Moving folders to an external hard drive - LR3.2, Mac Snow Leopard

I apologize for this right off, but after reading other threads in this forum, buying a book, and watching a video, I'm more confused than ever! I want to move (not copy), 6 months of folders, with their subfolders, meta-data and keywords, off my laptop hard drive onto an external hard drive, to free up room on my laptop. Then I want to be able to access them with the LR catalog on the external drive. The catalog I'm currently using (pointing to all my 2010 pictures) also contains more recent folders that I don't want to export, as they're still current. From my studies, there are all kinds of suggestions about creating new folders by drag and drop, using the plus sign, exporting catalogs etc., but nothing that tells me step by step how to achieve what I want to do! Could some kind person please walk me through this?
Thnaks,
Richard

To make LR "see" your external hard drive, you have to make a folder on it from within LR.
In the Library Module, click on the "+" icon in the Folders-panel, then click "Add folder".
Navigate to your external hard drive and create folder, call it whatever you want it to be.
Right click the new folder and click on "Add parent folder"; the drive should then become visible.
Then drag and drop your images into that folder.

  • How to format an external hard drive for vista and snow leopard?

I want to format an external hard drive to attach to Airport Extreme base station to us with Snow Leopard and a PC with Vista. What format should I use for read/write access for both?

I use NTFS for my external drives being used on both Macs and Windows. To get the Mac to write to NTFS, you need a separate program. I use Paragon for Mac software. It works behind the scenes. There are also some free things that do the same thing but I found them cranky and unreliable. YMMV.
Windows can not read any of the Mac disk formats without additional software.. FAT32 is fine but is extremely limited.
For the last year, I have had absolutely no problems on any computer, Mac or Windows.

  • Snow Leopard on an external hard drive; sign-in issues, Snow Leopard on an external hard drive; sign-in issues

I have an older (circa 2006) MacBook running Tiger. I've been able to install Snow Leopard on an external hard drive and when I restart, it seems to boot from the external drive. However, it asks for a user name and password and the combination I use in Tiger doesn't work. I don't get an option for an admin user/password.
    Any suggestions?

If you did a fresh installation from the original installer disk, then unless you used Migration Utility as part of the installation then you would have been stepped through the process to set up a user acount. Without that there would be no account to log into. So either you don't remember, you didn't install on an empty drive, or you used Migration Utility.
In any case, boot from the original installer, select the external drive, and under the Utilities menu choose Password Reset.
    Regards.

  • External hard drive not recognized with Snow Leopard?

This isn't a new problem, but I finally can't avoid solving it any longer!! When I updated to Snow Leopard, my iMac stopped seeing my LaCie external hard drive (firewire). I've gone through the steps at the LaCie site and checked for updates from Apple, but no luck. I do see an "unknown device" in "About this Mac," but I can't get it to recognize it.
Has this problem been dealt with? Thanks in advance.

LaCie support is usually excellent, you might give them a call, if you can't find enough on their site.
Look in Disk Utility... is it mounted, or grayed out?
Does it show a volume or not (the indented listing under the drive icon)
If it's not mounted, try choosing it and using the mount icon.
Have you tried reformatting the drive?
Launch/Utilities/Terminal and enter this command at the prompt:diskutil listPress return. Note the number of the disk (far left column) you want to unmount.
Launch/Utilities/Terminal and enter this command at the prompt:
    diskutil list
    Press return.
If it sees the disk, note the number of the disk (far left column) you want to mount.
    Then, enter this command:
    mount /dev/(number of disk)
Put in the number without parenthesis.
    Press Return.
You may also want to run sudo diskutil repairVolume /dev/(the number of the disk)
    Let us know.

  • Purchasing external hard drive before upgrading to Snow Leopard

I have an early 2009 iMac running OS X 10.5.8. We are planning on purchasing Snow Leopard to upgrade to 10.6 and beyond but would like to back up what we have on an external hard drive first. Is there anything specifically we need to watch out for or be aware of when buying an external hard drive? Thanks in advance.

