Moving from an old graphite AP to Time Capsule

I'm about to replace my AP graphite with Time Capsule. Will I be able to simply integrate into (adopt) my existing network name, etc. Or, if I have to define a new network, can I set it up while the old one is running? Or, should I switch off the old network and then set up the TC?
JB

Since you should perform a complete power recycle of all of your network components when making component changes, it would probably be simplest to swap the routers after powering down.
I suggest the following:
o Power-off the modem, Graphite, and both of your Macs. Order is not critical, but leave everything powered-off when switching out the routers.
o Physically replace the Graphite with the Time Capsule (TC) being sure to connect the Ethernet cable coming from the modem to the WAN (circle-of-dots) port on the TC.
o Connect either of your Macs directly to one of the available LAN (opposing arrows) port on the TC.
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 10 minutes.
o Power-on the TC; Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the Mac connected directly to the TC.
In this configuration, you should be able to access the TC using the AirPort Utility. The default configuration of the TC will provide a basic, non-encrypted, wireless network that should provide you with Internet access. Using the Ethernet-connected Mac, verify that you can access the Internet via this media.
If successful, use the AirPort Utility to configure the TC as required. You could use the same Network Name or choose another as you see fit. Once done use the other Mac (not directly connected) to verify that it can access the Internet wirelessly. If it can, then you can go ahead and disconnect the first Mac so that you can return to using its wireless for connection to the TC.

  • Moving from Air Disk/Airport Extreme to Time capsule

I have just bought a TC and want to move my back up from my old AirDisk to the new TC.
The problem is (I think) that the reason for all this change is my MBP did not enjoy the Snow Leopard upgrade and that resulted in a format to the HDD and a (apparently) flawless restore from the Time machine back up.
However, now that I have moved the Sparcebundle file from the AirDisk to the TC, things are not so happy.
TimeMachine is not recognising the old back up, and I am getting this message:
"The backup disk image “/Volumes/Tardis-1/Titan - Roberts Mac_0017f2c8c24d.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error 107)."
Yes, Yes. I know, I called my backup disk Tardis. Lets ignore that please and move on.
Here are some of the things that I think might be wrong. I am not quite sure if I am missing something or what to do to resolve things if I am right.
In the restore of my laptop, it got a new name. I think I have the name right, but I am not 100%. Could this be a problem?
The TC disk is registering as Tardis 1 when I am trying to connect to the old backup file and I am sure the disk is just Tardis (both in the error messages and if I do a get info). When I look at it through the Airport Utility its telling me its called Tardis so I am not sure where that 1 is coming from. My only thought is I had the old Tardis (still called that) connected to the computer along side the new TC Tardis to do the transfer so maybe thats got something to do with it.
Conversely if I do a new backup, the new sparcebundle 'get infos' as being on Tardis.
If I try to start a new back up there is no problem. It creates a Titan - Roberts Mac.sparsebundle with no problems and begins backing up. But thats going to lose me 12 months of back ups and that REALLY not ok
Any pointers or directions much appreciates.
    Thanks
    R

I won't try to address your other issues, but you should be able to access those 12 months of backups by doing a click-and-hold (or control-click) on the Time Machine icon in the Dock, then selecting "Browse Other Time Machine disks".

I moved from an old macbook to a new one.  I have installed Office for Mac 2011. I copied all my files from my old notebook onto a hard drive.  On trying to setup my mail, i went into my hard drive and accessed microsoft user identities, office 2011 and it shows the database but wont let me select it.  Its almost as if the file is there but not accessable.  I desperately need to access my old mail.  How do I do this?  I am fairly confident that I copied all files off my old notebook.  Is there a way for me to search for the Database file?  Maybe I copied it to a different location?  Urgent help please.

Hello mafrerichs and welcome to Apple Support Communities,
Simplest way is to use Target Disk mode:
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode - Apple Support
and hook to another Mac and use CCC or SuperDuper and clone your HD to another drive.
You could also pull the drive out of your MBP and use an external USB case or SATA - USB dongle to hook it to another Mac.

