Moving files/folders in Finder, a headache

10.8 and 10.9 become a headache copying/moving files/folders between disks.
After download selected images to my Imac from cards I used to move all of them to a local network backup disk (attached to a linux OS)
I don't do this anymore from a year ago: annoying warnings like "the file ... is in use" (not in use, even had been downloaded) stopped move; repeated procedure with the rest of the files included the 'used' one, over and over again and finally, after 12 times or so all files had moved. 100 files to move, stop, 80 files to move, stop, 60 files.......
Same problem moving files between disks attached to the same iMac.
'You have to provide an admin password...." -> Continue   Password set and again 'File ... is in use' (not in use, it is just backup file)
Reseting the Mac.  Worse
.'You have to provide an admin password...."  No 'Continue' option, just only 'Ok' that will do.... nothing.
My solution: Terminal: sudo mv source target
I guess Finder has been tought to make life easier, isn't it?

According to reports, if the filing protocol is SMB, you can sometimes work around the problem by forcing a CIFS connection instead. To do that, first disconnect from the file server, then select
          Go ▹ Connect to Server
from the Finder menu bar, or press the key combination command-K. Then enter
cifs://server-address
in the dialog that opens, where server-address is the IP address or domain name of the server.
Some other ideas for solving or working around the problem can be found in this thread. I haven't tested any of them.

    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste (command-V) into the text box that opens, then press return.
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
I've seen an unconfirmed report that the "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you might need to remove it as well, if applicable.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

  • Problems moving files around in finder

Does anyone else have the same problem I do when moving files around in finder. It almost always says you do not have sufficient access privileges and each time I have to go to the destination folder info box and change access permissions. It is now getting really annoying. At work I can not copy files off my laptop to the network as again it says I do not have permission though if I log on from a machine using tiger I can move the files easily. Moving files to my Lacie drive causes the same problem. If anyone out there has and easy fix or explanation I would be grateful

I decided to go the long way and move everything where I wanted it to be.  I moved everything around in Bridge, I then synchronized the folder to reflect how it should.  So far so good!
Thank you all for your help and interest, I really appreciate everything!
I do have one more question now, I will also start a new thread to see what else I can get, but again thank you!
I have syncroniced the folder after making the changes, and due to the problem I was having last time I did it again just to double check.  It said there were over2k photos missing so I clicked sync, let it do its thing.  And just to tripple check I ran it again and it is saying the same thing, missing over 2k photos.  What does this mean?

  • Finder vs LR - moving files/folders

Am still in the starting stages of a large collection.  A LR Catalog has been created, keywords and collections added. Now I see the need for organizing the collection better.  It would be faster to do that in the finder than in LR. Then a new Catalog would be created due to the change in location of photos.  The Keword List and Smart Collections could be exported and re-imported  but with loss of  pointers & heierarchy.  What to do?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Chuck

Important rule of Lightroom usage ... no re-importing (as in never ever ever, don't even think about re-importing, not even once)
Having said that, once you move your photos/folders in your operating system, they will have ? on them in Lightroom. If you right-click on a folder that has a ?, you can reconnect it via "Find Missing Folder", and now Lightroom knows where it is located, and you don't have to worry about how to transfer metadata and collections and so on.
An even better approach, in my opinion, is not to organize via moving photos and folders from here to there. The better approach is to organize via keywords and other metadata, giving you a way to find any photo whatsoever, and you won't even know or care what folder it is in. If you do a thorough job of assigning metadata, then you don't really need folders as an organizational tool. (There are exceptions ... if you need to move your photos/folders to a different hard disk, then by all means you should do so; similarly, if you want all photos in a single location for ease of backup or other reason, then by all means move them)
I suggest if you want better organization, you use keywords and other metadata and not moving folders/photos.

