Moving files from one user to another

Good afternoon all!
In short I need to create a new user on a MacBook Pro running 10.7 (latest updates available as of this posting). However in the past when I have done this, when I moved the needed files (Photoshop actions, images, etc) over to the new user I kept getting permission errors which makes sense.
So my question is simply, how do I migrate data from one user account to another while either modifying or fixing permission issues?
Thanks!

Copy all the data files into /Users/Share as the old user then log in as the new user and copy the files from /Users/Share to the home folder.

How do you copy files from one user to another user on the same machine?

open your home folder in finder move file to public, log into other account, click the go tab on the finder menu, select computer, your hard drive (Macintosh HD Default)>Users, the origonal user> public and drag that file to your specified folder.
    hope it works

How can I move a batch of files from one drive to another using Bridge CS4?

There are two methods.  One involves your operating system and the other uses Bridge.
Using Microsoft (sorry to you Mac users) have Windows Explorer open to the directory containing your files.  Click and drag the directory from one drive to another.  Conversely if you want to copy just a selection of the files follow this routine.
Create a duplicate named directory in the destination drive.  Select the file you wish to move and do so from directory to directory.
In Bridge it is even easier.  In Bridge ensure that the Folders sub pane is open and visibile.  Just click on the source directory and click and drag it to the destination drive.
Testing on my part (I routinely move up to 30 gigabytes at a time) has demonstrated that Bridge adds a little time to the process depending on the size of the source files.  I suspect that this has to do with additional overhead of the program.
To be safe I would recommend that you do use the copy method instead of moving the directory.  This is a failsae in case any problems crop up during the process.  It takes mere moments to delete the source directory after the copy routine has run.

  • Moving mail from one user to another

I am moving from my old iMac to a newer eMac. The eMac had been used by a housemate for Mail, and I have now set up a separate user account for them so they can access this older Mail. However, I am having trouble getting the "Mail" folder into the new user account.
I found it in the first user ~/Library/ and dragged it to the "Shared" user folder. Then I switched to the second user; where I can see it but not open it.
I then tried putting it directly in the MacHD directory, with the same result.
How do I move the info from one user to another?

How does one change ownership of a file?
The only way to do it in the Finder is doing File > Get Info (⌘I), changing the Ownership & Permissions settings, then clicking Apply to enclosed items. Problem is, this changes more than is needed and is not the most appropriate way of doing it.
Alternatively, Terminal can be used to issue a command that changes what must be changed and only that. The exact command to use would depend on what the situation exactly is and what exactly do you want to do, though, which I don’t know yet...
I want to move this out.
(I will later move mine in from another computer).
    Not sure what you mean.

  • Moving Files from one project to another??

New to Aperture ..and wondering is there an easy way to move files from one project to another? Or to move from one Album one project to another Album in another project if the Albums have the same name?
    thanks in advance,

Yes, simply drag-and-drop a thumbnail from a Project to another Project; or Option-drag-and-drop (one way copies the image, the other way moves the image).
Or to move from one Album one project to another Album in another project if the Albums have the same name
Although Albums can be located in Projects, Albums are really not "in" Projects as regards where the images come from. Each album is simply a virtual collection of pointers to images; the images pointed to can be located in multiple Project(s). So just drag-and-drop a thumbnail image from any project to an album to add a pointer for that image to that album.
Although it seems complex it really isn't. Albums are a very powerful organizational tool with essentially zero overhead. Try it. Create some test albums in various ways just to see what happens and delete the albums when you are done. Since Albums consist of just "pointers" we can make/delete them at will for any reason.
Note that Albums can be deleted with no warning message because Apple figures a simple collection of pointers is not that big a deal. Personally I think Album-deleting should have a (non-dire) explanatory warning message, because sometimes an album can consist of a complex collection of pointers.
Multiple Albums should never have the same name.

  • Moving files from one folder to another caused freeze

I now have a list of files stuck in the center of my screen.
I'm sure a reboot will fix this (I hope!) but I thought it was a bug worth reporting.
All I did was move a copy a collection of files from one folder to another folder.  It made the "move" sound, and the files have been copied, but something clearly went wrong

Have java.io.File objects pointing to the three folders. Get the list of all the files in the folder. Start a loop and check if the filename ends with Data.dat. If it is so then copy file to the final folder.
To Copy file you can use any of the two approaches.
    1. You can read that file as byte stream (java.io.FileInputStream) and write it to the other folder as bytes (java.io.FileOutputStream).
    2. You can use shell commands to do this. (java.lang.Runtime.exe() method)

  • How can I transfer files from one user to another user?

    I have a Macbook Air with 10.9.5.
I have two admin users.  I want to transfer all the files from User A to User B's profile so that I can get rid of User A and just use User B from now on.  So far I can access the files if I change sharing permissions but the files are not under the root User B's folder still.   Any ideas on how to do this?  I also have greyed out folders when I created User B in the root directory.
Root folder /UserA/  includes all the usual folder links like desktop, documents, etc,  including some created one for example "myoldphotos".   When i created UserB/ it has all the desktop, documents, etc folders (but with nothing in them since it's new) but also the myoldphotos folder, except it's greyed out and I can't do anything with it at all or open it or anything. it's just there?