    It's good for that . . .
But also I don't keep all my stuff in my Mac.
    But not for that.
This older and not day-by-day usage files I want to store in the time machine.
You can do that (see below), but how are you going to back them up?   If your only copies are on the TC, when (not if) it fails, you risk losing your only copy of the data.
Is it possible to split TC in two partitions.
No, but there are some workarounds, including making a fixed-size disk image on it to "reserve" some space.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule.
But you still won't have backups of the stuff you put there.
You don't say what kind of Mac you have.  If it's a desktop model, just keep the external HD connected to it, and let Time Machine back it up along with your internal HD.
However, it sounds like you may have a laptop, where that's not going to be convenient.  In that case, your best bet might be to copy the external HD to a disk image on the TC as above, then keep the HD in a safe place.
To finish, when i enter the TC and go through the Time line how can I get a file from there and move it back to Mac hd.
Via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
You might also want to review the Time Machine Tutorial, and perhaps browse the rest of the FAQ.

  • How can I do to transfer all iTunes library from my Mac book Pro to Time capsule without to lost the alphabetic sequence of songs

How can I do to transfer all iTunes library from my Mac book Pro to Time capsule without to lost the alphabetic sequence of songs & artists? What is the correct way to transfer my 3000 songs to Time capsule, to free the memory of my Mac? Thanks a lot. Carlo Molinari (Rome - Italy)

How can I do to transfer all iTunes library from my Mac book Pro to Time capsule without to lost the alphabetic sequence of songs & artists? What is the correct way to transfer my 3000 songs to Time capsule, to free the memory of my Mac?
The following are the basic steps to transfer your iTunes Media folder from your MacBook Pro to the Time Capsule (TC). Note: You will leave the iTunes Library, and its associated files, on the MacBook Pro as you will only be moving the media files.
Be sure to shutdown iTunes before starting.
Next, move the "iTunes Music" folder, located in ~/Music/iTunes/, to wherever you want on your TC's internal hard drive. Remember to leave the Album Artwork folder, as well as the three individual library files where they are on the MacBook Pro.
Wait a while. If you have a large library, this will take a bit of time.
Once the iTunes Media folder has been transferred, open iTunes. Note: It will still be looking at your local iTunes Library on the MBP. As such it will think that the iTunes Media folder is still on the MBP as well. However, we just relocated it to the TC. If you attempt to select any song, you will get an error that the song is "missing." Not to worry, we will correct this in the next step.
We need to tell iTunes the media has moved to the TC's internal HDD. To change where iTunes "looks" for the media, open iTunes and go to the Advanced > General tab and use the "Change..." button to tell it where your new "iTunes Music" library is located.
Once this is done iTunes will likely pop up a progress window telling you that it's re-analyzing your library. Let it complete this step.
As a final check to make sure everything when as planned, click on any library file from within iTunes and press cmd + i (or View > Get Info). At the bottom of the Summary tab in that window is a "Where:" section that tells you the actual file path to that piece of media; be sure that path begins with the name of your TC's drive, and not "Macintosh HD."

Go to the airport utility and erase the TC disk.. a quick erase is fine and takes less than 1min usually.
A one pass erase takes several hours depending on how big the hard disk is.. but is somewhat safer in that it tests the drive condition. I normally don't bother for a TM backup.
When you start over you should be able to fit both backups on the TC.. assuming the disk is 2x larger at least than the space used on both the MB and the iMac.
If not you can also add a USB drive to the TC, and use that for one of the computers.
The slowest one is best.. as USB is slow.. but fast enough for wireless you won't notice much.

you should never (ab)use a designated backup-setup for 'ordinairy' storage tasks.
plus, the wireless connection to TC is too slow for iMovie.
    purchase any ext. usb-harddrive, 500Gigs starting at 50$ ...

  • How do I restore my iPhoto library from my old macbook (stored in time machine) to my new iMac?

I have my old macbook backed up on my time machine.  The problem is, when i enter time machine on my new iMac, I can only restore files from the current iMac's backups.  I can go to finder, and find my files under the "shared>airport time capsule" menu, but I don't know how to safely and accurately restore the iPhoto library to the current iMac's iPhoto.
Most of the searches I did on this topic kept advising to enter time machine, find your file and hit restore, but I can not select files from my macbook's backup in time machine on the current iMac.

