Moving files in the same volume & Permissions

Is there a way to make a folder automatically inherit the permissions of the destination folder during a move operation on the same volume. If a user moves a folder from dirtree_A to dirtree_B on the same volume the permissions are retained from dirtree_A.
Is there a secret key to hold down during a move or some better way to setup the folder security to make the permission change more dynamic during a folder move?TIA Troy

Hi,
By default, an object inherits permissions from its parent object, either at the time of creation or when it is copied or moved to its parent folder. The only exception to this rule occurs when you move an object to a different folder on the same volume.
In this case, the original permissions are retained.
You can modify how Windows Explorer handles permissions when objects are moved in the same NTFS volume. As mentioned, when an object is moved within the same volume, the object preserves its permissions by default. However, if you want to modify this behavior
so that the object inherits the permissions from the parent folder, modify the registry

  • How can I make all my files the same volume???

I am a DJ and I want to make all of my files the same volume without losing too much sound quality. I dont just want them to play back the same volume on iTunes. I want them to all be the same volume when I burn them to a cd. As there a way to do this? Any help would be appreciated!

I want them to all be the same volume when I burn them to a cd.
If you mean Audio CD, check 'Use Sound Check' in Preferences>Advanced>Burning.
This will - kind of - 'normalize' the tracks and is supposed to bring them at the same volume.
I haven't tried this for a long time though (since iTunes 5, I think), because I was not satisfied with the results.
It could have improved now, so you could give it a try.
I use Jam (Roxio.com) to create my Audio CDs. It has a 'normalize' function that works well and you can also set the gain for each track manually.
You could also try the 'normalize' function of an audio editor like Audacity (freeware) or Sound Studio to alter the files permanently.
    Hope this helps.

  • When I set all the tracks in the latest Garageband to the same volume levels and save, when I open the file again they've changed back to a previous setting?

I'm trying to mix a recording in the latest 2014 version of Garageband, but when I set all the tracks in the latest Garageband to the same volume levels and save, when I open the file again they've changed back to a previous setting? Does anyone know why it changes even after saving the file?
    Below is my iMac settings.

Do you have a back up?
If not you're into using file recovery software like  File Salvage - you can download a free trial and it will scan the disk for you and tell you with might be recoverable. Actual recovery will require that you purchase the app. There may be many files with the same or similar names. Always recover the largest file size.
There are other such apps. Search on Macupdate or the App Store

So in the last few days I’ve noticed that pressing my volume change keys actually isn’t changing the volume on my macbook pro at all. When I press the volume up or down keys, it makes the recognisable pop sound but stays at the same volume while the squares go up or down. I mute it but my computer still makes sound. It’s the same with the volume control up the top of the screen, too. I slide it up and down and it doesn’t change the volume at all. The only way I can change the volume is with my speakers or the program I’m in (iTunes, VLC etc). I restarted and it seems to be okay then I go to change it a couple minutes later and it’s back to not working again.
I’ve checked my settings- the “use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard fuction keys” is not switched on, and I have tried a suggestion of moving the com.apple.systempreferences.plist file out of the library and onto the desktop and restarting and neither of those seem to make any difference whatsoever. I’ve tried to find online forums but the only suggestions I found were those two and they didn’t work.
I’m just annoyed because I usually have the worst luck with technology but my macbook had been going strong and I got it because of the apparent lack of things that could go wrong, but of course even if there is one thing that could go wrong it will happen to me.
    Please help!

  • Time Machine will not complete a system backup and terminates with "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume.  This follows a problem when Time machne terminated when the volume was almost full.

