Moving files from a Power mac 7600

Hi,
My friend's Dad has 2 Macs, a power mac 7600 and a iMac.
He would like to get a bunch of files off a power macintosh 7600 on to an external hard drive, to be accessed on the imac. Is this possible and what external hard drive would you recommend?
Thanks for any insights!
cheers!
davej

Whew, this isn't going to be easy at all of the 4 ways I can think of due to the ports involved on both ends!
1. Compressing them & eMailing them if the 7600 connects to the Internet.
2. Ethernet & File Sharing, not easy to connect the 2 but possible.
OSX.4.x lost the file transfer ability of Appletalk... 10.1.5 thru 10.3.9 had it!
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301183
With OS9 set with Appletalk to using TCP/IP, and or Chooser>AppleShare+IP, you can connect to the 10.4.8 machine.
Another solution is OpenDoor's $39 Shareway IP, (some OS7, 8, 9 releases had a limited version included)...
http://www.opendoor.com/shareway/
Which makes OS9 Tiger compatable.
"Mac OS X 10.4 and later don't support Personal File Sharing (or other AFP) over Appletalk, though by initiating the connection from the opposite direction you could still achieve an IP connection from a Mac OS 8 computer to a sharing Mac OS X computer. The Network preference pane in Mac OS X 10.4 and later still offers the AppleTalk checkbox, but it is for browsing AppleTalk-advertised resources and zones. The subsequent connection must be over TCP/IP."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106461
3. Finding a hard to find SCSI external Drive & an even harder to find  Firewire<->SCSI converter.
4. Via Floppy Disk & Finding a USB Floppy for the newer on. Can't remember if they had an Internal Floppy on the 7600.

For your addressbook, export the files to vCard on the PowerMac, then bring them over to your Mac Pro. For your iPhoto, copy the Users -> yourname -> Pictures folder to your Desktop on the Mac Pro, and open iPhoto on the Mac Pro holding the command and option keys.  Select the library file from that Pictures folder and open it.  It should import all the pictures into iPhoto as part of the rebuild process.  Other PowerPC to Intel migration issues are covered here: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2295

  • Moving files from outlook to mac

I'm switching from a PC to Mac.  How do I move or export email files from outlook to mac.  My email account is IMAP at Gmail.

    Hi Ed,
If you're using IMAP there's no "export" necessary as all of the emails are stored on the GMail mail servers and just made available to you locally. Now, if you've opted to create local (offline) folders for archiving purposes that's different.
Regrettably there's no easy to way to move from Outlook into Mail, for free. There's a program you can buy called Outlook2Mac.

For $13 it's a great program. There are some work arounds but it involves using Thunderbird.

  • See and copy files from a Power Mac without keyboard and monitor

A friend gave me his G4 Power Mac. I think it is a Quicksilver. (I will post some pics of both the front and back on Flickr if anyone wants to see it.) I didn't get the keyboard or monitor cuz I forgot I would need the keyboard to use Firewire Target Disc mode on it. I just need to see what files are on it (and probably copy whatever ones I need onto my newer Powerbook.)
I have a 17" Powerbook G4 DL and a Powerbook Firewire (500mhz, running OS 9.2.2), and another G4 Power Mac ADP set up to always start up in Firewire Target Mode so I can use it like an external drive (which I never do...) and a bunch of older Macs (LC 580, SE...)
How can I get onto this new machine? I need to see what files are on there. I do not have access to another monitor but I might be able to borrow a USB keyboard so I can start it up in Target Mode. Is there anything I can do before I scrounge for a USB keyboard?
I have tried connecting by Firewire and ethernet with both Powerbooks. The Power Mac isn't showing up either way. I am pretty sure it has a CD drive but pushing on the door (one of two on the front) doesn't open it up.
I am assuming the Power Mac is running OSX.
    Many thanks.
    Cheers,

I think it is a Quicksilver
It may be easier to look at the rear panel for some labeling. It may be silk-screened on with white paint and a bit hard to see.A four-digit model number with "M" as a leader will pretty much nail down the model without taking photos that may not show much.Quicksilvers can have models number M8360, M8493, or M8493 depending on the config.
For snopping the drive, it may be easier to pull the drive from the G4 and use one of these extremely handy gadgets:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/U2NV2SPATA/
to mount the bare G4 drive on your working PowerBook with OSX. It will show up on the PB as an external drive and you can see what's there. The adaptor will be serviceable for more than just checking this hard drive. Anyone with multiple Macs will get a lot of use from it.
Remember that some third-party keyboards do not recognize Mac start-up key combos, and that some current Aluminum Apple boards may not work correctly with older Macs. The Al board with numeric keypad (here) says it will work with Tiger. The wireless ones and the short "non-keypad" version require Leopard or higher.

