Moving from Dual 2.7 G5 to Mac Pro 2.8 GHZ

Can I remove the second hard-drive in the Dual 2.7 G5 and place it into one of the bays in a new Mac Pro 2.8?
I currently have all of my software, documents, graphics files, etc. on this drive, and transferring it this way would be simplest and put the hard-drive to good use.
I plan on reinstalling all of the software on the pre-installed Mac Pro hard-drive and use the hard-drive from the G5 for documents, graphics files, etc.
Am I approaching this correctly?
Thanks!

It will move over just fine. As you know you cannot boot from a PowerPC operating system in the MacPro, but the drives will cross over mount and operate just fine. Your plan is just right.

  • I just moved from a G5 PowerMac to a Mac Pro with one drive running Yosemite and one running Snow Leopard, Do I need Lion to be able to upgrade iPhotos

How can I see my iPhotos from a G5 PowerMac on a MacPro running Yosemite and Snow Leopard? Is Lion a more advance system that Snow Leopard?

The last iPhoto version you can run with Snow Leopard is iPhoto 9.2.4, and Yosemite needs iPhoto 9.6.
Move your photos to your Yosemite partition, if you want to use iPhoto with Photo Streams and other iCloud features.
As you are asking about Lion, you can run iPhoto iPhoto 9.2.3 or iPhoto 9.2.4 both with Lion and SnowLeopard, but there is no iPhoto version, that runs both on Yosemite and Snow Leopard, or Lion and Yosemite.

  • We just moved from a Windows server to a Mac server with our Macs -problem!

We just moved from a Windows server to a Mac server with our Mac Network!!!
    Problem:
Now, when we create files from our personal computers, no one else can write them. We can all read these files, but when we make changes we have to save a version! This wasn't happening on the Windows server, so I can only guess that it's a setting on the Mac? (G4 Laptop running 10.4.5)
Can anyone help me figure out what setting needs to be changed?
Thank you very much in advance!
    -Alex

This is normal behavior, and is a result of the POSIX umask. Newly created files have their POSIX permissions (owner, group, and everyone fields) set such that only the owner can read and write.
The best way to solve this problem is to use an ACL entry to define desired permissions for a folder, specifying inheritance (e.g., permissions apply to this folder and any newly-created files or folders inside of that).
Please see my ACL Tips version 2 link for more information, including a more detailed explanation of POSIX and ACL permissions and how they work together: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1732788

I work on dual screens on a new mac pro but when I do the 4 finger swipe it moves both screens, is there a way to move just the screen that is active?

Multiple desktops and dual screens really aren't meant to work together. Apple came up with this multiple desltops feature and never really thought about users that use a dual monitor setup. So use either multiple desktops OR dual monitors but not both. Also don't try to use any App in Full Screen Mode as that doesn't work with dual screen setups either.

  • I'd like to carry my system, applications and files on a portable Thunderbolt ssd drive and boot from it.  I have a Mac Pro in the office, iMac at home

I'd like to carry my system, applications and files on a portable Thunderbolt ssd drive and boot from it.  I have a Mac Pro in the office, iMac at home, a MacBook Air for when I'm on the road, all with TB.  Can a single external TB drive boot all three hardware configurations successfully?  I've been told that differences in hardware configurations between the systems make this impossible.  Is this correct?

Piece or peace of cake really though.
A quick install on new hard drive or SSD or 10K and less than an hour to move everything over properly.
YOU looked for a quick fix and found none and all the brick walls.
It is not  days of work to do a clean install and migrate.
There are few if any apps that need to be freshly installed either though there are updates needed for them to be compliant, any driver or plugin also and that is done ahead of time with research.
And your backup or clone of your system is taken care of - you leave the old system boot drive 'as is' untouched.
Also, better strategy to move most all your home folder (except for its own ~/Library) to ANOTHER disk drive and not on t he system drive at all.
As for applications on its own drive or 3rd party, beeen there done that, even SSD or 15K SCSI - no benefit in performance or organization.

  • Wake From Sleep Reboots New Mac Pro 2.8 GHz 8-core 10.5.2

Add me to list of users with this problem.
    I bought NEW computer yesterday.
    Mac Pro 2.8 GHz 8-core 10.5.2
    ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT
Yesterday, I ZeroWrote the OEM Apple hard drive and Installed 10.5.1 from OEM Install disks -- ran all updaters, repaired permissions numerous times during build.
Only 2gb OEM Apple RAM installed
Added on (from original installers): CS3, Office 2008, Toast 8.03, Stuffit 12.01, Silverfast AI 6.5x (Epson 4990). It appeared to be waking properly during the build.
Last night, last Software Update updater ran was ATI RADEON HD 2600 XT Firmware UPC 1.0.
This morning, wake from sleep rebooted machine.
Apple had me disconnect all cables, including power cable for a minute and then plug back in.
This worked for a couple few minute sleeps, but after lunch it rebooted again waking it from sleep.

