Moving from Corel Ventura into InDesign CS4 - prints dark

My company has been using Corel Ventura for years, up to version 10.   We are now switching in InDesign CS4, but everything is printing dark. We use it to publish black & white manuals, including some photos & vector art.
Ventura had an essentially unmanaged color workflow - everything was set to generic - i.e. - "Generic RGB" & "Generic CMYK"
In Indesign, currently we are using "North American General Purpose 2". The files are printed to a postscript file in InDesign.   Then made into a PDF via Distiller. The settings for the PS file & Distiller we are using came from LightingSource.com.
I was assuming that the problem came up in the creation of the PS file - under Color Handling - it is set to "Let InDesign Determine Colors". So I took the other option & used "Let PS printer determine colors"   The pages print lighter now, but they are actually too light. I'm not sure what to try next, given that any direct alteration of the printer setup is out of the question.

Not knowing more, this is a possible solution if you have Photoshop:
1. In Photoshop with no documents open: Edit Color Settings. By CMYK, Custom CMYK. Black Generation "Maximum"
2. Hit OK, but NOT to the whole Color Settings dialog, just the Custom CMYK dialog. Again in the CMYK pull down, "Save CMYK" Put the profile in your Color Sync folder where InDesign will recognize it. After you save it CANCEL. You don't really want to alter your Photoshop color settings, you just want to create the Max Black Generation profile
3. In InDesign. Create a top most layer on master page. Create a white box to fill the whole page. Set Blend Mode to "Color" Lock the layer.
4. Change the transparency blend space to RGB (Under Edit)
5. Assign the new Max Black CMYK profile to the ID document (Edit: Assign Profile)
6. Check with Separations Preview, you should have K channel only
7. Export PDF/X1a. By Output: Destination: "Document CMYK." You must flatten transparency when you output PDF, and X-1a will do this. The PDF result will be black and white, K channel only. Verify in Acrobat.
This process converts an all color InDesign document to K only CMYK. Dot Gain will be standard 20% but can be changed in step 1 when you create the custom CMYK.
Any grayscale images placed should not be affected by this workflow.
This process is the closest thing I know of to grayscale color management in InDesign.

Can't Place a specific Word 2010 docx into InDesign CS4

I'm trying to use the Place command to bring the text from a specific Word 2010 docx into InDesign CS4.
I've successfully brought in several Word 2010 documents (docx extention) to InDesign CS4 documents using the place command.
I have one specific 30 page document (which is no loarger than others which have been successful), and when I use the place command with this file, nothing happens (and no text gets loaded onto the cursor for placement.
I've tried re-saving the word doc, even pasted its contents into a new Word doc and still can't get the Place command to work.
THere's nothing particularly unique about the file - doesn't have any odd embedded content, just a 30 page text document writtin in word.
Any ideas what could be going wrong or how to fix it?
I've tried restarting both Word and InDesign without any change (and the rest of my word files can be Placed without problem, so I imagine it's something specific to that file.
NOTE - re-saving in RTF format lets the Place command work but leaves a bunch of empty squares/boxes (not sure if these were for tabs or empty spaces or what really??)
Can work around this for now, but would like to know how to get the place command working with decent size Word Docs( docx for word 2010 if that matters).

It turned out that for at least one particular document the OP had used some blank paragraphs as spacers at the start of the text, and that the style assigned to the second paragraph used a combination of left and right paragraph indents that was more than the width of the document page, sending the entire document (except for the empty first paragraph) into overset. I can't say for sure, but I think the Word styles might have been mapped to ID styles because I found no trace of the indents in the Word file itself, only in the ID document, and I had no trouble placing that Word file in my own ID test document. I did have some trouble placing another .docx file supplied by the OP in CS4, but not in later versions, and conversion to .doc solved that problem.

From Pagemaker 7 to Indesign CS4

My employer is looking to upgrade from Pagemaker 7 to Indesign CS4 for our publication needs. I have Indesign CS2 at home, so it definitely looks like Indesign will make things easier. However, the main publication we will be using in Indesign relied heavily on the "Paste Special" function in Pagemaker, and I don't know what the equivalent of that function is in Indesign. (Maybe there's that function in CS4 but I know it's not in CS2) If there isn't a similar function in CS4, what function can I use to paste an Excel file on a page where, if edited in Excel, the Indesign page would also update. Does that make sense?