  • BT Cloud.. Moving files & Folders

    Hiya there
Just got my BT Cloud, I'm using there web interface (rather than download yet another program to my computer) and I cannot find out how to move files or create folders.
I have tried selecting a file and it allows the menu with the three dots, but the options that would allow me to move or create a folder are greyed out.
Does anyone have any tips?  Things like this are very simple in programs like dropbox, or even if you have your own FTP space, its almost as if BT Cloud isn't finished yet!
    Andy
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I also am having problems with moving folders
I see on my device the 3 dots but the only two options I see are MOVE TO TRASH and DOWNLOAD but thes e are greyed out so cannot be used. I also see the thre dots on the web screen same thing no facility for making folder or selecting a folder.
secondly I find that all my files have a modified and created date of the date uploaded. what is the use of this. as I cannot find upto date files

  • Why excessive authentication on moving files/folders?

I am rebuilding the main HD in my Mac Pro (OS 10.6.8) from the bottom up. I like to keep my Applications and Utilities folders tidy - all communications-related applications in a Communications subfolder, all back-up utilities in a Backup folder etc. One or two applications and utilities don't like that but I know about those and let them be. I also have my own definition of what distinguishes an application from a utility - if it produces a product separate from itself (Word, Toast etc.) it's an application, if not it's a utility. There are also some cases where this schema does not work but overall this configuration has served me well for many years and Systems up to and including Snow Leopard. I have erased the HD, installed/updated the system and am now at the stage where I begin to impose order on the applications and utilities bundled with the System. This time I find that every move I make, however trivial, needs authentication. This never happened before and has the potential to slow up the rebuild considerably. A potential solution on the MacRumours site <http://tinyurl.com/6c45jmr> had no effect. Any ideas about causes or - even better - solutions?

I think you will get an idea of what is going on if you do a "get info" on the Applications folder, and then on your user home folder, and compare the two with respect to permissions.
You'll see you have Read/Write privileges for your home folder, but only the System/Admin has that privilege for the Applications folder. So you have to authenticate when you try to change things within the Applications folder.
With Snow Leopard, Apple is discouraging individuals doing the type of "customization" you are attempting, and this has been carried even further with 10.7 (Lion), where the Library folder is even made invisible by the OS.
If you move programs around from within the Applications and Utilities folders, in particular Apple's programs, then Apple's updaters may not work properly. So Apple is discouraging you from doing this.
This is also a Security measure, since some of the malware for Macs does its thing by moving and modifying programs inside the Applications and Utilities folders. So Apple requires an Admin password every time.
None of this would really concern me except the idea of interfering with future system updates from Apple would be enough to keep me from doing what you are doing. In fact, the specific location of a program inside the Applications or Utilities folders does not really matter. Typically one runs a program from the dock, from an alias, or by double clicking on a file, and fishing around to find the application itself is not really necessary. You sound a little particular about where things are located on your Mac, which is fine, but when it starts to interfere with OS system updates, it might be time to rethink your strategy.

  • Please help - New to Mac - File managment.. moving files, folders, deleting

Hello, I am hoping someone can help me...
I have just got one of the 24" iMacs at work and I have never worked on Mac before. I am having problems with documents/files.
I have made new folders in my "documents" folder but I cannot move/drag files into the folders. I also cant delete files from the documents folder.
I have spent the last 4 hours reading tutorials etc and still can't figure this out. I am guessing it's probably simple... but I just can't seem to find the answer.
    PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

There are two documents folders. One shared among all user and a personal documents folder.
To get to the system folder you double click on the machintosh hd. You will see the system documents folder here. If you are not logged on with system administrator privileges, the files will be read only. To tell if you have administrator privileges, do:
apple icon > system preferences > accounts
click on your account and see if the allow user to administer this computer box is checked.
One way get your person documents folder, you double click on the machintosh hd. Next, click on the little house icon on the lower left side of the screen. This will get to all your personal files and folders. One of the folders is your documents folder.
I agree with the prior poster to find someone who has worked with the mac before to give you a quick tutorial.
I suggest you visit the local library or book store and checkout or buy a book on using Mac OS Tiger.

  • Moving files/folders in Folder view to new drives/partions etc?

If I open the Organizer in Folder view mode & drag a folder or individual pictures to another location will each the pathway to each individual picture be updated by PSE 10?  The reason that I ask is that I would like the Organizers pathway to better reflect the actual locations of my Hard drive.
If this works will doing this also work across different hard drives & partitions?
It would be nice to end up with folder sub folder tree to closely reflect that of the Organizer

    Yes just drag and drop.
It’s easier putting everything in say My Pictures. Sometimes external hard drives are right at the bottom of the left hand panel and dragging whilst expanding the tree can be a bit tricky.