While in Time Machine, press the key combination shift-command-C. The front window will show all mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible. Select the one you want and navigate to the files you want to restore.
If you need to restore from a backup of the hidden user Library folder, first select a snapshot, then press shift-command-G. A Go to Folder dialog will open. In it, you'll enter the path to the folder. The dialog will help you by automatically completing the parts of the path when you start to type them.
The path begins with slash character ("/"). Enter that. The rest of the parts will be separated by slashes.
The next part is the date and time of the current snapshot. Enter a "2", and the rest of the date should be filled in automatically. Press the right-arrow key to jump to the end of the path. Enter a slash to start the next part.
Next is the name of the volume (usually "Macintosh HD" unless you gave it a different name.) Start to type that, then jump to the end and enter a slash.
The next part is "Users", followed by a slash.
Next is your (short) user name, which is also the name of your home folder.
Finally, enter "Library", then press return. You should now be in the Library folder. From there you can get around as in the Finder.
This seemed to do the trick.  I found the iPhoto library file and chose restore.  The question now is where to put the iPhoto library file.

  • How do I selectively erase old data from old computers on my Time Capsule to make room for my new computer data?

My new computer did one complete backup on the Time Capsule now I get the message that there is insufficient room to complete further backups.
(128 GB available, my backup size is 170GB but the time capsule is 998GB)
I suspect that information from old computers is there. How do I selectively remove that information or do I have to erase the whole Time Capsule and start over with my new computer and backup again?

Check the info here.. but big warning .. it often fails.. if you want to keep your old backups archive them off the TC to USB drive.. then erase and start fresh clean backup.

Hi! My iTunes ask me to restore from a backup when I connect my new iPhone 5. I have done the backup process but it still ask me to do it. How do I get iTunes to understand that this is done?
I connected my iPhone and restore it from a backup from my old iPhone 4. It worked well. But when i connect the iPhone to iTunes it ask all the time the same thing.
    1. this is a new iPhone bla bla or...
    2. restore from a old copy. (strange is that it says that this was done 1982 all the time?!?!).
The MacBook Pro is new and I have the latest iTunes 11.0.1. (12)
    Glad for any help!!
    Best regards
    Pontus

Maybe you should have connected as a new phone instead of trying to put an iPhone 4 backup on an iPhone 5.
Try restoring it to factory setings and start again. If all your music and contact s are on the computer then you should be good to go.

  • Is there a way copy old backups from my ext. HD to Time Capsule?

Is there a way to copy the TimeMachine files from my 250GB external hard drive to the TimeCapsule?
If so, what steps do I need to take to do this and insure that everything transfers flawlessly?
    Thanks
    Shimy

I wouldn't try it. I suggest starting with a new backup on the Time Capsule. The first back up should be performed by Ethernet cable.
If you don't need any of the files on the old drive following a successful Time Capsule back up, just erase the drive and its files and use it for data storage.

  • Moving old backups to new Time Capsule on OS 10.5.8

    Hello
Because my powerbook is not dual core I'm still running 10.5.8. I recently bought a Time Capsule to serve as both my wireless network, and new Time Machine backup drive, among other things.
I'd like to save my backups I've done in the past (currently stored on an iOmega external HD) over to Time Capsule before doing a new backup. I read on a support link on the apple site called Time Machine 101, on how to do this, but the subject heading was "Mac OS X v10.6: How to transfer your back ups from your current hard drive to a new hard drive." So that led me to think maybe I wouldn't be able to do this with 10.5. Does anyone know if I can do what I'm hoping to do?
Much thanks as always in advance.

    GoBraves wrote:
Should be good. Are you saying I can only backup one drive to Time Machine?
Oops, sorry, I missed this one.
No, you can back up as many drives/partitions as you want (and have room for), as long as they're internal or externally-connected via FireWire or USB, and are formatted properly.
When you first connect such a drive after setting-up TM, it will usually put it into the +Do Not Back Up+ box in TM Preferences > Options automatically. To back it up, just select it there and click the minus sign at the bottom. If it's shown in gray, you can't remove it. That means it's either your TM backup drive/partition, or isn't formatted for a Mac.
I'll be using the backup HDs for either storage of my music library or photo library, and for being the storage device for some FLAC files I'll be downloading/sharing. (Dave Matthews Band geek here.) The FLACs I wouldn't need to backup, but the music/photos I'd want to.
Do you mean the current backup HD, that will no longer be used for TM? If so, yes, that'll work fine.
If you're going to be using the Time Capsule's internal HD for other data, besides Time Machine backups though, you'll eventually have a problem, as Time Machine, by design, will fill up all the space available to it. There is a sort of a workaround, in the blue box in #3 of the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum, but a better solution would be to attach a USB drive to the TC. Use one for backups, the other as you want. In that configuration, however, Time Machine cannot back it up, so you'll need to make other arrangements.