I got my 8-core StartUp Disk deselected and have had only one auto reboot when waking from sleep.
HOWEVER, now I have heavy vertical bands twice now when it wakes up my 30" Cinema Display:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6919620#6919620
It had wide vertical banding, white edges in corners and edges, and white fog over entire screen that seemed burned into the screen -- it eventually corrected itself back to normal after being on over a couple hours.
Second time, I had wide vertical banding, 6" and 3" wide with rows of white, green, blue pixels.
I connected the 30" to the old Mac Pro -- 10.4.11 -- AND THE BANDING GRAINY SCREEN APPEARED CONNECTED TO THE OTHER MAC like it was burned in the LCD.
So it appears the banding is in the monitor the monitor.
The burn-in cleared itself after being on about 120 minutes.
*It seems the new Mac Pros have some devilish issues with sleep on their Apple Cinema Displays to the point it is destroying the monitors -- or it is coincidence...*

  • Migration Assistant: Problems transferring data from PC (XP SP3) to new Mac Pro 2012 - can not get Migration Assistant to work as PC will not display verfify passcode

Migration Assistant: Problems transferring data from PC (XP SP3) to new Mac Pro 2012 - can not get Migration Assistant to work as PC will not display verfify passcode
Hello, I am having problems migrating data from my old PC running XP (SP3) to my new Mac Pro 2012 using the Migration Assistant.
    - I downloaded and installed the Windows Migration Assistant from Apple
    - My Mac recognized PC and displays passcode
    - The sasscode does not show / display on my PC
    - My Mac is then stuck in "authenticating" loop and the PC is stuck "waiting for Mac to connect."
    - Both computers are connected on same network (have connected PC on WIFI and using ethernet to Reuter)
I have looked on support site and only response I saw says to reinstall Windows Migration Assistant (which I have done)
Any ideas?  If cant get this to workare there instructions for manually bring across relevant data eg itunes music and apps, photos, picasa data etc?

Why not turn off the Windows firewall and uninstall any other firewall software you have installed?
If you are using a Norton product uninstall it and discard it. To fully unistall most Norton products you have to go to the Norton website and download a soecial program to completely get rid of it. The normal uninstall feature built into the program will not remove all of it.

How to transfer photos from a camera chip to my Mac Pro Desk Top?

Take the memory card out of the camera and insert it into a card reader then use Finder to copy the iomages over to a folder on the Mac desktop.
Basically the exact same way you would do it on any make or model computer.

  • Cannot print from InDesign v3.0.1 on Mac Pro

I am attempting to print from InDesign v3.0.1 to a new Epson R3000 printer. Last week the connection and prints were fine. Now, when I select the "Print" dialog box, Indesign crashes.  Is there possibly a conflict between my older InDesign and running OSX v10.6.8 on a Mac Pro?  I re-installed InDesign and also re-installed the Epson print driver, with no luck.  Since I originally bought InDesign as part of the Creative Suite package, the "upgrade" cost to either the latest CS package, or stand alone ID, is $599.00.  Adobe sales told me my CS package serial number would not work with the $119 ID stand alone upgrade.  It is hard to justify $599 for a software I use at most four times a year.

Well folks, I downloaded the latest version of InDesign (CS5.5) and now I can at least print from my InDesign document.  Using Epson Profiles and Epson paper stock I can make decent prints on the new Epson R3000 printer.  But when I attempt to print InDesign documents (my photo portfolio pages) onto Hahnemuhle German Etching paper, using a Hahnemuhle ICC Profile, the photographic images are far too saturated and have a red/magenta cast.  I tried everything, including spending almost an hour on the phone with Epson support.  But, we could not come up with a solution.  Has anyone else had similar problems printing from an Epson R3000 and InDesign?  I can print TIFF photo files from Photoshop CS5 just fine, so clearly it has something to do with InDesign.  Suggestions are most welcome, thanks!  Mark W.

  • What is the easiest way to move my iPhoto library from my macbook to my new mac pro?

What is the easiest way to move my iPhoto library from my macbook to my new mac pro?

Surprisingly easy! Go into the Finder, then into the Photos Library. In there, there will be a file called your iPhoto Library. It holds all your photos, essentially a special type of folder. Using an external hard drive transfer it to the same location on your new Mac. Now, when you boot iPhoto on the new Mac, it will recognise it and you'll see all your photos instantly!
There's a really good video on it here...