Thank you, that worked to transfer files.  After I move it into my normal home folder, can I delete it from the Shared folder?
Also if anyone has any ideas on the greyed out folders I would be thankful.  For example I moved the 'myoldphotos' folder from users/UserA to users/Shared then from there to users/UserB  and it worked.  HOWEVER, the greyed out mysterious folder is still there and i can't do anything about it.  It also affected my new copied folder, changing the name from myoldphotos to "myoldphotos 2"  like as if there IS a folder there with the same name already.   I can't click on the greyed out folder to open it or anything.

  • How to copy files from one user to another on same macbook pro

I used the migration assistant to move files from an old windows pc to my new macbook pro.  It created a second user and put everything there.  I now can't figure out how to move them so they are under me.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The easiest way is to put your files in /Users/Shared. To access to this folder, open a Finder window, select the Go menu (on the menu bar) > Go to Folder, and type that directory.
That folder can be read by all users, so you won't have any problem to copy your files to the other user account.
Another option would be to copy your files to an external drive. Also, see > https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-5472

  • How do i move files from one user to another user?

i transferred files, etc. from an ibook G4 to my new macpro. i had 3 users on the older ibook. when i try to open files as one of the users from the ibook on my macpro, it says i do not have permission to open the files. i am the administrator on both computers. i would like to do away with all users and merge everything and re-organize into files.

You can go to /Users - select the other user folder - do a Command+I (Get Info) on it. Toggle open Permissions. Click the lock to allow changes. Hit the + sign at the bottom and add yourself to the list. Change the permissions next to your name to read and write. Under the gear menu select apply to enclosed items.
Close the Get Info window and repeat with all other user folders.
Now you cou can copy all the data to your own User and get rid of the other User directories.

  • How can I transfer or make readable files from one user to another on the same iMac

I have migrated files from a windows PC to my Imac. The transferred files have been saved successfully against a new user (which I can access). How can I make those files available to the all users of my Imac?

In FINDER, drag and drop the files into the Public Folder.  All Users can then access those files.
    Hope this helps

  • Moving files from one partition to another

I originally posted this in the Mountain Lion section, but maybe this is where I should have tried first.
I have  a song in the iTunes library of the Snow Leopard side of my Hard Drive. It plays well. However, I want to move it to the Mountain Lion side of my Hard Drive. The problem is, it doesn't play very well there; in fact, it's more like static and screech than a song. I recorded it with an older version of iTunes and in the Snow Leopard environment, but I want to move it to the latest version of iTunes in the Mountain Lion side of my Hard Drive.
I thought I had solved the problem. I played the song and recorded it again using WireTap Studio (a sound recording and editing program). I then mailed it to myself, and I opened it in the Mountain Lion partition. Unfortunately, although I had expected that to do the trick, the song file I opened in Mountain Lion was just as bad as before. What else can I try? I had thought of burning the song into a CD  in the Snow Leopard side and then moving it to my Mountain Lion side using WireTap Studio again. Would that work? If not, what can I do?
    iDVD 7.1.1 (1150)

I've been spending a great deal of time trying to get the definitive answer, but I keep running into things I just don't understand; nevertheless, I couldn't find any differences between the recordings that make them sound so different. I looked at many song files, but I'll just mention some  in the notes I have at hand.
    (1) Recording from YouTube (The quality is fine): 4.9 MB, 128 kbps, MPEG aud., 44,100 kHz
[This is about the same as the recordings I have in Snow Leopard that could be transferred to Mountain Lion without loss of quality]
    (2) The recording that sounds great in Snow Leopard but terrible in Mountain Lion: 8.8 MB, 173 kbps, MPEG aud., 44,100 kHz.
When I tried using VLC, the following message appeared on my screen: VLC Media Player cannot open files in the MPEG audio layer 3 format. I might add that when I tried "right-clicking," I was given the choice of at least ten programs (Flip, Quicktime, RealPlayer, iTunes, etc., but none that I tried were useful (I still haven't tried the high-powered "safecracking" programs I have somewhere.
That's it for me today. I don't want to say how much time I've already spent on this, but I'm exhausted, so I'm heading for the gym. Bench presses are easier on the system.

  • Moving files from one catalog to another in Organizer 8

I have photos and videos that are very different I want in seperate Catalogs. They are currently in separate Albums. How can I more one Album from Catalog 1 to Catalog 2. Help is of no help.

    Hi,
I am not sure whether any other way exists, but I have a way out.
    1. Your catalog is by default located at ProgramData\Adobe\Elements Organizer\Catalogs\Your_Catalog_Name\
    2. Make a copy of your catalog at the same location.
    3. Launch EO.
    4. Go to File>Catalog and choose the copied catalog and open,
    5. Now delete one album from it, say Album 1.
    6. From the other catalog delete Album 2.
Thus you will have to catalogs, one having Album1 and other having Album 2.