For some reason I was thinking of the paste in place It had a different name in PM and I was thinking paste special was it.

The problem may be in the HP print drivers.
Printing to Epson printers works, printing to HP 132, 5000 or 2200 produces slanted type, even at Adobe.
Printing to disk as a Postscript printer and then printing the ps file using the pdf printer works fine.

Corel Ventura to InDesign workflow?

Where I work, we have this big huge manual (400 pages) that we put out once a year. It's the only project that I have to work on in Corel Ventura (a program I'd never even seen before coming to this job!). But as far as I can tell, Ventura is not being updated. So eventually we're going to need to move this book into another program (hopefully InDesign). We already have trouble with advertisements, sometimes even having to save PDFs into TIF files. It'd be a huge chore to redo the whole manual, but it's bound to happen eventually. So here's what I'm trying to find out:
A large portion of the book is just a directory. We have a database here -- its contents are output as an ASCII file which is linked to the Ventura document. All the paragraph and character styles are tagged in the ASCII file. So, as soon as the database is exported, the Ventura file updates. Can this be done in InDesign? Would it be done with tagged text or XML or something (2 things I don't know much about)? Are there issues this type of job would face in InDesign that would make this transition a bad idea? Maybe a different program would be preferable?
I know I've seen a few folks mention Ventura on this board, so I'm hoping someone who's familiar with that program might know the differences between what it can do and what InDesign can do regarding long documents.
I just panicked because I couldn't open the Ventura help files when I picked up on this year's manual (I'd gotten a new computer). Luckily, the I.T. department was able to get them working for me. It's difficult to work in a program only once a year and with limited background in it. I doubt I can even find a book on Ventura 10 (seems like I looked once but no one had them). Eek!

I'm afraid it's not going to be structured enough to do it entirely with styles (it's close but some of the listings have extra sections, etc.). At least not without a fair amount of cleanup. Whereas the programmers on staff can force an export already tagged if I can figure out what to tell them to do. The problem with this job is that we want the directory to be as up-to-date as possible. So, by automating the process, I can dump in the directory at the last minute before we go to press. I need to eliminate as much cleanup as possible in order to get the most current version!
I'll study the old text files that are being dumped into Ventura. But ultimately I have to recreate the directory from a new database so am thinking I need to figure out the tags that should go around each line and send that to the programmers. Well, I suppose I could have them generate the Ventura text files and then I could go through those. But ultimately I'd prefer to get rid of that step. This will take quite a while to figure out -- it's likely that it will be the 2010 directory before we can update (the directories are printed in January!).
Is this what tagged text is designed for, or am I trying to do something odd with it?
Ken, thank you so much for the offer of help! I likely will email you when I first get into this. I have no idea what problems I'm going to run into. I'm starting by just trying to make sure I don't suggest a major change that won't be feasible (I haven't even suggested this yet, but I'm going to). But I think this book is going to be impossible to update in Ventura in a few more years -- I think that program is just getting too outdated, even embedding the ads is starting to become problematic.
I love InDesign, but I have heard FrameMaker might be better for a long book of this nature (?). Although I don't know that program so am going to try to get this into something I know.
One of the things I'd lose from Ventura (and I hope this won't be a deal-breaker with the staff here) -- when the database is exported, the Ventura files update automatically, and I mean as soon as I open them the update has already happened -- new page count is correct, etc. I'm thinking with InDesign I'd have to update the linked file each time it changed. I think that's a reasonable exchange and only takes a minute. Do you know of any other differences in the way InDesign would handle this?

InDesign CS4 -Printing Orientation Woes

I was able to print successfully in InDesign CS2 & 3 but now, with CS4, the paper direction/orientation continuously flips to vertical when horizontal is set. The file is still printed at the 100% but printing vertical. I am opening the same documents that printed correctly before - with no changes to anything in Document Setup. And this happens on ALL documents printed from InDesign CS4. What do I need to alter to make this print properly again?

Is there a way to import content from a wiki into InDesign?

Hi all,
I'm writing the documentation for a software product and I'd like to use a wiki to create the documentation using several users to author the starting content. However, an export from a wiki is never very attractive so I'd like to be able to bring the content into InDesign from the wiki, to massage it to look better. I see that I can export OpenDocument XML from Mediawiki, or a PDF, but can I use either for my InDesign document? This is a large project with over 1,000 printed pages of documentation. It also needs to be undertaken fairly swiftly, which is why I wanted to go this route.
I have InDesign CS5 and have not yet installed a wiki so it can be anything you suggest.

