Moving from iPhone 3GS OS 3.1.3 to iPhone 4

I am planning to upgrade phones (as above). I have a few questions please:
1. I have never updated my 3GS, mostly out of paranoia of losing everything but also because the laptop I originally had my iTunes on crashed. I have only ever purchased songs directly from my phone iTunes app. Am I able to install and use iTunes on a different computer and it still recognize my old phone?
2. How do I backup my old phone before transferring?
3. How do I transfer everything from my old phone to my new one without losing anything?

The first thing you need to do is install iTunes on your computer.
Once that's done, if you're on a PC, in iTunes click on Edit > Preferences > Devices > check where it says "prevent ipads, ipods, and iphones from syncing automatically'
-or-
If you're on a Mac, click iTunes > Preferences > Devices > check where it says that same message
Now, when you plug your 3gs into the computer, it won't sync until you tell it to and your data won't get erased
Next, plug in your phone to your computer. Right-click on the name of your device on the left-hand side of iTunes and select where it says 'transfer purchases from (your phone)'
Next, right-click on the name of your device again and select 'back up your device'
Now all your data is on your computer, even your itunes purchases.
You will probably need to authorize your computer at some point, but it will prompt you to do so if necessary
Now when you get your new iPhone 4 and you go through the set-up process, it will ask you if you want to set it up as a new phone or restore it from an iTunes backup (which you will select)
Then you're all set up!
In the future, please do yourself a favor and backup your phone often. That way you can update your iOS as often as Apple releases updates. They're very useful and often make your phone run faster, have longer battery life, and fix bugs

I have the iPhone 5 and have with 6.0.1 software version.  Although I had them when I moved from iPhone 4 to the 5 (could play them), the latest update has most of my songs on the phone listed in grey (over 95% of them) and I can't play them.  They are still listed in the iTunes library.  When I look in the Summary for the iPhone, it shows Audio as only .16 GB - I have over 5 GB of songs, so what gives?
P.S. When I look at my Playlists most of the songs are greyed out.  However, at the bottom of the list there is a cloud icon with a downward facing arrow.  When I click on it each song starts to "load" and after a few minutes I have the songs back on in the list.  I have to do this to all my playlists (I had over 100) in order to get access to all my songs.  Then I did a sync and it happened again!
I use iCloud for documents and some other things (calendar, contact, etc.) but am not aware that I have anything music-wise in the cloud.  Any thougnts?

You may have to try deleting all the music from your phone (by going to Settings>General>Usage>Music, swipping All Music and tapping Delete), then sync it all back on with iTunes in order to fix this.

  • Moving from iPhone to Samsung - iMessage issues

    Hi all
I recently moved from iPhone 5 to Samsung S4. I have removed my registered MPN on my profile but I am still unable to recieve SMS from certain contacts in my phone book (all iPhone users). I am unable to access my iPhone 5 to remove iMessage on that handset as the handset has now been traded in.
Can anyone give me any idea on what to do next as obviously I can't ask every iPhone user to switch their iMessage off?
    Thanks

Do you still have the iphone? I know this has been an issue with phones that were lost or stolen, but if you still have your iphone try going into settings on that iphone and turn off imessage. See if that helps, certainly cannot do any harm.

  • Moving # from iPhone 4 to 3GS?

My wife's iPhone 4 was stolen this past Friday and is temporarily borrowing an used 3GS from a friend. How would I go about transferring her cell number to the 3GS? Is it a simple matter of calling AT&T's activation number from the 3GS?

There's actually a SIM card already in the phone from the previous owner. Do I still need to go to a retail store to get it switched to her #?

  • Moving from iPhone 5 to iPhone 6 without laptop

I'm moving from an iPhone 5 to an iPhone 6 but don't have a laptop. How can I transfer my data? I need my photos, messages, contacts and apps to be transferred. Please help!

You can use iTunes or iCloud to move data from old iPhone 5 to new iPhone 6. If you want a fast way you can try FonePaw iOS Transfer. Here I show you how to transfer data from iPhone 5 to iPhone 6:
First of all, backup old iPhone:
-Go to Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup.
    -Tap Back Up Now.
    -Wait until the backup finishes.
Then set up your new iPhone 6 (When the backup of your old iPhone is finished, turn on your new iPhone 6):
    -Choose Restore from iCloud Backup.
    -Tap next.
-Enter your Apple ID and password.
-Choose the backup of your old iPhone and tap Restore.
I may receive some form of compensation, financial or otherwise, from my recommendation or link.

  • Moving from iphone 3gs to iphone 4

Hello.  Currently I have an iPhone 3GS and my wife has a black iPhone 4 purchased at the end of last year.  With the recent price drops on the iPhone 4 at Wal-Mart, I want to buy a new white one and let my wife use that one and then I would use her older black iPhone 4.  Is there anything I need to do with the SIM cards if I do this or is it as simple as just setting them both up as new phones?  thanks.

You can simply swap sims after you set each device up as new. AT&T could care less what phone you use, as long as you pay your bill.

  • My springboard crashed moving from old 3Gs to new (but used) 4.  Now what??

