Moving from Final Cut Pro 4.0 to Final Cut Pro HD

Is Final Cut Pro HD much more difficult to use than Final Cut Pro 4.0? I ask because I have extensive experience using 4.0 but may apply for a job that requires knowledge of FCP HD. Is it fairly easy to get up to speed on FCP HD?
Thanks!
Powermac G4

If you mean going from FCP (V4) to FCP HD (V4.5) you will not see any major difference in day to day editing, but it is much more stable.
It is a free upgrade and you should really be there already

  • Moving from Mac notebook/10.4.11/iMovie6 to Mac Pro/10.5.2/iMovie 08

Hi. I'm sure information exists here about this but I've tried searching on "where files", ".mov", "imovie6 and iMovie 08", etc. and haven't quite found what I was looking for.
I have an old Mac notebook on which I made exactly one movie with an earlier version of iMovie and iDVD. When I upgraded at one point to iMovie6 and opened it, I upgraded the movie to that format. I don't think I ever opened iDVD6.
I now have a new Mac Pro and I want to move over my movie from my old computer but I have the following questions:
    1) Should I open the movie in iDVD6 first and upgrade it to that new format?
    2) What files do I need to move? I have the folder
    ~/Movies/My Movie/
where there are four files: My Movie.iMovie2Project; My Movie.mov; My Movie; and My Movie~
there are also folders: audio waveforms, cache, media, and shared movies
    ~/DVD Files/My Movie.dvdproj
I guess I should move all these but I really don't know which ones are for what and what I have to save to backup my movie both in final form and in a format that allows me to edit it in the future.
    3) Since my new computer does not have iMovie6, should I (a) download it and run it concurrently with iMovie 08 or (b) convert My Movie to iMovie 08 format?
I've read threads which say you can run both of these at the same time. I've also read some threads where it seems like there could be an issue running iMovie6 on 10.5.2 which is what is on my computer.
I'm not heavily invested in iMovie6 and I'm happy to just use iMovie 08 for my next movie. I'd like to know what is so different between the two that people feel a need to run both.
Lastly, if it matters, I don't use iPhoto anymore. I did when I made the original iMovie. I now use Adobe Lightroom for photo management and I bought iDive software to manage video clips a while ago which I can use or not use, depending on what works with the version of iMovie I use.
Any thoughts or advice are welcome.
    Thanks,
    Deena

    hey there Deena,
#1-iDVD is for burning your Movies/Slideshows to a video DVD for playback on a set-top DVD
    player.
#2-you need to move the iMovie Project from your Movies folder-the project will contain all the
assets used in it-video, photos, music, etc... i usually put project on a portable drive, then copy
to different computer. you will lose transitions/effects other than dissolve, if you open your iM06
    project in iM08.
#3-those of us who have used iMovie for several years seem to prefer the long established use of
the timeline for editing video/photos, rubberbands for editing audio & keep using our 3rd party
plug-ins. look @ the interfaces of the 2 versions to see the differences & why some dislike iM08
or say go w/ both. i run both on my newer Macs, w/ no issues, i like iMovie08 for quick photo
slideshows. you chose not to use iPhoto or Aperture... so only you can decide what you want to
do-run iMovie 6, 8 or both or choose a higher level of editing w/ FCE/FCS or Adobe Premiere.
try both iMovie versions, then choose.
    good luck.

Hey, My father moved from an old macbook to the new retina macbook pro about 2 months back. Now as he is a business man he requires all his emails from his old mac onto the new macbook. The problem is to integrate his old mail data with 2 months of his current mail data.
All the instructions i have yet found online only seem to be for a new macbook where all the mail data and preferences could be transfered.
    Thanks in advance,

  • Is there any way to Import From Camera (dv) in a way that Final Cut Pro can later import everything, including the audio

I know iMovie dv to Final Cut Pro has no audio.  At least with my old events.  But is there any way I can make it so future dv files Imported From Camera in iMove 2011 will later work in FCP?

    Hi
    Yes and No
And it depend's on what quality You want and how much problem You stand in FC - and what version of FinalCut You mean.
    • FinalCut Pro-X - I have no clue at all
    • FinalCut Express and Pro (till 6.0.6) - I'm very familiar to.
    • If You take out the Imported/Captured material from Event's - it seems to be 100% OK - but in wrong codec so it will work in FinalCut BUT with a lot of RENDERINGS - every slight change = Need of RENDERING. To much for me.
    • If You aim to do some Editing in iMovie them move over to FinalCut = Moving from Event's to Project's result in that every second line in the picture is discarded ( and can not be repaired ) so the project will lose a lot of quality - whatever way You use to Export/Move it over to FinalCut.
So at least I'm better of by Capture in FinalCut from Start as I can keep 100% quality till Movie is done.
    Yours Bengt W

  • I'm trying to import from an A-to-D converter. Final Cut Pro X won't save my files.