Yeah, I have an idea... Have you tried the pdf export yet? If it is already formated then that maybe the way to go. But you may need acrobat to save it in another format. If I recall InDesign renders the pdf, which would make editing the pdf in Indesign useless.
OK, did a quick test with PDF. Load the PDF into Acrobat and save as a word file. Place the word file into InDesign and you will have the styles paragraphs. You just have to alter the style taste, may be fix a few paragraphs if needed.

The writer for the project has used cross-references in MS Word for areas like the TOC, index and page references ("See page X for more information").
Is it possible to import these cross-references into InDesign so that the InDesign document functions like the Word document with the cross-references?
I am thinking no because I am having a ton of trouble with it so far, but wanted to get a definite answer from an expert.
When I import the text, the cross-references appear in InDesign in the Hyperlinks/cross-reference panel. However, InDesign says they need to be updated based on the way the text flowed in InDesign. And when I click the auto update button, all sorts of funky stuff happens and basically -- the cross-references create a bunch of typos and become junk.
Thoughts? Knowledge on this topic?

I can't speak to general or specific causes of your cross-reference problems. However, I believe that InDesign x-refs behave a bit differently in CS4, CS5, and CS5.5, and if you have either of these earlier releases, you might try them for comparison.
Also, you might want to look into the free trial of DTP Tools' cross-references plug-in for InDesign, at dtptools.com, to see if it's more successful than InDesign's built-in x-refs.

My requirement is to replace any of the images from the required frame/s of indesign document through scripting (I already have frame id of which image needs to be replaced). InDesign CS4 Printing issue

I use InDesign CS4 in my job as a church office manager. I print bulletins that are usually 3 letter-sized pages, landscape, 2-sided, and newsletters that are 2 11x17 pages, landscape, 2-sided. I'm working in Mac OS 10.5.8.
Until today, I was using a fairly old HP 8100dn printer. When I upgraded from CS3 to CS4 last summer, I found a strange thing: I couldn't print duplex on letter-sized paper from InDesign. No matter what settings I selected, the printing would not duplex. As a workaround, I had to export everything as a PDF and print from Acrobat, where the duplexing worked fine.
Weirdly, 11x17 duplex printing worked correctly from InDesign.
I never solved the problem, but when I posted this on the forum last summer, one responder said that it might have had something to do with the 8100's age and its PostScript Level 2 emulation.
Just today, my office got a new(er) printer, an HP 8150dn. This one has PostScript Level 3 emulation.
Precisely the same problem. Letter-sized won't duplex from ID; 11x17 will. Exporting letter-sized documents to PDF and printing from Acrobat is once again the workaround. It's not the worst thing in the world, but it is a bit of a hassle.
Does anyone have any sort of idea about why this is happening, or better, how it might be fixed?

Well, I fixed it, I think… I googled "Printing issues in Mac OS," which led me to install Gutenprint 5.2.5 — whatever the heck that is — and suddenly duplex printing worked in both landscape and portrait on letter-sized paper.
Unfortunately, and yet not at all surprisingly, I now couldn't print to 11x17 at all. No matter what I did, the printer used Tray 2 (letter), or told me to put custom paper in Tray 1.
So, as a last-ditch attempt to resolve this before I jumped off the roof, I reset the printer to its factory defaults and deleted all traces of it from Mac OS's Printer and Fax window.
Then I created one new printer called "8150 (Gutenprint)" using the Gutenprint driver, and one called "8150 (11x17)" using the default HP driver, both using the same IP address. Lo and behold, when I select the one, I can print duplexed on letter size, and when I select the other, I can do the same on 11x17.
I don't know if this is the sort of thing that a real tech-head would condone, but it finally seems to work. Since I'd never be printing to both printers simultaneously, I figure I can live with this.
If anyone cares to explain to me in layman's terms what Gutenprint is all about, I'd love to be educated…

Adobe InDesign CS4 Printing To 11 x 18 Issues

I am trying to print an 11 x 18 in Adobe InDesign CS4 however, it will print automatically to an 8.5 x 11. I have tried to set the printing preferences but It defaults back to 8.5 x 11. This issue only happens in InDesign and not other Adobe products. My operating system is Windows 7 64-bit and the printer is a Toshiba E-Studio 3530C. Could this be a pnnter driver issue with Adobe InDesign CS4.

