Moving folder from a PC to an iMac in Lightroom 5

I'm in the process of migrating from Windows to an iMac, but I'm having problems with moving folders / files within LR 5 and could do with some clear step-by-step advice please.
On the Windows PC I had all of my photos on an external hard-drive and my intention was to move all of these (about 40 000 photos) onto a WD external 4tb drive connected to my iMac. To migrate to the iMac I had initial success as follows:
1. Installed LR 5 on the iMac.
2. Copied across the lrcat and lrdta files and the presets to the iMac
3. Started LR and loaded the copied catalogue - worked fine - i can see all my folders plus their question marks as expected.
4. I re-linked the folders (still on the old external drive) within LR - question marks disappeared, able to access & develop folders/files on the ext drive within LR.
Then the problems occurred when within LR I tried to move folders from the old external drive to the new external connected to the iMac. The following then happens:
When I drag a folder up from the old external to the new external drive I get the usual 'moving files on disk warning' box, click 'Move' to confirm but then I get an error message 'Could not complete the folder move. An unknown error occurred'. I click OK and the folder has remained on the old external drive. Oddly, when I check via Finder the folder has been created within my 'Lightroom Photos' folder although it doesn't show there in LR and no photos are included in it - they're still on the old hard-drive.
I did think this might be something to do with the format of the old external drive.
step by step help would be greatly appreciated. I am not an expert on these matters.
Rob

Create a new catalog on your mac and import the orginal catalog (on mac) into the new catalog (File -> import from another catalog).
The Import from Catalog dialog will ask what to do with the photos on the old external drive (copy new photos to new location and import).

  • How do I remove my AddressBook folder from dropbox on my old imac and transfer it to my new imac with lion so I can use iCloud?

How do I remove my Address Book folder from dropbox on my old Imac and move it to my new mac so I can use icloud

Is there a reason that you don't want to use Migration Assistant to automatically transfer all your user files from one Mac to the other?
If you absolutely want to do it manually, copy the contents of the user/Library/Application Support/AddressBook folder from the old Mac to the new. Use Dropbox or a flash drive or whatever you prefer, but it must end up in the same location you copied it from. You must hold down the Option key and click the Go menu in Finder to see the Library folder, or use Go - Go to Folder and type in "~/Library".

  • How do you move one (1) Photo Folder from one Catalog to another Catalog in Lightroom 5?

I want to move one (1) Photo Folder from one Catalog to another Catalog in Lightroom 5 and my laptop (no external hard drive involved).  I have already started the editing process in Catalog #1, but due to the size of the Catalog #1, I want to move the current job and future work to a new Catalog.
Currently the backup feature takes an hour to complete. There are also significant delays during large image edits.    So I am thinking, that by moving over to a smaller Catalog, Lightroom will work faster.

Hello ... and thanks for  your response.   But I have discovered a couple problems.  And I am sure it is "operator error"
I used your method #1.  The first window that popped up stated that it was making a temporary copy of the catalog.  This took about 20 minutes.
Next, the window showed thumbnail photos on the right and a list of folders in my catalog on the left. The catalog contains folders stored on my LapTop, as well as my external hard drive.
There appeared to be a distinctive difference between those photo folders stored on the external hard drive and those on my LapTop.   The folders on the external drive were named as I have all my folders named: Date_CustomName.  The folders stored on my LapTop were named as: Lightroom_5 Backup_Date_CustomName or some such combination and my memory is foggy on the actual use of underscore, slash marks, dashes, etc.
I searched the list closely, and the Folders without a reference to "Lightroom Backup" were not showing.
So as a test, I "added" to the new Catalog one folder from the external hard drive and two from the LapTop.   After the transfer, the new Catalog had accurately named my external hard drive and the folder within in and the photos and their edits transferred accurately.   The other two folders were not named but listed shown in the library module as grey boxes as images with indications of editing.  But when I clicked on it, there was a notation that popped up that the file could not be found.
    Any ideas?
I am going to create a second new catalog and try your option #2 now.
    Thanks

  • I copied our entire music folder from old PC on tovnew iMac, all our muisc is there, but not our individual libraries have gone. and holding down the alt key when opening iTunes, brings up no options to choose or create  libarys, can i recover our liba

    Hi
I copied our entire music folder from our old pc on to the new imac, and all the apps, music etc is there, but no individual libarys, we had 5 very different ones, when pressing and holding the alt key on opeing itunes, nothing happens it just opens into itunes, no option to choose or create a libary, what am i doing wrong?