On 11/1/2011, Time Machine (TM) terminated with an error message I did not record.  I noted that the drive was full and decided to do a separate complete bootable  system backup using Carbon Copy Clone (CCC), before clearing the TM volume and trying to start it over clean.  Part way through the full system backup CCC put up a message that there was a Physical Problem  "Library/Application Support/Techtool Protection/McIntosh HD/Directory Backup 2011-11-01-16-28-16".  That was about the time that TM malfunctioned, so I assumed they were related.  After starting CCC over a couple of times, and getting the same error message, I let it go through to completion of the backup, which took three or four hours.  I then ran tests using Disk Utility and verified that there was nothing physically wrong with both the internal hard drive and the TM volume.  I also erased and reformatted the TM volume.  However, every time I started Time Machine, it would record a few GB and terminate with "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume".  I restarted the computer with no change in results.  Note that prior to starting the CCC backup, I "Repaired Permissions", "zapped the PRAM" and "re-set the SMC", hoping to have a clean bootable system on the backup.  I ran Techtool and no problems were found.
I'm running this on an Intel iMac under 10.5.8 and recording to a 500GB My Passport drive.  My hard drive is only about half full at 246 GB.  My assessment is that something happened at 16-28-16 on 11/1/2001 to screwup the Backup Directory in the file at "Library/Application Support/Techtool Protection/McIntosh HD/Directory Backup 2011-11-01-16-28-16". My question is, how do I fix it?
I had just completed writing everything above here, explaining the problems I had been encountering for the past 24 hours.  I had the Time Machine window standing open on the desktop where I could see it, having recentlycleared it after the last termination.  As I was proofing what I had written, I looked at the window and noted that the clock had started a new run for a full back up, since all prior efforts had failed and the TM volume was empty.  As I watched and waited for it to fail again, as it had been doing at about 13 GB, it kept going and going until it just finished a complete backup, about 4.5 hours later, with my having done nothing.  Now my question would have to be - what could possiibly have happened to make it perform this way?   It will be interesting to see if it continue to operate normally, or if the problem will return, in a later backup run.

You should not keep those files for long, and probably shouldn't back them up (if you need them at all -- since you do regular backups, I'm doubtful just how worthwhile that feature is).
"Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume".
One of Apple's maddeningly incomplete messages. Most likely, there's a problem with a file (quite possibly the one CCC didn't like).  See #C3 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for details and instructions on finding and fixing it.
If you continue running the Directory Protection app, be sure to exclude your Time Machine drive from it (as it will just take up lots of room, and won't help repair your backups if there's a problem);  and exclude the folders it creates from being backed-up by Time Machine (as they'll create large backups, and you probably can't use the backed-up folders anyway), per #10 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

  • Time Machine fails with "error while linking files on the backup volume"

One of my drives was nearly full. I moved some folders from that drive to one that had more space.
The next TM backup failed with "error while linking files on the backup volume". A full backup is about 620 GB, although this backup shouldn't have been a complete one. There was 570+ GB free on the drive.
A Disk Verify reported "Drive appears to be okay." Earlier TM backups appeared to be fine (at least accessible). I swapped the TM drive for another, initialized it, and TM used that drive with no complaints.
    What does the message mean?

  • How do I make all the clips on one track the same volume?

I am trying to raise the volume equally on all the clips. One would think that it would be as simple as turning up the volume knob on the audio mixer on the track with all the clips, but of course not, that would be TOO simple. When I raise the volume, it keeps jumping back and forth as if I asked it to key frame the volume knob. How can I perform the simple task of raising all the clip volumes to the same volume ?

    VideoHero
I do not recall what version of Premiere Elements that you are using nor the computer operating system on which it is running.
So, I will generalize for now, referencing version 12...
    1. Assuming you have several Timeline audio clips that you want with the same volume...select the first, go to Adjust Tab/Adjustments Palette/Volume Panel expanded and adjust the Volume.
    2. Then right click the that first file (with the adjusted Volume), select Copy.
    3. Select all the other audio clips that you want to have the same Volume level. Then right click anywhere in the selection and select Paste Effects and Adjustments.
    Does that work for you.
If you have video with its audio linked to it, depending on the specific circumstances to be discussed later, you might want to unlink the audio and video beforehand.
Please review and let us know if that works for you. Any questions or need clarification, please do not hesitate to ask.
    Thanks.

  • TM Error. An error occurred while linking files on the backup volume

I have a 1TB Time Capsule. It's been working great for over a month. I'm now receiving an error.
    Time Machine Error
Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while linking files on the backup volume.
I don't know what has happened to cause this error. Does anyone know what has happened and how to fix this? The first time I received this error was when it showed under Available it had over 500 GB and was backing up 89.1 GB. Then the error. The backup scheduled time came up and TM started to backup again. Again with the error. The next time it backed up I made a note of the figures it showed. It starts the backup process "Preparing" and shows under Available 389.1 GB of 929.5 GB. Then Preparing shows that it's backing up, 13.5 GB. Then I get the error pop up. I check Time Machine and under Available it shows 370.3 GB of 929.5 GB. The scheduled time came up again. Available shows 370.3 GB of 929.5 GB and that it's backing up 18.9 GB. I'm trying to see if there is a pattern, for instance 389.1 GB - 370.3 GB = 18.8 GB. It's not 18.9 GB, but it's close. I'm wondering if there is a point which causes the backup to fail and figure out if this can be fixed. I'm stumped. The backups keep getting an error but the Available amount keeps getting lower. Again, any help would be appreciated. Maybe you see something I don't. Thank you.