Try this: go into the print driver (the "Setup..." button at the bottom of InDesign's print dialog box) and set your custom paper size there. Then, back in the InDesign dialog, set the Paper Size to "Defined By Driver."

InDesign CS4 Printing help

I realize that "two-sided" copying isn't a function of InDesign however, after I installed CS4, i have lost the ability to do a "two-sided" print. I tried to adjust the settings in my print dialogue boxes but that did nothing either.
Can anyone give help or tips? I duplex a lot and I need to figure this out!

I upgraded to InDesign CS4 a month or so ago. I'm using a 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, Mac OS X 10.5.7, and having trouble printing to two different printers. I had a margin issue with an HP Color Laser 5550, where I never had one before. Then today, I discovered that I could not duplex print to a HP Laser 3005, again this was never a problem with CS3.
So needless to say this thread was required reading for me.
Of course, the pdf work-around worked. But, I wanted to get to the bottom of this. Well, putting together info from a couple of different posts, I think I've discovered the duplexing problem (at least).
In the past, I have religiously used the Page Setup tab in the printer window to set paper size, and when I did so the Set-up Paper Size would automatically show "Defined by Driver."
Well, now, one can follow the same process (setting the paper size in the driver via Page Setup), and when one returns to the main printing menu, the Set-up Paper Size "window" will not have changed, in other words, it will not say "Defined by Driver" but rather "Letter" or "Legal." When I manually changed the setting to "Defined by Driver," lo and behold, I could duplex!
So the theory espoused above about whether the printer or InDesign was controlling the printer does seem to be the key issue. If you're using garden-variety desktop printers, you're most likely emulating Postscript, and the InDesign is expecting Postscript accuracy and not finding it.

Automatic update from Word source into Indesign

Hi I have followed all threats and cannot seem to find a solution to my query.
I have to complete a 280page annual report within a very short period of time. Based on the client it seems that there will be multiple changes on content after layout is completed. Is it possible to import the Word docuement into Indesign and when the client makes changes in the original Word docuement the changes are affected directly in Indesign?
I had a look at the XML options and discussions but being a lyout designer the explenations of tags etc mean zero.
Obvioulsy I would re-edit stylesheets and layout styles in Indesign but would ideally then like to export the content / link the content to the original file so that the client can make changes in Word and I do not have to manually re-layout pages or make changes from proofs.
Please can someone indicate whether this is at all possible and wether you have to have knowledge of scriptig etc should it be possible.

In the Preferences, you can select to treat a placed Text document just like an image: you get a link in your Links palette, and if the original file is modified, you can "update" it just like an images.
However: the text will re-import just like it did the very first time -- including the formatting of the text. If you formatted the text in InDesign, that will be lost. A very rigid workflow is the solution in that case: if your editor uses Word Styles, and he did so consequent and correct, you can automatically have them mapped to your styles in the InDesign document. You can actually help your editor getting the good styles by exporting your text to RTF, so he can work on it and then return the document.

Hi, I have those lines of script that place the pdf into InDesign, but in the process new frame gets created in which the pdf is placed, and I need it to be placed into my existing frame. How could I do it:

Yes, you are right, I am stuck for a different reason, it does places the second page.
What I think is going on, and maybe there is a better approach to it than the one I am going about it: when I have single page pdf for the 1st page and single page pdf for the 2nd page, my script first tries to upload 1st pdf as multi-page just in case there is only one pdf with both files. And for some reason it uploads single page pdf twice (into the second InDesign page as well when there is no second page in the 1st pdf [If I could avoid that all together would be great]). So my script verifies if the pdf uploaded into the 2nd page is 1st page of 1st pdf then it deletes it. And then it looks if there is a file for the second page, and uploads it. So my new challenge is that when it verifies what page of the pdf is uploaded into the 2nd page of InDesign after the 1st pdf upload, it just crashes, and it worked with the previous way of placing pdfs (the green line of the script).
The second my issue is that, as it places the files, it dis-attaches the frames from the master page, and I need them to be still half attached. For the same reason new frames created by place command - is a problem for me. Maybe easier way, if it's possible at all, half-attach those new frames to the Master page afterwords. (This is the main goal for me).