  • Leopard on Dual 2.5GHz PowerPC G5 Mac Pro

    Hi,
Just tried to install Leopard on the office Dual 2.5GHz PowerPC G5 Mac Pro. When I insert the DVD, it does not read it, pauses it and then ejects the disc. There is no warning or error message?
It reads and accesses other DVDs but I'm wondering if its because the Leopard DVD is dual layer and the reader is not?
    Any help would be appreciated,
    Barry

Guys, I have just picked up this thread as the original symptoms are similar to mine. I have purchased the retail version of leopard to install on my two Power PC G5 Dual 2.5s. Both machines spit out the installer dvd without it spinning up. The installer DVD however works fine in my MacBook Pro. Tech support are telling me the PowerPC is faulty and not reading the Dual Layer DVD which the Leopard installer is, although i find it quite strange BOTH my PowerPC Dual 2.5s have the exact same issue. Originally I thought the problem was the partition scheme and that the Installer DVD would only install to a Guid formatted partition, but the tech support said the Leopard DVD I purchased should install directly on to the older PowerPCs which have the apple partition format... we know the DVD is not faulty with at least my Intel machine, and it just seems too much of a coincidence that both my PowerPC G5s have fault DVD drives... which both read other DVDs fine. Any help welcome...

  • Why can't I update to Mavericks from 10.6.8 on a Mac Pro Desktop Early 2008. It meets all requirements listed by Apple.

Why can't I update to Mavericks from 10.6.8 on a Mac Pro Desktop Early 2008. It meets all requirements listed by Apple.

I'm having the same issue with same error message "OS X Mavericks cannot be installed on this computer". I click the "INSTALL" button in the app store and I get the message.
I have a macbook pro 15 inch, 60 GB of free space, 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 3 GB of Ram (well really 4 but it can't see the 1 extra gig). Mac OS X version 10.7.5.   I read the install description and I meet the requirement.
I have checked Launchpad for a stalled install (all 3 pages) and have checked if I have a time machine backup file on my root directory. No, I don't.

  • Problem with mac pro 2x2.93 GHZ Dual Core and Mini Display Port

Finally I see the button to create new post!
I would like to explain a problem I have with my mac pro 2x2.93 GHZ Dual Core Intel Xeon processors and the ATI Radeon HD 4870.
I have two 30 "Apple. After buying the new Mac Pro is one of the two monitors, only with the monitor all black, small horizontal lines.
This happens only to the monitor connected to the mini display port... So if you reverse it monitors the problem always moves on the board connected to the Mini Display Port.
Apple has already changed my video card and the adapter but the problem is still there.
Someone can tell me if it is the ATI Radeon HD 4870 that has problems to have two monitors 30 "? Or it could be that the mini display port that is hard to read the two monitors and when the background is black (RGB-255-255-255) makes these lines?
Through the Apple store I then bought a new card (EVGA GeForce GTX 285 "). Unfortunately, after three weeks of waiting is not yet arrived. Proof that I want to do before returning to telephone assistance is whether on a card that has two dual-link DVI ports normal all goes well.
Sorry for the repetition of messages, but my English is very bad. This is the first time I connect to this site support

In any case, this system does not support two 30".
I honestly don't think the 4870 with that adapter can support two 30". Just using the adapter itself would not give me the normal resolutions on my 30, where as the DVI port did. Luckily for me the adapter worked fine on my 20".
Truly I don't know why Apple would sell a card and not say just what displays it can power.
So I worked around my problem fine but I chose to get the 285 also. My question to you though is, did Apple make you pay for it? Was it part of a deal with them because the Radeon didn't work? You might want to talk to them about that. That is one expensive card.

  • Mac Pro 3.2 GHZ Quad-Core Intel Xeon Running Slow

    Hi everyone!
I'm a professional photographer and could use some advise, and thanks for your help in advance!
I have a Mac Pro 3.2 GHZ Quad-Core Intel Xeon with 8 gigs of 1066 MHz DDR3 of memory, running on OS 10.9.5, and my main drive for applications is 1TB and has about 420 GB free. I have various other hard drives for storage.
I use Chrome, Lightroom 4, Photoshop CC2014, Blogstomp, Spotify or iTunes, and I have Backblaze Backup running continuously.
When I first got my computer I didn't have any problems, but over the past few months it's been running super slow. I know that LR4 has issues, but I want to make sure that there isn't anything else I need to look into before getting more memory. I mean even Chrome opening up has the beachball.
    Thanks!

My guess is this is a 5,1 2010-2012. You could use a GTX 680 or later, it has good PCIe (the 2009 is somewhat weaker and crippled by sharing slots 3&4)
A Samsung XP941 512 $525 delivers 1100MB/sec reads and 900MB/sec writes to supercharge your system - one of the best and few such, similar to the same SSD blade used in the nMP 6,1. Lightroom and CS love to be able to load and write scratch, graphic libraries. Bootable. You could use a smaller 256GB $275 for system in slot #3 and one for data and scratch in slot #4 if you wanted to go full out.
You said it was fine originally so maybe something you installed, or an upgrade to the OS or something else that Etrecheck should help show.