I have been having the most difficult times with the use of iPhoto Booth for recording movie files of church services. It seems if I make a rename on the files, for some odd reason, I cannot find it in any of my Files Folders in Finder. I need to know is there a more simple way to retrieve movie files thru iPhoto Booth or is there something I may can download to fix this issue? Also, is there a way the videos can be flipped around to not a mirror image, but to a reverse camera? Please anyone who recognizes this problem, contact me ASAP. Thank you for your support!

You used the data.  Verizon can not see what it was sued for.  However your phone can see whats apps used the data.  go to settings-data usage- there will be a place that says data usage cycle.  line the dates up with your cycle.  then there will be a bar graph below that   extend bother white bars one all the way to the left and one all the way to the right.  after those are extended below that will be a list of apps,  there should be one that used over 2 gb and that will show you what app used that data in her purse

  • Moving files and folders in Finder:  any options to simply cut & paste?

My apologies if this has been asked before: I did a search but couldn't find a straight answer.
I'm a new PC-to-Mac convert, but I'm having trouble rearranging files and folders using the drag and drop method. Back in the windows world, I could select multiple files and folders, <ctrl> X to cut, then <ctrl> V to paste in a new location.
Is there any similar method in Finder, other than copying, pasting then deleting the originals?
    tia for any advice!

I have the same question as at the top of this thread, and I want to make sure I understand the answer independent of the discussion of cut/paste nomenclature.
I have a file or files somewhere on my harddrive. I would like to move them to some other location on my harddrive using the Finder without touching the mouse. Basically I want the Finder equivalent of the UNIX mv command. As far as I can tell from playing with files and from this thread, the way to do this in Finder is the following:
    1. Highlight the file or files you want to move.
    2. Type command-C.
    3. Navigate to the destination folder.
    4. Type command-V.
    5. Navigate back to the original folder from step 1.
    6. Highlight the files from step 1 again.
    7. Type command-delete.
Steps 5-7 seem so needlessly clunky that I feel like there must be a better way to do it that I'm overlooking. As far as I can tell you have to do it this way. (You can't, for instance, type command-delete right after doing the copy in step 2, because this removes the files from the clipboard.) For my money, Microsoft Explorer does have the better user scenario for the keyboard-only-file-move task, regardless of whether you dislike the reuse of the "cut" metaphor.
But Apple vs. Microsoft religious wars are beside the point here. I just want to make sure that I've understood the design of Finder correctly. Is there an easier way to move files in the Finder without touching the mouse, or do I have to install 3rd party software like the kind mentioned upthread?

  • Looking for an app to toggle "Invisibility" on certain files/folders (without moving)

Hello! I'm looking for an app (OSX Mavericks 10.9.5) that can allow me to easily right-click on any file or folder and make it invisible or hidden
I have my MacBook Pro setup in a way that just makes things easier for me with music production.. I would like to be able to "Hide" a bunch of folders/files that have to do with my music directories..
The reason for this is that some of these files/folders may only be used once a year (if that).. but they're critical enough to what I do that I need to be sure that they're always on-hand and available when I need them.. I'm pretty good with computers and already have an Alfred 2 workflow set up to toggle "Show/Hide Hidden Files/Folders", so I'm not the type to "Hide" something and then freak out when I can't find it, without at least knowing to check "Show Hidden Files/Folders" first lol..
I *DO NOT* want an app that will be physically moving the files or folders anywhere else but their current locations!
I need recommendations for an app that can meet the following criteria (for those too lazy to read so far):
    -Quick and Simple
-Does not require me to drag my selection to the dock or have any extra windows open
-Does not move files or folders from current location
-Does not cause interference with program/system files
-Can be accessed via right-clicking on what it is you want hidden/invisible
    Any suggestions?

