Moving files manually in itunes?

Hi,
I have the latest itunes.. when I import music I do so with a folder for each artist or album.
Most of the time itunes creates a complete folder for my import.
There are a few tracks that did not go into their folders and were left outside as "unknown artist".
Now I use the "artists" tab to navigate and I don't like the sparse tracks lying around next to complete folders (albums).
Is there is anyway to move these files manually into their rightful folders?
Seems like there should be an easy option to do so.
Thanks

Select one in iTunes right click - get info and update the Album and Artist info.
Are these MP3 files?

i am trying to use my old iphone (3G now as an ipod) with my wife's itunes eacct.  i would like to sync it, but i don't want to lose all of th music that i put on it from my personal library.  can i have two itunes on one computer so that i can back-up my ipone on this computer so that i dont have to worry about losing all of my stuff.  is there a way to join two accts? i thought about home sharing, but i dont think that will work.  any ideas?

But didn't he say migration assistant didn't move them over in the first place?
Is migration assistant supposed to move everything so one doesn't have to do anything manually?

  • Moving files from one itunes account to another

    Hey there,
I was wondering if anyone can help me out. My mom got an ipad a couple of months ago and I just let her use my itunes account and she bought songs well now she got an iphone and I made her an account and I was wondering if there was a way to get the purchased content from my account to her account so everything will just be on hers and be done with it. Thanks so much!!!

No, store purchases are permananetly associated with the account they were purchased with (or gifted to). However the devices can hold "protected" content from up to five different accounts. Songs purchased within the last few years are unlikly to be protected so there should be no problem adding both the content bought with your account and the newer purchases she makes on her own.

  • A solution to having media files in your iTunes library on multiple drives

After searching on the web for threads of people with this issue, I found this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1483694
I wanted to reply, but the thread has been archived and locked, so I figured I could make a new post offering my new solution.
The application I have written to allow users to easily move the media files in their iTunes library to multiple drives is called TuneSpan (http://www.tunespan.com).
TuneSpan is user friendly, freeware, native OS X app. It does the whole process of moving files and having iTunes know the new location for you, just as you would expect from a full featured app for OS X. Symbolic links are used to point iTunes to the new file locations, but in some cases, TuneSpan can actually get iTunes to learn a new location for the file, without the need of a symbolic link. Also, TuneSpan never removes any tracks from iTunes (preserving playlists, play counts, etc.) and there is no need to adjust any settings in iTunes such as the "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" setting.
Lots of important information about TuneSpan and how it works can be found on http://www.tunespan.com/help.html
I do not mean to completely self-promote by posting this, but I realize that I am doing so. I am hoping to reach out to users who have had the desire to do this task but have been overwhelmed or hindered by past solutions technicality, inflexibility, etc. I am hoping that making this posting in the location that some may look for a solution will give TuneSpan more exposure, and help more people have their iTunes library the way they want it to be. TuneSpan is freeware, but donation are accepted though not forced nor nagged for. If you choose to donate through my site, I will, of course, be receiving compensation which I would be grateful for, but that is not the intention of this post. If this posting does not meet the guidelines of this forum, I apologize.

Very useful app, thanks! But i've noticed it is still a O.xx beta. Do you intend to go on with it?

  • ITunes moving files

For the last few months I've been having issues with iTunes moving my music files. This is a problem because I have a large music collection and each time the files move I must go back and place them into the iTunes music folder. My settings are so:
Keep iTunes Media Folder Organized is on
Make copies to iTunes Media folder is on
I am running Vista with the newest update of iTunes
It seems that every month or so iTunes decides to select random folders and move them out of the iTunes Music directory. From here they are placed into my default music folder given to me by Windows. My iTunes music folder is located inside of the Windows music folder. So currently this is my situation.
Username/Music/iTunes/iTunesMusic is where most of my music is (and where it should be)
Username/music is where some of my artist files and folders are being moved to
My issue: iTunes cannot find the files thus giving me that wonderful exclamation point
This usually leads to me putting everything back in place and manually finding all of the songs through iTunes
Please help, I've wasted quite a deal of time on moving files and folders