Did you copy the entire iTunes folder, not just media?  This includes the critical library.itl file.
Image of folder structure and explanation of different iTunes versions (turingtest2 post) - https://discussions.apple.com/message/13025536 and https://discussions.apple.com/message/17457605
Now you say you had 5 libraries.  If you really mean that then you would have to have copied 5 different iTunes folders in their entirety, not just one folder.  Anyway, something makes me feel you did not copy a whole iTunes folder and all its subfolders and files, you only copied the music.
On the starting with the option (alt) key held down I really don't know what to advise.  It works for me hundreds of times and just about everybody else here.  The only thing I can suggest is to hold the key down longer or perhaps start iTunes and then 1 second later hold down the key for a few seconds.

  • Moving Itunes from External HD to new imac HELP!

HELP!! Kept my iTunes on an external Hard Drive as eMac had little space! Need to move all my iTunes from the External drive to iMac - but it ain't working - any suggestions or solutions easy to follow instructions would be great
    Any help appreciated!

1 - if you are upgrading form iPhoto 6 then you can not go ofrward until you complete the upgrade - and with all versions of iPhtoo when you upgrade you can not go back - do always upgrade on the new system keeping the original in case of peoblems
2 - I have no idea how you transferred the iPhoto library - but the best way is to drag the iPhoto library from the old system to the pictures folder of the new system, run the iPhoto library upgrader and launch iPhoto

  • Moving folder from Spotlight to desktop

I just recently got a new Mac Pro to replace a defective one (yes, it happens). I didn't want to transfer all of my files from the old machine in case there was a corrupt file somewhere. Now I am looking for some of my Microsoft Word documents. A folder comes up in Spotlight, but I can't find it on my hard drive, and I'd like to move it from Spotlight to my desktop. How do I do that? Thanks.

Are you using Spotlight from the Menu Bar or a Spotlight Finder Window, to search within Finder use CMD+F enter search term in search box add where to look and all results can be moved using drag and drop or as already suggested use the view menu to show the path bar, this will show where the file is located on HD

  • Moving library from Macbook (iPhoto '09) to iMac (iPhoto '11)

    Hi
I've just purchased a new iMac with iPhoto '11 and I would like to transfer my library from my Macbook that's got iPhoto '09 to the new iMac running iPhoto '11.
How do I do this correctly please?
    Thanks

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network, Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

  • Moving music from external HD to new iMac

made the jump from PC to Mac, so far so good would be 100% happy if could get music over too. I just bought a new iMac. when i connect the external drive to the Mac it reads it just fine. (have transfered pictures and documents already.) When i go to transfer the music i get an error message that says i can not write to the Mac HD. This is very frustrating. Can anyone help?

Can someone be kind enough to list the steps needed to transfer my iTunes 8 library from the external HD to the iMac's iTunes 9 while maintaining playlists, album cover art, etc.?
My iTunes music is still on an external HD back-up.
If you only backed up your iTunes music and not the entire \Music\iTunes\ folder, you have no playlists, album cover art, etc.