I recently got a new phone from my new work- the iphone 4. It was previously owned by a co-worker and still had all his info on the phone. I activated it with at&t but didn't have my old phone for them to do a data transfer/backup. They gave instructions and it seemed really straight forward.
I followed their steps to backup and then data transfer all my songs, apps, calendar, etc. All seemed fine until the new 4 turned said "Springboard" had crashed. It entered safety mode too. My contacts transfered but not my apps. Everything of the new old owners is still on there.
I wanted to try again but it won't respond to iTunes - I think because it is in safety mode. I had my 3Gs for almost 3 years but I'm completely unfamiliar with "Springboard" and safety mode.
What do I do now?? I would like to avoid going to the at&t store as the wait it forever.
Also, I don't have iCloud yet- I don't know if this makes a difference backing things up but I really don't have money to get Lion yet.

He had moved the iTunes Music folder to an external drive
    Bummer.
Copy the entire \Music\iTunes\ folder to the external.
Plug it in to the new computer.
    Hold Option and launch iTunes.
Select *Choose library* then select the *iTunes library* file in the iTunes folder on the external.

  • Notes Moved From iPhone to iPad

I was trying to figure out how to sync up my note on my IPhone with the iPad. Last year when I first got the iPad I was able to sync my iPhone with the IPad. When I would write notes on the iPhone 3GS it would update the notes on the iPad whenever they were both in WiFi. At some point this changed and two days ago I went to sync the notes back up through the cloud I guess?
Everything that I could check notes on in the setting was checked and everything was fine. But when I went back into the iPhone settings to try to figure out what I checked to synced them up I ended up loseing all notes on the phone. All I had done was uncheck notes under my email accounts and they just disappeared! I tried rechecking it under the email accounts but they did not come back. They are all in the iPad so their not gone. But what happened? The Notes had not been checked under my email accounts to begin with on my phone. So I dont understand why after turning notes on in the iPad, turning notes back off under email accounts on the phone deleted them all? It won't even show me the Accounts tab in the notes app like it did when I had first turned notes on under email accounts. I have that option on the iPad but it disappeared on the phone after turning notes back off in the phone.
I'd like to get it back to the way things were where I could update notes in the iPad and iPhone at the same time. It made things so much easier...
A little bit of info, my iPhone has never been updated because of not having a proper computer. I've plugged the phone into computer when I first got it, added music and it hasn't been plugged into a computer since. The iPad is a used first gen iPad I got it completely reset with nothing on it from my mother. And the iPad also has never been plugged into the computer since I have owned it. So it not like I've updated anything and lost my notes. I just turned notes on under Cloud and everywhere else I could find to turn Notes on under in both the iPad and iPhone. Then when I went into the setting for iphone after the notes got onto the iPad, and turned off the notes under email accounts, they just up and disappeared from the iPhone and I am confuzzled =/
Every problem I've ever had I have been able to find answers too online, but I've yet to come across anyone who did exactly what I have done to loose all my notes on my iPhone but keep all notes on the iPad?

Something I just now remembered, I DO NOT have THE CLOUD on my iPhone because it has never been updated. Cloud is only on the iPad. Could that be why this happened?

  • Moving from iPhone 2g to 3g, what do I need to know?

Have 3g iPhone on way, got 2g at mo, what do I need to do?
Also is there any way of accessing "officelive" accounts with iPhone browser?

Explain. What do you mean? As long as you backup your 2G iPhone before plugging in your new 3G, you should be able to use the backup from the old phone for the new phone. As long as you make a backup and set up your new phone from it, you should be fine.
Plug in old phone, and it should do a backup by itself, which means all your stuff is saved. Then plug in new phone, and you should get an option to set it up as new phone, or to use your backup. Use your backup.
Hope this is what you meant. As to your second question, do you mean Windows Live?

  • How do I transfer contacts from iPhone to Android?

I recently moved from iPhone to Android and now want to transfer my contacts over. However having reviewed some similar queries on this discussion board I still cannot do it.
I have seen comments to go into iTunes and select the sync contacts with dropdown, then select the Google account, however I only have options of Outlook or Windows and I don't know how to add a Google account into that.
I've tried on my iPhone settings, Mail Contacts & calendars, and adding my Google account into there, but it still doesn't show Google as an option in iTunes.
I'd rather not have to type them all into my Android phone manually, but I'm beginning to think it would be easier than wasting so much time trying to figure out a technical solution!
Can I somehow import them to Google via iCloud?
    Thanks in advance.

    No problem!
You can try iCloud for Windows (http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1455) to Sync your contacts.
The export step using Windows can be done using the contacts application:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-au/windows/import-export-change-format-contacts# 1TC=windows-7
Once you have your contacts in vCard format, you can import them via the gmail web interface...  You *may* even be able to drag and drop them onto gmail these days.  Many Google web services support drag and drop, so that could be the easiest way.
Let us know how you go!

  • Transfer apps from iphone 3GS to iphone 4

I am upgrading from iphone 3GS to iphone 4. I have several applications and music which I have bought from apple store with my appleID. Can these apps be moved to iphone 4 if I use the same appleID... or do I need to repeat these purchases again?

You can sync as many devices as you want to the same iTunes account, there is no limit. You can have the same content on each device or different content, the choice is yours. iTunes will keep everything straight, by device, upon subsequent syncs, including separate backups. When you get your new phone, you can either restore it from the backup of your 3GS or set it up as new, the choice is yours. Afterwards, just plug it in an sync.