I don't use WMP either but a few summers back after an update, I noticed a lot of random changes in itunes...and I knew I hadn't changed 500 tracks worth of tags on things I hadn't played for over a year. It took me hours to fix the mess WMP had made of my tags.
itunes is, frankly, too stupid to do this - it only gets info from the internet when you rip a new CD.
A lot of folks don't believe WMP is doing this, since they never open WMP. But WMp can run in the background and change things. Then the next time they look in itunes, itunes has read the changes made by WMP.
Long story short, after I fixed my tags and made sure EVERYTHING was turned off in WMP, it didn't happen again. Until a few months ago, for some reason I opened WMP and saw a bunch of my itunes files in the WMP library. I looked back and they were added right after a windows update that included a WMP update. The option on the WMP security tab was allowing web pages to open WMP in the background.
You'll have to wait and see if this happens again. I realize it's not something you can say right now has been fixed. Let us know in a month or two if it has stopped or continues.

  • Moving files in Itunes

how do I move a file from one folder to another in iTunes. moving it manually in the hard drive doesn't do it.

Don't.  Once the song is in iTunes, leave it alone.  If you move the file manually, iTunes will lose track of where it is.

  • ITunes keeps moving files to wrong directory

This has happened twice now. I go to play an album and get the ! and that iTunes cannot find the files. I dig around in my MAcBook's hard drive and find a folder labeled Music Drive with about 200 randomly selected albums. I move them back to my external drive and erase the folder on my MacBook hard drive and the next day they are back again. Anybody run into this one?

I figured this out. Not sure if it's the same problem or solution for others, but definitely wanted to share what I found.
Initially I had moved the songs from my hard drive back to my computer. I have 30 Gig, so that was a pain. The problem still occurred. Then I figured it out.
I had a niece that had plugged her iPod into my computer. As a result, she had saved music onto my computer. I later found out that it was music that her friends had downloaded from the internet, etc. (Justin Bieber, etc.). Anyway, I started watched the Hard Drive where iTunes was moving files and started to watch exactly what tracks it was moving. I started to remove those from iTunes. After I felt assured I had moved those files which were being moved, I then reimported the remainder into iTunes fresh. There was something about those files that was causing problems. After I removed those offending songs, it worked just fine. I can move it back to the hard drive, etc. and it all works just fine with those songs deleted. I was able to figure it out by 1) figuring out that my niece had done this back about the time that the problem occurred 2)watching which songs were getting moved initially and starting the problem.
I hope this helps. It seems pretty isolated and may be specific to me.

  • After moving files out of the iTunes library they still show in the iTunes list

I am archiving movies out of my iTunes library.  I have moved the files from the iTunes media folder and into another folder but the movies still show up in the iTunes movie list in the main iTunes window.  I am sure there is some kind of link to the file but do I need to break that somehow or can I refresh the iTunes list so it will see that the files are no longer in the media folder?

An easier way is to simply drag movies/songs from the iTunes window to where you want.
    Then delete it in iTunes.
I am sure there is some kind of link to the file but do I need to break that somehow or can I refresh the iTunes list so it will see that the files are no longer in the media folder?
When you add files to iTunes, it adds them to the iTunes library database file and this is what is displayed in iTunes.
I f you remove the file from its location, iTunes will not know until you try to access it in iTunes. It will then show an exclamation mark if it cannot find that file.

  • Crash iTunes when moving files in downloads list?

Twice in a row now I've been able to crash iTunes when moving files in the Downloads list (trying to change the priority).
This happened twice when I tried to drag a file up above the list to get the list to scroll. iTunes would thrash the disk for about ten seconds, and then crash with no error.
    Is this a known issue?

Just to clarify, this only happened when the view was down near the bottom of the list, and I wanted to move a file up to the top. Moving files around in the list worked fine if I moved the file within the viewable area of the screen.

  • ITunes moving files outside of the "music" directory.

I can't understand why, but whenever I open up iTunes it moves files outside of the "music" directory and into the "iTunes Media" directory.
The files it decides to move are random and it does not matter if I try to play or edit any of them, it happens as soon as iTunes is opened.
Any idea why this occurs and how I can prevent it?