  • I can't re-install my thunderbird account after reinstalling my mac (moving folder from mac to mac)

    hi all,
so i needed to uninstall and reinstall my macbook pro, so i backed up all my files including my thunderbird folder (/Users/anat/Library/Thunderbird) and the thunderbird application (in the applications folder).
    i uninstalled and reinstalled mavericks.
i put the thunderbird application inside the applications folder. i put the /Users/anat/Library/Thunderbird in /Users/anat/Library/Thunderbird. i launched thunderbird - nothing. it wants me to create a new account and profile. i can't access my old account.
i went to profile manager using the /Applications/Thunderbird.app/Contents/MacOS/thunderbird-bin -profilemanager command in Terminal. i created a new account, and chose my profile library that i had originally backed up and copied back. i launched thunderbird - still nothing, still it wants me to create a new account and i don't see any of my mails, settings, contacts. nothing.
i deleted everything (thunderbird application, thunderbird folder) and downloaded a new installation file for thunderbird. installed it. repeated all the steps of copying the previous folder in, opening profile manager, etc... still no go.
please help! i don't know what else to do.

Shut down Acrobat and any Creative Cloud application before doing this procedure.
    1    Rename caps folder.
              a.  Using the Finder menu Go>Go to Folder.
              b.  In the "Go to Folder" window put the following path:  /Library/Application Support/Adobe/
              c.  Rename the folder named "caps" at this location to something else (i.e. OLD_caps):
    /Library/Application Support/Adobe/caps
2    Install Acrobat from within the Creative Cloud application.
    3    Rename new caps folder.
              a.  Using the Finder menu Go>Go to Folder.
              b.  In the "Go to Folder" window put the following path:  /Library/Application Support/Adobe/
              c.  Rename the folder named "caps" at this location to something else (i.e. NEW_caps):
    /Library/Application Support/Adobe/caps
4 Rename the OLD_caps folder back to "caps"
5 Now you should be good.
*Note:  The "caps" folder contains the files that the Creative Cloud application reads to show what IS and IS NOT installed.

  • How do I access a folder from my hard drive and import into Lightroom?

Lightroom does not recognize the folder and tells me the photos are not online.

If you haven't yet - go into lightroom - select library  - on the left you will see "folders" click the + sign and find the folder on your computer. Lightroom will not by default add folders that do not have images in them.  Hope that helps... if you're already doing that try to describe your problem in more detail

  • I want to screen/file share from my Macbook Pro to IMac. I can't see it when I open the Shared folder.

From my macbook..I have a few times seen the IMac listed on the devices list. I don't know what I did to make it appear but I was able to
file share..etc. Now ...when I open Sharing folder from laptop..I see "IMac" as Computer name. Should this be changed? Screen Sharing:On..Allow access for all users is checked. I don't know how to launch my Imac screen again. Please advise. Thanks!

If screen share it turned on with both computers there are several ways to then screen share. First ensure Screen Sharing is selected on each computer in System Preferences - Sharing. Once this is done then open a Finder Window on the Left you will see Shared on the left side, then click the computer you want to share and you will see a screen like the following. From there click where it says Screen Share.

  • I am having a problem moving files from a iMac  in location mac in another location.  I have tried using Dropbox and the Public folder in the i disc.  When I drag the files into dropbox they become alias' and I can't open them at the other end beca

I am having a problem moving files from an imac in one location to an imac inanother location.  I have tried using Dropbox which is installed in both locations but when i drad a file ino yhe app it becomes an alias.  When I get to the other location it says I can't open the file because the " original application that created it is not present".  This is despite the fact that the app that created both files is installed in both computers.  If I use the Public folder in the idisc, when I get to the other location the file isn't there.  Am I forgetting to turn something on or off?  Should I manually sync the Public folder and if so how? Thanks

  • I moved a iMovie video from a macPro to an IMac. In iMovie the option to export the video to media browser is greyed out, but the video is not listed on iDVD media. How can I get iDVD to find it or find a way to re-export it to media browser?

I moved an iMovie from a MacPro to an iMac. In the iMovie share option Media browser is greyed out (It was previously shared to the Media b
rowser on the MacPro). The video is not listed in the iDVD media list. How do I get it listed in iDVD or find a way to re-export it?

Did you transfer a Quicktime movie files from the Mac Pro to your iMac?  If so make sure the video plays correctly in Quicktime Player.  If it does you can put it in your Movies folder and from there drag it into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.  It doesn't have to come from iMovie. You can just drag and drop into iDVD.