  • Not able to delete a backup from old computer in my time capsule

So, there is an 400gb disk on my time capsule that I can not delete when acessing throght "SHARED".
There is a lock icon on the right bottom! I already tried to disk repair it, but it still not working.
    What should I do?!

Is there other stuff on the disk you need.. if not simply use the airport utility and erase the disk.. a quick erase will take less than 2min..
If there is stuff you need on the disk you need to use terminal command to delete the file.. but I am unsure what you mean by 400gb disk .. is it a sparsebundle from Time Machine or a dmg file or what is it exactly.
Did you try the instructions from Pondini.
    Q12 here. http://pondini.org/TM/12.html
It does not cover Mavericks.. which is strange and has some issues with permissions rather worse than previous OS.
You may find manually mounting the TC helps.. particularly just having the disk password set correctly.
A TM backup is easier to delete from the computer that created it.. Is that available??

  • OLD Airport Express + NEW Time Capsule (dual) = nightmare

ok i have been trying all day to get my (very very very old, like 5 years old) AE working again, but simply cannot. feel like a total meathead, and have perhaps confused the issue with trying to install a time capsule at the same time?
i have a big-ish room (30 sq m) but no walls and def no issues with signal strength. in fact the AE and the TC are right next to each other and my MBP is about 5 meters away.
anyway here's what happened, any help greatly appreciated!
i have just moved flat and had to call the ISP because the wifi modem/router was playing up. turns out there's so many wireless signals in the building they're all vying for the same channel. so he manually changed the modem/router channel (to what i don't know) so as to be no conflict. so far so good, the wifi internet works again. phew.
buuuuut, now my AE won't connect to the network like it did in the prev flat same network name, same physical setup, but no love. all i get is a steady blinking orange light. always. in fact Airport Utility will only recognise the AE directly after a factory reset, and whenever it tries to then write the new settings and restart, i get the spinning wheel of death till eventually Airport Utility just wigs out saying the AE can't connect to the network.AE is running firmware 6.3 (the highest it will take) at this stage.
so i think maybe i'll just try to set up the Time Capsule, make that the main network node (not the wifi modem/router) and then connect the AE to that. And it worked! Well for about 1 nanosecond where i heard my itunes coming from the speakers. but then..... nothing. iTunes would not connect again and actually gave the error you get when someone else is using the speakers, but i can assure you no one else was. its only me in the house.
so anyway then i read that if i drop the AE firmware down to 6.1.1 i might get some love. tried that and.... nothing. now it won't connect to the TC nor the modem/router. so i push the firmware up again to 6.3 and now it won't connect to the TC - ***?!?! and still the AE only appears in the Airport Utility directly after a factory reset...
aaaaaaarrrrrrrgggggghhhhh, i am going banannas! i am desperate for help because i work from home and need my music from decent speakers! these little MBP tinny speaker things are just horrible...
If only the TC had an audio out i could just throw the AE away! have heard something about WDS or something? or could i even use an ethernet cable to wire the TC and AE together? or is it just time to buy a new AE? even though all i really need is to wirelessly get my music to my speakers and it seems a bit like overkill for that perhaps?
any and all help greatly appreciated, as i'm going to be bald very soon at this rate i'm so stressed and depressed

Hello zoltancsaki. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Is your goal with the 802.11b/g AirPort Express Base Station (AX) just to use it for streaming? How about the TC? Will it only be used for Time Machine backups? Do you prefer to leave the ISP's wireless router as you main Internet router? What is the make/model of this router? Finally, I assume that you will want to employ encryption for your wireless network ... would that be with the WEP, WPA, or WPA2 standard?