  • Moving files and folders in the Library module

I teach a lot of LR users and one area that's consistantly frustrating and unintuitive (even to some experienced users) are the rules for moving files and folders around in the Library module. I'm not sure I have all the right answers/suggestions/remedies but here are the basic points worth examining:
    1) Additional hard drives aren't listed unless images from it have been imported into Lightroom. It would be nice if people could add a new hard drive without importing files from it. People don't get it that you can select "Add Folder" from the Folders pop up menu. Classic example: Say someone has purchased a new hard drive for archiving purposes. It's empty and they want to drag folders of images onto it from within LR. Possible Solution: include a "Add Drive..." option from the Folder's panel + pop-up menu that would behave the same and add a root level folder.
    2) One can't drag more than one folder at a time. While I assume this is designed to prevent accidental mass movement it would be nice if one could enable the movement of multiple folders.
    3) One can't drag a folder onto the main drive bar that lists the drive's name and capacities - one has to drag onto a folder within a drive. I'd love to be able to drag a folder onto the root level of a drive by dropping onto the drive bar (this would be similar to the MacOS finder).
    4) Sometimes the root level of a drive isn't apparent. One may need to right click on a folder and select "Show Parent Folder" to show the root level folder which is named after the volume. Showing a root "folder" that has the same name as the drive is also confusing to people since there isn't actually a folder on the hard drive with that name.  I completely understand why folders are hidden by default and I'm not sure the remedy is but, again, this isn't intuitive for new users. If #3 worked as described perhaps we could have root level access without the root folder?

Perhaps I should add that I really like and appreciate a lot of the decisions that have already been implemented into the Library's Folder's tab. Moving files instead of copying them, showing only folders that contain imported images, the ability to show or hide parent folders.... Bravo!

  • LR5 stopped moving files between folders

    Hi everybody,
I've noticed today that my LR5 stopped moving files between folders, I select files I want to move and drag them over to a new location like I always did before with only difference is now nothing happends, no messages with errors, nothing... I tried to google it and couldn't find anything related to my problem.
I'm using Windows 8 x64. I checked the permissions on all the photo folders and everything seems to be correct. I also run LR under admin rights, so there shouldn't be any OS related issues... in addition, it was working just fine till today.
I hope you can at least point me in right direction to dig more info on the problem with my LR5.
    Thx!

  • Moving files between folders is very slow

Hi, I have an iMac 2011. Processor: 2.7GHz Intel Core i5/ Memory 4GB
    OS X Yosemite, version 10.10.1
After I change my OS from Mavericks to Yosemite, moving files between folders is very slow.
For example, if I move one jpg file in Desktop to Pictures folder (or just any other folders like Trash), it takes about 3 seconds.
When I was still using Mavericks, it made that Ding sound and transferred files right away. However, now, although it makes the Ding sound right away, the file is still there for 3 seconds.
I tried to clean up my mac using many apps, but they never fixed this problem.
I've also tried what I saw on this one thread. OS X File Transfers Very Slow
Go->Connect to Server then type "cifs://server-address" but it says there is a problem and did nothing. (maybe different issue)
    Please help!

There may be other issues, but you installed the "Genieo" or "InstallMac" ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it.
Back up all data before making any changes.
Besides the files listed in the linked support article, you may also need to remove this file in the same way:
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.ltvbit.plist
If there are other items with a name that includes "Genieo" or "genieo" alongside any of those you find, remove them as well.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, then you may have one of the other kinds of adware covered by the support article. Follow the rest of the instructions in the article.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. Chances are you got it from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates
    if it's not already checked.

  • IBook need a diet. How to find biggest files/folders?

Hi -- this may seem like a silly question, but is there a way to search for the largest files/folders on my iBook (latest version of Tiger)? I'd like to find the offending bloat and get rid of it.
A couple of weeks ago, I had 20GB left, now I've got 14GB, and I don't know what I've done to get there. I've done the "get info" thing on various folders, but haven't found any that are particularly bloated.
Is there an app (preferably freeware, natch.) that can search for apps/files/folders by size? Or is this a capability that's already in Tiger?
    Thanks!

You can also use Terminal to find big directories.
The following command finds the top-10 directories:
    du -S | sort -nr | head
Please note that I am using the fink version of du.