I forgot to state this in my post; what I noticed beside "Latest Backup", is that it states "Failed ! (! is in a red circle)". (So why does the "Available" amount keep going down? Where is the disk storage space going if it's not backing up?). It started the backup again, it initializes "Latest Backup" by showing a blank. I was curious what it showed when I went into Enter Time Machine. I guess the last good backup was Sunday July 27, 2008 11:21 PM. That's what it shows prior to the NOW selection on the right. The Oldest Backup is June 19, 2008. I thought this might be useful to note.
I thought it would be a good idea to see what Time Machine is doing and record the steps. I know it will involve time and patience, but hopefully I'll find out something. It might be of use to someone.
    - It's backing up again and it gets to the point showing that it backed up 18.8 GB of 18.9 GB and stays there for 20 minutes or so.
    - Then it shows 18.9 GB of 18.9 GB, and stays at that point for a while.
    - Available shows 351.5 GB of 929.5 GB.
    - The Failed ! comes up again in Latest Backup. and backup stops.
    - Again it looks like the disk storage is used up. (So the questions would be; 1. If the backup failed, where is the space going if the backup failed? 2. How can I get back what should be available and have it show the correct available amount?
It came up to the time it backs up again. It shows that the backup amount will be 18.9 GB. I turned Time Machine OFF. It looks like it will do the same thing. Does anyone know what is happening and what needs to be done to correct this and get my available space back with it recording the correct available amount (xxx.x GB of 929.5 GB)

  • When edit in photoshop, the edited image is added to the catalog in a duplicate of the same volume..

    Ok, this is realy strange...
    I edit in photoshop a cr2 file from a canon 20d
Once done with the edit, i clic save in photoshop
The file is saved as a tif but, in the folder view in the library, i now have 2 instances of the same volume...
In the first instance of that volume, the one that should be there, i do not see the new edited tif file (& the file count did not went up by 1)but in the second instance of the same volume, i now have only the new tif file under that directory...
    here is what i see...
    Local Disk (E:)
    Wedding 8718
    Peter & Josée 499
    Local Disk (E:)
Peter & Josée 1 (this one is the tif after the edit in PS)
If i detete the tif, then right-clic Remove the directory Peter & Josée under the second instance of Local Disk (E:), the second instant of the volume will be gone as well.
It does that every time i edit in photoshop.

    I noticed something...
Looking at the metadata of both files, i found a little difference in the folder field information in metadata...
My original cr2 file in the real volume has this in the folder field... E:\Wedding\Peter and Josée... notice it start with a capitale E
The file in the "ghost folder" under the duplicate of the same volume has: e:\Wedding\Peter and Josée... lowercase for the drive letter
When i reinstall the previous version of Camera Raw, i have the message in LR saying i need 4.5 for full compatibility... i clic render using LR, and it works... But this time both files start with a capitale E in the folder field in metadata...

Whenever I open a file in Lion, other files of the same sort that I opened previously automatically open up. For example, if I open a .jpg file, numerous other .jpg files that I opened previously in the day open up. How do I close these files to prevent them from showing up again, like in previous versions?

Dealing With The Resume Feature of Lion
Managing Mac OS X Lion's application resume feature.
If you shutdown your computer you should get a dialog asking if you want applications to resume on the next startup. Simply uncheck the box to prevent that from occurring. Open General preferences and uncheck the option to Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps. You can also install a third-party utility to control resume features on individual applications: RestoreMeNot or Application State Cleaner.
It is possible to completely stop the Resume feature although I'm unconvinced that it is that annoying. Nevertheless see the following:
If you have not yet done so you must first make your /Home/Library/ folder visible. Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder. At the prompt paste the following command line:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
Press RETURN. Quit the Terminal application.
In the Finder navigate to the /Home/Library/Saved Application State/ folder. Delete the contents of the folder. Back up to the /Home/Library/ folder. Select the Saved Application State folder. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the Sharing and Permissions panel at the bottom click on the lock icon and authenticate. Set each of the listed entries to Read Only. Close the Get Info window.
Quit all open programs except the Finder (this is very important.) Next, navigate to the /Home/Library/Preferences/ByHost/ folder. Look for a .plist file with "com.apple.loginwindow." in the file name followed by some numbers in hexadecimal. Select the file. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window and in the Sharing and Permissions panel click on the lock icon and authenticate. Set each of the listed entries to Read Only. Close the Get Info window. If you also find a file with the same filename but with a last extension of ".lockfile," then you should delete it.
The above should eliminate the Resume feature system-wide. Note that any future system updates or upgrades will likely undo these changes. You will then need to repeat this procedure assuming there are no major changes in OS X related to it.

CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showning, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.

  • Two users open same file at the same time... how is this possible?

I am the Creative Director for a magazine. All the people in my team are using Macs with Leopard and Indesign CS3. I didn't know this was possible, but it is happening to us. Two people can open the same Indesign file at the same time. When this happens, the file becomes corrupt and we can't work on it again. We don't use Version Cue. We probably should, as well as In Copy, but we just haven't had the time to learn to use them. This problem started about three months ago and we have not been able to determine how this is possibe or find any information why it is happening, or how to stop it from happening. Help! If anyone out there has any idea... we are desperate.

My hunch would be to suspect the server - it's probably not handling file locking correctly.
Here's what I'd image I'd try - but be aware, I am writing down stuff from memory, and I cannot guarantee the info is completely accurate - but I hope it might give you some pointers.
    - If the server is currently providing the AppleShare Filing Protocol (or whatever it is called - acronym is AFP), you could try to connect using that.
Go to the Finder, and use the Go - Connect to Server... menu item and enter the server's IP address, prefixed with afp:// - e.g. if the server is on IP address, say '192.168.1.120'
In that case, I'd try connecting to
    afp://192.168.1.120
(I am inventing this IP address for the sake of argument - don't simply copy this number. Ask the IT guy what the server's IP actual address is. There are other ways to connect, and using the IP address is very crude and 'primitive' but it also cuts a few complexities out of the picture).
If this does not work, it might mean that the server is not providing the AFP protocol - in that case, ask the IT guy if he can turn it on for you.
I don't know much about what Microsoft's various product names mean (e.g. what exactly is included in a 'Microsoft small business server' - no idea), but there's a good chance there is a module available that is probably called 'Services for Macintosh' which can be installed.
I've worked around Microsoft servers before, and if I remember correctly, 'Services for Macintosh' is not typically installed by default - it's part of the product, but it is not installed unless explicitly requested during install.
The IT guy will need to get out the Microsoft server's install disks and install the optional Services for Macintosh, then turn it on. Once that is done, the above 'magical incantation' afp://yadiyadi... should work.
If it does, make sure _everyone_ in the team uses the same method to connect to the server, and then try again - there's a good chance the server will now honor the file locking and warn the second user who attempts to open the document.
    - If the server is already using the AppleShare Filing Protocol, and you're already doing some variation of the above, and the whole point I made above is moot, try connecting using the SMB protocol instead. So, in the finder use 'Go - Connect to Server...' then use
    smb://192.168.1.120
(replacing 192.168.1.120 by your server's real IP address).
Again - make sure _everyone_ is using the same method to connect before trying whether the files are now locked properly.
The AFP and SMB protocols are the two most common protocols that Macs can use to connect to a Microsoft file server.
Now, the third possible cause: often people don't realize there are possibly multiple ways to connect to an MS server, and so people go browsing the network from their Macs and 'grab' whatever entry they see first.
So what often happens is that user 'A' is actually connecting using SMB, and user 'B' is connecting using 'AFP' and in theory that should all work, but in practice sometimes things go wrong.
My recommendation is to make sure that all users in the Mac workgroup connect in the exact same way - so there's no mix of SMB and AFP protocols being used.
To verify which protocol is used, right-click or control-click on the volume name after it has been mounted on the Mac, and use the Get Info... menu item - the info dialog should tell you which protocol is being used. The easiest to see the mounted volumes is to go into the Finder Preferences, and under 'General' make sure it shows mounted volumes on your desktop. Then you can simply right-click the volume on the desktop to do Get Info...
    Hope that helps!
    Cheers,
    Kris

  • How can multiple files for the same genre be consolidated

I organize my iTunes files in genre folders for easy access. ITunes creates multiple folders for some genres and allows a single (preferred) genre file for other much larger files. How can I consolidate multiple files with the same genre?

Thanks. I've done what you selected. The problem is that despite all files being identified with the same genre, iTunes groups some genres in two separate folders. Thus, I have two "Country" folders, for example. More perplexing is that iTunes groups my largest genre folder, "Jazz", in a single folder.

Please, can some one help me?

    HI Martin,
i am not realy sure what you want!?!?
i think you want to display only a part of the values you read from XYZ
    so what you can do:
write all the values in an array.
the size of the array is the max. value of the slide bar
now you can select a part of the array (e.g. values from 100 to 200) and display this with a graph
the other option is to use the history function of the graphes
    regards