I second rkaufmann87's recommendation of OWC's external hard drives.  I have 6 and have had no issues.

  • Moving Song folder to external Hard drive

I'm new to Logic Express, and just starting my initial setup. What's the smartest way to move all my song folders to an external hard drive. I tried just dragging and dropping it which moved the folder, but when I try to save any new work it doesn't automatically like to the external drive. Sorry for the silly question I'm just getting started.
    Thanks

  • I moved itunes file to external hard drive and want to move the file on my pc to recycle bin. When I move i get an error message that it cannot delete ituneshelper.dll access is denied. Can I move that file to the recycle bin?

I am trying to free up space on my pc and moving itunes files to external hard drive. I have followed instructions and believe I have file copied to new drive, but I am having trouble moving file to recycle bin as the instructions say. I am getting the following error message: cannot delete ituneshelper.dll:access denied, make sure disk is not full or write protected and file not in use. I know the file is not in use when trying to move. Any help would be most appreciated. I am on Windows XP.

Yes. And you should not have moved that folder. Put it back. To move your iTunes library move the folder from User's Music.

  • One of the folders on my external hard drive has transformed into a unix executable file and I can no longer access my files. Is there any way to save the data?

One of the folders on my external hard drive has transformed into a unix executable file and I can no longer access my files. Is there any way to save the data?

Wow, have seen Files do that, but a whole Folder as I recall!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

  • Can't unlock folders on my External Hard drive.....

When i try to delete or add stuff to certain folders on my external hard drive I am unable to.
Under folder info it says "you can only read" and when I try to uncheck the locked button it doesn't change.
I've been looking through the forums but I cant find any easy, understandable way to fix this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Whether it can fixed or not depends on how the drive is formatted. If it is FAT32 you may be out of luck, but if it is in a standard Mac format you should be able to fix it. Take a look at this thread:

For FAT32 I have been unable to find any information at all on either the cause or a solution.

Now I have multiple folders in my external hard drive and want to know how to condense all folders into yearly folders instead. Anyone know how to do this?

I want the folders I already backed up to come together into one folder when that year is over. Is there a way to manually do that or automatic through TM?
I'm quite sure there is no "automatic" way to do this. I've never heard of anyone trying it either. I suppose if you wanted try it, you could simply create a new folder in the same partition TM is on, label it for that year, then gather all the days for that year and drag/drop them into the folder. I suspect (but do not know) you'd be risking the continuity of your backups, meaning TM would simply start over again, meaning that next back up would start a new series of backups, with the first one roughly equalling the entire capacity of your internal HD, instead of adding only the new data to the previous backup. Once again, I would recommend against it, unless you're fine with TM starting a new series of backups if it doesn't work out the way you want it to. Hope you'll post back with results so we can learn from it.

Hello, in previous versions of Final Cut Pro 10 was no problem moving projects to an external hard drive. In the latest version I do not get this. Anybody have any tips?

    File>Open Library>New.
Set the location of your new library in the save dialog.
In the Libraries pane, drag the event that contains your project into the new library. It will make a copy. Or use the Move or Copy commands from the File menu.

  • I am not able to use my external hard drive with my Mac.

I am not able to use my external hard drive with my Mac. It was initially used with my Windows 7 laptop. Now when I insert my Hard drive in the Mac, it doesn't allow me to delete, format, make folders or copy new files on to my hard drive. I no longer have a Windows PC and am stuck. I tried going to Disc utilities, selected my HD, clicked on Erase and then changed the Format type to MS-DOS (FAT) but no luck .. Any other steps or advice?

It was likely formatted in NTFS which is readable by the Mac, but not writeable.
You should be able to reformat the disk in Disk Utility.
After having copied all the data off of it, you can try re-partitioning it.
Select the hard drive in the disk list in Disk Utility. Hard drives are the device itself, are left-aligned in the list, and are usually named with the manufacturer, size, and model number.
    Click on the Partition tab.
Select 1-partition from the partition menu.
Click the Options button and set to GUID
Set the format to Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Give the Volume a name and click Apply.
