only accepts MP3 files and it needs correctly filled in ID3 tags to show up nicely. I convert all my music with iTunes to MP3, but I use MusicBrainz to tag my music because I found that the iTunes ID3 tags will not be correctly picked up. I'm quite happy with this approach as it also means that I can organize my music library to my liking instead of the "let's throw all artists in one folder" approach iTunes uses. Is it possible to use the iCloud with my MP3 converted and tagged versions of my Music?
    Thanks.

You can only sync to one iTunes library/computer. If you do sync the iPod is erases and its contents replaced with what is in the iTunes library of the second computer.
    To avoid that see:
Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive: Apple Support Communities
Yes, the 1G works with the latest iTunes.
    To transfer iTunes purchases:

In iTunes 11 use Control+B to show the Menu bar then go to iTunes>File>Devices>Transfer Purchases

  • Moving files and folders in Finder:  any options to simply cut & paste?

My apologies if this has been asked before: I did a search but couldn't find a straight answer.
I'm a new PC-to-Mac convert, but I'm having trouble rearranging files and folders using the drag and drop method. Back in the windows world, I could select multiple files and folders, <ctrl> X to cut, then <ctrl> V to paste in a new location.
Is there any similar method in Finder, other than copying, pasting then deleting the originals?
    tia for any advice!

I have the same question as at the top of this thread, and I want to make sure I understand the answer independent of the discussion of cut/paste nomenclature.
I have a file or files somewhere on my harddrive. I would like to move them to some other location on my harddrive using the Finder without touching the mouse. Basically I want the Finder equivalent of the UNIX mv command. As far as I can tell from playing with files and from this thread, the way to do this in Finder is the following:
    1. Highlight the file or files you want to move.
    2. Type command-C.
    3. Navigate to the destination folder.
    4. Type command-V.
    5. Navigate back to the original folder from step 1.
    6. Highlight the files from step 1 again.
    7. Type command-delete.
Steps 5-7 seem so needlessly clunky that I feel like there must be a better way to do it that I'm overlooking. As far as I can tell you have to do it this way. (You can't, for instance, type command-delete right after doing the copy in step 2, because this removes the files from the clipboard.) For my money, Microsoft Explorer does have the better user scenario for the keyboard-only-file-move task, regardless of whether you dislike the reuse of the "cut" metaphor.
But Apple vs. Microsoft religious wars are beside the point here. I just want to make sure that I've understood the design of Finder correctly. Is there an easier way to move files in the Finder without touching the mouse, or do I have to install 3rd party software like the kind mentioned upthread?

  • Moved files and both copied and original now Zero Bytes

I copied around 20gb of video files from one external disk to another only to find that both the original files and the newly created ones are now showing file sizes of Zero Bytes and are unplayable. The copying operation looked like it worked fine whilst Finder was working on the files. Any ideas how I can get these working again?

Hope you have a backup! The only way I can see that happening  is if the originals were already zero. Copying should not affect the source. How many files?

  • Aperture 3.0.3, moved files and can't get the from "offline" to "online"

Hi, using Aperture 3.0.3. I moved a previously-imported iphoto directory to a different location. Now of course the images show as "offline" in Aperture. The problem is that I can't get them back online.
I select one or all of the offline photos, and click "Locate Referenced Files". The dialog box pops up and shows volume "back-mac4t" with hundreds of photos "offline". But it doesn't show any thumb nails, or paths to files (that is all of the other columns to the right of the volume remain blank. So I can't select the images and point to the new location to reconnect them.
Any thoughts on this? I could re-import the photos from their new location I suppose but I don't want to lose any retouches or metadata... maybe those would be reimported too?
    Thanks much.

I remember that I had a similar problem, but I'm not sure. It was solved it by holding down the option key when reconnecting my media. Its a file size issue between different volumes.

  • I moved files and lost content, not just links-HELP?

I have an indesign book and chapter files. I have been backing up (I thought) by copying the folder that contains all of these (chapters and book). When I moved the backup folders of old versions of the book, then tryied to open my current version, I have only text boxes. No placed images, no links to missing images.
    HELP?

The .indb file is a collection of pointers to the individual documents, and any copies you make continue to point to the original locations, and those files continue to point to the original links. If you want to make a backup, use the Package command to make copies of everything and change the link and pointer locations.

