Moving files on Lion 10.7.2
Hi all,
yesterday night I decided to moving (not coping) about 100 Gb of data (two WMWare virtual images of Windows XP)
from an external USB disk to my internal hard disk.
The process starts and I see it will takes about 3 hours.
I decide to stop the process to start it again just before going to sleep.
So I click on x button of the moving window.
After few seconds the moving process stops.
But opening the source folder I had a very unpleasant surprise: no files at all.
I check the destination folder: just few files of about 50 MB (obviously).
I immediately removes the external USB disk to avoid other damages.
My questions are easy (the answers I think not):
1. where are my data?
2. is there a easy way to recover them?
Thanks in advance for the help and best regards
-- Stefano
We have no way of knowing what happened there. Obviously, something went wrong... one reason I always tell people to NEVER do what you did! You should copy, verify that the copy appears to have worked correctly, then delete. And you should have a minimum of two backups of that data somewhere.
Try connecting the drive again and see if the files are there when you look this time. It could have simply been a problem with updating the display. If they aren't there, see Recovering deleted files. (Since this drive is not the boot drive, you don't need to worry about finding a different computer to use as mentioned in those directions, just unmount and disconnect the drive until you're ready to try recovery.)
(Note that my pages contain links to other pages that promote my services, and this should not be taken as an endorsement of my services by Apple.)

Beware Moving Files in OSX Lion
Anybody having problems moving files in OSX Lion? I tried to move some files from my Downloads folder to a USB Flash Drive and it looked like the file moved successfully but the file doesn't exist in either my USB Flash Drive nor my Downloads folder. The files just disappeared.
The only way to fix this problem is to reboot the machine. Eventually, the OS will get back into this state and you won't know it until you try to move some files and end up losing them instead. This is the third time this has happened to me since upgrading to OSX Lion.Repairing the permissions of a home folder in Lion is a complicated procedure. I don’t know of a simpler one that always works.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy – do not type – the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
chmod -R -N ~
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. When a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) appears below what you entered, it’s done. You may see a few error messages about an “invalid argument” while the command is running. You can ignore those. If you get an error message with the words “Permission denied,” enter this:
sudo !!
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
Next, boot from your recovery partition by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the recovery desktop appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, enter “resetpassword” (without the quotes) and press return. A Reset Password window opens.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select ▹ Restart from the menu bar. -
Finder crashes when moving files
Finder crashes intermittently when moving files, and has done so for probably a year now. It happens pretty much daily. I was hoping the problem would go away when upgrading from Mountain Lion to Mavericks, but it didn't. Is anyone able to tell from this error log what might be causing the problem? Any suggestions would be very much appreciated!

Before our files were at Library/application support/iWeb/Domain... but it is not there anymore. Lion moved it. I would like where he put them? Thank you
OdetteIn Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
For opening your domain file in Lion for or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
Just launch the applicaiton, find and select the domain file you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
tell application "iWeb" to activate
You can download an already compiiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.
WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder. So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.

Problem: Programs (such as TextEdit) focus to a moved file
I've found serious problems with a new "feature" of Lion (or at least of TextEdit, I haven't tried to replicate the problem with other programs).
The feature is that if you have a file open in TextEdit, then rename the file in Terminal, Finder, or other program, then TextEdit will switch to the moved file. That is, if you have a file called "hello.txt" open in TextEdit, and move the file to "hello2.txt", the TextEdit will switch to "hello2.txt".
Now, this creates plenty of problems when using other programs.
For instance, if I modify the file with another text editor called Emacs, Emacs will create a backup file. Guess what TextEdit will do? It will switch to the backup file.
If there's a conflict in Dropbox, Dropbox will create a "deleted"-file of the conflict. TextEdit will switch to the "deleted"-file.
I'm sure many other programs create similar issues, as I found these problems within a day of using Lion's TextEdit.Humm well you probably don't want to disconnect your WiFi every time you run this application but i was going to say try putting it in airplane mode

Software Update stuck: "Moving files into place"
Software Update stuck. In OS C Lion (10.7.4) I ran Software Update on 25-Jul-2012 (The day when OS X Mountain Lion was released). Software Update had 5 updates, such as Safari 6.0, Remote Desktop, iPhoto (?). Software update gets about 95% done, based on the progress bar. Then it hangs... for hours. I finally had to force-Quit Software Update. Rebooted. Tried again. Same problem. Rebooted and rest the PRAM (command-option-P-R) at start-up. Ran Software Update and had the same problem. Software Update hangs while "Moving files into place." Has anyone else seen this problem and know how to get it to work?
I discovered that if I selected only one update at a time to install, all but one installed (i.e., Remote Desktop, Safari 6, and iWork update). The one update that did not install was the iPhoto update. I had left the install to run overnight (about 7 hours). Console log for /var/log/install.log when installing iPhoto update follows:

ITunes keeps moving files to wrong directory
This has happened twice now. I go to play an album and get the ! and that iTunes cannot find the files. I dig around in my MAcBook's hard drive and find a folder labeled Music Drive with about 200 randomly selected albums. I move them back to my external drive and erase the folder on my MacBook hard drive and the next day they are back again. Anybody run into this one?
I figured this out. Not sure if it's the same problem or solution for others, but definitely wanted to share what I found.
Initially I had moved the songs from my hard drive back to my computer. I have 30 Gig, so that was a pain. The problem still occurred. Then I figured it out.
I had a niece that had plugged her iPod into my computer. As a result, she had saved music onto my computer. I later found out that it was music that her friends had downloaded from the internet, etc. (Justin Bieber, etc.). Anyway, I started watched the Hard Drive where iTunes was moving files and started to watch exactly what tracks it was moving. I started to remove those from iTunes. After I felt assured I had moved those files which were being moved, I then reimported the remainder into iTunes fresh. There was something about those files that was causing problems. After I removed those offending songs, it worked just fine. I can move it back to the hard drive, etc. and it all works just fine with those songs deleted. I was able to figure it out by 1) figuring out that my niece had done this back about the time that the problem occurred 2)watching which songs were getting moved initially and starting the problem.
I hope this helps. It seems pretty isolated and may be specific to me. -
Why does the new operating system not delete the moved files from their original locations - it seems like an enormous waste of space, time and effort to clean up every file once you've moved it - also, when transferring large amounts of files it becomes a very large problem remembering which files were transferred and which not.
You're going to need to be more specific, as I'm not quite sure I understand what you're talking about.
If you're referring to copying from an external hard drive or flash drive, and you want to actually move files rather than copy them, you can hold down the option key to force it to do a "move" rather than a "copy." This is not new behavior, though... the Mac OS has worked this way as long as I can recall (and I've been using it since 1984).
If you're having a problem with trying to move files from one place to another on a single drive causing them to be copied instead, that is likely because of some permissions issue preventing you from actually being able to move them. -
My hard drive was completely full (mostly with pictures) so I moved several years worth of photos from the hard drive to an external hard drive I regularly use with the laptop. (Basically my master copies of all my photos back to 1997) I have always had Time Machine set up to back up both the laptop AND that external drive. It's always worked seamlessly until I moved those files. Time Machine has been full for a while now and regularly gives me a message that the oldest files will be deleted. That's fine.
I don't understand why moving files from the laptop to the external hd would now cause the following message (not an exact quote): Time Capsule cannot complete backup. You need 233 gb to backup and time capsule only has 107 gb available. If time capsule was already set to backup up both the laptop and the external hd, why would moving those photos from one hd to the other cause a space issue? It should equal out. And now when I look at the files on the time capsule, it only shows me a recent backup and a partial incomplete backup. None of the older backups are visible anymore. I have not deleted anything directly from the time capsule so I'm thinking somehow the index got damaged. How can I fix this? The error message says to change the settings but I really don't know what settings to change. Help!!It does not immediately delete the files that are missing.. it merely tries to backup the new files it has discovered on the external drive. Since you moved the files there, the backup at least for a while will contain both copies.. and that is why it doesn't have enough space to backup.
Fixing the problem.. hmm pondini is the expert.. you should be able to delete the backup of the photos in existing backup.. there are instructions to do it.. but it is a very poor way to do things.
Much better. .archive off the existing backup.. this is long and slow but worth it. you need a usb drive of the same size as the TC drive. Then erase the TC and start a fresh set of backups.
The alternative is to use the USB drive as a new target.. but it is much slower than the TC internal drive.

Issue in moving files from data fodler to processed folder in background
Hi All,
I am facing one issue in moving files from data fodler to processed folder in case of background execution.
When i am executing the file in the foreground, i can move the file from Data folder to processed folder. I am using SXPG_COMMAND_EXECUTE FM to move the file from data folder to processed folder. I can see the file in processed folder once the program is executed.
But in case of executing the same program in background, it is giving me the error "Failed to move the file to processed folder" in the spool of SM37 and i can see the file still laying in data folder.
I tried to check other programs which acesses the same folder as the above program, whether they are able to move. They are able to move the file to processed fodler successfully both in foreground and background mode.
Please help me in resolving this issue.
Thanks,

I recently had a kernel panic in which I think my hard drive only had so much space left after I ran a bunch of drivers I thought I needed. I uninstalled all and moved files. For some odd reason I'm not getting sound of of my hdtv/monitor.HELP? I uninstalled all the drives and apps I download. I moived files either to trash if not needed, and others to other external drives. I went into disk utility and did a repair disk permission and verify disk. Clean out junk files. Now my hdtv/monitor does not give me any sound, nor does my mac mini. Can someone please tell me what to do?

