Moving files,apps,etc. from iMac8.6 to a Mini

Is this possible? I am trying to upgrade a friends computer from
a iMac 8.6 to a Mini 10.4 and wonder if this is possible the way
I transported files from my G3 to my G4 powerbooks, through firewire?
Put on discs and transport that way?etc.

As said in the other thread where you posted, there are a few ways you can copy material off one system an onto another. The most popular is Firewire Target Disk Mode (as explained here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583) but not all systems can run that way. The mini can, but you need to check that document to see if the specific model of iMac is listed.
If not, then you can copy files etc off using CD if you have a suitable burner the iMac (and version of MacOS) will support, or other media such as Zip or Jazz if these are available, or via ethernet, though this isn't so easy if the iMac is running an earlier version of MacOS that OS X.
In the other thread you mentioned AppleWorks - which will run on a new Mac mini but can't actually be installed on it since the installer requires OS 9/Classic. Thusly, if you have a working copy of AppleWorks 6, you would have to copy the application itself over and it will run in OS X. AppleWorks 5 won't.

I understand how to get my apps to transfer to a new pc. That's not the issue. It's getting ALL the data from the 3GS to the 4 and then to a new computer.

Go to Settings/icloud. The Apple ID at the top of the screen is the only one you need to be concerned about. That one MUST be a working ID, and you must know the password for it, or you will be unable to use the phone if it ever crashes, you want to update it, or you want to sell it.

To restore from an iCloud backup you have to erase the phone and start over. To do this, go to Settings>General>Reset, tap Erase All Content and Settings, then go through the setup assistant again and when given the option, choose Restore from iCloud Backup. There is no other way to do this.
Be sure you phone is connected to wifi and your charger as this is likely to take some time to finish.

Forget the Pendrive stategy...
Before attempting any Major Upgrade... get yourself an External Hard Drive... and create a Bootable Clone Backup of your current Hard Drive...
By far the easiest way to make such a Backup, is to use something like
SuperDuper http://www.shirt-pocket.com/
or CCC http://www.bombich.com/
That way, should anything untoward happen during the Upgrade,
you will NOT LOSE ANYTHING.
(Get an EHD that is at least equal to your current Drive...)
Also, Check here for compatibility of 3rd party Software you may be using...

Do you have the Sync Apps option ticked from under your iPod's Apps tab in iTunes?
Make sure your the installing of Apps is not enabled in Restrictions. Head to Settings -> General -> Restrictions and make sure either all restrictions are off or that at least Installing Apps is.

You can't currently permanently delete purchases, all you can do is hide them so that they are less visible : hiding and unhiding purchases

Does re-downloading and installing Mavericks retain existing files, apps etc.

Yes, your existing files will be retained ... assuming all goes well!
Of course, you should have a complete, thorough backup before attempting a re-install. Hopefully you will not need to use it.

I have installed all the games from my iPhone 3GS at my iPad mini retina throw iCloud. I did what iTunes suggest but when I open the game start from the beginning. Problem with backing up to external hard drive and then " recovering " files, apps etc.

I hope you can help me please, I have messed some things up from not knowing what I was doing : ( and would like to fix them if possible.
I will try to be brief and concise. Here goes....
1. My 2006 iMac 4 running Leopard OSX was starting to run very slowly. My hard drive had 232 GB of which 220 GB were being used. The thing using most space was iPhoto, over 60 GB of photos.
2. I downloaded Mackeeper and ran their cleaning program, getting rid of duplicate files, clearing caches etc. but it didn't release much extra space, just a couple of gigs.
3. I read an article from Maclife " 25 ways to speed up your Mac ". One of the tips was to reinstall the operating system which I did, using the " archive and install " instruction.
4. I now have Leopard OS under a new account name which is running faster but I cannot access various apps such as iPhoto, Photoshop CS4, Keynote, Pages etc.
5. Everything prior to me messing around is now in a folder called " previous system ".
6. I realize now that I should have first bought a new external hard drive, which I now have done ; an Iomega 500 GB with USB 2.0 and that I should have backed up everything first before messing around. Hindsight is a great thing.
7. Having connected the ext. hard drive, I was looking for info on what I should do next when Time Machine kicked in and automatically started copying everything, without me having to do anything such as formatting etc.
8. Everything that was on the hard drive ( 220 GBs ) has been copied to the ext. HD so I hope I haven't lost anything, especially my photos on iPhoto and CS4.
9. Other 3rd party apps haven't been effected but now I would like to integrate everything back into one seamless, quick flowing system.
10. How can I do this ?

UPDATE : I have re-installed from disk, various apps that were no longer functioning such as iLife, iWork etc. So, I now can access my photos again.
Also, I had to re-install all the software for my printer ( Stylus Pro 4880 ) and reset it so the printer is working again.
Photoshop CS4 won't open. I think I will have to get in touch with Adobe as basically, I guess they have a built-in "blocker" which prevents me from opening the app as the license is for only 1 user and having re-installed the OS, there are now, in effect, 2 users ( Me and Me 1, I think ).
So, having added on a new external HD, Time Machine has made a copy of most of the files, folders, apps etc onto the external HD. The internal HD is still nearly full ( 220 GBs out of 232 GBs ).
I am guessing the way to go now in order to free up space on the internal HD is to delete/trash older photos from my iPhoto library and hope that if needed, I will be able to access them on the external HD.
Am I correct ? Please advise before I do something I will regret.

I am working in LR 5.7. I am having problems moving files and folders from my internal Mac drive to an external drive.

My process is to drag files or folders from one location to another. Sometimes it works, but it takes a VERY long time. Sometimes it does not work. For example, I tried to move a folder with 329 images. LR processed for 13 hours and moved 58 images; then it stopped and gave the message "…error copying files to the destination you selected. The following files could not be copied." Then it noted the files not copied. Does this look like a LR problem? A hardware problem? Any suggestions on how to fix would be appreciated.

Jim has a very good suggestion. There are many factors at work here:
1) How are you connecting the external drive to the computer?
2) How big are files (329 x 1MB is not the same as 329 x 25MB)?
3) What is your computer specification?
4) Do you have any power saving settings on (in particular something that would send the computer/hard drives to sleep)?

Moving files on share from Windows results in permission loss

Here's the setup:
-- Leopard, with shared SMB folders; specific user and everyone have read/write permissions for the share
-- Windows machine is accessing the share via the specific user & password, connecting fine
When I access the share from the Windows machine, and move files between folders, the file loses all permissions (they are set to 0000) so it cannot be read by anyone at all. The only way of getting access to them again (from either machine) is to chmod them back to 0644.
Copying files is OK, as is creating files and moving a folder from Win -> Mac. It only affects moving files between folders on the Mac.
Can anyone else confirm this, or is it a setup issue here?

The apple store will do this for you.
You can call apple support and they will help you.
You can type " move itunes library from pc to mac" in the google search bar.