  • Folder settings when moving files from pc to mac

Hi all. I have a embarassingly simple question, but I just haven't been able to figure it out on my own or find the answer under the search function. I recently got my first mac (a macbook pro, osx lion), and I've just gotten around to transferring some of my old pc files to the new macbook.
I had thought all I had to do was to drag and drop the files onto an external hard drive and then drag onto the desktop of the macbook (for example, the My Documents folder, etc.), and that's exactly what I did.
Here's my issue: when I open the "My Documents" on the desktop, the window is completely empty (Get Info shows that I am supposedly able to read&write). However, when I go to Finder > All My Files, I do see files from my pc, and the extension bar says that they are located in Desktop > My Documents.
So what gives? Is there a view/preference setting I haven't quite figured out yet? For organizational purposes, I would prefer not to sort through the files from my pc in the All My Files window.

  • Time capsule for moving files from PC to MAC?

    Hello,
Any know if I can use the time capsule to move all my files from my PC to Mac?

I don't see a response to your last question, so I will chime in, as I have the same issue. I just bought a Macbook and have an old PC. I would like to use my Time Capsule to back up my PC and then transfer these files to my Mac. I read another post that said I should be able to do this by going through my PC "My Network Files" then adding my TC's address. However, when I do this is pops up my e-mail address and asks for a password. I put in the one associated with that particular e-mail address, but it won't accept it. When I tried the one I use for my Mac it then says the folder I am trying to access if not available. Any thoughts on how to proceed?

  • Moving files from PC to Mac System

I want to move all my old PC files stored on my NAS to my new MAC system. How do I make those files readable to the MAC? Do I need to reformat the NAS?

    llangstom,
I am curious.... have you already tried?  or is this more of a theoretical question?  I would be surprised if your macintosh was unable to see the files on the NAS.  I would be less surprised if you needed some software to open the file.  IF the files are word files and Excel files then you should be able to use programs from the iWork suite to open and view the files (or any of the free office suites like LibreOffice).
If you have pther kinds of files it would be helpful to know what they are.
    All the best...

  • Moving files from pc to mac - directory structure gets all messed up - help

Hi, I just got my new Mac Book Pro (mid-2009) and I am having trouble bringing over my 70gb of data from my old pc. I am using VM Fusion and have also downloaded NTFS-3G. I cloned my PC HD onto an external USB HD (formatted with NTFS) and have plugged it into the Mac. I can mount the drive, read and write files from the drive, but when trying to copy files, it would start, but would not finish the job (threw an error after 50mb saying something about trouble copying a file and then froze). I called apple and they said try to do the copying through Fusion. I have one large Mac partition, no Windows partitions on my Mac drive and am running Fusion with XP Pro. I tested the copy function in Windows from my external HD to the "documents" directory in my Mac directory under my user node and small directories (.1 - 2gb) copied fine. But when I tried to copy a 20gb node, it started putting subfolders in random places within the tree structure under the root node I was copying. With 92,000 files, its hard to go re-sort the sub-folders into the right places. Why is it doing this and is there a better way? I'm leaving for 2 wk trip tomorrow and don't want to have to lug my PC with me. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks very much. Larry

You are not in a MacBook forum.
And I would use Boot Camp to set aside a Windows partition and install Windows natively.
Fusion can run Windows on the Boot Camp partition just fine.
MacFuse + 3G? or there is Paragon NTFS 7 for Mac OS X. Sometimes free is fine, sometimes commercial product. And Snow Leopard may have ability to read HFS+ from Windows (like MacDrive7/8 only that can write to HFS+ also).
    Corrupt directory?
    Bad filenames?
Filenames that are valid for Mac Extended may not be valid on NTFS, but haven't heard of the reverse being a problem.

  • Moving files from PC to Mac

how do you move files from a pc to a mac ( my documents , my pictures, I tunes)

I think I understand. *My Documents* is on your Windows desktop isn't it? That's actually a shortcut to the real *My Documents* folder so you aren't actually copying a folder of documents, you are copying a file that the Mac doesn't understand. Double click on your *My Documents* folder so that the actual folder is opened and then copy those folders inside it to the Mac.
You can tell the difference between a shortcut and a real folder or file because a shortcut has a badge in the bottom corner to denote that it is a shortcut. Note: the Mac OS has a similar feature called an alias that performs a similar task of pointing to where the actual file is located.

  • Moving files from PC to MAC - what goes wrong?

And how can i get access to these files? Had to return my laptop at work (PC) and backed everything up to my external HD...brought it home, plug it in to my MAC, and all the important documents will not open. Some word documents that were in zip files seem ok...can these files that won't open be repaired? I tried the NEO program, same thing, they ask what to convert them to.
PLEASE GUYS, throw me some clues!
Could it be because the drive is in a win format? But, some other type files do work!

Does the drive mount when plugged into another PC?
How is the drive formatted? FAT32 or NTFS?
FAT32 is the most compatible PC format (it can be read and written to). However, it is an older format for devices. NTFS is the newer preferred format for big hard drives on Windows. The caveat is that other systems (OS X or Linux) can generally only read from these drives. In my experience, devices formatted with NTFS are also more troublesome if there is any sort of error in the filesystem that has not been corrected.
Your best bet is to format the drive as FAT32 in Windows and recopy the files again to the hard drive. It should mount with no problems when plugged into your Mac.
