Moving files from USB drive (iPod in disk mode) stops and hangs Finder

I’m having trouble trying to copy a load of music files from my iPod to my new MacBook. The iPod is in disk mode so I’m just using it to move a load of MP3 files from my old PC to my MacBook. They copied from the PC fine and are sat in a fold on the iPod (which I boot into disk mode and connect to my MacBook running Leopard 10.5.5).
The disks mount fine and I can read and playback the files, but when I start to copy them to my MacBook after a minute or too the progress bar stops and it just sits there. I have thousands of file that I need to move and even tried to move say 100 at a time, but after the first few hundred it just stops again.
I have to force quit the finder, but this then hangs the finder unless I disconnect my iPod and then the finder starts back up but warns me that I have removed a driver without first ejecting it.
My iPod is a Video model 5.5 80GB which I connect via USB 2.0 to my MacBook. Anyone got any ideas why copying the files isn’t working?

Thanks for those suggestions. I have tried copying them one by one, but with over 6000 files it’s just not feasible to do this. I don't think adding more memory will help as my MacBook is the new Aluminum model with a 2.0GHz processor and 2GB. I have also tried connecting the same iPod to a Mac Pro with dual 2.8GHz processors, 4GB memory and a set of RAID hard drives and this also has the same problem as my MacBook.
Also, none of the files have any DRM protection.

  • Computer freezes when moving files from USB, or to another partitioned HD

Hello, i've been moving files from two USB's to my Macintosh HD, and when I do that, the computer kinda freezes up, i can move the cursor, but not kinda click anywhere, and then a minute after or something, it gets normal again, but the transfer is going horribly slow. this happens when i move from Macintosh HD, to Macintosh HD 2 (a partitioned one). the files are 2 gb each USB. which means im transferring 4 gb at the time.

I have 6 folders on my hard drive. These folders were created by downloading a bunch of rar files, then extracting them each to their own folder. I have not touched the permissions, so they should be the default of me having read/write and everyone else having read (correct me if i'm wrong).
Using two Finder windows, I drag and drop the six folders from one hard drive to another, and hold down the Apple key so that it moves instead of copies. I let go and it starts copying the files (since there is no "move", but rather a "copy and then delete").
I would recommend you don't use this method to move a lot of files between drives. it's much safer first to copy and if the copy is successful to delete the original afterward. there was a data loss bug in OS X a while back that wold sometimes lead to total loss on both the source and the target when doing this.
this bug is supposed to be long fixed but still...
How is the hard drive you are moving the files to formatted? what yo describe sometimes happens when moving a lot of stuff to or from FAT formatted drives. also, repair both drives in disk utility. repair disk, not permissions.

  • Moving files from one drive to another

How can I move a batch of files from one drive to another using Bridge CS4?

There are two methods.  One involves your operating system and the other uses Bridge.
Using Microsoft (sorry to you Mac users) have Windows Explorer open to the directory containing your files.  Click and drag the directory from one drive to another.  Conversely if you want to copy just a selection of the files follow this routine.
Create a duplicate named directory in the destination drive.  Select the file you wish to move and do so from directory to directory.
In Bridge it is even easier.  In Bridge ensure that the Folders sub pane is open and visibile.  Just click on the source directory and click and drag it to the destination drive.
Testing on my part (I routinely move up to 30 gigabytes at a time) has demonstrated that Bridge adds a little time to the process depending on the size of the source files.  I suspect that this has to do with additional overhead of the program.
To be safe I would recommend that you do use the copy method instead of moving the directory.  This is a failsae in case any problems crop up during the process.  It takes mere moments to delete the source directory after the copy routine has run.

I am trying to pull files off usb port, where do I plug in and how do I access the files?

You connect the drive to any USB port on the computer or keyboard, and then select it from the desktop, Finder's sidebar, or Computer in the Go menu.

  • Problem moving files from USB to Network Drive

I moved my music data from an USB drive to a NAS drive in the network. This also changed the drive letter assigned to the iTunes Music Folder location.
I updated the location in iTunes after moving the files.
But iTunes does not find the files any more.
The file structure is 1:1 and the only thing that changed is the drive letter going from E:\... to L:\...
Any chance to get the references restored? Since I did make edits in the database (such as Genre, BPM, etc) and created many playlists I am wondering what kind of trick I can use or what I did wrong.
    Thanks for any advise.

    Hi,
is it possible that the HD was configured as a 'Dynamic Disk' when created in Windows ?
Macs do have problems with these kind of HDs.