I have a VHS videotape I'm attempting to digitize. The tape is being played on an ordinary VCR, and converted from analogue to digital by a Dazzle* Hollywood DV-Pro conversion box, from where it goes directly into my Mac via FireWire.
Final Cut Pro X recognizes the converter, and displays the video and audio from the VCR. I can attempt a camera import like normal— it asks me into what Event I want to save the captured video, and the import time counter counts up normally. However, once I close the Import window, my imported files have not been saved as Clips! I checked both in FCP and in the Finder— there are no files in the Event I made to store my clips.
Does anyone have any ideas why this could be, and what I can do to try and fix it?

FCP won't work with this device. It requires timecode input when using the tape-based importer, which it isn't getting from the Dazzle.

  • Is there an upgrade path from Final Cut Studio 3.0 to Final Cut Pro X?

Is there an upgrade path from Final Cut Studio 3.0 to Final Cut Pro X ?

The price of FCPX pretty much is the cost of the upgrade of FCPStudio, but a much better value (at least so far -- every update has been free.) However, it's only the single app so you might feel like you're not getting as much for your money. Don't be fooled. Most of Color and Soundtrack Pro are built into FCPX. FCPX will conform video automatically so Cinema Tools aren't really needed anymore. The Motion engine is part of FCPX, although I do recommend buying Motion 5 (an extra 50 bucks.)  (Motion 4 seems to have died in Yosemite - you can't even launch it.)
I "upgraded" from Final Cut Studio 3... it took me about a week to decide to pack up all the old software for good. YMMV.  However, if you use DVD Studio Pro... hang on to that.

  • Import project from iMovie 10.0.1 in the Final Cat Pro X 10.0.9

How can I import a project from iMovie 10.0.1 in the Final Cat Pro X 10.0.9?
If the file before the project was in the ' Movies ' folder, now there is no such file. There's only ' Library iMove ', but no file that can be moved in the Final Cat Pro.

Thanks for your confirmation!  It seems to me this is the situation after tons of research.....
I really don't understand Apple's logic/philosophy now.... in the new iMovie... it takes out the keywords which is extremely important to anyone with many clips.  I don't mind to pay for the expensive FCPX but I am told that FCPX cannot migrate the iMovie library..... sigh....... what **** they are thinking....
BTW, it seems the "Send project to Final Cut Pro" function doesn't support sending even the "Event". It supports only sending project with the clips associated with the project.  There is no way to send the clip without associated to project.  Anyone can confirm it?

  • I'm moving from windows notebook to MacBook Pro. When teaching I use a USB quality pointer device and want to know it the MacBook works with it

    Greetings,
After using only Windows computers at work and home our company leadership now allows us to purchase Mac Pro Books if we desire. I am VERY excited!!!
Both of our sons work as engineers in Silicon Valley and will not purchase anything but Macs for years.  Both son's schedules hinder me to get the answers quickly from them so I am seeking advice from you.
I love the idea of finally getting a Mac but have some questions and need to find a source to answer my questions before I send in the request for the new computer. If any of you could respond to these "beginner" Mac questions it would be wonderful.
    1. I teach a large variety of classes using Powerpoint style presentations. I own a very nice wireless USB remote that I use to move between slides.  Will the ProBook allow me the ability to use my remote? If so is there anything I need to know to make it work?
    2. What are the tradeoffs of the 13 inch ProBook versus the 15 inch model?
    3. What external devices/equipment should I plan to have available to be effective in an office environment?
    4. In moving from Windows to Mac what is the best was to bridge the learning curve so I can become effective as quickly and effectively as possible?
I am very excited to make this change and your advice would be so appreciated.
    Blessings,
    David

    David,
Have you checked the Web site of the manufacturer of your wireless USB remote, to see if their product supports MacBook Pros?
In general, the 13-inch MacBook Pro has less powerful hardware than the 15-inch model. A detailed comparison can be found in the right-hand column of the table here.
Which external devices/equipment do you currently have  to be effective in an office environment with your Windows computer? The list is likely to be similar with a computer that runs OS X.
Which applications do you currently depend upon under Windows? That might be the best guide to providing advice on how to best adapt to OS X.

  • Working with final cut x (10.0.9) on macbook pro want to add compressor cannot download 4- where can I download 3

working with final cut x (10.0.9) on macbook pro want to add compressor cannot download 4… where can I download 3?

It has been available at some online retailers (Amazon) and EBay – but only as part of the discontinued Final Cut Studio suite. It would be cost--prohibitive to buy and there are other more cost-effective solutions. Depending on what you need to do, MPEG Streamclip might be a (free) solution. There are others – Episode, for example, which is not cheap at $500– but less than haf the cost of buying an used copy of FCS.
Another approach (and the one I would follow in your situation) would be to install Mavericks on an external, bootable drive. Run a copy of FCP 10.1 and Compressor 4.1 from that drive.
    Good luck.

  • Moving from PowerMac G5 to Mac Pro, just swap hard drive?