Moving Files to an External Drive
I need some help.... I just bought a new external USB drive. (1 TB) and I am now wanting to move some of the bigger files (all my iTunes library, iPhoto library, and iMovie library) to the external drive. I want to do it with the littlest amount of disconnivence possible. In other words, I don't want any messages showing up telling me that it can't find the files. So I suppose what I am asking is what is the best, and easiest way to go about moving files to the drive. Thanks
if you don't want to move your entire home folder, then the easiest way to do this is by using symbolic links.
Use my [post|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7044223] for instructions. It explains how to do it for the Documents folder but you can do the same with your Music or Movies folders. -
Moving files from iMac to an external drive
I have a 250 gb iMac and a 1 tB external drive (Seagate). My iMac is getting quite full, so I tried moving some files to my external. It told me that I couldn't because these files needed OS X to operate. How can I move files to my external so I can clear up my iMac drive?
Greetings,
Is the drive you are moving files to the drive you use for your Time Machine backup? If so, don't do this. Any files you put on that drive are not backed up by Time Machine (Time Machine cannot backup it's own drive. That would be like performing brain surgery on yourself.) If you are running out of space, get an additional external drive to store them on so that they can still be backed up by Time Machine.
Here are some general ideas on how to free up space: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8358.html
The most common items that people tend to have that use up all their space are iTunes (Music/Movies), iPhoto (Pictures), and iMovie (Movies).
You can move all 3 of these to an external hard drive if you like. Again, do not use your Time Machine backup drive for this purpose. That is for making a backup copy, not for holding the originals.
Once you have another drive you can move the afore mentioned large items if they are indeed taking up a large amount of space.
iTunes: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449
iPhoto: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1229
iMovie: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iMovie/8.0/en/19555.html
Hope that helps. -
New External Drive connected to Time Capsule moving files problem
I have a late 2009 13" unibody MacBook Pro, that I primarily use for video editing/converting. I use my Time Capsule as a network through which I can connect to my external hard drives via USB for videos and such. I've used at least two other external hard drives along with my Time Capsule for a year and a half with very few problems, aside from the inevitable crash of one. Before yesterday, I had a 1TB Western Digital MyBook (http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=210) and a 2TB Verbatim Desktop HD (http://www.verbatim.com/prod/hard-drives/desktop/usb-2.0/) connected through my 1TB Time Capsule and aside from the Verbatim drive being rather sluggish most of the time, everything was working fine.
Yesterday, I got a new external drive, an iOmega MiniMax 2TB (http://go.iomega.com/en-us/products/external-hard-drive-desktop/ultramax-minimax /minimax800/?partner=4760). I spent yesterday and most of today moving files around and whatnot through a wired connection (iOmega via firewire 800, Verbatim via USB, MyBook via USB, and Time Capsule via Ethernet), and everything moved quickly and without any problems.
I hooked my Time Capsule up to my modem, plugged in the iOmega and Verbatim drives via USB to the TC, and started my laptop. When I opened the drives, everything was working fine... And then I tried to move a file to the iOmega drive... I was moving an episode of The Killing. I dragged it into the folder and went to Safari to look something up and suddenly realized ten minutes later that I still hadn't heard the noise telling me that the file had finished. I looked at the move dialogue box and it said "156.8 MB of 323.8 MB - About 10 Seconds". I watched it for another ten minutes and it didn't move. So I clicked cancel move and the rainbow wheel of death came up and I had to force reboot my computer.
When I restarted, I opened up finder to access the drives through my Time Capsule, and it "failed to connect" to my Time Capsule. So I went back into my office to flip the switch on the surge protector in order to restart the process. I turned on my computer and I had no problem accessing my hard drives... Until I tried to move an episode of United States of Tara into the iOmega hard drive. This time, it said, "192.5 MB of 202.6 MB - About 5 Seconds" and completely stopped moving again. And the same thing happened when I clicked the little grey "x" to cancel the move.
I repeated the process several more times with no luck. Then I thought it might help to see if it does the same thing with documents. So I dragged just a random document to the iOmega and it took about 30 seconds, but it did it successfully. So I tried to move the episode of The Killing again and I let it go for, like, 25-30 minutes. After this time, I got a notification from finder saying, "Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "[the file]" can't be read or written. (Error Code -36)". Then when I went back into the "Shared" part of the sidebar to go back into my Time Capsule folder, it said "Connection Failed"
So what exactly does this mean? Are the Time Capsule and iOmega not compatible? Can I only move the files through a wired connection [which would be unfortunate]? Do I need to rejigger the USB configuration? Is the error code just for these two episodes and it's just a random coincidence that it happened the day after I got a new drive?
Thanks for any help anyone can give me!
- AlexI have attached the macbook to the tc via ethernet cable. Should I turn off my wireless connection or will itunes recognize to go with the faster connection on it's own?
You MBP will try to connect based on the order of the list of network devices on the System Preferences > Network window. If Ethernet is not at the top of the list, then go ahead and temporarily disable AirPort.
After all this is done will the wireless connection be fast enough for normal itunes operation?
For audio streaming it should be, but just be aware that your iTunes host will have to get the audio source wirelessly from the TC, which in turn will have to get the data from the USB hard drive. Finally, the iTunes host will have to wirelessly stream the iTunes audio via AirTunes to the AirPort Express.