  • [Solved] Delete files from usb drive connected to wireless router

    Hello,
I have a home network with Samba for file sharing.
I have a Netgear router with a Western Digital 2TB external drive attached to the router.
I installed Samba according to the arch wiki and everything works fine but I cannot delete or access some files from the shared USB drive.
I access the file as follows:
    $ cd /mnt/smbnet/WORKGROUP/READYSHARE/USB_Storage/

The USB drive is Western Digital My Book 2 TB drive attached as a NAS to the router that shares it.  I installed Samba on the arch machine so I can access and backup various home computers onto the NAS.
Here is some info I just found on the Western Digital Support site:
The Western Digital units mentioned above use a proprietary file system and cannot be reformatted as FAT32, NTFS, or a Mac File System.
The file system on the WD My Cloud EX2, WD My Cloud EX4, WD My Cloud, WD My Book Live, WD My Book Live Duo, WD ShareSpace, WD ShareSpace, WD TV Live Hub, My Net N900 Central, WD My Book World Edition, WD NetCenter hard drives support access from Windows, Mac and most Linux based computer systems through a SAMBA network sharing connection.
I thought I would mention that I can access the NAS and write, read and execute from the drive.
    $ cd /mnt/smbnet/WORKGROUP/READYSHARE/USB_Storage/
    [edgar@arch USB_Storage]$ mkdir Test
    [edgar@arch USB_Storage]$ ls
    BACKUPS Test WD

    This is a test.

    [edgar@arch Test]$ cd ..
    [edgar@arch USB_Storage]$ rm -r Test/
    [edgar@arch USB_Storage]$ ls
    BACKUPS WD
However I want to copy large files with cp -ruv from my arch machine to the NAS.
This is where the trouble lies.  Thanks for your help.

  • Can't Convert Lossless Files From USB Drive to AAC?

Hello, I have a conversion problem from some Lossless files that I have put in a USB drive (so I won't have to keep re-importing the CD's). Everytime I try to convert, I get this:
But if I import the CD's into Lossless THEN convert to AAC from the imported file, it works! I don't want to keep importing, but I want to keep the original files on my USB drives ...please help!

Hello ed and thank you for replying!
Well, I did drag the Lossless files from iTunes to the USB and I did check the properties of the file in the USB and well, I see it is an MPEG-4 audio file (like my other song files are in iTunes).
and I'm sorry if I can't exactly find out if there are CDA files or not.
I also did try ripping the CD files and placing them on the USB but I will try again!

    Hi BobRz
Thanks for you suggestion but it didn't work - are there other ways for solving this problem? Or is it because my files that I want to copy and paste onto my hard disk etc are too big? (However there is space on my hard disk and it works on a PC)

Do some testing to get your method working right with some less than important footage.
Copy/paste files where you want then.
Use the FCE Reconnect feature to tell FCE where the newly copied files reside.
Make sure the new location and files are working as expected with your Projects.
Delete the original files if no longer required.

  • I am having trouble moving files from iPhoto to a thumb drive.  Sometimes I can move 20 photos next time I can only move 2 photos or 0---this is during the same session.  I also have trouble downloading photos to the internet.  Can someone please help?

I am having trouble moving files from iphoto to a thumb drive.  During the same session sometime I can move 10 photos at a time, the next time I can only move one photo and sometime no photos will move.  I also have trouble downloading photos to the internet.  I was using a MacBook Pro and had no problems like this.  I then upgraded to the MacBook Pro with Retina Vision and this is the computer I am having problems with.  Can anyone please give me a suggestion in how to fix this problem. THANK YOU.

iPhoto problems should be posted in their forums.
I also have trouble downloading photos to the internet.
Needs clarification.  You upload from your computer to the internet & download from a website/internet to your computer.  So which are you trying to do?  Either way, sounds like a browser issue.  You need to post in the forum of whichever browser you are using.

  • Moving files from iMac to an external drive

I have a 250 gb iMac and a 1 tB external drive (Seagate). My iMac is getting quite full, so I tried moving some files to my external. It told me that I couldn't because these files needed OS X to operate. How can I move files to my external so I can clear up my iMac drive?

    Greetings,
Is the drive you are moving files to the drive you use for your Time Machine backup? If so, don't do this. Any files you put on that drive are not backed up by Time Machine (Time Machine cannot backup it's own drive. That would be like performing brain surgery on yourself.) If you are running out of space, get an additional external drive to store them on so that they can still be backed up by Time Machine.
Here are some general ideas on how to free up space: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8358.html
The most common items that people tend to have that use up all their space are iTunes (Music/Movies), iPhoto (Pictures), and iMovie (Movies).
You can move all 3 of these to an external hard drive if you like. Again, do not use your Time Machine backup drive for this purpose. That is for making a backup copy, not for holding the originals.
Once you have another drive you can move the afore mentioned large items if they are indeed taking up a large amount of space.
    iTunes: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449
    iPhoto: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1229
    iMovie: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iMovie/8.0/en/19555.html
    Hope that helps.