    Hey all!
I'm finally upgrading to a Mac Pro from my PowerMac G5. I'm hoping that I'll be able to take the HD out of my PowerMac and install it in the Mac Pro and be able to continue my work with as little downtime as possible.
Can you all confirm or deny that I should be able to do this even though I'm moving from a non-Intel to Intel machine? I'm running 10.5.4 on the PowerMac G5 now.
    Thanks!

    What I would do:
Install a 3rd drive and format.
Clone your OEM Mac Pro system to the new drive.
Disk Utility Restore is fine, but for keeping it updated, SuperDuper.
    Migrate your home account only.
Copy only applications that can be drag-installed.
Install anything that has an installer.
Copy media and data files to 4th drive.
Pull the G5 drive for now. Later, when you know everything is working, reformat it to GPT (GUID partition table) which is default format. While APT is suppose to work, in reality it is best to reformat even if it is a data drive. And having your G5 OS is best wiped clean, though there should be almost zero trouble with Leopard and with applications that are Universal Binary (under Tiger there were problems and migrating would result in sluggish performance, problems and just not running properly, that may still be partially true).
Also, Apple's OEM drives are not the best always in the performance department and moving the system to a new drive helps. For $82 pick up a couple WD Caviar 640GB drives.
Add plenty of memory, check everything out as you move forward, and take precautions up front avoids problems later.
As an experiment, you could try removing the OEM drive and just try running off your G5 drive, as a test, and assuming it is also backed up.

  • Final Cut Pro now downloading onto a MacBook Pro

I just bought a sweet MacBook Pro and my Final Cut Pro won't load. The message, "This software requires certain hardware or software whick is missing. AGP graphics card." comes up. Is there a problem with this computer or can Final Cut Pro 4 not run on a computer as updated as this? I also downloaded all of the updates for Final Cut. Please Help!!!!

What's funny about this is that everything else works. Live Type works, Compressor works, DVD Studio Pro 3 works but Final Cut Pro HD needs to see an AGP graphics card. My MacBook Pro has a PCIe graphics card and not an AGP graphics card. You would think Apple would issue an update to FCP.
Oh well not a big deal. I just sent in my FCP4 disc and Cross Grade form. $199.00 and you get the full FCP Studio. I'll be watching the mail like the kid from the movie "A Christmas Story" waiting for his decoder ring to show up. lol

Cross Grade orders must be Post Marked by Dec. 20, 2006.

Get info then check permissions then add your curent user name (it was probably different on old Mac) and give your username full read/write permissions.

I have moved from a G5 Powermac to an Intel Mac Pro and selectively porting over items from a backup hard drive.
How can I access and use documents and drawings created on the PC based computer ?

Clarisworks, you need Appleworks, which will only work with Mac OS X10.6.8 or earlier.  See this tip if you must go newer.  Mac Pros with newer hardware configuration than July 20, 2011 can't use Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier without this tip and then it would be Mac OS X Server.  I'm not sure if the new black Mac Pro supports that configuration or not.
iPhoto, there is an iPhoto for all versions of Mac OS X.
iTunes, there is an iTunes for all versions of Mac OS X.  Note with iTunes versions 11 and later, which are needed for syncing with iOS 7 or or later, you will lose coverflow, if you liked that feature.  Sadly you can't run an older version of iTunes from within Mac OS X 10.9 or later.
Sketchup: http://help.sketchup.com/en/article/60107 shows the versions that will work with intermediate Mac OS X versions, and this shows the latest version: http://help.sketchup.com/en/article/36208 be sure to click on the operating system you choose to use.
GIF - Viewing GIFs Apple's Preview can do that.  Editing them, I like http://www.lemkesoft.com/ Graphicconverter.
DMG is able to be opened by all versions of Mac OS X.  This are just "disk images" which store programs on a virtual disk that will open when double clicked.    Frequently you'll find the installer of the said program inside.  To find out if the program itself is compatible with 10.7 through 10.9, see http://www.roaringapps.com/
    Otherwise see the resources on:

  • Final cut pro x is killing my macbook pro!

Final cut pro x running on my macbook pro results in constant running of fans at full pace. Jerkiness in playback on fcpx. Entire computer is jerky through other programs like safari too. It seems fcpx background operations are absorbing the entire power of the co puter. Any thoughts/suggestions? Ps it runs fcp 7 fine.

With your MacBook Pro, did you get a unit with the dual video processor? A while ago Apple started putting in two different video cards. One was for the mundane everyday stuff and the goal was to save power. On my MBP I have a Nvidia GeForce 9400M, I also have an Nvidia GeForce 9600M GT which is much more robust for graphics power. The VRAM on the 9400 was only 256, with the 9600M GT it was 512. The bigger the GPU and the fast the GPU, the faster the MBP especially with FCP.
You can select the faster processor by going to system preferences and choose higher performance. It will require you to log out and log back in to use the different GPU. Also turn your harddrive to never sleep when you do this and you will see some improvement in speed and lag.
Another thing is to set up your projects on a fast external drive. If you try to keep source files and project files on the MBP drive you are begging for slowness.
    Good luck!