I don't think you guys are understanding what I am asking.
Since iTunes 9 was released I have had my media "reorganized" and consolidated according to the "organize library" option in iTunes. My music library looked like this:
    ../iTunes/iTunes Media/Music/<artist name>/<album name>/<track>
What has been happening recently when I launch iTunes is that it starts moving my music to this structure:
    ../iTunes/iTunes Media/<artist name>/<album name>/<track>
iTunes is moving files automatically outside of my "music" folder into the root "iTunes Media" folder even though I have asked it to keep my folder organized / consolidated and have run "organize library" several times.

  • Moving a file in to itunes (M3U Audio Playlist (.m3u))

I am quite new to this. I have 2 files (songs) which play in media player but I want to put them onto my ipod. When I try to drag the file into my itunes library it doesn't copy. Is there a way around this? Thank you in advance! Sorry probably something really easy but I cant work it out!

    That's fine, thank you.
    I can't imagine why I didn't discover that.
Perfect! Does all i want now.

  • All my mp3s were moved to trash and iTunes still sees them!

I have a rather odd situation regarding the most current version of iTunes and my mp3s. Recently, I was having trouble getting my ipod nano to be recognized by iTunes. After doing much reading on this site, I found that one of the problems had to do with some of my mp3 files being locked. (How? I have no idea). So I followed the steps recommended by others: removing the itunes.xml file and deleting the library file so iTunes would rebuild itself, and unlocking the files via work in the terminal window. It worked and I was able to resync by nano.
A few days later, I was playing some music in iTunes and I happened to notice that there a few songs missing from an album (I keep my song list in album view). I navigated to the mp3 directory (I have my mp3s on an external drive under my own file structure) went into the album folder and there were no mp3s. I looked in another folder and another and still nothing. I could see my file structure but all the songs were gone. And yet they were playing in iTunes. I did a quick search and I found that all 5650 mp3s were in the .trashes folder of the external hd. And not grouped together by artist or album. But 5650 individual mp3 files.
Later on I remembered that a few days earlier, prior to nuking the iTunes library file and having iTunes rebuild itself, I had a power outage that brought down my drive. I guess the sudden loss of power and the quick shut down scrambled things.
Is there a way, a script, or application that I can use to move each mp3 file back to its original location without my having to manually move each one by hand? I can’t just drag and drop the files into the default iTunes directory since I had them all on an external drive. (Could I drop each song into the default drive and somehow iTunes would read the mp3 tag and “magically”” create a folder for the artist and album of each file? No? I didn’t think so).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I realize that doesn't have anything to do with your initial problem. I was referring to the points you were making saying itunes wouldn't allow you to drag and drop the files and recreate the file structure which it would. Anyway, I've found the easiest way to manage my itunes library is to let itunes create the initial itunes folder containing the library.xml files, as well as the actual itunes music folder. After that that entire folder can be easily moved to where ever you want still keeping your library intact. So keeping that entire folder on the external drive makes thins easier for me. The exact same library can be used from different computers as well. Once you move the folder just hold down the option key while starting itunes, and select the itunes folder where ever you moved it to.

  • ITunes 9.2 does not show iTunesU files at all (iTunes 9.1 did)

    Hi everybody,
After upgrading to iTunes 9.2, iTunes stopped showing iTunes U files I had moved to my 30GB 5th gen iPod (Windows formatted).
When I first move iTunes U files to my iPod, they show up in iTunes under Music, with iTunesU as the genre. This is fine, I know the firmware does not allow an iTunesU category for this iPod, and it is OK. But after using my iPod for a while, iTunes will no longer show these files. They are gone in iTunes 9.2 (this was not the case in previous versions). My iPod still shows these files, and I can play them just fine. But I cannot see them in iTunes, and I cannot delete them. (Can I delete files in my iPod without using a computer?) These files stay as Other under iTunes, and take up space, but they are invisible to iTunes (on Mac or Win).
I have already gone through one cycle of reformatting my iPod using iTunes, I don't want to do it again.
Is anybody else seeing this? Any workarounds, or is this a bug with new iTunes 9.2?

