Moving from Late 2008 MB to Late 2008 MBP... best way to restore via TM?

Hello,
My Late 2008 Macbook was involved in an accident (RIP). I had hopes the HDD would still work okay, but it just beeps at me and is unable to load anything.
So, I've already ordered my replacement Mac. I ended up ordering the 2.53 Late 2008 MBP refurbed from Apple.
I need to eventually restore my data on here. Fortunately I had Time Machine setup with my backup applications and files. What is the best way to restore my applications/settings on the New Macbook? Migration Assistant? Archive and Install?
The previous Macbook had a problem when opening Safari, sometimes it would take a few seconds longer than normal to load with the beachball. I'm trying to avoid migrating the issues I had previously onto the new system, so ideally I'd have a fresh OS X install, but with all of my applications and settings intact. Is there an ideal way to do this?
Thanks,
Jonathan

I understand completely about wanting to have a fresh OS to start out from to minimize any performance issues and whatnot.
As far as I can imagine, the only way to do this with all your settings and files intact is to do the Time Machine restore, then Archive and Install after (aka Option 2). However, I would evaluate the performance of the system before doing the Archive and Install. I have a feeling that you'll think its more than satisfactory and not feel the need to do the A&I at all.
As to the Safari issue, it was probably a .plist file corruption or something like that which is very simple to fix. If the new machine presents the same issue with Safari as the old one, I'm pretty confident that we can fix that up quite easily.

    Change here:
Settings > iTunes & App Stores > Apple ID: > View Apple ID > Country/Region.
You must have a verified billing address & be located in the country whose store you are trying to use.

Paragon even has non-destriuctive conversion utility if you do want to change drive.
Hard to imagine using 3TB that isn't NTFS. Mac uses GPT for default partition type as well as HFS+

The Calendar icon has disappeared from my dock and I can't find a way to restore it or to download the Calendar app. The iCal app is not in my applications folder. Help please.

Do you have Time Machine enabled.   If so, go back through your previous months until it features in your Application folder.   Then restore.

I have just switched from pc to mac.  What is the best way to keep Windows, Parallel of Boot camp?

Parallels should be able to handle that without any problems.
There is a version of both of those that will run on the Mac. So you might consider upgrading to that version instead of going with Windows on your Mac.

  • Moving from Novell Zenworks to Windows Server 2008 domain

I am trying to find ways to automate the process of moving between a Novell Zenworks environment to a server 2008 domain. The first problem to my understanding is changing the names of the machines to legal values in our Windows XP Pro Clients. They are currently mostly named, cata_rm#_computer# (where # is a defined value set manually). To my understanding underscore _ is an invalid character for joining a domain so we want to have an automated script that can easily be deployed over the network to basically replace all "_"with "-". Is this necessary or can this issue be handled easier ****her down the road on moving to a windows domain?
We would then like to be able to deliver a payload via zenworks that will cause all of Novell and Zenworks to be removed from the computer and once that is complete add the computer to the new windows domain. Ideally the payload could be easily run from a network share or flash drive as well. Unattended installers may be available for this software suite but we would want to combine the uninstall process with adding the domain so we can move from our poor zenworks domain to a windows domain without ever touching most of our machines.
This is not my project but I am interested in learning how this process could be completed as painlessly as possible hopefully learning something along the way. Anything from links to guides on where to get started looking to more developed solutions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

None the less the beginning of my problem, removing Novell is a Novell issue. Thankfully I have figured out most of the removal of novell and zenworks already, now just working on fixing the client names and joining the windows AD domain.

  • Moved from an iphone 4s to a 5...Do I "restore from last backup" or set up a new phone?

I just went from an iphone 4s to a 5 and I'm trying to set it up and I don't know if I am supposed to back it up by "restoring from the last back up ? Which I thought was last night, but apparently it is saying my last backup was Nov. 14th. Or do I choose "set up a new iPhone"? Which do I  choose?
My new phone automatically grabbed all my contacts and caldendar, notes, etc from the cloud, just don't know what do do from here.

you can get your playlists and apps back by syncing with itunes.
restoring from a backup is generally the quickest way to get everything back on the phone.

  • When moving from page to page in Safari, is there a way to keep each page zoomed without zooming each page with a separate zoom gesture?

When I zoom a page in Safari and then move to a new page, the new page reverts to unzoomed status and I have to zoom again.  Is there a way to make the zoom persist as I move between pages?

Try the All Pages Zoom extension.
The select Productivity on the left.
You can install the extension from there.
After it's installed, you can access the settings from Safari / Preferences - Extensions.

  • The Best Way to Restore a DC if it is removed from Domain

    Good Day,
I have 2 Windows Server 2008 R2 DC's in my network and I am trying to upgrade 1 of them to Server 2012 R2. The DC being replaced is also running Certificate Services. To do this I will need to remove AD from the DC as well as remove CA and remove it from
the domain. I plan on backing up and restoring Active Directory/Certificate Services to the new Server 2012 box with the new server using the same name as the old DC.
I am worried about this transition because if something goes wrong I will have to not only restore from backup I will have to restore the computer object in AD as well.
    Would the best strategy be:
    Backup AD using ntdsutil
Uninstall AD and CA from DC01
    Remove DC01 from domain
    ** failure occurs **
Restore DC01 computer object in AD on DC02 using ntdsutil authoritative restore
Restore full OS on DC01 from tape backup
The problem I have with this is all of the setting in Sites and Services will still be gone because of the removal of AD from DC01. I am also thinking about simply taking snapshots of the 2 DC's as they are both Virtual Servers in Hyper-V
Another Strategy (Not approved of as snapshot is NOT a backup):
    Snapshot both DC01 and DC02
Uninstall AD and CA from DC01
    Remove DC01 from domain
    ** failure occurs **
Revert back to pre-removal snapshot of DC02
Revert back to pre-removal snapshot of DC01
    Any help would be awesome!