  • Moving files and folder structures in PSE8

I have a new computer with much more hard disk space.  So now I want to move about 2,000 photos in the organizer from an external hard drive to my local drive.  Easier to work with my photos that way, and I have automatic backup of my hard drive to an internet offsite storage.
When I tried using the File->Move function, the files moved but not the underlying file structure.
Yes, my photos are tagged in the organizer.  But I very much want to preserve the file structure, too.
    Is that possible?
    Jim, San Francisco

    Jim,
You can move your folder structures from folder view in Organizer. Just drag the parent folder in left folder browser to the destination parent.
Let me know if that works for you.

  • I am working in LR 5.7. I am having problems moving files and folders from my internal Mac drive to an external drive.

My process is to drag files or folders from one location to another. Sometimes it works, but it takes a VERY long time. Sometimes it does not work. For example, I tried to move a folder with 329 images. LR processed for 13 hours and moved 58 images; then it stopped and gave the message "…error copying files to the destination you selected. The following files could not be copied." Then it noted the files not copied. Does this look like a LR problem? A hardware problem? Any suggestions on how to fix would be appreciated.

Jim has a very good suggestion. There are many factors at work here:
    1) How are you connecting the external drive to the computer?
    2) How big are files (329 x 1MB is not the same as 329 x 25MB)?
    3) What is your computer specification?
    4) Do you have any power saving settings on (in particular something that would send the computer/hard drives to sleep)?

  • Moving files from one document library to another

I want to move all files which are 30 days old, from one library to another.
What is the best way to do this?
Shall I create a workflow for this or a timer job? I am not sure if we can do this using workflow because I think it works on events and here I need a process that will work continuously (for e.g. every hour or every day etc) and check for files which are
30 days older, and move to different document library (this target library will be in another site collection).
    What do you say?

There are 2-approach I would recommend here,
Either Create SharePoint Timer Job OR Create Windows Service which runs every day and will check the document library for any documents satisfy the 30 days old criteria.
Personally I will always go for Windows service. Reasons are easy to build/install/less downtime and if you use framework like Topshelf then easy to debug. Also it allows you to have configuration for your SharePoint Site/Document library. Libraries like
Serilog allows you to have better structured logs created for your service easily. Multiple instances of the same service running on the same server.
There are few links I want to share with you for kind of similar discussion happened earlier,

I made Backup copies of the iTunes folders
I than draged all the artist folder from E:\My Music\Music and...
I put them in E:\My Music
I than tried several of the methods found on the net to make iTunes recognise the new location. However nothing has worked.
I would like to get back my playlist, date imported, files rates etc, so if there is anyone who knows what I should do please advise.

  • Android Expansion Files and License Verification Library

    Hi all,
I'm strugling with the libraries to verify a person's purchase in order to download play store hosted expansion files.
I got the downloading of expansionfiles and unpacking (from an own domain) down, but since it is for a purchased application and the .obb files will be stored in the play store, I need to check the purchase before I can download (right?).
I'm going by the following article:
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/air/articles/android-licensing-native-extensions.html
After getting all the latest SDK's (Android and AIR) I still get errors from the Adobe provided .java files.
First, the package name of Anroid's
    com.android...LicenseChecker.java
    is changed to:
    com.google.android...LicenseChecker.java
Fine, I can change it's import in com.adobe.air.sampleextensions...AndroidLicenseCheckerCallback.java
    However...
com.adobe.air.sampleextensions...AndroidLicenseCheckerCallback.java then begins to complain about the method LicenseChecker.allow( int ) not being implemented. OK, I can write that method if need be (not quite clear what to fill it with though)
Worse probably is that a number of consts ( CHECK_IN_PROGRESS, INVALID_PACKAGE_NAME ) and s'mores can not be resolved. Maybe because the overridden applicationError's parameter ApplicationErrorCode can not be resolved either... .
    (I got android.jar and FlashRuntimeExtensions.jar linked OK)
    sigh...
Does anyone know of more recent/functioning libraries? Or am I on the wrong track all together?
    Thanks in advance,
    Manno

    [daytime again]
ofcourse the unresolved consts cannot de defined inApplicationErrorCode.
    Still open for advice though...

  • Moving files and getting an error after using locate

I often move files over to external drives to recover space. If I go to a project and get files missing, I then use locate to find the files but when I clcik on the located file I get a file not supported error though it is the same file.

Yes. If I move the same file back to the original location it loads fine. Actually, I can go back to import and I can import the file from the new location and then replace it in the timeline but that is ridiculous.