I am experiencing a similar problem, as well. I have downloaded some Apple Developer videos that I wanted (available on iTunes U) and converted them (within iTunes) to the standard def iPhone/iPod video format. I would check to make sure that you've
The weird thing is that the files sync'ed over into my library - and I am able to watch the videos just fine on my iPhone 3GS (running iOS 4 with iTunes 9.2 (61)). However, for the life of me I cannot get the iTunes U playlist that I created to sync properly with my iPhone. It copies the playlist name - which is a good sign - but if I go to it on my iPhone it's completely empty.
Here is what I have tried so far:
    1) Verified that the iTunes U videos have been converted properly and can play on my iPhone
    2) Verified that there are iTunes U videos in my playlist (which I have named "Apple Development Videos"
    3) Verified that "Sync iTunes U" has been checked within iTunes - with the option selected to automatically include all items of all collections (although I have tried it by explicitly including individual iTunes U content and explicitly selecting the "Apple Development Videos" playlist as well)
    4) Manually syncing iTunes with my iPhone - the "Apple Development Videos" list comes over, the videos in iTunes U are playable on the iPhone, but the playlist is still empty
To make things worse, I figured I would try manually adding the iTunes U videos to the playlist on the iPhone. When I do that, the videos STILL do not appear in the playlist - and when it syncs with iTunes I have a playlist that has duplicate entries.
Sounds like a bug to me; hopefully this will be resolved in the near future

Unless you are an Apple developer, the only way I know is to submit feedback via https://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html
Here's the feedback I just submitted:
Subject: Library organization bug in iTunes 12.0.1.26 for Windows x64
I Have Feedback About: Software or Hardware Compatibility
    Comments:
    Hi,
I have my iTunes library organized into subfolders (Music, Movies, TV Shows, and so on). When I add new video media to iTunes, either by "drag and drop," or placing a file into the "Automatically Add to iTunes" folder, the new media file is placed in the "Home Videos" folder. Then, after changing the metadata using the "Get Info" mechanism, the metadata is updated; however, the file is not moved out of the "Home Videos" folder. A new folder is created properly under "Movies" or "TV Shows" (depending on the type), yet iTunes isn't taking the final step of moving the file into that folder.
I've validated this behavior on two different Windows systems.
iTunes 12.0.1.26 running on OS X 10.10 (Yosemite) moves the files properly, so this issue looks to be specific to the Windows version.

  • I have multiple libraries on an external drive. Somehow all the iTunes library files i.e. iTunes Library.itl, xml, itdb, Media folder, etc disappeared! Only the music files remain. Now when I start iTunes w/option it can't find any of the old libraries!

Help! I 'm using an old G4 powerbook, Mac OSX 10.5.8, iTunes ver 10. I have multiple iTunes libraries on an external drive. Everything was fine for a while, then all of the iTunes library files, i.e. iTunes Library.itl, xml, itdb, artwork folder, Media folder, etc mysteriously disappeared! Only the music files remain (thank god) So now when I start iTunes w/option key to choose a library, I can't choose any of them because iTunes won't recognize them. Because all the library stuff is missing. So can I re-create the library files? (I don't care if I lose my ratings)
Or should I create a new empty library on the external drive, then manually move all the music files to the Media folder in the new library?
I tried some stupid ideas like creating a new library just to start iTunes, then going into prefs and advanced, then under iTunes Media folder location, selecting the location of the old library on the external, to see if iTunes would then find all the music which is still there, but no workee.
I'm out of ideas, and I searched the archives.
    Help! anyone?
    Scott

I don't know if this is me adding files to iTunes when the external wasn't connected
    it is.
is it OK to just keep deleting that library on the Air?
    i wouldn't - at least not until i
    mount the external
point iTunes media folder location back to the external via preferences > advanced
consolidate my library via file > library > organize library
The ntfs hasn't seem to be causing any problems, but I've always wanted to know.
in order for your Mac to write to NTFS drives, it needs some help by installing e.g. the NTFS 3G driver. apparently that or something similar is installed on your Mac already. preferably, it would be formatted for Mac but then windows machines would need to have e.g. MacDrive installed to recognize the drive.