    Hi,
    First at all,
    we don’t recommend to
install CA on a DC. This is because if the DC corrupt and need to demote, we need
to uninstall the CA role first. If you want to install the CA on a DC, please follow below steps:
Clean install a new windows 2012 server and add it to domain as domain member.
Promote this new windows 2012 R2 server to DC.

Using Ntdsutil.exe to transfer or seize FSMO roles to a domain controllerhttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/255504/en-au
Back up CA from 2008 R2 server with steps below:
Backing up a CA database and private key.
    Backing up CA registry settings.
Backing up CAPolicy.inf only if we install our CA by using it.
Removing the CA role service from this server.
Restoring the CA database and configuration on new server.
    Verifying the migration:
    Verifying certificate enrollment
    Verifying CRL publishing

    5. After that,  make the old 2008 DC offline for a while. If everything things are working fine, you can then demote the windows 2008 DC.
    Thanks.

  • HT1281 What is the best way to restore a Time Capsule from an Archive disk?

I've done an archive of my Time Capsule and am going to store it off-site with my parents. What I'd like to know is, if my Time Capsule disk gets corrupt or needs reformatting, how can I restore its data from the Archive disk? Can I simply copy its files back onto the Time Capsule disk manually? And if so, will Time Machine recognise the sparseimages?

I think you would just keep archive as that.. if the TC was wiped then it is able start TM backup anew.. that is better and quicker than restoring a TC backup from the archive and then using TM to update it.. that would take forever. But yes, you should be able to connect the usb drive to a computer and copy the sparse bundle to the TC..

  • I need to install cc on my new MacBook and remove it from my old MacBook. What is the best way of doing this?

Well, as above really. Should I just install again? Or do I export from my old MacBook?

Don't try exporting it. Adobe software needs to be installed.
On the new MacBook, sign in to creative.adobe.com with your Adobe ID, download the Cloud app then install your apps.
You can leave it installed and activated on the old MacBook since you're entitled to 2 simultaneous activations.
Or you can deactivate on the old MacBook. Launch any Cloud app and click Help > Sign Out. That will deactivate the entire suite.

  • Best way to restore from backup?

Here's my question, I've noticed over the last few months my Intel iMac 2.16 has started to run a bit slow, beachballing quite a bit and applications such as iTunes and Quicktime take much longer to open now. I've still got about 60GB of HD space left on the main drive and I've tried everything to resolve the problem such as repairing drive (no problems found) repairing disk permissions etc but nothing seems to work. I've now cloned my entire HD using SuperDuper and have a recent full Time Machine backup. I would like to try fixing the problem by formatting and restoring my HD but which is the best method, Install & Archive, Restore from Time Machine or restore from SuperDuper clone? I obviously don't want to re-import the problem but at the same time I'd like to choose the easiest method.
Thanks for any info on this,
    Dave

Well this is strange, before doing the archive & install I booted up using the SuperDuper clone just to test it and make sure I had a fully working clone to fall back on, low and behold the clone works fine, not spinning beachball and everything feels faster.
Should I just format the internal HD, run a repair and copy the clone back onto the HD?

  • Upgrade from acrobat 9 on old computer...best way to upgrade to acrobat XI

just bought a new computer (windows 7)....acrobat 9 on old computer...I want to install upgrade to acrobat XI on the new computer....what's the best to manage this process
    Thanks
    hetharch

Go ahead and do the install on the new machine. You will be asked for the SN of the qualifying product (your AA9) as well as the SN for the new version. Keep in mind that such an upgrade assumes you are no longer using AA9 on the old machine.

  • Best way to restore from backups?

I'm restoring my iBook after having the hard drive replaced. I have a stack of about 50 CDs containing incremental iTunes and iPhoto backups. I also have my settings and playlist backups on my flash drive.
What is the fastest, easiest way to import all the music and photo files back onto my computer?
When I insert a iTunes data CD, iTunes opens up and shows the songs, but if I select Import, it makes me navigate to the CD and import songs one at a time? I know there must be an easier way.
I did change my iTunes preferences to Import and Eject when a CD is inserted, but that doesn't seem to work with the data CD.
    Thanks.

Normally you would IMPORT when ripping a CD to mp3/4 etc. You ADD when bringing in previously ripped songs.
One easy way is to put the data cd in the drive>select the files on the cd>drag them to the iTunes main window, this will copy the files to iTunes and out them into the iTunes music folder as long as you have iTunes prefs>General>check both the boxes "Keep iTunes Music .... organized" AND "Copy files to iTunes ......library."
You can also do this via menu commands>iTunes Menu Bar>File>Add to Library... (CMD-O).
